Movers are not cheap. So if you are not willing/able to pay a pretty penny, don't do it. But five college moved my stuff so fast and efficiently. I just stood there watching them pack all my stuff up and gaped at how fast it all went. Juan did a great job. Even dealt with a difficult couch. So know it wont be cheap. The two young movers did an excellent job, but the lead one called me at the end of the move, had me give him my credit card number again (even though the office had it) and suggested a 20% tip of $260 dollars, which shocked me. Moving can be emotional and I felt caught off guard. I feel this is a poor way to go about suggesting a tip. I was not told this would be the procedure by the office staff with whom I made all the arrangements. read more

It was hidden in my basement and covered with a blanket. I discovered it while the movers were still there. After a filed a suit in small claims court for $7150.00 I was offered $ 500 for damages to my furniture and home. I hope I receive a fair reimbursement. I wish I could leave no stars. The hidden fees are ridiculous. Give an honest quote. It isn't like you provide top-notch service; you pick things up and put them down.

For me the issue was the extra fees they added on after the move. Credit card fees, environmental fees and the reservation fee. When I questioned them, they said that they told me about it. They had not. Luckily, I did pay with a credit card and went through my bank to dispute these extra charges. It took a bit, but I was refunded. read more

The young men who were our project movers were outstanding. They were careful, considerate, and worked exceptionally hard to manage the complex job. The move entailed moving items from an attic to a garage. Many of the items were old, antique and the attic stairs were treacherous. In addition, they moved a display case from a barn to a second floor location. I would rehire this company again without question. They are professional, thoughtful, and thoroug. read more

The people who did the move were very nice, but I thought it was gonna be seven hundred and fifty dollars minus one fifty, which I lost the forty nine dollars to some kind of up processing fee for my application for them. There were 7 charges. I was not told about and I would never ever recommend them again. Unfortunately, the guys that did it were very nice, but I paid almost $1200. We have moved several times -- including from the Midwest to New England, then to the West Coast, then back to New England, and within New England a couple of times. We have never had an experience like with Five College Movers -- and not in a good way. For starters, they only offered a virtual estimate, so I tried to show them everything and be as specific as possible. We even left some things for the new owners of the house that we had originally planned to take and didn't add anything significant. However, at some point on moving day, they decided that there wasn't enough room in the truck they sent, so they said they would need a second truck and crew to finish the job. What could we do at that point? So of course that meant a second truck and crew for delivery day as well -- meaning the move cost us significantly more than originally quoted. I had also inquired if we needed to empty the dressers since previous movers had indicated that dressers could be left with clothing or linens in them, and the FCM representative stated that we could leave them with the clothing and such in them. However, for some unknown reason, the movers removed the drawers and wrapped them separately (perhaps being part of why a second truck/crew was needed), but this dresser did NOT have drawers designed to be removed. There were small ball bearings in the slides on the sides of the drawers, and by pulling the drawers out, they rendered them useless. The same style of drawers are in the foot of the bed, and it took 3 members of the crew over 30 minutes to try to get them back in place. We finally told them just to leave. We finally were able to get those drawers back in place, but it took a lot of effort. The dresser drawers were a lost cost, so we basically have a $900 piece of junk sitting in our basement storage area. This was definitely the worst moving experience we have ever had. The movers themselves were all pleasant to work with, but I wouldn't say they were overly careful with our items. Other movers were definitely more careful. Five College Movers invoiced at least $2000 or more than we expected, then we had to replace the broken dresser. I would NEVER go with Five College Movers again, and I will definitely inform anyone who is moving and looking for a moving company to go elsewhere. read more

