Proven Performance -- Excellent Planning and Design I just received my 3rd True-up bill. The 1st one was for $0.00, the second was for $35.00, and my last one was for $7.00. That means that the planning and design for my solar system was near perfect. Everything about my Solar project was well done -- the planning, permitting, installation, and monthly performance has been a great success, and has yielded great performance. While the physical install was done well (and in one day due to me arranging with the Billl Hamilton Roofing - see my review on them - they rock) to seal the footings, I was never given the password for the Enphase controller despite repeated promises from Dustin he would. I can't modify the configuration (e.g. add another battery or more panels) without calling Five-Star. While I liked Dustin and the work his crew did, they can screw me if I have to change anything in the future. 5-Star Solar also had major mistakes in the site drawings that I had to point out. Both in the site layout and engineering details. The site plan submitted for permits for example just made up a number for wind load instead of calculating it (there is a standard which defines how to do this). I also now regret that I didn't spend more time investigating other solar controller systems which include whole home battery backup. 5-star Solar wanted to charge me another $4500 for 6-circuit backup (which I declined) which would require moving circuits to a new sub-panel. Other systems (e.g. FranklinWH) include whole-house back-up and offer more battery storage capacity for about the same price. 5-star did charge me an additional $3500 to tilt one row of the solar panels beyond the standard 10 degrees - but only to 30 degrees despite Dustin promising me they could tilt this PV array to 35 or 40 degrees. This felt both misleading and a rip-off. I used https://pvwatts.nrel.gov/pvwatts.php to model why the additional 10 degrees matters in the winter. I would not buy Enphase battery system again and I'm seriously considering replacing the battery and controller/gateway for three reasons: 1) no configuration password as mentioned above. 2) Access to monitor the system depends on getting an authentication token from Enphase. I don't trust them for 20 years (or more) to provide that. At some point they'll just stop supporting the "old equipment". 3) Enphase battery inverters only produce 240V and regularly have to imported power for 120V "unbalanced loads" (across the two 120V legs of a standard USA split-phase power grid). With PG&E rates on NEM 3.0, I estimated this will cost me about an extra $3000 over 20 years. Anyway, besides overpaying and not getting all the features I wanted, the system is still running - but as another reviewer pointed out, that says more about Enphase (known for reliability) than the installer. read more

Solar panels installed just fine and worked as expected. Installers did a fine job, left the area clean as I appreciated. But the money part wasn't handled correctly. Many calls, more emails with no responses for almost a year. I did not get what was promised and as per usual it was somebody else's problem not Five Star's. It soured my opinion to say the least. I'm disappointed in how this wasn't handled and management just washes their hands of any responsibility. read more

5 years ago this company installed 20 panels on my roof. I had to replace my roof, something I was not aware needed to be done, if Dustin or his crew had told me this, I would have replaced the roof first. Now I am forced to remove all 20 panels. This was something I asked Dustin to come and do, I offered to pay his fees of course. Then he ghosted me...did not take my calls or reply to my texts. So I hired another company at a much higher cost...which is not a problem. But the new company showed me that the mounting brackets that hold the rails down were put in upside down. Wow...what a bunch of hacks. One of his crew fell thru my ceiling and the result was an ugly patch job. I was also lied to about there being no access in one part of my attic. My electrician had no problem getting back there and he said it was a little challenging, but very doable. Dustin's crew was just lazy. My solar system was not installed properly, the fact that it works is not a testimony to 5 Star Solar, it's just that the equipment works. I won't be recommending this company any longer. Called around and got quotes from many solar companies. Five Star Solar was by far the best company to go with. They quoted me the best price, and what stood was that they use Panasonic panels versus the IQ8 panels, which are not that great. They are quick to respond, with no delays in their service. I contacted this company to get a quote for residential solar but then found out the same day (or day after, I can't recall) that I would be getting a small pay cut at work due to a bargaining unit contract expiring. So I contacted Cori, a female consultant there, to cancel any request for a bid. She took care of it on their end but I'd also responded previously to an automated text from their company to schedule a phone call. Every time it texted me a reminder I told it I wanted to cancel but it kept sending me reminders, like it couldn't understand. No biggie, but... The phone appt. time came and a Mr. Johnson called me and I explained how I'd tried to cancel the appt. via text as well since I can't enter any new financial agreements due to the pay cut. Right away he raised his voice and said "This is a waste of my time!" I was shocked and alarmed. I do NOT like to be shouted at, especially by males. I told him I'd arranged with Cori to cancel and he said something to the effect of "this is the 2nd or 3rd time she's done this!" and sounded angry. But she had done her job properly and I had to try and calm him down and explain it was the text system that was the issue. Maybe I should've realized it didn't understand me typing full sentences, such as "I want to cancel this appointment". I think they should use a system that has very simple commands like "Type Y to confirm, C to cancel, R to reschedule". I've seen those before and they seem to work well. I finally talked him off the ledge so he wouldn't be mad at a woman who had done her job just fine...I didn't want to throw her under the bus when it was me who got bad news and had to back out kind of last minute. But I tell ya - if I was still in the market for solar, I wouldn't go with a company who employed someone who'd yell at people. I mean, geez - he shouted it was a waste of time after less than 60 seconds on the phone?!? What if I'd let him in my house for a presentation and decided against it? How awful would it be to have a contract with them - what if it was in the middle of a job and I had concerns or questions? What if something went south? I really wouldn't want to deal with a hothead! It's very unprofessional. I hope others had a good experience, for their sakes, but this was my short-lived one. read more

