We contracted Five Star to work on our house that was damaged from tornado hail in July 2024. September 2025 the work has been completed. The staff that came over to do the work were all amazing. The work completed was top notch. Communication is what lead to the 3 stars. The sales and lead are extremely hard to get in contact with. The project began and they never ordered the correct color j channels. We had to pivot and go with white or wait another 1-3 weeks for the color to come in. This was figured out after the house was stripped. Our gutters were off all summer and we had to keep pestering them about when they will come complete the gutters. We were also waiting on the schedule for the garage door. Finally told they no longer can help with replacing the garage door, their organization had changed this summer and no longer works in that sector. We had to find a different contractor. One of the reasons we went with this company is due to they could work on all the projects. Had a few issues with the siding warping and cracking within a few months. Once we heard back, they quickly came out and replaced the damaged siding. We communicated with the lead to be cautious around my peony garden. That was never communicated to the workers. Crushed some of my plants. The work and quality was very good, communication needs improved. read more

I reluctantly had them remodel 2 of my bathrooms under the false impression that the installer would be a certified Jacuzzi Bath Remodeler. I'm 65 years old and dealing with this shady group has been the worst customer experience of my life - by a long shot. As the saying goes, the fish rots from the head down and this group of liars is a textbook example. I've been either lied to, or misled by, every person I interacted with at "5 Star Improvements". Starting at the head of the fish with an owner who said "all of my guys are certified" (and then schemed with the worst project scheduler I've ever dealt to send an email to me with a fake training certificate attachment (that the installer never saw before!)); to the person who answers the chat line ("I can't answer that online, I'll forward it to the office and we'll get back to you"); to a receptionist who deceived me into thinking I was complaining about the company to a Jacuzzi Bath Remodel employee; to yet another employee who told me the owners were not in the office ("they're both out of office and at a conference tomorrow") when I demanded to talk to one. On the bright side, the uncertified installer did a great job and he didn't go along with the fake certificate scheme when I asked him about it and showed him the bogus certificate. We are very satisfied with the experience we had with Five Star Improvements. We watched the pristine job they did installing roof across the street and had them over for estimate. We interviewed 5 companies and narrowed down to 2 based on thoroughness of estimates, communication, knowledgeability, references and pricing. Five Star exceeded our expectations from the start with a comprehensive review of our roof and unique structural issues of a historic home; providing contingency backup plans should they be necessary. Their communication was excellent from sales through to the installation and clean up. They were meticulous and hardworking. Showed up every morning at 7:30 and worked till dark to finish up before we had to leave to go out of town. The final price was in line with the original quote. foreman and his crew were very professional and conscientious with their work. Absolutely horrible experience! Signed contract for bath remodel in July and company cashed our check one week later without scheduling remodel date.The sales rep later said they would call us to schedule a date. We still hadn't received a call by September so we called the company. They then told us excuses as to why no one had and finally scheduled the date to begin in October and said it would be a 1 day job. They ended up sending 1 worker out who immediately said it was a 1 1/2 day job . The job ended up taking until DECEMBER to complete. We had to make multiple phone calls to the company because the worker would not show up when he said he would. The worker had to make dozens of calls to his boss throughout the job for various issues. There was many times the worker showed up without the correct materials and would have to drive back and forth from Syracuse to Rochester. Because they only sent 1 person, we had to help carry up the heavy glass doors and my husband had to help the worker with the actual remodel. To top it all off, the worker installed the wrong shower trap which required a hole cut into our closet to fix it. This is after he did not install the shelving in the bath correctly and misaligned where we wanted the shower head and handle. There were many incidents of finger pointing between the boss, the worker, and other various employees in the company. I feel we never ultimately received the product we had asked for and this company created an extremely stressful and disruptive environment in my household. read more

Yelp didn't have many reviews (which is why I'm putting this here) but the reviews I saw elsewhere were top notch. From the moment I called to the last day of remodel, I was completely blown away. Be very careful hiring this company. I am a contractor myself but did not have the time to do the work; yet ended up doing it myself anyways because it is impossible to find a fair and honest contractor let alone one that shows up or returns phone calls. How these guys are still in business is beyond me. I'm not just talking about 5 star but literally 90% of the contractors out there. Had them give me an estimate to rough frame a mud room for me which took me 2 days to do and the materials cost me $1,300. Guess what the estimate was they gave me for 2 days of work and materials?!? $16,000 Are you f'in kidding me??!! Had them give me an estimate for our bathroom which took me a day and a half to do. Guess what the estimate was for that?!!? $8,000 so in essence they wanted to charge me $24,000 for 3 and a half days of work. These companies disgust me!!! Got the same type of estimates from the other guys that showed up. That being said... the only way that this is going to change is if people refuse to get exploited any longer and stop paying these prices!! read more

