These clowns are absolute garbage. The only "job" they're going to do is a con. They will show up with a truck that won't start and break your stuff loading it like they've never done it before. They will claim they can't fit everything because they won't stack anything higher than 5 feet. I'm pretty sure a crew of 5 year olds would have been more professional. And after all that, the price was more than double what they quoted; and once I assessed the damage done to my propert, it was clear they should have paid me. Shane and Pat picked up our couch in Granby, MA and delivered to our Easthampton, MA apartment. The couch is a pricy MCM leather couch that weighs a ton, and the stairways in our place are steep and gnarly to say the least. They were on time, professional and super courteous. Our couch looks perfect without any scratches or dings. Lastly, they accommodated our call for help the same day!!! These guys are the only game in town that charges you per 1 hour. I wish I had read the Yelp comments before my roommate hired these guys. We laughed so hard at the other customers' reviews because they described our experience exactly. "Smooth Movers" sounds like a laxative, but the home I moved out of is still quite constipated with most of our belongings the next day, in spite of paying these goofs to get our shit out! They told us that bringing their own truck (instead of the U-Haul) would cost the same - we had originally planned to have them load and unload a U-haul for us. But the vehicle they brought - and charged us for - had a bad battery. My roommate had to jump start their vehicle before they could drive it the 16 miles to our new place. Loading a moving truck is an art, a thing of beauty and awe when done right. These fellows are not artists. I have seen smaller trucks loaded with double what they managed to get into theirs. They did not make good use of their equipment such as straps and dollies, and the truck was barely 2/3 full when they declared "nothing more can fit, you need a tractor trailer". Then, the truck wouldn't start after they were done unloading. We are kind people, and we tried, and failed, to get their truck started again. This meant a frustrating delay before our caravan of friends (who had showed up to help us arrange our new abode) could drive back for four carloads of belongings that should have been on that truck. $525 would have been reasonable IF THEY HAD DONE THE JOB we hired them for. When settling the bill they claimed charges for using their truck that were not mentioned at first. No tip for these posers. read more

I am so angry that I hired Smooth Movers. Shane O'Brien has no redeeming qualities and should not be in business. If you hire him you do so at your considerable risk. And as you can see from the other reviews I am not the first person to complain about him. I hired this company when I was selling a large home in the Boston area. I knew that it would take 3 trips to move my property into storage in western Massachusetts where I planned to purchase a new home. My plan was to rent an apartment from my sister until I found a house. Shane moved 2 of the 3 loads into storage-the 1st to E Logmeadow and the 2nd to his friend Brian's complex that he had enthusiastically recommended-Northampton Storage on Industrial Drive. Before the date of the final move Shane said that I needed to rent a large UHaul because he would not be able to fit everything in his truck. I had no choice but to pay for the additional truck because of how little time I had left before my closing. So I did. On the day before I closed on the sale of my house Shane and his employee arrived for the final load to be delivered to Northampton Storage and the Easthampton apartment. As he was backing the truck into my driveway he ran over the landscaping at the bottom of the driveway, uprooting a large shrub. I called out to him to stop and he angrily jumped out of the truck. As he again proceeded up the driveway I called out again because his truck was getting within inches of the UHaul. He jumped out of the truck again appearing irate and his outrageous behavior only escalated from there. He swore the entire time. He was complaining about the furniture being too heavy and even cursed Raymond Flanagan Furniture for selling Armoires! Crazy talk!! He proceeded to roughly handle my expensive furniture and fragile boxed items and when my sister told him to stop he berated me! I felt helpless because I had to clear the house for the buyer's 8 am final walk through. Then he refused to finish loading my stuff into the UHAUL because he wanted to leave. He threatened to dump all of my stuff on my other sister's driveway where I was renting an apartment but he ended up delivering to the storage He retained the keys to the storage locks from the second load and then claimed not to have them! Then he sent a text later saying that Brian put a lock on the unit. Meanwhile I had to make 2 trips from Boston to Easthampton with the UHAUL and didn't get back to the apartment with the 2nd load until 3am!!! When I went to Northampton Storage the next day I didn't have any keys. When Brian went with us to the climate controlled unit he denied having the keys and said he would cut the locks. There was no lock on the unit! The unit was filled with stuff and the other unit was also filled so it was impossible to see the condition of most of my things except for some gauges in some wood furniture and heavy items ( including pieces of a sectional couch, stacked on another expensive couch The other unit was also completely stuffed Only a fool would hire this company after reading a consensus of negative reviews regarding the outrageous behaviors of the owner, Shane O'Brien and the poor quality of his service. read more

