After paying $15 from a meal without a drink I was severely disappointed to open my bag when I got home and see my fries were basically empty and my burger had one tiny piece a lettuce on it. I know what I said earlier about reviewing chain restaurants, I don't need you to remind me. Sometimes there's just exceptions to the rule. I wasn't sure if I wanted to steer my review more towards Five Guys generally, or this locations specifically. So it is what it is, figure it out. Anyway, I'm on MSU campus and in an area where there's several unique food options. My first Five Guys experience was many years ago and I love this place. My daughter and I decided this is the lunch for the day and we stop in. We each get a cheeseburger "all the way", share a regular size fry, and drinks. The bill came to roughly $25, and we grab our seats waiting to be called up for our order. We grab a paper bowl of shelled peanuts to munch and kill time. About 10 minutes later, we each have a burger in our hands that we aren't sure how to eat. The "all the way" burger has so many toppings it barely fits in your mouth. Read the menu for the details. Everything is clean, everything is fresh. The prices may be a little more than usual, but trust me, it's worth the experience. Being in business for over 30 years, and having over 1500 locations, I certainly can't speak for every place, every where, every time. What I can say, is I've never had a bad experience, bad service, or bad food ever at Five Guys. At any location. I'm sure there's that exception to the rule though. I 4 starred this place because it's great and I love it. I didn't 5 star it because it's a chain restaurant. It's my review, so I can do that. Make your own review if you don't like it. This place probably has the best cheeseburger and fries I've ever tasted in the area. They've never disappointed me in the slightest. I love the amount of fries they give you! They're a little bit on the pricey side but it's definitely worth it to me. Their burgers aren't too greasy and are cooked to perfection. Their fries are perfectly seasoned, and are exactly like those classic boardwalk french fries that they claim to sell. Not too bad. I don't know what it is but the Cajun fries are always so salty. I can never really finish them because of how salty they are. BUT, they do give you a ton of fries which is awesome. The burgers are good almost like the In N Out burgers...which I still prefer. Unfortunately, I live in Michigan now so this will be the closest I will get. Overall, good burgers that you can customize and I would just stick to regular fries. Good location and great workers. read more

Great hamburgers and excellent fries! Went here for lunch. Be forewarned. What I thought would be $12 to $15 meal turned out to be $20. Had a regular hamburger, "little" fry and small drink. Best...burger...EVAR! OK, well maybe not ever...it's not like they use artisan buns or gourmet toppings, but what more can I say? Burgers are enormous and delicious, and prices are reasonable. It's not the best food I can possibly imagine, but for the type of eatery it is, it doesn't get any better. They lose a star due to their hours. I'm probably being nit-picky, I know, but at 10 PM on a Friday night, I should be able to find a better place than a bar to sit down to a meal before a midnight movie showing. But I digress: I challenge you to find a better 50's-themed burger joint that is well-priced, clean, consistent, & delicious. Not gonna happen. A meal of a bacon double cheeseburger with everything ("All The Way", which is cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, onion, mayo, and probably some other stuff I'm too lazy to look up), regular fry, and small drink will only set you back a few more dollars than a comparable meal at Culver's or even Wendy's (it was about $12). But the food at Five Guys is way better than at those other places. Additionally, unless you specify a "small" burger with only one patty, it will automatically be a double burger & they give you a big cup of fries & then dump a bunch more into your bag, so portion sizes are VERY generous! They keep it simple: they only have a few items on their menu, but what they do, they do very well, and maybe most importantly, very consistently. I've been to this place around a dozen times & to the Ann Arbor location a few times & I have yet to have a bad experience. The fries are never burnt, it always tastes like they just changed the oil, and the Cajun seasoning on the spicy fries is never too heavy. The burgers are always cooked to perfection; juicy and delicious, never dried out. How many times have the overused oil and day-old patties at McDonald's, Wendy's or Burger King ruined a meal for me? More times than I care to admit. Pay the couple extra bucks & go to a place you'll be happy to tell your friends about. Simple as that. read more

