Hands down one of my favorite bars/dance clubs in the city. This place isn't for everyone, but if you're a fan of EDM (and specifically, deep house music), you really need to check it out. The sound and lighting systems are ridiculous, and the place is always jampacked with people. The photobooth with its secret passageway to the upper level adds to the already secretive and alternative vibe the bar gives off. It's somewhat off the beaten path, but definitely worth visiting for a night of non-stop dancing. Only complaint I could give would be its size (does become difficult to move once the place is at capacity). read more

Honestly they were being discriminatory and it wasn't the first time. The guy working there was incredibly disrespectful and racist. They told us when we entered that the place would be open another couple hours and it closed in 15 mins. After taking our covers, the only person he spoke to was my white friend and only returned her cover charge. His behavior was repugnant. Seriously one of the best clubs in DC for underground house and techno (with monthly drum and bass parties), but no attitude. It's special. Not expensive either. They run a weekly Thursday happy hour every Thursdays from 6-9 before late night with food, which is generally super cheap, else they open at 8. People show up 10:30-11:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. Wednesday night's are a particularly underground and filled with the latest bass house and newer sounds, but every night here is better than average. Best feature is a Funktion One sound system. No ears ringing in the morning. Good staff who clearly understand the scene makes it an easy choice for those with more discerning ears and global tastes. read more

I have been to Flash over 100 times since its birth. Being a lover of ALL electronic music (not just house and dubstep like most newcomers) I very much appreciate that we have a place in DC that focuses on the not so mainstream subgenres (deep house, tech, techhouse, jungle, and on thursdays--DnB). What they have done with this place is amazing. Flying in great DJs from all over the US and other parts of the world. In my opinion, I would make it out to Flash A LOT more if there wasn't a cover but its still worth the $10 or $20 you have to pay to go upstairs (price varies depending on the show). Drinks are not the most expensive in town but they're certainly not the cheapest either. The lighting is UNREAL. They now have their rooftop with the retractable roof. Absolutely a go to spot. I can't get Flash off my mind...I never thought I would find something like this after leaving San Francisco, but it pretty much threw that worry out the window. Their coat check was not operating last night so I had to tie my rain jacket around my torso like a jackass. Laura assured me that this is what all the cool kids in Germany do but I wasn't buying it so i went upstairs to the rooftop bar and hid my jacket behind a column. That rooftop bar ended up being our saving grace. If we needed anything, whether it was drinks, the bathroom, or just fresh air after dancing in the mid-floor , the rooftop section of the club was the place to go. They had it open even though it was raining so good on them for doing that. I honestly don't think i would've had AS good a time if it weren't for that rooftop- drinks, bathroom, fresh air, improvised coat check... great addition. read more

The place was jam packed with a crowd I'd expect at U Street Hall without the 18-year olds. Bartender service was quick from what I remember. The line for bathrooms is always a pain, but it helps that they're unisex so women don't wait 377291816372019x longer than men to take a piss. Also a lot cleaner than most lounges/clubs. Average bottle service - had two tables and it was a pain in the ass to just get seated. Seemed pretty unorganized. Cocktail menu and the rooftop bar in the summer are A+++. Try their Moscow Mule or Pimm's Cup... seriously the best I've had. Overall one of the nicer venues in DC. Off-the-charts sound system and they tend to bring pretty f*ckin killer DJ's if you're into underground house (mainly deep). read more

