We used the moving company from a move from Northampton to Enfield(CT). On the morning of the move the movers showed up on time and were extremely nice and proficient in packing and moving. The actually movers did a great job and were extremely hard working. My issue was with the management. They came out and conducted an estimate and our final bill ended up being almost double the estimated quote, they quoted us for 4.5 hours and our final bill was for 7.5 hours. We went with the company based on price as we did look into other companies but at the end the price was on par with others main well known moving companies (eg. United) ) without offering comparable benefits like insurance, they only offer basic coverage for your move . I also asked several times how close to the estimate do you think it will be because we were literally all packed up only major lifting they had to do was take apart the bed and couch, the owner ensured me of the price. The price was not the same at all. They factor in the time to drive to your home from the warehouse and from your home to the warehouse at their hourly rate which really hikes the price. Also they offer to help you with packing things but then charge you for supplies on the back end such as tape if you use them. I would recommend them if you are doing a quick short distance move as they did a good job but really price out the distance and time for travel into your cost, we ended up paying over an hour just in travel time for the truck to get to us and back. read more

Follow up on previous review: owner immediately reached out to not only resolve my outstanding claims, but to offer apology and explain their intention for better processing operations for their future customers. He did not ask me to update this review, but future customers should be aware that the company did take immediate remediation action. DO NOT USE. Movers themselves were great young men. Professional, respectful, and strong. That's all you need out of them. The management team should NEVER be allowed to operate a business. They are a month delinquent on responding to my damage claims that the MOVER insisted I file, after he accidentally damaged multiple planks of my hardwood floors. I have called 6+ times looking for resolution. Not for hundreds of dollars. Just resolution. On the most recent call over a week ago, Phil told me "I don't like hearing from you as much as you don't like having to follow up" and to "temper my expectations". Essentially, leave us alone. I was then told I need to send an email asking for a follow up, because calling wasn't sufficient. Was told I would hear back by the end of the week. That was a while ago. I gave 2 ratings because the movers were very pleasant and seemed to want to do a good job After a full day, local move (17 minutes from house to house) at $4100.00 - I was asked if Id like to include a 20% tip. I did tip but nowhere near 20%. List of damages: Old house- Broken door - 6 in gouge in living room wall - 9-12 inch scrape in office woodwork - cost to me $750 back to owners to fix the damages New house - Broke the arm on new sofa - damaged sliding glass door - threw items on top of each other in storage unit. They initiated damage reports for some of this. lots More detail but not sure how it adds value, 5 weeks post move I spoke to Patrick after leaving voice mail and email. He reached out to resolve. We started off nicely when he started swearing at me and told me to "do better". After nicely putting Patrick in his place, he admitted he should not have said that to me. He handled the rest of the conversation poorly, at which point I told him I wanted nothing, it wasn't worth spending more time on, I just knew who I would Not be using in the future. Patrick assure me that these converstations don't happen often, the majority of 62 reviews tell me otherwise. What I learned: 1. Moving is expensive 2. Buy the insurance 3. Do not deal with Five College 4. Their movers were great to be around 5. Their management is highly unprofessional l 6. They are not "stress free" - due to their managers. Read the fine print on your contracts! They protect themselves but not you. We had a job of moving things out of a POD and into the house. And moving some furniture out of a bedroom upstairs and out to the garage. Not a big operation. UNTIL the moving team moved the dresser with a glass top down the stairs. They didn't take the glass top off and it slid off hit the walls, the bannister And crashed on the tile floors. They took an accident report and then I sent them the invoices to repair the damages. Oops they sent me an email back citing a clause in the contract that they only pay $50 and the rest I need to use my insurance to cover. The job was around 600. And the repairs cost more than that. The company WAS NOT going to budge. I have to pay for them. What was a little job turned into a nightmare. This company does not stand by their work and did not take responsibility for their mistakes. They messed up and I had to cover their mistakes and they show no remorse or restitution for it. Beware of this guy Patrick. He's good to deal with when you hire the company but doesn't honor the contract especially if you want to submit a claim due to destruction of furniture. He doesn't take my calls, doesn't return my calls. Kyle and Jakob destroyed my furniture. I called Patrick to let him know what his boys did and when I noticed that they automatically put the tip in the bill I told him I wanted that tip back. That was $81.00 They go ahead and include a 10% tip on top of the bill so be very careful what your signing. Now he doesn't want to return any of my phone calls. Five college movers quoted me one price, and I told them exactly what we had to move! When it was all finished and done We are exhausted and we had no idea that they charged us exactly double following the contract that they agree to... It seems to be a trick of theirs. We moved out of a mobile home with a small shed, and a very small storage unit... the owner was told in all honesty exactly what they would have to move to the next