I want to like this place, I really do. This is the third time I've updated my review because it is so terribly inconsistent. It has been sporadically good, it's close to our home, and the cocktails are usually good (although what place runs out of a popular brand of a common liquor? What manager wouldn't send an employee to a store to get some to just get through the shift?). But just when I'm ready to give it a nod, it fails hard again. Poorly managed, and everything downstream from the food to the service suffers as a result At our last visit, after waiting for half an hour for our food to come the waitress finally came to our table only to tell my wife that they were out of the dish she ordered. She changed her order to a NY strip, and then they brought her a ribeye. My pasta dish had a puddle of oil in the bottom of the dish a good quarter inch deep. The fries were overcooked, looked and tasted like they were fried in oil that should have been changed out long ago and sat under an warming lamp to age. Recommend for drinks and appetizers only. Service and food are terribly inconsistent and often subpar to bad. read more

I wanted to like this so much - good thing that my lunch companions loved it. Had a work lunch with clients - 5 of us. Started with buffalo won tons and crispy shrimp - both pretty good. Table ordered steak tacos, a margarita flatbread, a burger, a patty melt, and I ordered a spicy flatbread. Everyone's meal came out but mine did not. They said it would be a couple minutes - which turned in to quite a while. I didn't say anything - I didn't complain. The manager came over with a cup of soup and explained it would be a few minutes more. I took two bites of the soup and they delivered my flatbread - and immediately took away the cup of soup I was eating LOL. Problem is that the flatbread was not cooked (raw dough and cheese barely melted). The others in the group ate all of theirs and enjoyed it. I left hungry but the waitress did not charge me for mine. I'm sure my lunch companions will be back - but I will not. read more

I had brunch here the other day with my friend. I ordered the Blueberry Cakes and bacon and my friend ordered the Smore's Waffle. I love good bacon and this place delivered! It was done just right! I thought that I got a good portion of the pancakes too which I appreciate. The presentation was nice as well. My friend was a big fan of her waffle! My husband and I waited 20 minutes for a table which was fine. Ordered food and drinks. Coffee was undrinkable absolutely horrible. Waited 15 minutes more oh we can't make pancakes, would you like a waffle instead? Umm sure. Waffle out 5 minutes later by someone else but, not the rest of our food. We wait thinking it will be out momentarily nope. 10 more minutes cold waffle eaten. Our waiter comes by and says the manager will be by to speak with us. She apologized and said the kitchen had a delay and fell behind. Finally 10 minutes later our breakfast comes out. I ordered the Philly skillet with over easy eggs. My husband ordered the Jalepeno Popper grilled Cheese with Sweet Potato fries. The "roast beef" in my Philly skillet was so over cooked it was beef jerky! Manager came back to see how our food was and I stated that I had jerky Philly instead. She did nothing to remedy or rectify the horrible food situation. I picked out the jerky and went to cut my over easy eggs. Lol yeah right they were completely fried as in 100% done. Manager happens to come back. At this point was done. Everything about this breakfast was horrible and not to mention insanely greasy. I explained exactly what was not ok about my breakfast and asked her to take. She asked if I would like something else and I declined. Husbands food was ok nothing to write home about. Tried to get server's attention to get our check. Got it and he acknowledged that we need something. 10 minutes later our server has not come by to see what we needed. Asked another person for it and our server brought it to us. Paid and left. Food is mid. Drinks are well overpriced. Service was acceptable. Ambiance was good. I ordered the chicken lettuce wraps as an appetizer. The chicken strips didn't even fit in the lettuce so I basically cut up the chicken and ate it as a meal. The bartender also didn't mention this was a ton of food. At least five whole chicken strips. TL;DR: LOVED the hash browns but the cinnamon roll...not so much. I came here for a weekend brunch around 11am and was promptly seated. Service was good, as I was checked on a reasonable amount of times during my meal and didn't have to call for or wait long for the check. I enjoy the ambience here as well! The lighting and layout is cozy and enjoyable. When I saw "Homemade Cinnamon Roll with Pecan Cream Cheese" Frosting on the menu, I was so intrigued. Hoping it would be as soft and fluffy as a certain cinnamon roll chain, I was sorely disappointed. It was dense and tough. The flavors were alright and the cream cheese frosting was light, but I didn't enjoy the texture. On the bright side, the roll was very nicely portioned aka HUGE (about the size of my hand spread out). Now, the side of hash browns though were delish!! Perfectly crispy- yum, I do love a well-prepared potato. I have had dinner here before, and I got a tuna burger (which seems to have been taken off the menu). I did enjoy that, so I was sad to find it unavailable. I still would probably come back here, as it's one of the few restaurants around Rochester with nicer decor and good vibes but next time, I'll try something else. read more