I would not book any future events at this venue! On Sat 8/11/18. Ms. Sutton event coordinator of UAL reserved this venue for a private event of about 80-100 attendees. Our group paid a significance amount of money for bar exclusivity. However on the day of the event that was not the case. The manager Devon (Short, Brown, Bald Guy) was less than accommodating and he was also very rude to a number of our guests, including myself (for using flash during a Snapchat video!) Ridiculous! Although, Devon's behavior was less than satisfactory. The staff working our event were very friendly and accommodating. Shoutout to Westley and the bartenders working that night. The photobooth/speakeasy idea is cute. Be prepared to sit and smile rulllll quickly, though, or you'll just get a strip of shots of your boobs/awkward faces depending on how tall you are. The music, at least on the night we went, was somewhere between house and elevator music. We left early (about midnight) because the only dancing you could do to that particular hybrid of music is the white-girl shuffle, and even I can only do that for so long before you get self-conscious about your dance moves. I keep hearing good things, so I'll probably go back and see if it was just an off night. This is an underground Techno/House club that may showcase something else depending on the promoter - so know who you are going for if you come! A few pointers for those who have never been... 1.) This is NOT an EDM club, go somewhere else if thats your thing...you're not wanted here. Highly recommend Echostage or Soundcheck for those needs. 2.) This is a no selfie type of environment unless you want your camera snatched. Leave it in your pocket. 3.) Do not dress like you are going to fancy it up somewhere. This is a casual hip type of place with no dress code. 4.) This is not a bottle service club where you will get sparklers and a midget on someone's shoulders delivering it. 5.) As far as clubs go, I came into this one expecting the usual sweaty, completely off girl to guy ratio, and having to fight my way to the bar to get a drink. Well it was sweaty but everything else was pretty unexpected and generally pretty awesome. We got a table, were treated like kings, and the prices were really reasonable. Hands down the best sound system in the city (word on the street is that it cost a milly, so it should be). Haven't had this much fun dancing in a DC club since Red. This place would get five stars from me for the sound, staff and the talent buying, but as other reviewers have mentioned, the weekend crowd is pretty unbearable. I can't hate though, because I'm happy that a club doing something great with house, tech house and techno is making bank on the weekends. I'll only brave a Friday or Saturday night if the talent is really worth it, and have skipped some great DJs just because I didn't feel like dealing with the crowd. I've been here quite a bit and have caught some top-notch acts including Doc Martin, Marques Wyatt, DJ Sneak and Derrick May, and I'll be stopping by tonight to check out Daniel Bell. The Doc Martin night was just sick. Just a tip: if you do want to go on a weekend for the music, make sure you get totally hammered to deal with the people around you. They try, but unfortunately these people really don't have it together. The building is nice, but the management and crew consistently mess up and create to a bad experience for both DJs and guests. I have been a few times, and I no longer plan to go back. Most recently: At 8:30, the crew told me they weren't open. The opening time is 8 p.m. Then the DJ schedule got pushed back by 2 hours without any updates provided. Then the crew tries to tell me their showtimes are posted next to the bar, pointing to a sign that has no showtimes on it (I have photos to prove - and at least they admitted to goofing this one up). Running a nightlife venue is not easy, especially when you have to schedule musical acts. I completely understand things being chaotic and having to deal with surprises and changes in plan. But unfortunately these poor children dig themselves into a deeper hole by pretending everything is fine when, for example, the show is scheduled to start 30 minutes ago and there's no equipment set up. Or another example: the bartender who kicked me out at 8:30 recognized me when I returned but then denied kicking me out at 8:30. Flash, please don't make situations like this worse for yourself by pulling the stuffed shirt act - have more respect for yourselves. This could be a great venue if there were better people in charge. Like I said, the space is very nice and even stylish in decor. But I can only imagine the horrors that the DJ's themselves have to endure in the hands of The Flash crew. The experiences I have had s a guest don't give me much hope. I sincerely hope that, one day, flash will be at least half as good as it can be. But for now, I sincerely hope for your sake that your favorite DJ is playing at another venue - so that you both can have a nice experience. read more

