I had some friends over since I was staying in Newport Coast during the Memorial Day weekend holiday. I made reservations for our party and this was my friends first time dining at Lawry's sister restaurant. Founded in 1965. I haven't been here recently, but it hasn't changed a bit and is still a cozy and comfortable place to dine. We started off with a bottle of cabernet, complimentary bread, and two of their Pride of the Crowns salads. Since it was my friend's birthday I steered him into ordering the 16 oz Henry VIII Cut, cream corn, Cremini Mushrooms, Yorkshire pudding and spinach. I went with the same meal, and the prime rib was one of the best I've had in a long time. Tender and tasted great even when I pan fried my leftover prime rib. The ambiance was good, it felt very thematic and fun, and that's about where the complements stop. Our waiter was not very attentive, he seemed to be a bit overwhelmed, perhaps he was new. He forgot our order and I had to remind him several times to bring items clearly ordered. My drink was empty for a majority of my meal, and I had dirty dishes left around for far longer than is acceptable. Overall my husband's birthday dinner was fun because of our friends, but unfortunately we will not be going back to 5 crowns. It did not feel worth it at all. The food was only OK, our entrées came out luke warm, including the disappointing sides. The mash potatoes were flavorless, and the cream spinach was lack luster. The mac and cheese was piping hot, and delicious. I will also give credit to the server's assistant who helped him. I love a prime rib and the Lawry's location in LA and wanted to try the 5th location for my birthday now that we live in OC. We started with the crab cakes which were standard but not stand out. The star of the show is the prime rib which I ordered California cut for a smaller piece. I chose the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes with gravy for sides. We go to Five Crowns every summer when we are in town. Family tradition and so we are biased to love this place. Our experience last night was disappointing. The overall experience took way too long - over 2 hours - which was due to unusually long delays between courses. In addition, when the entrees finally arrived, elements of the dishes were either cold or undercooked with other elements on the plate served hot. Very inconsistent for such a high price point. Server was very nice but seemed a bit overwhelmed and spread thin between tables that were somewhat geographically distant from one another so in the end, couldn't tell whether the issues stemmed from kitchen, service, or both. read more

4 out of 5 stars Five Crowns is owned by Lawry's and is a solid English prime rib dining experience in Corona del Mar. If you've been to a Lawry's before, you know how this works. The biggest difference to note is that the spinning bowl salad that you typically get at Lawry's is NOT included with the standard prime rib offerings at Five Crowns. So if you want a salad, you have to order that separately. I typically order the bone-in cut, so I get the Henry VIII cut, which is the thickest cut with a bone. It is currently priced at $78 and you get to choose 2 sides: Lawry's creamed corn, Lawry's creamed spinach, or mashed potatoes. It comes with au jus and Yorkshire pudding. FYI: an option could be to wait until Restaurant Week to get the pre fixe menu. If you are in the Newport Beach area and craving a prime rib experience, this is the place to go. UPDATED: TWO WEEKS LATER I PHONED Ms. STONE. Left a voicemail, and no response. I called Laura Ratner, on her direct line, and no response, no response, no response. I really tried giving Lawry's an opportunity to redeem themselves, but the lack of urgency on this matter is beyond disappointing. First of all, my family and I have spent an obscene amount of money at Lawry's restaurants. We have referred business here. My best friend is having her wedding reception here next month, and I'm not looking forward to seeing the arrogant manager who had the nerve to correct me on hospitality terminology when praising the "food runner" Ivan who did more for us than the two servers assigned to us. Just accept the compliment and make things right, please. Y'all completely missed the mark on service and quality of food that evening. Be better. That said, My kid was PUKING for three days straight after dining here. The least they could do is apologize for the unfortunate situation and offer to make it better- would it kill them to call? Additionally, I had to go though my friend Todd Johnson, who no longer works for Lawry's to get some sort of contact with the company. I hope to hear from you soon, Laura Ratner. I visited Five Crowns during December and this is a MUST! The holiday spirit is alive! The cozy, English cottage decor already give you that "warming up by the fire" feel, so add a few garlands and live Christmas Carolers taking requests from each table and you are fully immersed in holiday magic! Yes, it's a steak house so it'll be pricey. Their prime rib is amazing. I got the smallest portion, Tokyo cut, and it was perfect for me. Our waiter, Zach, was great. Perfectly attentive and helpful with any questions or things we needed. We were here for a birthday and they brought out a complimentary cake slice with a candle. A very sweet touch. We come here yearly for