Out of 9 solar installation quotes, Ron from Five Star Solar gave me the best price, included extra features, and was incredibly polite. He even arranged for a fantastic price on replacing my air conditioning units that beat out five other quotes. Six months later, I'm still happy I went with Five Star Solar. I no longer pay PG&E for electricity. Previously, my PG&E bill was $960 a month. I now pay $220 a month in financing for the solar and AC. The best was the tax refund that came from this. I usually owe, but this year because of the solar installation, I'm getting a refund and have an additional tax credit for next year. Dustin from Five Star Solar is also quick to fix any problems that arise with the system. Glitches happen, such as with an old circuit box original to the home. He stands by his work to ensure the system was hooked up correctly. He's patient and doesn't judge when clients are cranky over glitches. He fixes the glitch. Our property in the Santa Cruz mountains burned in the CZU fires last October. We were very remote and had power outages all the time. We had a large generator sitting on a trailer that would power the entire complex. When we moved to another property, the first thing we were looking for was a generator to power the house in case the grid went down. That led me to looking at Solar and the batteries to store the generated power. We talked to a couple of solar companies but Five Star Solar stood out from the rest. They installed the panels and two large battery storage units. But what we really like is the Enphase software that monitors all of this and allows us in real time to see how much we are producing, sending to the batteries and exporting to the grid. Five Star Solar made finding, buying and installing a residential solar system about as easy as it is possible to make such a complex undertaking. We got six bids before we decided on Fire Star. Theirs was not the lowest bid, but their reputation, longevity and clear explanations of the equipment and process convinced us they were the right choice. That opinion did not change as the project progressed. I would make the same choice again. Once installation began, the crew and electrician had the racks installed, panels secured and electrical connections made in about six hours (and that included me peppering the electrician with questions as he worked). Two things: * Buying a solar system is complicated requiring a good deal of reading/research especially for those unfamiliar with the technology. Five Star was good about answering questions and explaining things in non-technical terms. * It's going to take longer than you expect. From start to finish our project took two or three months (and that was after we re-roofed our home). Much of the delay came not from Five Star but from permit approval and inspection delays, in our case by the county. There also will be a delay before the power utility (PG&E) signs off. That approval is needed to receive credit for sending electricity into the power grid. For our money, Five Star Solar was the right choice. read more

I booked an appointment with this company to install a communication system between my computer and solar system and to clean my solar panels. They said they would be here at 8 a.m. on Saturday. We had company from out of state so it was not the best time but we already had to wait 3 weeks for this appointment so I accepted it. We got up at 7 a.m. to make sure we are ready when they are here. Needless to say, they never showed. I called and left a message at 8:15 to see if they are still coming. They managed to send me a text at 9:34 that they can come on Sunday at 8 a.m. No apologies, nothing. When I asked what happened with this morning's appointment, the answer was "my guys had a project that ran over from yesterday". I guess it is too much to ask for a courtesy call. Renaming the company from "Five Star Solar" to "We Might Show Up" or "No Courtesy Calls Here" would be a better reflection of their services. read more