This was a pretty fun club. Downstairs has a cool lounge vibe, while upstairs is a more standard dance floor with DJ booth and big flashing lights. Generally had a pretty great time. Drinks were reasonably priced, and there was a fun interesting crowd. Not a ton of douchebags like you might see at other dance clubs. The one thing that I will mention is that there was a tremendous amount of working girls with their, *ahem* "handlers", conducting business in the club. Easily more than a half dozen girls working the room. It was so blatant that I find it hard to believe the club doesn't know its going on. Been here for a variety of house, trance and deep house DJ's. Flash has an awesome sound system and even though the music does get somewhat mind numbing the drops are always pretty good and the light strips the run along the wall give a pretty good (if not seizure inducing) show. The drinks are pretty good and not too strong (as weird as that sounds think less likely to accidentally black out). The downstairs area has a nice brick fireplace and there is an outdoor smoker area. Good place to come with friends if you're into the trance, house, deep house etc scene. Occasionally I've seen people also get to meet the DJ's. read more

I gave it two stars because the actual venue upstairs is great and the downstairs bar is too, although downstairs is more "loungy". Let me warn you, THIS IS NOT A HOUSE MUSIC PLACE, IT IS DEEP DEEP HOUSE. I've been on Saturdays only and I can tell you that it's hard to come here not knowing the DJ whose playing and appreciate their "talent" (use that word lightly because it's more of DJ's who get really offended when you ask them to switch it up). There has always been a cover, but that's no surprise it says that on their website. Would love this place if it were more House music (NO NOT STREAMLINE EDM BOLOGNA). Place has potential, but I agree with Cliff W. WAY TOO MANY DUDES HERE, and if you bring a girl just think, Walking Dead, Zombie Swarm and she can't escape. My friend is thoroughly impressed with their DJs and music selection, and when I am in there I can tell this is the "cool kid crowd." I like the vibe, atmosphere, and cocktails, and might return if I really feel like dancing. So I do want to see how soundcheck stacks up against a party here, but all in all a good experience. read more