Worst movers ever. They only packed half of our things, despite us having the largest Uhaul truck. Movers who unpacked the truck on the other end asked why there was so much space left in the truck. The Smooth Movers sighed dramatically every time they picked up a box, and told us we had too many books. They brought no straps with them and had to go back to get more dollies. They left things we told them to pack and packed things we told them to leave. They said they would take apart a piece of furniture and just left it. They left 30 minutes early despite their being boxes and furniture still all over the house which we had to move downstairs ourselves in order to decide whether to repack the truck or put it all in storage. We were too exhausted for the former. Now we have to go back and hire more movers, another truck. Moving across the country is hard enough and they made it one of the worst experiences of my life. read more

We hired this father/son team because we were looking for a mover who specialized in moving pianos. On their first review of the items we had, they gave us an estimate. They indicated that they would have no trouble getting what we had onto their truck. We told them that we would have a number of more boxes, but they were confident. As the moving date approached, we called them and suggested they come and look at what we had, just so they wouldn't get caught in a bind of having too small of a truck. At that point we were about 99% packed, and were maybe 2 or 3 boxes away from being finished. Come moving day, all we heard was griping and complaining about how many boxes we had, and how they might not be able to get everything on the truck. I reiterated that that concern was exactly why we wanted them to come back a second time to see what we had to move. On delivery day, they again griped and complained about the number of boxes, and the weight of the piano (remember; they supposedly specialize in moving pianos). We have a kitten, who was closed up in our bedroom. There was one item which needed to be placed in the bedroom, and my wife told the father; "Please wait until I can get our cat and put her in the bathroom next door, so she won't run away." Despite her telling him this at least 3 times, he continued to follow her up the stairs with the item in question. The cat did run out, but fortunately went back into the room, where my wife was able to collect her. When she told him, "I told you to wait so that I could collect the cat! There are doors open all through this house, and she could have run out and gotten killed!", he made no response. When I prepared to pay, the father asked what bank our check was drawn on. We told him, and he asked if their was a branch near by. We told him yes, and that we would be glad to provide driving directions. He expressed concern about the bank being "so far" away. We offered to pay utilizing a different bank, but indicated that we weren't sure if there was enough $ in that account. We then offered to pay by credit card, if it was more convenient for them. He indicated that it would be. I gave him my card & he ran it through his phone. I then looked at my bill, and he had added $40 for us to use our card. I told him that I would not pay forty extra dollars for using my card, especially because I was doing so not for my convenience, but for his. He then did something with his phone, and I wrote him a check. I contacted our bank, and told them of my concern that they would try to "double dip," taking a payment from our card & cashing the check. The bank dealt with that possibility by drastically reducing our available credit. Five minutes (or so) later, he called to say that he had miscalculated and had not included their time spent unloading. He informed me that the amount actually owed was $450 more than the amount on the bill. They returned and I wrote a new check for the new amount. To this day, I don't know whether this new amount is accurate, or just an "annoyance" fee. As for being "piano moving specialists," the front of our piano has at least 20 deep gouges. When I called them the next day to let them know about this, the father responded with "just slap some stain on it, and it'll be fine." Naturally, the contract terms and conditions on the back of the bill make clear that The carrier (namely Smooth Movers) are not liable for any damages to musical instruments. These 2 are about as far from "Smooth Movers" as you can get. We would strongly recommend that you not hire them. read more

Our downstairs neighbors were moving out from the first floor, and they gave us their furniture -- one couch and two recliner chairs. We couldn't move the furniture ourselves, and also, we were worried about damaging the property and incurring the wrath of our landlord. So we looked for professionals who could do the job. We found 3 moving companies in the Northampton area, but Smooth Movers was the only one that had a minimum of 1 hour. The other companies wanted a minimum of 2.5 or 4 hours. Smooth Movers also had the lowest hourly rate, which was $95/hr. Smooth Movers gave us a time window and said that they would come in the afternoon. We got a call around 1:30 pm and they were at the apartment by 2 pm. The three men quickly moved an old bed out to the curb and brought the 3 pieces of furniture upstairs to our apartment. Everything was done efficiently and carefully. We paid them for an hour and the job only took 20 minutes, but the peace of mind was worth it. Overall, a "smooth" experience and we were very satisified. read more

