Great service with knowledge, friendly and PATIENT staff. A must! So here's the story... my friend and I made a spontaneous decision to get skates because we wanted to learn. Called around to a few stores to see if they had our size. Luckily 5 Stride had our sizes. Yay. We quickly hopped on CitiBikes and rode over. We did not have an appointment but were lucky enough to be serviced immediately with 0 wait time. We tried a few brands before deciding to on our purchase. We took FOREVER to decide brand and color of wheels and laces. Paco (staff) was patient and helpful in making sure we got everything we asked for. I don't know how she remained patient because if it was me I would have lost my mind with us. We were so indecisive. Nonetheless we left the shop happy customers with cool skates. I came here to get new bearings on my new outdoor skates, the ones they came with were not adequate. The staff here was super nice and helpful in setting up my skates. I recognize some of the folks working here as high profile skaters from performance crews tracing back to the Empire and Skate Key. I was glad I could test them out in-store and adjustments could be made in real time. Thanks everyone! See you out in the rinks! read more

This shop lives up to its reputation! The trains backed up and despite running behind, Paco helped me out! Great energy and super empathetic towards my little dog that was with me. I was nervous about being able to find the right skates due to my bigger body size, but Paco advised me on the right wheels and fit based on my price range. Definitely recommend the visit - avoid buying online (I've read tons of bad reviews about the poor quality skates out there). This is definitely one of those things you want to try on before purchasing. read more

These are lovely folks and very welcoming. Great selection of merchandise and so great to know that there are expert stores like this left in NYC! A few things: * I went out of my way to go to this store and support a local business instead of Amazon * Their hours are very limited, so this meant a two-hour trip on the subway for me * It's crazy that seeing products in person has become a treat, so it's important for us to support small businesses like this one. One area where they could improve: the up sell * They didn't have the product I wanted, even though it was listed on their website. The salesperson didn't seem concerned. Here are some phrases that would have encouraged me to buy from them instead of another (online) shop: "We're out of stock on that, but would you like us to contact you when it's in?" "Would you like me to special order that for you?" "Would you like to be on our mailing list?" I agree with other posters that the staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their merch, but you'll want to up your game if you're to compete with online stores. read more

I had such a good experience getting my first skates in yeeeearrrsss at five stride! I'm out of state and was concerned about sizing, but an employee (who was an experienced skater) had me measure my foot and talked me through sizing. I'm a man of my word and I said I'd take my negative review down upon receiving my refund (albeit, still 2 years late). Again, I understand shipping lines are all kinds of screwed due to covid. And I still think the owners need to be accountable and communicate better with customers directly in regards to delays and whatnot. But this is a cool and unique shop and y'all should still give them your business. This review is really for Roxy who has been nothing but helpful. Thank you, Roxy!!!!! Sorry I was a brat. What a great shop they have awesome dog and the dog is great! The staff is great they are really doing a great job helping a person navigate all the new things that are now in Roller-skating. They seem to be a full service shop and just really nice and helpful. They showed me a great range of boots and builds. You can get started for a little as $99 for some really comfortable skates. Not what you would think from the outside view but when you walk in... it pleasantly surprised. At first my husband and I looked around and loved it and we wanted help but no one helped us for a while... however, we got help from Max. He was a super friendly dude who was attentive and didn't seek to make us buy something extra. He explained wheels, bearings, trucks, and kingpins with the patience and skill of a master teacher. He fixed my husband's skates and gave him tips as a newbie and even motivated us to stay focused on roller skating as adults who are willing to try something new. I spent 2, 000 buying skates from this establishment my first experience two years ago was what made me return for a second pair of skates i made an appointment to get my skates mounted,and the sales associate telling me i had to wait 2hrsi traveled from Nj ,they not only price gouge and charged me 87 in taxes, and they had a real nasty attitude. I felt robbed and disrespected ,ill never buy anything and wont recommend any to that establishment. read more

