The coffee isn't better than any other place, but due to lack of business imagination and generic competition the owner's charge $5 for a simple cup of tea or coffee.....latte's can get up to $10. As far as quality of coffee served, Flatlands is untouchable in the BG area. The staff is very obviously meticulous in the way they choose what coffees to carry and serve, with great affect. For a small town like BG, having a third wave coffee shop is almost as irregular as finding a golden goose egg in the street, in that only a small section of the population understand how awesome a golden goose egg is, while the other part of the population sees the golden goose egg as just an oddity. If you're unsure what to make of Flatlands, think of them as you would your friend who likes wine tasting, or your friend who likes craft beer. Third wave coffee shares the same quality as both of those - the folks involved believe in making exceptional products, and that we shouldn't settle for the cheap, big box, version of the thing. This is my favorite coffee shop in BG. I'm sad I no longer live in the area to frequent it more often. The ambiance is amazing and conducive to studying, engaging in conversation with friends, or just relaxing and enjoying the coffee. I love that they have nitro coffees and pour over coffees--not something you find in every coffee shop in town. Moreover, the flavor of the coffee is amazing. This coffee shop appreciates coffee more than any place I've ever been. It's also a great place to open your laptop and study/work for a bit while you enjoy your beverage. It has as much cool feeling/vibe as any coffee shop I've ever been to, even in larger market cities. Yes it's more expensive than a simple Dunkin Donuts or McDonald's coffee, and yes it takes longer than just pumping your own coffee at Bigby... but the thought and craft behind it make it a a unique experience to actually TASTE the handpicked coffee that they offer without junking it up with sweeteners or additives. A nice comfortable place to sip a deliciously prepared cappuccino and a savory scone. The atmosphere is chic and enjoyable. The baristas do clearly understand how to make a cappuccino. The scone was filled with savory toppings and wasn't overworked, albeit just slightly denser than I usually like my scones. This is a great little coffee shop to hangout at with plenty of outlets to plug devices in. The baristas are very nice and helpful. But the prices...holy cow! I really enjoy coffee. I personally order my coffee and have it shipped in from out of state, and grind it myself. But paying $5.87 for a large coffee that's maybe 10oz, is absurd. Fabulous coffee. So much thought put into where the coffee is sourced from and every bag has a story. The pour over is perfection. Five star rating because every aspect of my visit and this coffee house was perfect. The space is very minimalistic and beautifully crafted with the small details in mind. The serving counter is low and uncluttered to give a sense of more open interaction with the baristas. The the baristas I met working (including the owner) were very nice and conversational. The owner has incredible knowledge and love of coffee- and it shows! I had a very well prepared and delicious cortado. They are a multi-roaster coffee shop, meaning they are always bringing in new coffees to try, and keeping the best. They had a $7 pour over available because the owner loved the quality and flavor so much of this limited quantity coffee that he had to pay full price for the coffee himself. Absolute perfection. From the beautifully minimalistic interior design, to the knowledgeable and passionate owner, everything you want from a coffee shop is here. Ben (the owner) knows his coffee and is always ready to answer any question you may have before brewing the best cup you have ever had. I can honestly say that I have never had a cup of anything here (they also serve tea) that I did not absolutely love. There are new types of coffee every 2 weeks or so as well, so there will almost always be something new to try. Also available are craft sodas and delicious pastries. Absolutely amazing is the best way to describe Flatlands. I'm a huge coffee fan and love going to new coffee shops, and I can honestly say this is the best one I've been to. They order high quality coffee and brew it perfectly--both of which pay off in an amazing taste and great overall experience. These guys definitely know what they're doing and are pros at it. On top of the coffee, the food here is outstanding. The macarons are super authentic with a crunchy outer shell and a soft, chewy interior, plus delicious, creamy, and flavorful fillings; sweet, but not cloyingly so--a great complement to the coffee. Not to mention the rotating flavors of scones and the tastiest croissants I've had in BG. Flatlands also has the best baristas and owner. Everyone here is super friendly. A lot of similar coffee shops I've been to have an an air of pretension to them, but here they're all about making sure their customers feel welcomed and appreciated. Visited yesterday for first time. Very unimpressed. Walked in, place was very sparse and plain looking. Lady behind counter was nice and that is reason for two stars. All drinks were pricey for are but since first time, I sprung for their number one drink. Ten minutes later, she walked over to our table and said "sorry, but we are out of our number one seller and no idea when it will be replenished". Okkaay, we picked a pour over, another 10 minutes, we received and, at best, they were luke warm and tasteless. Also, overpAid for a pastry that was at least a day or two old. To top it off, she put on a vinyl record that was so loud that it took care of any normal voice conversation. I don't think there will be a return visit. read more

Among coffee snobs I am probably ranked as "Highly Snobby". I and my ilk are forever searching for the elusive "perfect cup". Our unremitting "sehnsucht" drives our prodding, interrogating, and general oppugning of poor unprepared baristas in every city we visit. Today I walked into Flatlands Coffee, in Bowling Green Ohio, and I suddenly knew I was welcome. I am always greeted and served by the most well informed, and well trained baristas you will ever find anywhere. It is a rare establishment where their answers are always longer than my obnoxious questions, always accurate, and always presented in such a way that makes me feel like they actually appreciate my asking. I always learn something when I go in there. This visit I asked barista Ben to select a coffee for me based on what he was especially proud of, and based on what he already knew I might like. He chose an Ethiopian single origin coffee that he had himself roasted to perfection. He took the time to show me the beans which I could see were well cleaned, roasted slightly light and perfectly even. Weighing the beans and the water with apothecary skill, Ben made me the perfect cup of coffee. There is no doubt in my mind that every essential flavor that those Arabica cherries had to offer, Ben lovingly coaxed out of the beans and infused them into a sublime experience that I will remember for a very long time. I am not yet resigned that my "sehnsucht" has been satisfied; I'm not sure I found that "perfect cup" for which I am always searching, but today I came as close to it as I have ever come. Amazing coffee and technique. I prefer lattes and frequent one other coffee shop in town. However, I've never ever enjoyed straight/black coffee without any additives (like milk, sugar, or chocolate) before having some of Flatlands picks. The tastes range and each has its own complexities and can be enjoyed from first sip to last. I never thought I would enjoy straight coffee until I had one of Flatlands brews! Right when we stepped through the doors we knew there was something different about this coffee shop. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming and simplistic. Our Barista was Aaron and he was everything a barista should be, and more. He took the time to explain the coffee beans, the process, the filtration, and answered any questions we had. He invited us to sit at the bar to continue conversation with us. Not only was it one of the best cups of coffee I've had, we also had the best coffee experience. Recently visited for the Coffee Quest and was very impressed!! I had been here before but only once or twice. They've expanded their menu from when they first opened. The atmosphere is great. The barista made several great suggestions about what coffee to get, and when I found out Thursday's are when the Nitro coffee is only $3, I had to try it. She gave me a free sample and I loved it. Also had a blueberry and lemon zest scone of course! No competition with Grounds for Thought, since they're so different from each other. Flatlands has better coffee and a more hipster atmosphere. I was never really excited for another coffee shop as BG does not need more, but decided to give it a try anyway. There was no one in line ahead of us, however it took 10-15 minutes to get 2 drinks. Barista seemed knowledgeable, although I got the feeling he was extremely high. Coffee was...not good. I couldn't finish my drink. It was bitter and flavorless all at the same time. So bummed. Going back home I know the best option I usually have is star$. But driving by Bowling Green I discovered Flatlands and what a gem!!
