Ambience is great with mixture of seating options for variety of needs. Light music and drink options including unique fountain sodas. My husband got white rice, tilapia, sweet potatoes, mango bbq sauce, and spicy chimichurri. First bite, and I felt like turning cartwheels. So flavorful and delicious! We've never had Brazilian food before, and now, I hang my head in shame for not trying it sooner. The meat in the feijoada was so tender, and it paired beautifully with everything else. I will absolutely be dreaming of it, and that spicy chimichurri. I'd happily eat both if they were served on a flip flop. I tried my husband's tilapia and sweet potatoes, and I'd eat it again, even though I don't like tilapia. They also make the food there! Say whaaaat?! No wonder it tastes so fresh! They have organic soda, too. I got blood orange and my husband got coconut, and we mixed them with the fig apple cider vinegar drink. It was so refreshing! Unlike similar places, Five on Black gives it a Brazilian twist. It's fast food, it's gluten-free, and it's good. The bowls are available in two sizes and I found the smaller bowl to be more than enough. Starting with the base with a choice of white or brown rice or romaine or a mix, you add a grilled item / protein (avoid the meat and stay vegan), a side, sauce and toppings. The friendly employees here work quickly, so I didn't have to wait long. As your bowl works its way down the line, you may be offered a cheese bun. Don't get it if you're dairy-free, but If you aren't, it's a good compliment to the slightly spicy fare. There's no added sugar to any of the menu items and if you get the beets or the sweet potatoes, they'll have enough sweetness to satisfy that taste. Five on Black can easily become addictive. There is nothing in the decor of this place that absorbs sound. It's loud, noisy, and full of activity. They warn you on the sign as you walk in. I docked a star because I felt like the flavors just didn't POP as much as they should have. The "spicy chimichurri" that I mixed into one of my bowls I couldn't really taste at all. There's a LOT going on in these bowls, so some things get lost or forgotten. **I recommend getting the sauces on the side and adding as needed because they overpower all the other flavors** I did appreciate the complexity of the bowls. In fact, it tastes good. However, I'd bet the biodegradable to-go container costs more than the food ingredients, and I'd still it's less than $1.50 total hard cost. Well then refuse the cups! Don't go against your morals and values of what your restaurant stands for! The food was bland. Tasteless really. Overpriced bowls of lettuce, brown rice, black beans, chicken and some sauce on top. Nothing you can't get from a lean cuisine at home and a side salad. I asked for salsa, but apparently they changed the name of salsa to tomato vinaigrette. So, if you are looking for an expensive bland burrito in a bowl, try this place. I don't remember the combos we got because I forgot to finish this review until two months later but we both loved our food.