town over... 5 miles away. They quoted us for the whole move in the for $3600 of which we had to pay them $139.00 (weird amount & non-refundable) When all was said and done, Everything was all over the place even though every box was clearly labeled for the exact room it was to be put into! When you see a box that the 'professional movers' labeled "Closset"!.. you know you've picked the Wrong Movers! We found out much later that everything that was labeled for each room ended up in our garage! Four months later, we are still looking for our printer and so many other items that belong inside the house! My wife and I recently contracted with Five College Movers of Northampton MA to pack up our furniture at our condo in Amherst, MA and bring it to a storage container in Northampton, MA. The three gentlemen who packed our furniture were outstanding and took great care with our belongings. The took their time, took apart the larger pieces of furniture, wrapped everything and brought everything downstairs to the truck. At the end of the day, the team leader gave me a bill for $940.00 which was for 3 men and truck for 4 hours, plus supplies less discount and deposit. The next day they unloaded the truck into the storage container which should not have have taken more than 2 hours because all they had to do was back the truck up to the container and unload. No problem until I receive a bill for $1826.64. Come to find out I was charged for 4 hours to unload. I called numerous times and even went to the office three times to get an explanation and was told that was what I had to pay. I could never get a straight answer or a detailed, itemized invoice until I went to my lawyer and he made a call. The man I dealt with was argumentative, rude and would yell and even dropped the "F" bomb a couple of times. When I told him I was going to complain to management about him he said he was the owner. DO NOT USE!!! There was some damage caused by the move. A new couch was scraped in two location exposing the wood frame and a hardwood floor was scratched in two locations. The total cost to repair the floor and replace the couch was just over $2,400, which I had to pay out of pocket. I filed a damage claim with Five College Movers and was ignored for over 6 weeks. It took repeated calls and emails in order to get a response. Ultimately, I started calling them using *67, as that was the only way they would answer my calls. The owner, Patrick MacWilliams, could not have been more rude and even hung up on me! I was shocked at how poor their customer service is. In the end, they gave me $300. Last summer, I contacted Five College Movers to get an estimate for my upcoming move which was to move, quite literally, down the street. My new residence is 413 feet from my old home, it's not like I was moving between cities - this was a pretty small operation. I wanted to hire movers to avoid the hassle of maneuvering couches and larger furniture items around, and preferred to leave it to professionals. They were happy to oblige, sending over an estimate of SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS for less than 2 hours of work. Given the very short distance, and the fact that there were only a handful of large items to move - that seemed insane to me. I responded, thanking them for their time but advised I would not be utilizing their service. Move day arrives - By this point, I had reached out to another moving service that was far more accommodating and much less pricey than FCM. When I came outside to greet the movers, low and behold - FCM is here in addition to D's Home & Move (Who are fantastic, btw) whom I had actually hired to assist with the move. The young men that FCM sent were all very nice and understanding, so I want to be clear that my issue is not with the quality of move or the employees I met - It's moreso with the management. I never signed the contract sent by FCM, plus I emailed back advising I would NOT be using them due to the far too expensive estimate. All the manager needed to do was reference their files and see that this was a mistake that these young men were sent out to my house, recognize it was just some clerical error on their end, and have it be over and done. Instead, he shouted and screamed at my boyfriend and myself, screaming about how he would see us 'in f**king court!' among other really aggressive, rude exclamations. After experiencing a nightmare move with a different company who left behind a full truckload as well being horribly lazy and slow (taking many phone and cigarette breaks plus standing shirtless in front of my ac!) The next day was a Saturday and I was forced to hire another co. The very next day for a full move even though it was a short distance locally. A 45 min move ended up costing me over 3k. FCM was the answer to my prayers. The guys were so sweet, professional and hard working. They even moved all the boxes to my basement storage room that the other movers stuffed into my garage all Willy Nilly. They would have even packed for me- what! I wish I would have ignored the yelp stars and hired these guys to begin with. The other movers had a very high rating Possibly there are different movers hired at any given time. Really bad experience with these guys. On the day of the move, they sent three guys, one of which was so inexperienced he had no idea how to move a washing machine and dropped it. I filed a claim for it and a broken chair and that's where things got quite unpleasant. I tried to get clarification from the "owner" who got an attitude with me. They also broke one of our four dining room chairs. When I sent photos through the claims process, he asked for more. Then he asked for more. And more. Even though the photos were clearly showing damage to our items. They do not stand by their work and are a two bit operation. There are plenty of other movers in the pioneer valley, use them instead. We used these guys to move from Amherst to Northampton. They came recommended by our new landlord, who had used them herself to move out of our new unit. We arranged the move in advance, and were able to take advantage of an expired coupon deal they were kind enough to honor. On the day they did arrive with an truck rather too large for our needs, and I was concerned we'd have issues with the parking at the back of the apartment block - a little surprised by this, given they'd dealt with our building and it's limitations before. Ultimately that didn't pose a problem and the crew moved in pretty efficiently, with all the usual (at least for my experience) service - mats put down on floor, taking apart and re-assembling furniture, positioning in the apartment etc. The crew was friendly and considerate, nothing damaged and the service was good all round. read more