We received a quote via a face time walk around of our home. They gave a very competitive quote so we hired them. They arrived on time on the day of the move and all was going great. At some point during the move, they added a second truck and a second crew of guys. They never consulted us prior to doing so either. My husband and I were extremely stressed out and overwhelmed on moving day and I feel they took advantage of that. Once all was said and done, we ended up paying 2x what our original quote was. We then began noticing that some of the furniture was broken and a bunch of my husband's tools are missing. The most unprofessional experience of my life. I completed a virtual estimate and was told $2800 total for two daysi. I understood this was an estimate and not the final amount. I understood the total could be a bit more. well- it came to $6100. that's not a bit more. I feel like I was told one thing just so I would accept the service only to be charged something drastically different. when I expressed how upset I was, using totally appropriate language, the owner accused me of being berating and belittling and informed me that I I continued to press the matter, he would make sure it would end very poorly for me and my family. When I reiterated that not once have I berated or belittled anyone but that I do believe this is completely unfair and that I was lied to by a company that is lacking integrity, he hung up on me and proceeded to put in writing that he warned me to stop being verbally abusive but that I didn't listen. so if I continued, he would be contacting authorities. he accused me and my husband of neglecting our children and needing reminders to supervise them when they would "get in the way." this never happened. he also claimed I didn't tell him about the boxing that needed to be done in my garage or the backyard playground equipment. However, he saw inside my house abd in my backyard. these were part of the original quote. Many more insulting things that were inaccurate and it my family were shared as "notes from the movers about what a chaotic and disorganized job this was." Hismovers wore head phones, sometimes didn't communicate with us when we talked straight to them, packed up houseplants inside boxes so that now all our houseplants are dead, UNPACKED drawers and put those items into boxes and charged us for the extra time and materials it took to do so, packed my husbands tools in their truck while he was packing up things that were pointed to the walls like curtains rods, so that he couldn't finish what he was doing and we were FORCED to ask them to do extra tasks. Then claimed they would take $400 off the invoice as an apology and never did. After threatening me and my family and falsely claiming I had threatened them. Oh- and on the second day, my daughter actually did get in the way at one point (after the original false claim she did which was inaccurate) and when I told her to move but she didn't right away because she's a kid, the mover knocked her over on purpose and then rudely said "excuse me" to her. Injuring a child? REALLY?! I wish I had checked yelp instead of google because they have a 4.9 star review over there. We changed some details 2 or 3 times, and Bobby had no problem accommodating our requests. The crew of 3 arrived on time and were amazing. We were packed in 3 hours. The 5 hour trip was exactly on time, and all of our requests were handled with care. The estimate was almost exactly the figure originally quoted...no surprises, just smiles. If I could leave zero stars, I would. They estimated a job that included three items over 400 lbs going up one and two sets of stairs. They saw the items and the stairs. They sent four men with a three hour minimum requirement. At the end of their three hours, they refused to move the heavy items, siting safety issues--yet they had seen the job and agreed to do it prior. I had to hire another company that required another minimum of hours when it only took another 1.5 hours to finish. There was no apology for leaving my job early, and no offer to cover the cost of another company's minimum that I wouldn't need, just "we're done here." Then I discovered that they charged me $180 for moving supplies...I used (3) boxes that they told me were $20 a piece, and a tiny bit of tape. They charged a hidden CC fee that was undisclosed when I signed the estimate. They charged for an additional half hour that could not have possibly been used for travel, and certainly was not used for labor. Additionally, they did not honor the 10% discount they gave me during the estimate. Side note: the team leader on the move tried to get me to sign a waiver releasing them from any liability due to damages they might cause, saying he need me to sign it before they could get started. It's a waiver for individual pieces of furniture, but he repeatedly wanted me to sign the blank form. When trying to resolve these issues with Patrick, he never once listened to my side of the story. He repeatedly launched into aggressive dismissive language, and repeatedly accused me of harassing his company. Trying to get a resolution and leaving reviews is not harassment. He doesn't seem to realize he's running a public business. I felt harassed by HIM. I also strongly feel that this entire company is misogynistic. I'm looking forward to finally having my story heard before a judge in small claims. Incidentally, when I told the court against whom I was filing, they responded "Five College Movers? I had a fridge moved in the beginning of May 2023, they needed to move the old one out and bring the new one in, I was quoted on the phone that it would be a deposit of $139 and that it would go towards the total cost, which was quoted at $200/hr. When the contract came to sign, it was listed as a 3 hour minimum, in a very hard to find place on the contract. They were not honest on the phone. Then they said they could change it later, but never did. They moved the fridge and left a 4in gouge on the front door and had me fill out a damage claim. I haven't heard anything back from them regarding it even though I was told 2 weeks. I also was double charged my deposit in the final bill which also charged me for the 3hr minimum of $600 just to move a fridge in 45min. I have called and left messages several times and they do not respond. Do not use them if you don't want to be overcharged, have your items damaged, and not called back. read more

