Feeling a need for nostalgia, I took my sons to Val's Burgers today. The man who took my order is still working there after all these years so he must be in his 70's-ish. A lot has changed with Val's. They're only open now from 11am-5pm Fridays and Saturdays. It's to-go orders only (unless you want to sit outside but there are only 3 tables), no dining in the restaurant anymore. No milkshakes after 1pm and it's now cash only. So you call them, place your order, then they give you the total over the phone. When you arrive, you call them back and they bring out your food to you and you pay them the cash. I ordered 2 Mama burgers (the Papa burgers are 1lb of meat, btw), 2 shakes and just 1 order of their thick cut steak french fries (the bag of French fries feeds approx 3 people). The total came out to $71ish. The food is STILL really good though (my sons would have definitely said something if it wasn't worth it - trust me), EXPENSIVE - but good! There's enough parking and because you can't go into the restaurant you don't have to worry about wheelchair accessibility. For me, the fact that Carmen has kept this place still open after all these years long after Al's passing (RIP) was worth the 45 minute drive for me. It shows me that the family chose to stick it out and make it work and they did it for the Hayward community! In 'n Out or The Habit, on the other hand, is not worth it for me - despite what other reviewers on here say.

Never had any issues ordering drinks or getting food and we put in 3 separate orders. Shout out to the bartender, who was a Packers fan and came over to high five us whenever the Packers scored. It's always fun when there's more camaraderie! We still haven't found a Packers bar in South Bay, so check this place out if you're a Packers fan and you'll at least have one buddy at the bar. The Packers collapsed in typical recent Packer fashion, but I digress... The food: Buffalo Wings - Pretty happy with this. Nice crust and sauce. Comes with celery, carrots, and ranch. Some places don't even give this out anymore (sadness). Half Order Nachos with Carnitas - This was a good portion for our group. Carnitas was tasty. Bourbon Brussels - Brussels sprouts with bacon bourbon garlic and onion maple sauce. This sauce is boss. Thought the sprouts were fried a tad too long, but this was tasty. Lemon Pepper Wings - Good flavor, but our order got way over salted. Either that or Lemon Pepper sauce had too much salt. Still edible, but not my preference. Tacos - this was the only fail for the items we ordered. The tortillas were ok. The steak was really dry (avoid carne asada). Got some pickled vegetables but this could have used some salsa. Everyday happy hour from 4-6:30 PM with discounted drinks and appetizers. All their food options are listed on their website. They had 14 beers on tap with a couple of canned options as well. It's a full bar, so they also had wine and cocktails. Non alcoholic options available as well. Great place to watch a full game. Never felt rushed and the other patrons are polite.