The best skate shop on the EAST COAST! Come for all your skating needs ! This shop is run by Bonnie Thunders & OMGWTF did I mention that they are world champion roller derby skaters?! Because they are awesome and so helpful. Anytime I have had any question, comments,concerns they take the time to ensure that you are getting the right set up to suit your needs. I have been purchasing skates from them since 2010. My favorite part of this shop is Freddie ( he's an amazing pup ) he is just one of the many perks of this magical store! Very unfriendly staff. Not outwardly rude, though definitely not kind. Super low energy and blah. Wish they were more happy and excited to help the customers. It was my fiancé's first time buying roller skates and we were so excited, but the energy in the store kind of sucked all of the excitement out of us honestly. Sucks that this is the only place to get fitted and stuff but I suppose I'll just order online from now on. read more

My name is Terry Hollenquest. I placed order to be picked up on April 7, 2022. Traveled from Jamaica Queens to Brooklyn. Upon arrival needed to use restroom. Female service rep denied me access to restroom, stating I had to go across the street and around corner to restaurant. I was forced to go outside and urinate in street. A damn shame that business can take my money but not allow me the convenience of using restroom. The bathroom was usable so there was no excuse for the disrespect I endured. Will never again patronize this place. As a business owner for over 35 years, at NuTribe.VIP, would be happy to provide some much needed customer service tips to this shop. read more

So I bought $400 worth of skates and gear to use this summer and was told after the fact that they would take 8 weeks to arrive. Which is fine, I understand that Covid has slowed everything down. I ordered these skates in June, it is now August 6th and was told my estimated weight time is 10-12 weeks but they aren't certain which it is. I understand you're not the manufacturer, but 1, your customer service was snarky and pompous. 2 there's a level of respect that each person should be met with especially if you are lucky enough to have a job in this climate. Also I was at one point offered a partial refund for a product I spent money on months ago and haven't even been able to access. This is an unprofessional approach to this situation and I'm so disgusted by this that I honestly don't even want to pick up the skates now. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THEM read more

Anything you want for skating they have, except inline skates. The shop is a nice size space next to a music store and comes with a friendly shop dog. The two owners are top roller derby skaters and have a lot of knowledge about the stuff they are selling. Weather buying new skates or looking for a tune up they will help you out with a smile. Went to have new wheels and bearings for indoor use put on and to also purchase an outdoor set. Owner is a skater and VERY knowledgeable, she set me up and did the change while I waited. I'll be going back to have my friend sized to purchase new skates. HIGHLY recommend speaking to the staff before purchasing anything if you are relatively new, they will be able to help you make the best purchase decision. read more

Five Stride is the best resource for quad skating gear in the city. The store is co-owned by two roller derby legends (look 'em up: Bonnie Thunders and OMG WTF) so they're extremely knowledgeable on their wares. I really appreciate the time and attention they dedicate to each customer. I've come in with millions of questions and feeling helpless with my skates and have left completely satisfied with my purchases. Five Stride is a gem. read more

We are NYC's only full service roller skate shop. We are a skater owned and operated shop with a full selection of products for derby, rink, and recreational skaters. We specialize is custom set ups where we do the plate mounting in house but also have a selection of beginner and intermediate level skates. If we don't have a certain product in the shop, we can recommend an alternative or order in what you want

History

Established in 2010.

When we opened our doors in May 2010, we wanted to build a haven for all skaters to be able try on skates before buying. Knowledge and education is one of our core values and the store set out to build a generation of educated consumers who always had a place to turn for an honest opinion. We quickly grew out of the original Astoria, Queens shop and moved to Graham Ave in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the end of 2010. In mid 2015, we moved a little further east and are now located on Bushwick Ave in East Williamsburg. At the end of 2017, my partner and I moved to Portland, Oregon to open a second shop location but our heart and soul remains in the Brooklyn shop. All of the staff working at Five Stride BK are skaters themselves and have been trained by us. Over the years we have grown into a multidiscipline skate shop and have customers from all types of skating- derby, rink, recreational, ramp and park, and roller figure.

Meet the Business Owner: Bonnie T.

Nicole Williams aka Bonnie Thunders started playing roller derby with the Gotham Girls Roller Derby league in 2006. Prior to roller derby, she skated for 14 years on ice. Bonnie is one of the most notable derby skaters in the world and has been compared to the likes of Lebron James. After moving to Portland, OR she started skating with the World Champion Rose City Rollers in 2018. Prior to opening Five Stride, Bonnie worked at non profit organizations working on wildlife conservation. Drew Flowers aka OMG WTF played with Gotham Girls from 2009 until retiring after the 2017 season. OMG's previous athletic experience includes Division 1 collegiate soccer. OMG is a trained bicycle mechanic and previously owned a bike shop. They are an expert with plate mounting and repair. Together, Bonnie and OMG skated with Gotham Girls for 5 World Championship gold medals and skated for USA Roller Derby at the 2015 Roller Derby World Cup. Bonnie remains a USA team member and OMG is the Head Coach.