There have been so many times where I have gone and girl friends of mine have gone, where drunk or drugged men have physically harassed us on the dance floor shouting verbally abusive phrases with no bouncer anywhere in sight to kick these people out. This is a hipster nightclub. Without going into a rant about how Hipsters are hypocrites, I have to say it. We quickly realized the vibe of this club when we were told to wait in line to pay a $20 cover after being told we would have to go to an ATM upstairs to pay it. I can't remember the last time I paid a cover in DC. A few years ago, covers went out of style for 90% of people downtown. This hipster bar is bringing it back... just the opposite of the idea that their Funktion One system is innovative in DC (Opera has one, for years now). The hipster bar downstairs remind me of the scene from American Psycho where one of the characters asks if SoHo is getting too commercial to a couple of 80's hipsters one of which is named Stash. Therefore I beg the question, is U Street becoming to commercial? To which Stash's girlfriend responds with Hey, that affects us. Rather than cover all things previously covered, I will piggy-back off of Negro F's post. ARRIVAL "Good location, lots of adjacent little bars and pizza parlors for both before and after. The usual doormen are definitely not what I'd call friendly, but not rude either. Inside, Flash is visually proper. Dim lighting with just enough lamps around the bar for you to see where you're going. Both the downstairs and upstairs room are accented with the right balance of steel and metal to make you feel like you're in something between a warehouse, and an old tavern. Tickets are sold in the booth/coat room right before you go up the industrial stairwell. If you didn't get a pre-sale, the price will most likely be 5-10$ more then the "tickets at the door" price you saw online, even when the place is half empty. I used to do nightlife events, and I smell a hustle". MY RESPONSE: All of the above holds true. I did find that the ticket counter was "winging" the price on both occasions but I didn't fight it. DANCE FLOOR/DEMOGRAPHIC "The dance floor is spacious, I'd guess the max capacity is between 400-500. Very high ceiling, which is good for acoustics. Now, the DJ booth is elevated maybe 8 or 9ft in the air, which is inappropriate for an "underground" club. First, that's so 1998, plus instead of having the DJ close to you (so that you can see their hands) you get a giant black wall at the front of the dance floor, usually crowded with disengaged patrons". MY RESPONSE: The demographic in the main room middle floor is that of the hipster types. The upstairs rooftop has a more sophisticated cross-over crowd that doesn't seem to be into the uber underground sound. It almost feels as if they really want more of that cross-over sound to get down and dance. Regarding the dj wall, I prefer the wall because it creates a separation between the dj and dance floor. This 2 step head in deer light culture is preventing us from engaging with each other. It's rather a strange feeling to be dancing with your partner to have everyone facing the dj standing in formation. VIP MY RESPONSE: It's close enough to the main floor to create a good VIP/main floor pairing. SOUND Downstairs - Lounge vibe, good all around for convo and bouncing around. Upstairs - The bulk of the sound comes from 4 hanging speaker stacks, so within that "square" the sound is solid, but outside of it the energy level goes down, conversation levels go up, a "dead zone". Mid's and High's are fine, but the bass will never blow your guts out of your stomach. Which is what you need to in fact "get deep" MY RESPONSE: Quality to the fullest. I will remark at the fact that often the terrace has a pre-recorded mix while the opening dj plays. The sound then turns to the main room headliner. I truly feel because of the separation of demographic, there should also be a difference in music. As a nightclub consultant and dj coach, it is imperative to pair music with its texture. The same music that you play in a dark underground setting does not comprise of the mood that one would experience while under the stars in a well lit room. MY TAKE ON TALENT: Flash runs an EDM (Event Driven Music) culture. This is not to be confused with the Electro/Festival genre culture. Flash brings in plenty of weekly uber underground as well as palatable acts for its DC hipster demographic. As most venues today, it doesn't really have an identity and as with most DC nightclub owners, it doesn't have the confidence in a Resident dj to both network with local/international acts/record labels as well as the ability to cultivate the local scene. OVERALL Flash promotes a repeat clubber and somewhat of a loyal fan base. It creates repeat clubbers in that it allows many to come see isolated acts. It also generates loyalty because it is a one of a kind venue in DC by providing a rooftop/underground feel in one venue. So it's just a place to go just for the sake of having a place to go on a Saturday night to hear non-radio play music. However, for the true clubbing vets, it will be limited to isolated acts with no true identity. Just wow at some the reviews of this club. I have to admit that, as a fan of deep and progressive house, I am a bit biased when it comes to Flash. The sound system they have installed here, custom Funktion Ones, is tailored made to showcase the deep house sound. On one of my last trips here to catch the 16 Bit Lolitas the quality of this system was on full display. Dead End Thrills on the Funktion Ones anyone? ... every element of that song was crystal clear. But i digress, here's my guide to having a good time at Flash. A lot of the negative reviews bring up good points, but they miss the whole point of Flash. This is a club by music lovers for music lovers to dance and listen to world-class DJs spin house and techno all night long. Tip #1: Get there early or stay late. On a Friday or Saturday night the main floor will be packed at peak hours, especially for the big acts. It usually clears out around last call so you can get some dancing in. Otherwise your best bet is to stick to the rooftop or downstairs bar. Tip #2: Respect last call. The bouncers are serious about enforcing DC's 3:00am (??) no liquor law. This is because Flash is really DC's only after-hours spot. Another reason why Flash is a gem, the party goes until the DJ stops spinning. Tip #3: No photos on the main floor. Please, photos, and especially flash photography, ruins the great vibe they've created with the lighting rig. Tip #4: This is a dance club. This place is not about bottle service and VIP seating. The dance club is the heart of the electronic music scene. And Flash is about dance and electronic music. All and all, Flash is one of the east coast's dance club gems. You don't usually see a major DJ do an east coast tour and not stop by this club after or before hitting Montreal or NYC. Thanks goes to the Flash crew for putting together a great space. read more

There is nothing I don't like about this place. If you enjoy throwing down on the dance floor to deep, dark, dirty house music, you're going to have a good time here. As someone below wrote, Flash is "Eurotrashy in the best way possible." Yes, there are rainbow-colored LEDs running down the walls, but late at night when the dance floor is going off, it's all part of the ambience. They bring in top-flight DJs, the drinks are reasonably priced, and the sound system is probably the best I've ever heard: the bass is deep, rich and crystal clear. The most striking thing about the place is its complete lack of pretentiousness: no dress code, no VIP section, no velvet ropes (all things I always hated about the high-profile NYC clubs). I was there for Butane the other night, and the crowd of course had the beautiful people who tend to frequent trendy clubs, but also club kids and even some older folks who were just there for the music. The best part was the room thinned out a bit by 2 am, leaving the people who came to get down with all the room one could want on the floor. It was wonderful. I will definitely be back. I just hope it stays exactly the way it is forever. read more