the Christmas carolers. My daughter and her husband really enjoy it. We're late this year as we were all busy and finally got around to make reservations at the end of the holidays season. Unfortunately, we couldn't secure a spot for this past weekend. All time slots that would work for us were all booked up. We found a slot for tonight, Monday night, and it turned out to be better. Lesser people so more relaxing. Food was good. My daughter and her husband had their prime rib dinner and they always loved it. Hubby also ordered the same but requesting fat to be trimmed off so that was good, he said. I had the chicken Jidori and that was a great choice since I do not like prime rib (too fatty for me - just personal preference). The chicken was perfectly seasoned and juicy. Both my daughter and I had the chili as starters and that was excellent. Very good quality, lean prime beef in the chili. The meat was tender and there was no beans in the chili! My nephew was in town with his adorable wife who had never been to California. Their visit fell on their wedding anniversary. We wanted them to go somewhere amazing and we picked the perfect place! I contacted Carly a couple weeks before to ask how we Could make their dinner extra special. Carly arranged everything. We ordered two prime ribs and both were pure fat for the majority! See photos of the bone in Crown Cut. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she said that I should have asked for a lean cut. When you're paying $70 for a piece of meat, I always expect that as a member and a customer I would receive a decent edible cut of meat. I expect more from this restaurant. Our group was large enuf so we rented a private room for lunch (the restaurant is only open for dinner normally). They had a set menu with a couple of options for each course. I opted for the wedge salad, prime rib and cheesecake. First of all, the wedge hit the spot. It was full sized, and had a lot of bacon & blue cheese crumbles. Secondarily, the main was a good as the Bev Hills and Vegas locations. The meat was tender, nicely seasoned with just a hint of fat. WhereTF have I been for not hitting the location that is closest to HB until now. Lastly, there is always room for dessert. I enjoy a good cheesecake, and FC's version did not disappoint. It was creamy and went well with the strawberry and sauce. Shelley and her partner (I did not get her name), took excellent care of us. We had the place to ourselves, which worked out nicely. Alright we felt the need to try this place out since lawrys is one of our favorite restaurants ever, and it did not let us down. Classic prime rib, great sides (would totally come back just for those parm fries!), and friendly staff. We had a super dinner experience here! We made a reservation online on open table. We got here at 7:25, but waited about 10 minutes for a table. I asked if we could sit on the patio. It was absolutely perfect. We ordered the Prosecco and I split it with my husband. They were nice enough to split it for us at the bar, poured halves into coupe glasses. It was very kind gesture. I started with the salad - Pride of the Crowns. It was so delicious with butter lettuce, bacon, toasted walnut, grated Gruyère. The Herbs de Provenance dressing was so delicious! Then my lobster bisque came out. So good with some counts and chunks of lobster. Must order this! My husband was very happy with his prime rib. All the side dishes were perfectly executed. They had a special for $95 that included a soup or salad, lobster tail and prime rib with a couple sides. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and the lobster tail as well. The creamed spinach was pretty good although I may try a different side next time. The mashed with gravy was solid - and pouring some of the jou on top was a pro move...also gotta hit that prime rib with the horse radish spread. We haven't visited this restaurant since 2021, although we have been at the side door a couple of times in 2023 and all of those times my husband and I always had a wonderful experience and came out happy!!! So I decided to celebrate my birthday here. I have been raving about the New York strip I had last time, but tonight's experience was disappointing. The service and ambiance were okay, although a bit loud. The food, however, wasn't worth the trip. My bone-in New York strip was dry, and we requested it to be charred on all sides and medium rare. The waitress returned with the steak not charred, claiming that charring it would prevent it from being medium rare. We've dined at many restaurants, and they always managed to cook it charred and medium rare. We sent it back, and it was returned charred, but with a gas smell (I have a feeling they only used the fire gun because they were too lazy to do so) A glass of wine was brought to our table by mistake, and we were charged for it despite sending it back. (No apologies or whatsoever) If we were the type of people that would not check the bill thoroughly we would've paid for it instantly. The English trifle for my birthday was stale, and no apology was offered either instead the waitress came back and was full of reasons on how they just baked it the same day. We sent it back, she did ask if we wanted another dessert instead but I was already upset all I wanted to do was get up and go. We ordered a cappuccino, which was ordinary! (See