It appeared that the owner was working the register, when I was our turn to order she walked away to talk to some friend of hers, with a dog, leaving us just standing there waiting to order.. Finally when she decided to return, she took or order, when we got it it was completely WRONG. How do you mess up 2 bowls of cereal. Ill tell you how. Complete lack of attention to your guests. This place is wack. Everything is disorganized, along with the 9 dollar unwrapped sandwiches in the display case....they better come with a happy ending for 9 bucks. This is my favorite breakfast and lunch spot! There veggie rad is amazing for breakfast and I always get the hippy wrap for lunch. The ingredients are always fresh and consistent. The employees are all really nice and the owner is women and when I go in she's usually always there which is a very cool. She always very sweet as well. read more

I've been to Flake several times and every time I go I think, "I'm back in high school and I'm still not one of the cool kids!" And then I laugh! The staff comes across as painfully hip and very choosy about which customers receive their smiles, laughs or small conversation. I had breakfast there this past Saturday and a homeless guy approached the customers (including my friend and me) who were sitting outside. This is Venice so it wasn't surprising. What was surprising was how the owner (?) reacted. She flew out the door and went ape shit on the guy! She created way more of a scene than the homeless guy did. Geesh! I had very mixed feelings about her performance. I understand she doesn't want her customers to be bothered, but man....calm down already! Woke up just in time to have brunch at Flake. I ended up ordering ahead and picking it up to-go. When I got there I realized this is a really cool place to work since everyone seemed to be having a great time and enjoying each other's company. Even though the line was a little long, seeing the employees smile kept a smile on all the customers' faces. While waiting I noticed that one of the people sitting at a table was eating cereal and milk, more specifically what looked to be fruity pebbles! I thought this was a bit humorous for them to offer as an option, but to each their own. I ordered the Super Cro-Jo sandwich and we got the Sambazon Acai bowl with nutella and coconut toppings which cost extra. I am not a huge fan of regular bacon (Shocking!!), so I requested for it to be on the side, which I am glad I did because it was not that great. The Super Cro-Jo itself was really good though, and the perfect start to my day. As others have mentioned about their acai bowl, it is more like an icy sorbet, but I really liked this too. While I was picking up the food one of the employees was being extra efficient and getting everyone's coffee orders while we were waiting in line. I was not anticipating getting coffee, but because he asked me in such a peppy way I ended up getting the iced coffee. This was pretty good, but I forgot to ask for light ice and he loaded up the entire cup to the brim with ice. I loved the food overall and would definitely stop by here again. There is very limited seating on the inside, and a few tables on the outside too. 10/10 as far as service and food quality go. read more

On my way to Santa Monica, me and my friend decided to have breakfast so we yelped what was close by and discovered Flake. I figured the great reviews have to mean something. The staff welcomed us and handed us two menus. Although the place seems to be themed around cereals and granola dishes-- I ended up ordering the Croissant-wich Jones and an Iced Chai while my friend ordered the Veggie sandwich. My sandwich was delicious: the eggs fluffy, the bacon perfectly crispy, and the croissant was buttery and flaky. My friend said her veggie sausage didn't taste "vegetarian." We also ordered a slice of banana bread which was super moist. The decor is cute and bright. I'd definitely come back for either breakfast or lunch. read more

We found Flake while familiarizing ourselves with the area, in preparation to possibly purchase real estate nearby...and we are now dying for it to be our neighborhood, and for Flake to be our around-the-corner spot! Primarily a cereal cafe, Yup, they serve up mostly cereal in a million combinations at this little place. Classic Venice surfer decor and warm staff make for a delightful combo. Exactly what Rose needed. Groundworks coffee down the road, this place attracts the local artists of Venice as if they advertised a SAG card inside a box of Apple Jacks. Unlike the other cereal cafe in Westwood, they offer up other breakfast fare too, like breakfast sandwiches etc. I for one, am super excited that this little new cafe opened up offering a simple twist on all the other Brunch tickets in this town. I loooooove this place! Their menu is so me! They offer many breakfast sandwiches (with veggie sausage if you want yay!), burritos, bowls, sandwiches, and of course, coffee. They do have limited seating and the place was so popular when we arrived on a weekend around noon. Luckily, we were able to find a seat right away. Service was a bit slow but I loved The Veggie Rad. I adore this place - such a wonderful little spot for a cheap breakfast on the weekends. It is SMALL though, so probably not the best for big groups, but generally you can find a seat by the time your food comes.