Five College Movers did an excellent job with my June 2024 move from Northampton to Amherst. Casey was fantastic at communication before the move, staying in touch and allaying my concerns. On the day of the move they wanted to make an adjustment to the crew size based on their own schedule changes. However they honored the contract, and I was super grateful for that. The moving crew was competent, fast, and polite, despite it being in the middle of one of our many heatwaves this summer and our move being the first of two moves they were doing that day. In order to keep the cost down, they wrapped valuable furniture carefully but didn't worry about wrapping the pieces that we all acknowledged were not worth the effort. Despite this, there was no damage. I appreciated them following up the next day to make sure everything had gone well. Worst moving experience ever. Initially had good communication which swayed me to go with this company vs. another in the area. Bad decision: Holes in walls which had to be patched and wall repainted; damaged woodwork; broken dresser handle; broken antique furniture leg (the only damage pointed out by the team); damaged veneer; etc. No response to damage claims which included photos. Moving is a tough job - and the guys were friendly and courteous - but more care is needed to build a good reputation. read more

I contracted these guys to love two vending machines from a school. I called them when I arrived at 1:30PM and told them I was here early and please contact me if they are running early or late. My appointment was at 3PM. At 415PM the school told me they couldn't wait any longer and had to lock the doors. No call no show. I continue to call and at 4:55 PM the owner, Patrick answered. Told me I was being an asshole. They fucked up and what do you want me to do about it. Then stated that I could go fuck myself you fucking loser. I would not recommend them for their lack of professionalism, lack of respect of at least a call to let us know they were running late or weren't going to make it. Biggest disappointment, owner telling us not to "waste his time", after daughter submitted claim and requested photos only to never hear back. Such a waste of HER time. Like so many others who have posted reviews, I found that the movers were excellent, and fit all my possessions into a small storage unit. Very professional. The management, however, is another story. They quoted me a price on the phone, which, unfortunately, I did not get in writing. On the day of the move, I was charged substantially more than that quote. Also, I was told there would be two movers, and there were three, which was fine, except that I had only planned on paying the rate for two. Finally, the movers wrapped all of my furniture in cloths. Since I was moving again in several weeks, they said I could keep it wrapped until the next move. It would cost me $300, but I'd get the money back when I moved the second time. When I went to schedule the second move, I was told I would get half that money back. I said that I had not been impressed with the company's communications, and Pat became very defensive. BEWARE--we had an incredibly disappointing experience with Five College Movers. The quality of the packing and handling of the contents of my 4000 square foot home was disastrous. Many items were damaged or destroyed. This would have been avoided if our belongings were handled and packaged properly. See pics for about 25% of my broken and damaged belongings. In my efforts to be compensated for some of this (and I have receipts for most) I had to make many phone calls and emails. Ultimately they offered me less than 15% of the DEPRECIATED value. I highly suggest you look to Olympia or Sitterly Movers and DO NOT HIRE FCM. Olympia was FABULOUS--we'd used them just one year prior and the experience was night and day. Note that Olympia moved us from many states away over multiple days. FCM moved us to the next town over. Olympia lost two lamp shades and bent a handle on our foosball table. Just another review noting the same kind of experience with FCM. Initially it was easy setting up a moving time and the woman I spoke to on the phone was friendly and helpful. Movers were great, very professional and hard working (although youngest guy was struggling to keep up a bit with the other 2 clearly more experienced guys). This is where things get interesting unsurprisingly as everyone seems to find out... At the end of the move the bill was higher than expected from the estimate (I was told that they charged per hour but if the time went slightly into the next hour they wouldnt charge for the full hour. My time went about 5-10 past the hour but I was still charged the full hour but I accepted this even though it was not what I had been told verbally). I signed the contract with mixed feelings, the movers did a good job though. A few days later I get an email for an invoice that is "overdue" and it's at least $230 more than the bill I had signed. I contacted FCM about this asking how this even happened, I was told they wouldn't be charging me immediately at the end of the day so I hadn't expected a charge yet. But now I have a bill that is more than the one i'd signed. I quickly realized this time I was talking to one of the big dawgs. As everyone has noted, this man was very condescending and passive aggressive. He told me he would "look into the charge" while telling me it looks like the movers "undercharged me". They definitely didn't undercharge and how is that my fault? I didn't even know they could just make the bill bigger than the one I signed without even telling me how it was more than what I signed. He simultaneously told me we would "look into this together" while also telling me the billing is "round trip". To sum it all up: setup is easy, movers are professional, but these dudes at the top?... Very passive aggressive and condescending. It's no coincidence all of a sudden when there is a problem with the bill it's like pulling teeth to get them to do a breakdown of the charges. No i'm not free all day to have someone talk down to me and explain their deranged math as to why im being charged for more than what I had signed for. So basically the moral is.. don't get big dawged by these guys, go with someone else if you can... Or at least just be prepared to be bamboozled and get everything they tell you beforehand in writing. read more

