These are the burgers you're looking for. I swear by Downtown Punch Burger, and it's the burger place I always send visiting relatives and out of town friends to. They cook fantastic, straight-ahead burgers but also offer creative and tasty burgers with flair. My favorite is the Bleu burger with a turkey patty. But feel free to get as weird with it as you want. They really bring the idea of "Have It Your Way" to life. The Carmel location isn't quite up to the Downtown Indy level. The burgers were basically the same, but not quite as flavorfully popping. The service, cleanliness, etc., was all perfectly fine taken on its own merits. But compared to Downtown Punch Burger, doesn't quite measure up. I'd definitely say give them a try if you're in Carmel and looking for a good burger. A kind employee walked us through the menu. They are famous for their Shack burgers, but started out as a hot dog stand. We ordered and paid at the counter, although they also have kiosks for ordering as well. I had a single Shack Burger and fries. The fries are hand cut and super fresh with a nice crisp. The fries are large enough to share. The Shack Burger is good, comes with cheese, lettuce and tomato that were fresh. My husband had the Flat-Top hot dog which is made from Vienna beef. The large dog is split and grilled. Fixings were limited to ketchup and packets of mustards. He would have liked some onions and relish. Otherwise, the dog was very good. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is made fresh so takes awhile to prepare. They give you a table number and deliver the food to your table. The restaurant has about 20 tables inside and a dozen outside on the patio. On the patio, there is water for your trusty canine. I was surprised to see they serve wine and beer. The wine comes in cans. I did not try, as it was early in the day. A nearby food pantry was collecting donations. A portion of the daily sales went to the food pantry. They support the community. Internet signal was weak in the restaurant, but maybe that will improve with time. I did not see a drive-through. There was plenty of parking in the dedicated lot.

It is usually my kids' go-to option when they want a burger, even more than that other chain from Wisconsin. This Freddy's location, though, was a little rough around the edges. The tables were dirty and askew, it took almost 25 minutes to receive our food, and the restaurant was smoky from poor ventilation, among other things. Maybe it was just my visit today. I'm hoping it was just an off day. I want to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt. And it looked like they were short staffed, which didn't help at all. We got our food and the order was correct and it tasted great, though, so that was a bonus. I got the chili cheese fries, which kinda hit the spot, but Freddy's has shoestring fries, and I think chili cheese fries need those big, thick fries. We were going to get frozen custard sundaes after our meal, but I could tell that they were still struggling to fulfill the drive-thru and online orders, so I didn't step up to the counter to order again. I didn't want to wait another half hour! I still love Freddy's, though. It's hard not to love this chain because the food is so good. So I will probably come back and hope that my next visit is better.