We got to the water / domino park (where they hand out the wrist bands) at 8:50am. They start handing them out at 8:30am. NO ONE WAS THERE. We picked out of the bag and got in the high 50's!! I understand they're trying to make it fair. However, the problem wasn't that we pulled a high number. The problem was that at 11am, security let so many people cut the line. Those who had wrist bands and those who didn't. We even saw one of the security guard's give out a wrist band at 11:30am (which they have been telling everyone they wouldn't do after 10:30). That person is already in the store and we're still waiting in line. We're so upset and refuse to come again on a drop day. FAIL BY SECURITY. Go to the Manhattan store. Don't waste your time at this location. Unfriendly staff when you're paying an arm and a leg. I would give it 0/5 if I could. We were regulars - here 2/3 times a week. No longer will we do that.

The staffer, Mikey with door free form locs a beautiful accent fetched them for me and was super engaging complementing my style and inquiring about my day. The store has a wide selection of goods but it is also a high traffic location and so items sell out fast. Lines are ridiculous on the day of releases and well pricing is typical to what the brand sells and who they collaborate with. Experience was 10/10. No complaints here

The poor reviews this place has received are warranted and accurate. My experience -- I dropped my bike off on the 19th was told I would receive a quote for the repairs. Initially the ballpark quote was around $100 and these repairs were *necessary*. 12 days later no word from them. I tried calling just their phones aren't working. When I told the guy working that the phone lines were down he just shrugged his shoulders saying "yea they're down. No repairs done after 12 days and now the cost of repairs was $150. I was pretty pissed at having to physically come in to the shop to get a status update on my bike. Regardless, when I told them I wanted to take my bike without having them service it they charged me an ASSESSMENT FEE(?!). I've been riding bikes for decades and have never been charged an assessment fee for just having a repair shop look at my bike. Isn't that what they're paid to do? When I took it to another (read: better) bike shop down the road they too laughed at the idea of an assessment fee. I hate this place. I have spent hundreds of dollars in the last three months at their shop and they are constantly looking at ways to up charge me. In the end, the other bike shop said my bike was fine and needed zero repairs. As stated earlier, the negative reviews you see about this place are spot on. I will never return and I encourage all bikers to visit Bike Plant or another -- literally any other bike shop -- in the area.

When BQ Sports popped up, it was like a time warp walking back in -- the shop looks exactly how I left it in 2000, in the best nostalgic way possible. This place is super authentic, super old-school, and still delivering top-tier quality in 2025. The blanks are quality, the varsity jackets are quality, and the embroidery is perfection. I brought in a blank Reebok Pro Line jersey and had it customized into an Amani Toomer -- it literally looks like I pulled it off the rack in 1999. Couldn't ask for anything better. End of the day: their work is amazing, the turnaround time is solid, and their craftsmanship is unmatched. I picked up a few more blanks and George is already lined up to customize them ASAP. I'll keep coming here as long as those doors are open. And ignore the negative comments -- Kathy is a busy woman, yes she's on her phone, but she ALWAYS takes care of her customers. The workers in this shop are racist. My daughter and I called prior to going and we were told to "come on down". When we arrived, we were then told that we had to wait because they already had an upcoming appointment. Why didn't they say that on the phone? Oh, because they didn't see we were Black on the phone, that's why. We waited the requisite time and their appointment didn't show. They said the appointment had a 15 minute grace period. We were minutes past the grace period. They still did not want to let us it. The appointment arrived later, and you guessed it, they took the appointment. We we are Black. They are not. They need to take the picture of George Floyd and Black Trans Lives matter off their windows. We don't need fake allies. read more

He gave me a few beginner tips and let me futz around on the board in the store to see how I felt on it. They also told me they give one free lessons when you buy a complete and that they plan to give on-going paid lessons. These guys know what they are doing and they are the best, friendliest, place in the area. They are always getting in new decks, parts and completes, so make sure if you don't see something you need you can ask and they might be able to order it for you.