my picture below) Considering the price, the quality was poor at this restaurant! We also have tried to talk to the manager because of the wine that we brought as they have charged us the first bottle and second bottle that costed more than the first bottle for corkage. Upon arriving the waitress have not mentioned anything about the corkage fee or anything second we have called to make a reservation and we have told them about the bottles that we will be bringing and told us that the first bottle is free and the second will have a corkage fee which was fine with us, (hence the two bottles upon arriving) all that the manager could say was ok and left and making it seem like we lied about it! She already didn't apologize for that extra fee that they have put in our bill and did not do anything about the corkage and expect us to return? No, thank you! Like we were the ones that should be thankful to even dine here! So rude! We won't be returning to this restaurant, which is unfortunate because it used to be good! I am starting to really believe at my own saying that if the bread is mediocre at a place expect the food is mediocre as well. Their bread was a Sourdough!!!! Spaghetti factory had a better bread than them. What really upsets me because it was birthday and it's really sad! I should've know better and chose something else! Lesson learned It seems like location and status are now the priority. I prefer dining at a nice restaurant where I'd pay the same price and receive better service. Charming british feel with good vibes. The ambiance is on the older side but the greenhouse/outdoor area is beautiful! Food is good but seemed less than what we paid for. I have tried to roast my own prime rib at home and never been successful at replicating the flavor the tenderness and the temperature at Five Crowns. I think only Lawry's in Beverly Hills comes as a close second. I know that's blasphemy, but I really do prefer Five Crowns. Five Crowns has almost all of the Lawry's experience, but not completely. Wonderful service, the waiter was constantly checking up on us, and not in a pushy way. Just super friendly and helpful. The prime rib was just as good as Lawry's in LA too. The meat was cooked perfectly, the au jus was savory and the creamed corn was creamy and lightly sweet. A big miss was, however, the salad. The Lawry's salad is so amazing the it was definitely missed, as well as the baked potato. We ended with the souffle and it was nice and light, but don't miss the ice cream.. it's a must. My husband being from the Bay Area is a big fan of House of Prime Rib so we had to check out Five Crowns when we moved down to Orange County. We made a reservation and were sat immediately in the main room. We loved how friendly our server was and he even said he'd try bringing our food out faster since we had our infant with us. I decided to take my girlfriend to a nice dinner for a special night here on July 30th, and was very excited to enjoy such a nice night at a high quality steakhouse. The service was overall good, our server was great and so were the welcoming hostess' and valet. Our problems began once our food came to our table. We had ordered the New York Strip done Medium, and the Filet Mignon Medium Rare, both done to what had to be the equivalent of rare, I love a good rare cut of meat but it was not the one I desired at this time. We also ordered a side of truffle fries, macaroni cheese, and mushrooms. Our sides came out and were fairly dry and not freshly done by any means, they had to have been sitting under heat lamps because they were dry and not warm in the inside at this point. On top of the not so warm sides, we were brought asparagus, now I love asparagus so I had no issue other than that I had specifically wanted the mushrooms. Once I told our waiter this they apologized and brought us, as well, not so warm mushrooms. Pushing through our experience we still had a great time with eachother and decided to head out after paying the bill. Our bill arrives and I see we've been charged with the asparagus that was accidentally and wrongfully brought to our table. I couldn't find the server for some time and decided to leave and salvage what was left of our night. Overall 4/10 experience with great hospitality from the staff and ambiance was okay, but the food did unfortunately disappoint especially for a $220 bill not including tip. read more

We decided to try the other items on the menu, since we always order the prime rib. I like how you can order items from the side door menu. I would highly recommend the korean style duck wings. They were really juicy and full of flavor. The service has always been really consistent and never ceases to disappoint. Even though the other items are great, I would recommend just sticking with the prime rib. It's what they're known for. We went during OC Restaurant Week, and it was everything we hoped for. The vibe is charming--picture a British manor with beautiful greenhouse attached to it. We kicked things off with ahi tuna and clam chowder that actually had clams in it--yes, shells and all. You could practically hear the ocean with every bite. But let's talk about the California cut prime rib--wow. I ate half because I was genuinely worried I'd finish it too quickly and miss the joy of every single bite. Five Crowns is a Scottish restaurant located in an area where you