I hired this company in April to move a door. We waited a couple months for them to start. Day one they blocked every exit from the house for the whole day. I got hurt trying to get around their truck. They did nothing about that. The wall where the door was was sealed up. The door was moved to a different wall. It was installed backwards, doesn't close or lock & they charged us for new steps but used the old ones. They left a mess for me to clean up. They didn't come back. I have been calling for months to get them to come & finish, but they have ignored me. Finally, I told them I wanted my money back for the steps & they needed to fix the door. A few days later, while no one was home, they made new steps - which I no longer wanted. They have never fixed the door. They charged us nearly $10,000. It's the worst job & the company is still ignoring me. Please don't waste your time or money on this company. read more

5 Star provided me with the worse construction job ever. Right from.the beginning, communication was poor. We were unable to converse with non English speaking workers who were hard working but unskilled. Contract was not honored and materials were of inferior quality. On one occasion, my lovely elderly wife was almost hit on her head by all the debris left on the roof. Jason Pignagrande was immediately contacted and provided with images involving our roof jpb. Flashing for skylights was not properly secured or up to code. Underlayment was lacking or appeared to be cardboard. Water damage and structural damage occurred due to faulty installation. We are professional educators and have worked hard for our savings. The end results from this job has been extremely distressing. We are praying that Jason Pignagrande honors our wishes. We recently contacted this company for a major roof and skylight repair job a year and half ago. The job cost $33,000 and as of this date, we still have leaking, water and structural damage due to poor quality roof repair. The initial job was completed without proper supervision or a professional crew manager. The high end materials that we purchased was stolen, reportedly stolen by one of managers who failed to return . Instead of weatherproofing, the workers used cardboard under our shingles. Major leaking was noted into our walls plus from skylights. The initial crew consisted of hardworking non English speaking workers who worked in the dark and during high winds. The owner Jason Pignagrande was contacted and we were told a second full crew of extremely skilled workers would come out and repair the job. We were told to hire an inspector after the second job was completed to review completion of work. The job was to be a full tear off. The second crew consisted of 1 person who worked the entire summer. We again experienced water damage, mold and insulation issues due to our roof. We hired a licensed inspector to examine 5 Star roofing job. The infractions were numerous including faulty and not up to code installation of flashing, lack of weatherproofing, improperly installed shingles, improper ventilation and multiple other concerns. Again we contacted Jason Pignagrande who refused to compensate for damages. He state he could send a really good crew this time and denied his workers caused the damages to our home. Beware... avoid dealing with Five Star. This company signed a contract over 10 months ago to renovate my 1892 Victorian, has done almost none of the contracted work, and the little they did is incomplete and/or not to code nor to the architectural plan, meanwhile sitting on $70K of my hard-earned money, stringing me along for months and months with empty promises, lies, and excuses. They will tell you they obtained permits and inspections but they will not actually get the plumbing and electrical permits, and you'll find out the hard way they lied to you (when the city inspector shuts off your electrical service because FiveStar didn't get the permit for electrical work, so there are no lights on inside or outside of your house, putting your belongings and property at risk and costing you a huge fee and a lot of hassle to try to get an electrical permit later on). Occasionally someone will show up to do demo for a few hours and it's a single, unskilled, unsupervised laborer who has no idea what he's doing or what he should be demo'ing, drinks (alcohol) while on the job, and leaves holes in the walls and haphazard patch of demo here and leaving plaster/lathe there, so drywill be almost impossible to piece in the drywall Items are stolen from your house. The framing is haphazard, with broken and old boards installed and failure to nail boards down in many places, and odd sizes of door openings (again not according to the architectural plan nor the the size of the beautiful Victorian interior doors they had agreed to reuse. A few months later you might get a cut-rate plumbing subcontractor to finally show up that will do less than half of the job you contracted with FiveStar to do (despite the $14,500 you stupidly paid FiveStar for rough plumbing), it won't be according to code, they totally botch installation of basement drain line, and no one ever shows up to finish the work (what? rough plumbing includes attaching pex to the water supply line? plumbing should have ptraps and vents? (which also happens to be specified in the contract but not done) new drywall should include insulation on exterior walls? (which oh by the way is also part of Rochester building code). 8 months will go by before your windows even show up, then turns out they ordered the wrong color, wrong size, they "forgot" to order half of them, the installer put them in haphazardly, eg crooked, at different heights for windows next to each other on same wall. They refused to re-order the windows in the dark color requested to match the original trim in the house and said they'd instead re-stain the moldings to match. 3 more months go by and still the window installation is less than half done, no one has shown up, and of course they've done nothing about the trim color. 10 months go by and your staircase is still not rebuilt that you paid them thousands for (and you have to ask numerous times before they even bother to order the parts for the stairway, because they (illegally) used your money for something else not related to your house so they couldn't afford to order stair parts)... they will do demo after framing instead of before, cause alot of damage including to your classic tray ceiling in the dining room, breaking original 1892 ornate iron scrollwork furnace vents (with no apology or compensation), and flooding your basement because their cut-rate plumbers removed the downspouts from the drains and no one bothered to put them back for weeks until I noticed when visiting (the house is still uninhabitable)... When you eventually get fed up and desperate because of the lack of progress and you need a place to live, so you have to start being your own GC and line up contractors yourself to do all the work that FiveStar is already contracted to do and meanwhile you're double paying because FiveStar still won't return your money. They say they'll provide "a credit" from the $70K you naively gave them, then the "credit" they offer for electrical and hvac only would cover 1/10 of the actual cost to do the job right and get the permits they failed to. They'll claim that installing shower pans/liners and installing gas lines to range and dryer really aren't part of rough plumbing to bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry rm as contracted. Do not pay them, do not trust them -- you will get next to no work out of them and what you do get will be poorly done... and you won't get your money back without a long drawn-out court battle. read more