We have been coming to Rochester for 15 years to go to Mayo Clinic. We found this place thru a friend and went two nights in a row. I've been a server/bartender for 20 years. I asked the server, who turned out to also be the bartender about the cider on tap and he was very knowledgeable. It was delicious. Ended up ordering it the second night as well. We had the spinach dip both nights also. My teenage son had the Jack Daniels burger and he said it melted in his mouth as well as a salad that he said was very good. I had shrimp tacos that were amazing!!! The chips were stale but it didn't even matter, the 3 tacos were more than enough food. We will be back, maybe before we leave again. read more

Two parts: Had breakfast on a Sunday. The atmosphere is warm and rich. Service was on par. While the food looked good, it was average. The pancakes were very dry despite drenching in syrup. The hash browns were good, but perhaps a little on the oily side. Have never returned for breakfast. Have been several times for lunch/dinner (why? Someone always has the discounted Costco gift cards for this place!). The most recent experience involved a tuna salad which could be best described as flavorful, that is, if you enjoy the flavor of orange windex. Another dish was mediocre. However, by far, the worst part of this experience was the "chippers" for dessert. These were downright inedible. They were basically gummy flour that was hard to swallow. They were not cookies in any way. Overall, how this place continues to successfully butcher the most simplistic recipes is beyond me. read more

Go for a beer... forget the food... you've been warned! -Fries... an $8 plate of burned greasy mess (how do you mess up fries, and how do you set this mess in front of customers with a straight face?). I mean tasted both bad and bland... a rare feat! -Filet pasta- absolutely tasteless... I mean tasteless. Like eating the soggy box from a frozen dinner. How can you turn fillet mignon into a tasteless piece of steak... I have no idea, but 5 west knows! -Potato walleye... generic food truck walleye that actually wasn't terrible (hence the 1 star vs zero stars). The siracha taters could have been amazing, but the heat overpowered any flavor. My guess is that they survive on the 'one and done' business from nearby hotels. As noted, it is a really nice space both inside and out; and I would not hesitate to choose for a beer with buddies... but my gosh the food was stupendously bad. read more