wouldn't think it'd quite match the neighborhood. Fitting more into the themed design of their sister restaurant, Tam O' Shanter, than Lawry's the atmosphere takes you to another country and another world. The design is less colorful than the Tam but still holds the influence of Scotland on their walls. You can see tartans, coat of arms, and a pub like feel everywhere. Old world design is integrated from the walls to the booths. The service is very welcoming, with each server having a warm and gentle aura. There was a genuine kindness to the words our server spoke and we were happy to have her on a dinner we were celebrating a birthday. She was the example of excellent service that elevated the dinner service and we happily left a generous tip to show our gratitude. But how is the food? After all, any restaurant affiliated with Lawry's should be known for quality when it comes to steaks and prime rib and Five Crowns is no exception. Having pretty much the same menu as those restaurants you can't go wrong with the prime rib. In fact, unless you are getting steak this should be your de facto order. Cut and cooked the way you want it, all prime ribs are served with a Yorkshire pudding and your choice of either creamed corn, creamed spinach, or mashed potatoes. I recommend asking for extra au jus and gravy to help smothering all bites. The prime rib is done like it's been mastered for decades. Pretty hard to find flaws and if you want to be decadent, you can always add extra items like the lobster tail. When it comes to appetizers we tried a few. The beef carpaccio was exquisite. A clean, rich flavor it was presented beautifully and has flavors that showcase how well this restaurant understands beef. The fried calamari was crispy and not too heavily fried, served with a creamy sauce on the side that goes well with anything. The crab cake is chonky and filled with crab meat. Very little filler to create this tasty morsel of the sea, it is fresh and easy to come back to over and over. For the dessert, we ordered the dark chocolate soufflé. I love a place that serves soufflés as they are difficult to make so not many places make them. Deep in flavors, the cream served on the side made the tastes smooth but decadent. One order is enough to share between three people unless you don't want to share. Than perhaps two instead. Coming down to Five Crowns felt very much like eating at the Tam O' Shanter but with a seaside flair. It felt familiar and comfortable and the food was the same. For special occasions Five Crowns checks all the boxes and makes you feel posh. I recommend for those looking for something unique in south OC to try. read more

In England this would be called a gastro-pub and here it is a steak house. - Our mistake but ... we were here so decided to stay and, hopefully, enjoy a great meal ... The service was excellent - attentive without being intrusive and they were so nice when we asked if we could move somewhere away from the noisy party behind us. Sadly the food didn't match up. My wife's filet was good but not memorable and my New York strip would have been OK in a diner or even a low to mid-priced restaurant. But for $68 my 45 day aged strip was tasteless and a little tough. The mushrooms were the highlight of the night and are to die for. The brussels, on the other hand, were terrible - charred to within an inch of their life on the outside and so acidic in the inside I figured they had to be pickled. We finished with a chocolate soufflé which was good but, sadly, not great. With better food this could have been exceptional but sadly it fell a long way short - particularly considering the price. read more

Family and I went on a Saturday night, early dinner with reservations. Apparently this is the place to celebrate birthdays. Literally every table including ours was a birthday table haha Drinks - The lotus drink was a bit too sweet for my liking. I ended up with a glass of red for my second drink. They were really pushing Caymus so i went for it. I am not too fond of prime rib so I went with the petite filet mignon. It was a bit too oiled and garlicky for my liking. I would probably get something else next time. I think the best part was the caesar salad tbh... We found street parking but there is a lot across the street dedicated for the restaurant. read more

This restaurant is legendary, but it was 20+ years since we were there. The other couple has been there dozens of times but not for a few years. I was disappointed as were others with prime rib. Not as thick as before. I had English cut with is 3 thin slices and each of mine were not that different from the regular cut. The taste was good. My wife and I had 2 sides. Spinach was good and the mash potatoes were not creamy, not very hot and just not good. You pay a lot of money and the value isn't there. Service was fair. Very formal but they didn't fill waters until we finally tracked down our guy. There were empty glasses later and not filled Inside is interesting. Parking was $10 at their parking lot. My rating of a 2 is because of the cost. It should be better. read more

Service is excellent! Food is delicious and we enjoyed the dining room ambiance of dark wood paneled walls and torch lamps. I had the 4oz lobster add on to my husband's center cut prime rib. The French onion soup is one of the best. A very nice evening overall. read more