This company has some amazing employees but the way they conduct business is dreadful. They did not complete their contract of moving my total of large furniture items claiming it was because of space. This was decided before doors were removed(which was not even tried) and after they were moved from the first apartment. I was charged double what my quote was despite the move being uncompleted and they left my box spring and couch outside in the rain stating "that is your problem". They quoted me at 685 and ended up charging me almost 1300.00 This company is either committing fraud by not fulfilling contracts or is borderline fraud. read more

Must preface this by saying that I have posted many reviews but never one that is bad. I am professional, agreeable, and maintain business relationships for years, even decades, but my recent move from CT to MA, which resulted in several mishaps and some irreparable damage (it happens) was so poorly handled that writing a review will at least provide some closure. To be fair, the team that came was pleasant and well-intentioned, and the move was challenging, but I had been very transparent about those challenges and provided numerous photos. At the end of the move, in addition to various instances of mishandling, such as boxes marked fragile that were crushed, but with no damage and boxes marked with up arrows that were inverted, but also with no damage, there were five reports filed by the head mover for damage they caused: three instances of damage to walls, one was a cracked mirror on a large armoire, and the last one was a lamp that he knocked over and broke completely. In addition, while it was not discovered until the next day, a knob was missing on a table lamp that is one of a pair. I was told that I had to make a report for each of the five claims he filed and provide photos and info about cost, manufacturer, etc. It was time-consuming, but, again, understood, so I did it, and added one for the missing knob. There was no communication of regret, just hard line business. Below is their quoted response to those reports: "Based on your contract the maximum insurance coverage is $0.6/lb of damaged item, which would equal $246 in regards to the 410 lb. armoire. Lamps must be packed ahead of time, so it wouldn't be covered. But we can do $50. $50 would be the maximum for wall damage. Total compensation = $346" I replied to the parts of his terse response that I found particularly unreasonable. They are below. (His comments are numbered and quoted; my replies follow.) 1. "Lamps must be packed ahead of time, so it wouldn't be covered. But we can do $50." The lamp arrived, was unpacked and was fine. Tyler bumped into it and knocked it over. It has nothing to do with packing and it has nothing to do with negligence, but it is completely the fault of your employee and $50 is woefully insufficient compensation. 2. "$50 would be the maximum for wall damage." I see a maximum of $50 per instance of wall damage, of which I had 3. Three instances of wall damage at $50/each, which equals $150. Again I find that number insufficient, but I agreed to your terms. You also neglected to address the missing knob on the lamp. Photos attached again. I got a response today. This is all it said: "Decision is final." NO apology. NO explanation of how they could knock over a lamp that cost about $300 and pay only $50 for it. NO reason why THEIR contract says $50/max PER INSTANCE of wall damage and even though THEIR mover reported THREE instances of wall damage, they only paid me $50 total. Nothing at all about the missing knob. NO expressed regret, responsibility, or remorse. I did not hire them because it was a bargain. The move cost me $4,163, which I think is a fairly hefty price tag. I hired them because they promised me good service. I am not a complainer, and I am very fair-minded. No one was hurt and all of these things are just things. It's just money and things... except for the part where they behaved poorly, conducted business in bad faith, showed an utter lack of responsibility, treated me rudely, and unhesitantly flaunted an overall sense of unkindness. This is the only way I can have my say and let them know that what they have done is not all right. It is not all right. Before you hire them you should know how they treated at least one customer after they caused damage and it was completely of their doing. read more