We had Five * replace all of our windows in our home in 2010. One of their selling points was a life time guarantee from manufacturer of windows...replace at no cost. We currently have five windows that need replacing due to seal failure. When we called office, the person asked what kind of window?? When service rep., Eric, came out he asked same question. Looked at one window and told husband manufacturer out of business and proceeded to say what a hardship it has been to the company (Five *) and they have lost lots money as a result. Can't do for free but would not charge for labor. Told us he would have do a quote because price based on size and we had at least 3 different sizes. We had him measure and get back to us with quote. Called the next day and quoted $350 per window. Wait a minute. What happened to the each window will cost a different price?? I went back thru original paperwork and found quotes which showed approximately $300 per window...that price included the window and cost to install. Somehow I do not believe we are getting any deal here. My husband put it best....why reward them by purchasing windows thru them once again when they did not do their part in honoring lifetime guarantee. We recommended Five * to others and others bought from them. Now we feel that Five Star is more concerned with their problems and not so much about ours. We have contacted other firms and asked what would they do in that kind of situation?? The answer was...anything and everything to make sure the customer is satisfied. Only 7 years ago, I made a miserable selection in having Five Star Home Improvement do a complete tearoff and partial redecking roof job on my home in Pittsford, NY. Five Star boasted of their "PLATINUM" installer rating with Owens-Corning which I thought was very impressive. What a nightmare that job turned into. To start off the sourness as the job ended, I had given a punch list of issues to the company owner at our walkthtrough. Gutter heating wires needed to be reinstalled and gutter guard which they had sold me still needed to be installed. Many loose nails still on the roof and in the yard needed to be cleaned up. I withheld $500 from the final payment pending those things being taken care of. Apparently, that was not enough money, because they never came back! I had to do those things on the punchlist myself. I don't need to go up into the attic very often so it took me a couple of years before I noticed a bad moisture problem in the attic which was never an issue before that roof job was done. Five Star had installed about 20 new plywood sheets as part of the job. Very ironically, I found black mold was growing on most of the new plywood sheets but not on the old ones that were not replaced! The chimney was leaking all around its periphery into the attic. Even though I had paid for new flashing to be installed, the bathroom skylight was leaking into the attic and into the bathroom. The roof vent over my bedroom, leaked so badly that the water seaped thru to the ceiling and a 3 foot by 1 foot area on the bedroom ceiling was slowly ruined. The paint was peeling and there was black mold underneath the pealing paint. It became clear that the worker who installed the flashing at the chimney, skylight and vent just did not know how to do that properly! So a lot of moisture was getting into my attic, especially at snow melting times. Further, I now know that although the Five Star company presentation touted how they would achieve proper ventillation, they totally screwed up the way that they installed baffles at the eaves without backing off the insulation so that the air flow could occur. As a result, my attic got excessively hot in the summer and that moisture from the leaks was always trapped inside the attic! I got no satisfaction trying to communicate with the owner of Five Star. My calls were ignored for a long time until one day I finally got the owner. He sent a technician to address my issues. Even though he was kneeling right next to the filthy wet rolled up towels all around the chimney, he tried to blame the moisture and black mold on condensation on a copper pipe and a bathroom vent that leaked a little into the attic. But that vent was in the extra bathroom which was hardly ever used! I was flabbergasted by such a comment. I lost my cool and told him to get the heck out of my house! That roof job was a total failure. Frankly, although I had complained bitterly, I didn't want Five Star workers anywhere near my roof to address the failures. This past spring I hired Roofing Rochester to correct all this horror. You are welcome to read that review also...quite the opposite of this one. read more

