We really liked their love for Oakland, and we stayed in contact as we prepared for the project. Laura was key in helping finally get our permit, and once we had that in hand and were able to move forward, BuildZig was incredible!! Here are some of the glows I share with people all the time about how unique and special BuildZig is as General Contractors: 1) High Integrity. All the way through the process, Carlos and his team were trustworthy and consistent in letting us know each step in the process. 2) Impeccable work. The crew took real pride in their work and added touches we would not have even thought of related to the aesthetics and lasting quality. 3) Stayed on budget & schedule!! Honestly -- these are two things that no one can believe when I tell them. Budget and schedule were really important to us. Our budget was tight. They met our goal of finishing our whole project in time for us to move back in after only three months! The expenses were predictable and easy to track. 4) Great communication. We had weekly meetings to track the project and troubleshoot any questions. 5) Values aligned. Carlos comes from a background in community organizing and it shows in the practice of the work. They care about the well being of all of the workers, our neighbors, the broader community in Oakland, and the environment. We can't recommend them enough. They are Gem in Oakland for sure.

PLEASE READ: I wish I had listened to Craig A., Senior…read moreProject Manager at Realty Builders (not a salesman -- a true professional), when I was planning my kitchen and bathroom remodel. I spoke with six GCs. Most were cheaper -- roughly $20k less for the kitchen, $10k less for the bathroom. At the time, it looked like savings. It wasn't. Craig A. explained the importance of: * Proper wall blocking for cabinets and hood venting * Replacing old copper hot and cold lines while walls were open * Installing flooring correctly wall-to-wall under cabinets * Pulling permits for inspections and proper workmanship Others focused on cost. Permits weren't necessary, they said. Now that the remodel is "finished," the shortcuts are painfully clear: hood vent vibrations, leaking copper lines, uneven cabinets. To fix it, cabinets, drywall, flooring, and some finishes must be removed and replaced, and some items can't even be reused. The fix is now $43,538 -- far more than the $30k I thought I was saving. Craig wasn't trying to sell me extras. He was protecting my investment. If you meet him, you'll see he's genuine, professional, and honest. I was too focused on the upfront price to appreciate the value of his advice. Lesson learned: a remodel can look beautiful on the surface, but what matters most is what's behind the walls. Cutting corners isn't savings -- it's deferred expense. I'm actually kicking myself because I took everyone off Angie's List and considered only the other lower bids. Craig was a referral from a close friend who told me upfront, "They may be a little more expensive, but you'll be happy in the long run." They were right. I hope others can learn from my experience. When we're ready for our backyard deck, we'll be calling Craig A. and Realty Builders.

BEWARE!! NOT LICENSED…read more.. Do yourself a favor and read ALL reviews CAREFULLY! You will see many of the reviews with 5 stars didn't actually hire these people to do work for them. Megan will charm your pants off until she closes the deal, and then she will turn on you. She will make a million excuses about why things didn't get done or why they didn't show up. They will show you their license but not tell you that it has been PERMANENTLY REVOKED. They will show you their bond but not tell you it's been canceled. They will send employees to your house without providing any worker's comp insurance. And they will DEMAND money for work not yet completed. Anthony and Floors to Ceilings have been referred for criminal prosecution. Please see screenshots from the California Contractors State Licensing Board. Here is my story: I engaged with Megan, who was super responsive and in constant contact with ideas and product options. I was worried that I would need an architect and an engineer before we could take out the pony wall in my living room, so Anthony came out and confirmed it would be no problem. Once the contract was signed, they sent employees out to start painting. I questioned why they were painting when we hadn't taken out the wall. Anthony gave me a story about the order in which things needed to be done. His favorite thing to say is, "trust me; I know what I am doing; I have been doing this for over 20 years". I asked 2-3 times a week about the permit and the inspection. He tried soooo many times to convince us that we should NOT get a permit, which was not an option for me. They tried to say I never asked for a permit, but it is documented that I did and had already paid for it. The painting itself was fine, but their employees dropped white paint all over my black doors. Now I have to have all my doors repainted, which was not in my original scope of work or budget. The painting was not completed. There are still two rooms in my house that have not been touched. They never applied for a permit to take down our wall. The pony wall was opened up along with the ceiling and then abandoned that way - see pics. The electrical outlets were removed; however, the wires were not properly removed or capped; instead just shoved back into the wall. Before the new flooring was installed, I asked about padding or underlayment and was told by Megan that it would void my flooring warranty, so no underlayment was used. They abandoned the project about halfway through laying the flooring. They also left one toilet in a shower and another in my master bedroom after breaking my bed. The new contractor has said that absolutely an underlayment should've been used. We are now paying to have the floor they put down torn back up so that an underlayment can be put down first. The underlayment was revisited because of all the hallow spots we found due to their failure to clean before putting down the new floor. They couldn't even be troubled to sweep the floor first! There was dirt and even pieces of sheetrock under the new flooring. They used a sub-contractor to concrete the side of my house. There were no issues with the sub-contractor or the concrete work. They did a great job! When they abandoned the job, I had no countertops because they had already removed my granite but had yet to install the new countertops. Fortunately, I recognized Anthony's game of taking my money and not paying the people working on my job, so I paid the fabricator directly. After Floors to Ceilings abandoned the project, I was able to get my counters installed. That said, Anthony did try to get the fabricator to refuse to install the counters, but the fabricator came through since I had paid him in full. This is a cautionary tale. I hope this review prevents Anthony, Megan, and Floors to Ceilings from scamming anyone else. I have ALL my text messages and documentation that I am willing to share. If you are interested in seeing it all, DM me, and I am happy to share.

They were not the cheapest bid, but I felt most comfortable going with them. Their estimate included a building permit right off the bat, which made me feel a little more comfortable. I had a few estimates that said permit was optional, which made me feel a little uneasy. They took care of the replacing the roof, repairing some dry rot, and installing new gutters. The dry rot repair was extra an $400; unfortunate, but not unreasonable. They started work a week after I accepted the estimate. Work started on Friday and they were done by Tuesday the following week. I had no issues throughout the process. This rental property is over an hour from my house, so we did the entire transaction via email, phone, and text message. Payment was made through Zelle and by check, deposited directly into their account; no need for me to drive an hour to the job site to pay them. Overall, I loved their promptness, their ability get the job done quickly, and their flexibility in payment options. Really good experience. They are definitely my first call the next time I need roof work done.