I used this company to move to Amherst 3 years ago and then again last week to move out of Amherst. These college-aged guys had no problem with the move in (unloading a UHaul for a 1 bedroom). I was kind of worried about them loading the truck since loading a truck is more difficult. There was no reason for me to be worried. They called the day before to confirm the move (and offered to buy me coffee on the way because they were stopping for themselves, adorable!), arrived on time, and finished the move in just under 2 hours. The guys were nice and nothing was damaged. They wrapped all my furniture carefully with the moving blankets I had purchased from UHaul. They brought their own plastic wrap to secure the moving blankets around the furniture. I was very impressed. They also covered up a doorjam with blankets to avoid damaging the entryway. I've used Five College Movers 3 times. They've always been top notch. Unfortunately, this time, the completely missed the mark! They damaged two items during my move. And also ripped a box open, said they got everything in the box recovered, only for me to discover during unpacking that they did not. Some very expensive items were missing. In trying to recover damages from them, they got defensive, attitudinal, and when I got upset and yelled and swore, the owner said "F&*# YOU" and hung up on me. Not very professional dude. One of the items we didn't even notice until weeks later, however, there is no way on this earth they didn't know they broke it when they did. Since there was no other way to move that buffet they had to have also experienced that and didn't say a word to us! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They moved my stuff two years ago into a storage unit they subcontract from another local company. I paid for a 10x10 unit that was, ostensibly, mine alone. In May of this year, I went to check on my stuff, only to discover that someone else's stuff was in there. It was full to the brim and made it so that I couldn't access my stuff at all. (The accompanying photo shows only the other person's stuff; my stuff is crammed into the back so that you can barely see it.) Pat, the owner of the company, acted like I was crazy for thinking anything was wrong; he never apologized and barely offered an explanation, and even hung up on me and, when I finally got him on the phone again, asked me if I was "ready to be polite." When I got a lawyer involved, he finally agreed to move the other person's stuff. The movers left broken glass all over the floor of my unit, and, according to someone who works at the storage facility, left it without a lock for three days, only finally locking it at his insistence. They also changed the locks several times without giving me the combinations, and avoided my calls so that I had to call from different numbers to get through. I ended up paying $150 for a bed-bug-sniffing dog to check my stuff to make sure nothing had transferred from this other person's stuff. I don't know how often this other person went into the unit and had access to my stuff. They could easily have taken items; luckily, I don't think they did. I almost didn't hire Five College Movers because of the prior review - however, I took a chance and called them. Pat went out of his way to make sure I was comfortable, even providing connection to Angie's List where they have great reviews AND providing me with references that I could call. Their price beat out just about everyone else in the area, except for one company who also had good reviews but refused to provide me with customer references I could call. We had a couple of little snafus, but in general this move was quite painless and the two guys who showed up did an excellent job!! They worked hard and fast and the time the job took was right on target with the estimate. I only ended up paying more because of traffic which of course is no one's fault - just my bad luck. I commend them for good communication both prior to and during the move. They also had a right sized truck, all the moving materials they said they would provide accessible, and best of all they had a great attitude. When an owner of a company doesn't take responsibility for a company mistake, like failing to pass on vital info to his work crew, and when that results in a longer, more costly move, I'm quite turned off; but when you add to that the experience of having this owner scream obscenities at you as you try to resolve the issue, it's important to let others know. AWFUL EXPERIENCE DO NOT BOOK. This company told me all I had to do was put down a $39 deposit and $100 holding fee for their services on 9/1. I booked them the first week of August and they cancelled on me 10 days before my move because I did not sign a contract that they never sent me. When they told me they cancelled my reservation they already notified me that there was no more availability on the day of my move and asked for another day when I had explicitly explained the importance of my move as early as possible on 9/1. They "say" that they tell everyone they will send over the contract but they did not tell me and now I have a week until I move with no movers because it's the busiest moving day of the year in Boston. Extremely unhappy with their service. Loved the ease of setup for an estimate, they had a facetime walk through, thought that was a great use of technology. After the walk through they said they would