My husband and I decided to dine out for our 47th Anniversary and we chose to dine at Five West. First let me say that it's a sparkling clean restaurant and our waiter was exceptional. We started with cocktails and the calamari appetizer. A+ for those. Next my husband had the fish sandwich and the brussel spouts with pancetta and honey. They came lukewarm and we're so overly sweet that after trying they were pushed aside. The fries were also lukewarm and limp. I ordered the chicken fingers and waffles with honey Bourbon syrup. The chicken was crisp and flavorful but the waffle was totally cool and dry with very little syrup. Our waiter did bring more syrup but it was also cold so opted to not bother. The food was good but only good like in a regular this-tastes-like-something-I-could-have-made-from-a-mealkit sort of way. It just wasn't what I was hoping for for a special occasion meal, but it was definitely still edible. The pork chop dish seemed dry like it needed a sauce and the meat was slightly overcooked, and I didn't care much for the chunky onion potato stuff it came with. I think this place is more of a "quantity over quality" place because the portions seemed generous but the flavors just seemed a bit bland. In addition to lunch and dinner, Five West offers weekend brunch. We shared the Cinnamon French toast, which was delicious. The toast was generously proportioned, and had a great texture. It was crispy without being too dry. The Five West omelet with smoked pork was very indulgent. It was a large enough serving for 3 people. The hash browns were extra crispy! Service was great, our waitress attentive without being pushy. A word about their dinner service. On a previous visit, we shared their fried chicken lettuce wraps, which were incredibly good. The chicken was tender and moist, and went perfectly with the crispy fresh lettuce. The peanut sauce was rich, and made for a delicious appetizer. The BBQ short rib pizza is incredible! It is very indulgent, not for the faint at heart or calorically conscious. I had the honey and lime shrimp salad, which was a miss for me. The combination and quinoa and lettuce made for an odd texture. The dressing was avocado based, but because the flavor of avocado is mild, it lacked a bit of identity. Nachos, Nachos, Nachos! I will forever remember Five West for the absolute biggest plate of nachos I have seen in my life! We were staying in Rochester for the evening and our hotel was just up the street from Five West so we thought we would have some dinner. They have a nice patio area outside when the weather is warmer and the inside is really big and open. Lots of TV's surround the restaurant. I deviated from my usual burger order as the blackened chicken avocado melt sounded really good this evening. My wife was not too hungry so she ordered a bowl of the smoked chicken gouda wild rice soup. We thought we would also try some nachos. Well the nachos came out quickly and they could have been delivered on a flat bed truck. My pictures won't do this an justice as this plate was huge. Full of crispy chips, melted cheese and all the goodies. Getting hungrier as we were eating we worked on these for what seemed like a long time only to notice we had hardly put a dent in them. I am one who DOES NOT like to waste food but this was going to be have to be one of those times. Our meals followed shortly after we were getting stuffed on those nachos. My blackened chicken avocado melt was excellent. The chicken was juicy and had a nice seasoning from the blackening spice. The avocado creamy and was a perfect balance. The smoked chicken gouda wild rice was also excellent. Big chunks of chicken, the smoky flavor and gouda provided a different flavor profile than the typical chicken wild rice soup. Would definitely order both of these again. Since we were only going to be in town for the evening we did take a huge pile of nachos with us to. We tried to snack on them during the evening however eventually the pile of nachos won out and we had to toss them. We did put in a good effort. Very good nachos and good food. This review is long overdue! My wife and I actually found this place back in March of this year on our first trip to Rochester (wife had to visit the Mayo clinic) and we made sure we went back in June. Boy am I sure glad we did!! I cannot recall everything we had during our March visits, yes we loved this place so much we actually ate there two nights in a row!! But I know on one visit we the Buffalo Chicken Wonton appetizer and it so good!! We also had this in June and both times we ate everything on the plate. Even the coleslaw they garnish the plate with. One of my entrees in March was Steak Fettuccine, a blackened filet in a delicious red pepper and red wine demi-glaze with portabella mushroom and spinach. Unfortunately, I cannot recall what my wife had and their menu changed right before our June visit so I can't jog my memory. Now, my meal in June was simply unforgettable!! They added a section of steaks to their menu and it was probably the best thing they could have done. Most of the steaks are dry aged with one being wet aged (the NY strip if I remember correctly). Quoting Harry Carrey, HOLY COW, that was a good steak! And yes pun intended. I will let the before and after pictures tell the rest of the story. The restaurant is very cool and has a huge patio. The best thing for us and one of the reasons we even chose this place is that it is NOT in downtown. The service was excellent and the cocktails we had were wonderful. Especially, "TIS' THE SANGRIA". We have to go back in December and we have a little dilemma. Due to the success of my wife's treatment in March it is probably only going to be a one night stay and come back the next day after the appointment. We have to figure out how early we need to leave Omaha in order to get to Five West and have dinner before going to our hotel. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. Ordered off the lunch menu but pleased to see breakfast is available until 1 on Saturdays. They were fairly busy, not unexpected; the place always looks crowded when we drive by on our way to Costco. We ordered the queso appetizer, beer battered cod sandwich, honey lime shrimp salad, and fish tacos. Our server was very helpful with the ordering process as we had some questions about the seasonings (sharing food with kids/babies). Food came out in a timely fashion staring with the app. It was impressively served with more than enough seasoned tortilla chips and was enjoyed by all. There's a ton of chorizo but most of it was on the bottom so stir everything up before eating for Best results. This would be great for a larger group (we had three people) because there was plenty! Would definitely order it again. Shrimp salad was large and came with three big shrimp. I'm not sure how I feel about that, the three shrimp. Made it kind of hard to share a taste with others but it didn't seem to be short on shrimp when all was said and done, I wouldn't complain if there were more though, you kind of have to ration the shrimp or you'll be left with just the lettuce. There is quinoa mixed in so you're still getting a good protein dose. The dressing was tasty but not memorable. Would probably not order this again until I've had a chance to try everything else on the menu. Fish tacos came served with black beans and rice. They were lukewarm when they got to the table, almost cold so I was confused about what temperature they were actually supposed to be. I was feeding them to my baby so I didn't mind the lack of warmth but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed them as a side. The fish was blackened and served with a spicy aioli so the tacos were pretty zingy and tasty. My only complaint about about the tacos themselves is they were a bit too salty. I'd order again in a pinch, with a different side. Cod sandwich was the winner. I could smell the beer before I made mouth contact, the temperature was perfectly steamy beneath the crisp beer batter, and the toppings and condiments complimented while not overwhelming. It was served with garlic fries that were enjoyed by all. Would certainly order this again, I think all three of us agree on that. The service was great with the exception being that drinks were not refilled until requested (and empty). We will be back, and that's something we don't say much in this city. read more