This club was outstanding! I went here with my boyfriend and though there was a bit of a wait outside, the bouncers were courteous and impartial to gender and good looks which I thought was uniquely refreshing at an upscale club. Once we got inside, the first floor bar/lounge area was relaxing and the drinks were well made. The photo booth experience before going up to the main floor was definitely a plus! The main dance floor/club area was not as big as I imagined but it wasn't a mosh pit which was good! The crowd was great and the music was amazing! The bartenders were efficient and skilled! I had a great time! The lights and sound system were definitely the highlight! It is worth mentioning that my boyfriend and I asked for a particular shot that the bartender didn't know how to make. He apologized but it wasn't really a big deal. 5mins later, he came back to us with three shots, said he'd looked up how to make it and didn't charge us for it! That was definitely something out of the ordinary at an upscale, expensive bar! I totally did not expect it! If you're looking for a fun night out in D.C., this is definitely the place to go! Where did this come from? I am a seasoned dancer in DC, but I was completely caught off guard when I ventured to Flash last weekend. The bar when you walk in is not to be confused with the club upstairs. Yes, you have to pay $15 in cover, but it is worth it! First, you walk through a photo booth and take pictures. Awesome. Next, you go up into the completely soundproofed room that is elegant black with just a touch of tasteful light strips and flash bulbs on the back wall. Perfect. Third, the music they play is from live DJs usually spinning great house music. Finally, they stay open LATE! When I say late, I mean 4am on. I can't wait to go back for another great experience. =) read more

Amazing. I had such a fun time at Flash, and I can't wait to go back! Ideally I will get there at an earlier time so the cover isn't so high ($10, usually $3, from what I hear). First off, bring some ear plugs because when your in the heart of the dance floor, it is SUPER loud. I'm saying that I could barely hear for the next 24 hours. Flash is a pretty sweet spot, I love the whole photo booth experience, and it is especially great if your going with a group. I assume buying a table is a great experience, but as a normal patron, drinks are about average for one of these clubs, in face lower compared to a place like Shadow Room or Eden etc. The music is similar to that of U street music hall, but I think the crowd is similar to that of a Shadow Room, Eden etc. Those that are there are not as much there for the music as they are for the club, showy atmosphere. I wish the crowd were more into it like at U street. Last time I was there, it seemed like there was a lot of "turnover" in the crowd. No one seemed like they were staying for more than an hour. I guess it may depend on the night. Overall, it's a bit of a hidden gem and I will probably go back once a month or so. read more

Europeans don't know how good they have it, with the best DJs rolling through their cities all the time and great clubs and music festivals everywhere. Thankfully, we have Flash in DC, where great DJs come through regularly. I don't know why they come, maybe it's the awesome sound system, but they come. I go here to dance. I don't go to the bar or up to the roof or anywhere else but to the main room to dance to thumping deep house and techno. I've seen Chris Liebing and DJ Bone recently, both incredible on that system, and Move D and Chus and Ceballos in May coming up. Can't wait. The only downside is the dance floor is small for a club. It ain't Nation, but there probably never will be another one in DC. read more

We got here at 1245am on a Sat night. We didn't have to wait long to get in, and the photo booth with pictures was pretty legit. I like that we got a little souvenir from this place. Usually, the only souvenir you really get from a night out in DC is a $60 bar tab and a hangover. It got pretty packed the later it got, but we had a table so it was nice being able to sit down and listen to the music. The only issue I really had was that after 45 minutes I got bored of listening to the same song/beat/voiceless music over and over. Other than that, this place is a really good time.