have a quote in 30 minutes, didn't see anything. Ok this was a Saturday, no big deal. Needed these folks as a last minute move due to COVID! They were professional and did a great job moving my stuff from a pretty tough fourth floor old Boston North End apartment. I can't give them 5 stars because the quoting and billing were misleading. Ended up paying much more than we expected. So I guess I would say, good movers but make sure you get the facts on cost straight before the move. My two roommates and I used Five College Movers for a Northampton to Amherst move for a 3 bedroom house. I was very happy with the two movers they sent for the job as they were polite, professional and efficient. I was unhappy with management and the service provided because the truck was not able to be pulled (or backed) into the driveway in Amherst to unload. A simple google map street view search of the property addresses prior to booking the job and subsequent usage of a different truck would have avoided this issue entirely. Management of this company took no responsibility for this error and lack of providing an appropriate vehicle for this move that resulted in the truck having to be parked in the neighbor's driveway to be unloaded (thankfully the neighbors agreed to this, otherwise we would have had to pay significantly more for this move job based on the expensive alternative options provided) and 5 (yes, 5) additional people helping to move items from the truck to the house, which was quite a distance away. If we had not had this many extra people helping, the distance from the neighbors driveway to the house to unload would have resulted in at least 3 additional hours of labor for the job, probably more as I believe this is a conservative estimate. Of course, we did not want to pay for additional time, as this was not our fault, it was the fault of the company for not providing the appropriate equipment for the job. We were charged for 4 3/4 hours for two movers at $155 per hour plus $35 for tape and a $35 booking fee. If 5 additional people had not helped unload the truck it would have been significantly more. I can't imagine if this would have happened to an elderly couple or anyone who isn't physically able to carry heavy furniture or boxes long distances. I asked management to refund some of the charge due to the circumstances and error on their part and the fact that 5 additional people (two with prior back injuries) needed to help to keep the move on schedule and not pay for additional hours and they took no responsibility for this error and refused to refund any of the money. They very much want you to book and don't see it as their responsibility to prepare appropriately for the job or inquire with the customer about any of the important logistics, such as driveway access. Even a small gesture of a $50 refund would have gone a long way and probably avoided me writing this negative review. I do not recommend this company - there are better folks to do business with in the Valley. I am moving again soon out of the area and will not be using Five College Movers nor will I ever recommend this company to anyone I know. I'm surprised that this day in age a company would prefer to keep a minimal amount like $50 rather than refund a portion and admit they made a mistake to avoid negative feedback like this. We used Five College Movers to move from one house to another on the same street. They sent (3) young men who were extremely prompt, polite, and careful with all of our belongings. They were patient when we made them go back for items we forgot from the original house. They set up our beds and even pointed out some issues with a rug we were moving. I would definitely recommend them, but I did not really shop around and I probably should have. Since they were only moving items from a few houses down the road, we probably should have gone with a mover that does not charge from the warehouse to the location. This really added to our bill. First-time hiring movers, and we had a good experience with FCM. Pat came to do a walk-through estimate. He gave us good communication about what to expect, and the estimate ended up being very close to our final charge. He estimated 5 hours with a 3-person crew, and the final charge was for 5.5 hours, but I'm pretty sure that's because we weren't completely done packing when the crew arrived. It would have been faster if all our stuff had already been boxed up. The crew was nice and careful and efficient. We were moving out of our house, and while I knew we had a ton of stuff, I was unsure about hiring a mover. I've heard horror stories about movers who get all of your stuff in the truck, then gouge you for more money to get your items back. I saw Five College Movers advertising on Craigslist, and even though AT THE TIME they seemed expensive, I decided to give them a call. They were worth every. single. penny. They arrived on time and got right to work. They carefully wrapped all of our heavy furniture in blankets and shrink wrap, diasassembling items when necessary to get it to fit in the truck. They had to deal with lots of stairs, but didn't bang any walls or damage any furniture. They were incredibly polite and courteous for the entire 5 hours they worked. And they WORKED. No standing around, no pretending to be doing something. They both worked hard the entire time, It was incredibly hot and humid on our moving day, and every time I'd apologize for not having air conditioning, they'd smile and say it was OK. I can't recommend them highly enough, and I would use them again in a second. read more

I'm so glad we went with Five College Movers! Their motto is "Stress-Free Moving" and it couldn't be more accurate. The ability to do an estimate over FaceTime was so convenient. They came to our old place early and had the truck packed up within the first hour. 2 hours later, everything was moved into our new place. They made sure that the furniture was wrapped up to avoid ripping the fabric. They even went the extra mile and carried our couch up 4 flights of stairs when it wouldn't fit in the elevator.