Yeah.... this restaurant was definitely not for me. I don't understand the hype at all. My burger was a sloppy mess that fell apart in my hand. People told me that the burgers here were "HUGE" but they're actually smaller than a whopper from bk. The beef patty wasn't bad but was nothing special I prefer the smoked taste of a bk whopper patty. The cajun fries had waaaaay too much salt on them. But most of all ITS WAY OVERPRICED! There's something special about Five Guys; something that's somewhat hard to place. Perhaps it's the smell of it, greeting you from a block away. The smell of the kitchen, of the real, fresh meat sizzling away. The smell of fresh potatoes. It's downright warming on a cold autumn day. Perhaps it's the crisp look of the place, the sharp lined red and white interior. It's so simple yet so complex, the walls lined with articles and comments and even note cards written in crayon by some of the youngest fans of the food. Perhaps it's the fries. Oh, the fries, so many fries. Ordering fries is downright indulgent - it's one of my few criticisms that one cannot buy the quantity of fries that a healthy person should be eating on their own. By it's very nature Five Guys almost demands you bring along a friend. Back to the fries themselves. A single bite brings back memories of something, pushing onward you start to recognize it. These fries taste like...like...potatoes. Not fat, or oil, or fried bits, or processed starch, but potatoes. It's refreshing. The taste is as fresh as if you yourself pulled them from the dirt seconds before walking through the door. Perhaps it's the burgers. Most would probably say so. Like the fries, it's so simple and yet so complicated to sum them up. The statement "the burgers taste like meat" sounds like the musings of a Buddhist monk, but it is what it is. It is food at the edges of categorization, pushing labels back to their rightful places after years of careless wandering. Perhaps it's the toppings. Mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, relish, jalapenos, green peppers, A1 sauce, BBQ sauce, and hot sauce are all free. It's as tempting to make a burger piled high with a laundry list of your favorites as it is to go back time and time again to perfect the ultimate combination of flavors. So what's the catch, you ask? Portion size. That's all it really is - all other problems can really be traced back to portion size. Don't get me wrong, I like to eat. I can put down a good amount of food. If under pressure I'm sure I could eat a regular burger and a regular order of fries. I'd likely feel not so great when I finished, and I'd also be out almost $10. The little burger - which I would suspect is around a third pounder - is the perfect size. It feels like it should be the regular and the regular should be a double (which it is, literally). The regular fries are enough to feed two comfortably, and there is no smaller size. It plays out in the cost - even a little burger, a regular fries, and a drink will set you back just over $9. It may be as simple as this: bring friends. After hearing all kinds of great things about Five Guys from my cousin, we decided to give them a try while in EL. We didn't wait long to order, or to get our food, but then again, MSU was on a break, so maybe that slows down the traffic, I'm not sure. Don't be fooled - their regular Cheeseburger is a double, the small cheeseburger is a single pattie. The burger could only be described as messy and sloppily put together. Yeah, it's a $5 burger - but that's the burger only, slap fries and a drink and you're looking at $9. For a fast food place, that's a little much for a sloppy burger in East Lansing. It tasted good, but again nothing special. Fries were ok - but not as great as I had expected them to be. They were fresh made, skin on, but really nothing special. A step up from fast food burgers, but nothing to get excited about. The iceberg lettuce still reminds me of fast food joints, but the jalapenos really were popping! Love that you can add tons of free toppings to your burger, including green peppers! I ordered the little hamburger and left the place thinking "where's the beef"? I am a complete french fry snob and these fries just didn't cut it for me. They were a bit too greasy and didn't have that nice crisp crunch that I was seeking. I liked that they offered malt vinegar to drizzle on your fries and tons of ketchup too! The serving size of fries was too much for one person! Bring a friend and share them! I decided to wait for a second visit to our new Five Guys before reviewing. The quick and dirty is these folks make a pretty good burger and in my opinion it's worth the pretty penny you'll end up spending on it. The hubby and I first visited during their opening week and I was really excited to try them based on legend alone. The restaurant was brightly lit and very clean not to mention packed with happy, laughing college kids. The girl behind the counter asked if this was our first visit and beckoned us closer. She went to explain the burger sizes and that the regular fries were more than enough for both of us. She wasn't kidding either. While the burgers were fantastic, made with fresh ground beef and hand formed, juicy and cooked just right, the fries left me cold. They were under cooked and half seasoned and unfortunately for us, cold. Fast forward almost 2 weeks later and Five Guys have redeemed themselves. The fries were delicious! Fresh from the fryer, hot and crispy. And again more than enough for two people. I watched the guy fill the cup with fries then they throw in about a handful extra into your bag! How awesome is that? The employees here are rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful. I was literally yelled at, refused service, and harassed. They refused to have a civil discussion, resolve problems intelligently, or do the basics of their job. Too much ego. Imagine having ego as a fry cook. I don't ever never ever eat burgers at restaurants but this place is a must! I took a bite out of my husband's burger and almost ate the whole thing. It had really great flame broiled flavor and all the toppings are free. The beef is fresh with no fillers or preservatives (now they just have to work on the grass fed local beef ) and the fries are freshly cut and fried as you order them. Nice! I have had multiple bad experiences at this location. Every time I place an online order I always have to wait at least 10 minutes after my order time for the food even though I purposely arrive after the order time to ensure its ready. One time the staff was too busy talking to each other to notice I was even waiting for an online order and allowed my food to get cold. Why have online ordering if you cant even fulfill basic functions? Usually the food is still decent but this time they also screwed up my order in not only one but two ways, on top of poor service. I like the Five Guys franchise but hate this location. Also the guy who always is working the register is very rude and provides the worst service I've ever seen. Please get some quality management in here to turn this place around. read more

I dont think there is a time of day that I am not craving the food here. They do one thing here, burgers and fries, and they do it well. The burgers are built to order. The sky is the limit with the toppings and sauces. You can stack it with patties, cheese, and bacon to your hearts desire. If you are looking for a burger that wont be a small mess on your face, then you are not ready for this. This is the big leagues. Along with the burger, comes the fries. Regular or cajan depending on your taste, personally I go with cajan everytime. Not only do you get a container full of fries in the bag, but they take a second scoop once it's all bagged and dump more fries into the bag. It's bag fries galore. Once its ready grab some napkins and go to town. Always lots of seating and peanuts there to snack on while you wait. read more