We used the moving company from a move from Northampton to Enfield(CT). On the morning of the move the movers showed up on time and were extremely nice and proficient in packing and moving. The actually movers did a great job and were extremely hard working. My issue was with the management. They came out and conducted an estimate and our final bill ended up being almost double the estimated quote, they quoted us for 4.5 hours and our final bill was for 7.5 hours. We went with the company based on price as we did look into other companies but at the end the price was on par with others main well known moving companies (eg. United) ) without offering comparable benefits like insurance, they only offer basic coverage for your move . I also asked several times how close to the estimate do you think it will be because we were literally all packed up only major lifting they had to do was take apart the bed and couch, the owner ensured me of the price. The price was not the same at all. They factor in the time to drive to your home from the warehouse and from your home to the warehouse at their hourly rate which really hikes the price. Also they offer to help you with packing things but then charge you for supplies on the back end such as tape if you use them. I would recommend them if you are doing a quick short distance move as they did a good job but really price out the distance and time for travel into your cost, we ended up paying over an hour just in travel time for the truck to get to us and back. read more

Follow up on previous review: owner immediately reached out to not only resolve my outstanding claims, but to offer apology and explain their intention for better processing operations for their future customers. He did not ask me to update this review, but future customers should be aware that the company did take immediate remediation action. DO NOT USE. Movers themselves were great young men. Professional, respectful, and strong. That's all you need out of them. The management team should NEVER be allowed to operate a business. They are a month delinquent on responding to my damage claims that the MOVER insisted I file, after he accidentally damaged multiple planks of my hardwood floors. I have called 6+ times looking for resolution. Not for hundreds of dollars. Just resolution. On the most recent call over a week ago, Phil told me "I don't like hearing from you as much as you don't like having to follow up" and to "temper my expectations". Essentially, leave us alone. I was then told I need to send an email asking for a follow up, because calling wasn't sufficient. Was told I would hear back by the end of the week. That was a while ago. I gave 2 ratings because the movers were very pleasant and seemed to want to do a good job After a full day, local move (17 minutes from house to house) at $4100.00 - I was asked if Id like to include a 20% tip. I did tip but nowhere near 20%. List of damages: Old house- Broken door - 6 in gouge in living room wall - 9-12 inch scrape in office woodwork - cost to me $750 back to owners to fix the damages New house - Broke the arm on new sofa - damaged sliding glass door - threw items on top of each other in storage unit. They initiated damage reports for some of this. lots More detail but not sure how it adds value, 5 weeks post move I spoke to Patrick after leaving voice mail and email. He reached out to resolve. We started off nicely when he started swearing at me and told me to "do better". After nicely putting Patrick in his place, he admitted he should not have said that to me. He handled the rest of the conversation poorly, at which point I told him I wanted nothing, it wasn't worth spending more time on, I just knew who I would Not be using in the future. Patrick assure me that these converstations don't happen often, the majority of 62 reviews tell me otherwise. What I learned: 1. Moving is expensive 2. Buy the insurance 3. Do not deal with Five College 4. Their movers were great to be around 5. Their management is highly unprofessional l 6. They are not "stress free" - due to their managers. Things happen, I get it, own it and do right by your customers 7 After my conversation with Patrick, he offered me a $300 refund, I took it and cut my losses.