listed a BBB menber so I asumed they were reputable Wrong. They promised work would be done in around a month. Wrong. almost 6. first team of 6 people 4 men 2 women no one spoke english and started to remove main roof . job was for small pourch and an out building. they put a sign out and the code inspector showed up. he explained that 5 star has many fines for code violations and failing to get pemits. 5 star also remove the roof from a wrong house in the area. 2nd team, replacing face boards. complete mess. did not replace all rotted wood , many edges had huge holes and extreamly bad edges. left big braces from old gutters hanging down on side of house and in one spot left a big sheet of tin from old repair hanging on house exposing huge hole into roof. 3rd team, gutters. new gutters leak out seems water runs behind gutters and runs into house. all 3 teams were subcontractors to 5 star and looked filthy and the trucks and tools were depressing. 5 star was massively impossoble to get in touch with and always had an excuse for NO replys. I had 46 attempts as far as calls, emails and texts. now they just want money and told me they would do noting about the shoddy work on my house. have to hire another contractor to fix what they did. read more

Of the roofers we contacted, Jason was the only one to suggest a repair, as apposed to a whole new roof (which we just couldn't afford.) 5 STAR was more affordable then the others and did great work. One of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. Contacted them to give us a estimate on our front porch. They came out on March 29th to look it over to see what we were looking for. April 9th still no word from them, I reach out to a Tim the person who came out and he explain to me that he is busy with the wind storm etc and will get back to me by the end if the week. May 2nd I email Tim. Still no response two days later. I call the company to make sure Tim still works there. He does. Wondering why they wouldn't even want to give us a quote. The lack of communication and professionalism is quite disturbing. I highly recommend calling someone else. read more

One of the worst contractor experiences of my life. Their lack of communication and professionalism is astounding. I highly recommend looking elsewhere. (Their Facebook reviews are poor too) Quick run down of what to expect from my experience: 1. They will give you a quote without any one looking at the roof from the outside. 2. You don't hear back from them until you reach out to them about when we can schedule a time for the work to be done. 3. You receive an email via their cell phone (signature says iPhone) that someone may be there that weekend and to standby. *I stayed home all weekend prepared for some call or message about a time that they will show up for work. 4. The following week you receive an invoice with a due date of that day. 5. You constantly call, email, and try to contact them via their office and cell phone and leave messages, since you need to know what work was done on your roof, especially given that nobody witnesses this work being done. Not even the home owner who was home! 6. They will return your call randomly a couple of times during work hours (10:30am). They will not answer when you call them back, even if it's immediately after. 7. They will send you a text message threatening to send to collections and file a lien. 8. You send text messages back asking for information about who worked on your house, when, and what was done. This should be a standard procedure, but they failed to do that. 9. You will finally answer their call and take time out of an important meeting to talk to them. 10. They treat you like you are a criminal and trying to dodge payment, even though all you want to know is WHAT work was done!?! 11. You pay the final amount so that you can move on from this horrible company. Unfortunately, You will have to hire someone else to actually go on the roof and take a look to see if anything was actually repaired. You will feel ripped off from poor business practices. Work done on our gutters was fine, but scheduling and billing was ridiculously complicated. Their scheduler only schedules on Tuesday mornings, during the business day, and if you miss the call you can't talk to anyone. It took over a month to get our job scheduled, with a lot of missed communication regarding materials drop off and pick up. Billing invoice neglected to include our deposit, and had I not caught it I'm sure they wouldn't have realized we over paid. Good on-site contracting, terrible administrative experience. read more