These guys are very unprofessional and do not know how to disassemble and reassemble furniture. They were rude and ruined several of my items. Also, the father that runs the business thinks that the fact that his son, who does the moving, served in the military, makes them all immune from criticism. I had to buy a new futon frame and bed frame due to their incompetence. Now, they say that they didn't do my move. They did, and it was a total disaster. Bullying and lying on their part, part of which consists of calling *me* a liar, seem consistent with the experience I had with them, which was disrespectful and aggressive. A friend contacted them and put down a deposit to help move. The day of the move, they showed up and took a walk through of the job they already agreed to do. They then suddenly got in their truck and as they were driving away, they said they weren't doing the job! I would never recommended them to anyone!!! read more

I have never been treated so poorly by another human being In my life. We had made an appointment for 9 am and got blown off. Around 10 we decided to call and see where our movers were and I got cussed out because it's apparently my fault that the owner was not prepared and his batteries in his trucks were dead due to the cold weather. He called me several cuss words and told me to f off and hire someone else. As everyone knows moving is already stressful enough but for someone to treat a young female (especially one who has a current back injury and cannot move on her own) is down right unacceptable. Do not hire this person unless you want unreliability and abusive behaviour toward yourself. I don't need to pay someone to be horrible to me. read more

OK, so I haven't used a lot of moving companies so I don't have a lot to compare this to. However, it seemed to me that these guys were really cheap, moved unbelievably fast and did a great job. In fact if I were getting paid by the hour I would move a little bit slower Watching Shane the owner work is amazing. Faced with a large daunting object he just kind of gets in there and moves it. No circling around or thinking needed. Moved my household full of stuff 50 miles away and the whole thing cost me only $560. Best money that I ever spent since I usually move myself and it is a huge amount of work. read more

the guys were extremely efficient--they were running like crazy and moved everything (2 bdrm townhouse) within 2 hours. they did not ask for more money at the end. all that would be positive if... they left few boxes in the house because : 1. they did not tell us in advance that they would not move boxes with food or cleaning staff, such as even shampoo or dish washing detergent. 2. they did not tell us that they would not move the plants from our porch. 3. few boxes were left without any justification. just because, I guess, they were running too fast. that left us in totally desperate position, because the guy, who was suppose to do a walk thru in the house we were moving out before the closing, said that he would not sign anything having a house full of shit. we were about to run to rent U-hall to finish moving by yourselves, and then our broker came with her truck and moved us. it took her two runs. so if you like risk you can go with them, but I warned you! read more

Wow! Never have I experienced a group of movers, ones to whom you are paying $125 an hour, who get so violently angry at being asked to move stuff. After the movers performed a few hours' worth of moving tasks, i.e. moving items from Easthampton to Northampton, then from Northampton to Hampshire College in Amherst, we asked that they move one of the couches that was in the suite up to the top level. This caused one of the movers, the owner of the company, to angrily declare that there are lots of college kids who can do the job themselves. We pointed out that a) many of the students had disabilities and were unable to do it for themselves (just because a person is not in a wheelchair, does not mean they do not have a disability), and b) the students were not being paid $125 an hour by us. He then went into a tirade stating that there were no disabled kids in there, and that "these college kids are a bunch of lazy spoiled brats", and similar hyperbole. Of course, the employees then joined in on the abusive vitriol, saying that they "hate college kids", then wondering why people are angry and stating that they are "here to help" so we should be nice to them. In the words of Don Draper, "That's what the money's for!" Do not waste your money on these bigoted GED rejects. read more

Stay away! Not only did Shane and his crew not show the day of my appointed move, the owner, Shane, screamed at me over the phone when I called to ask where they were. When I was able to prove I had booked with him, i got an angry, grudging apology, but was told that there was nothing he could do about it. Smooth Movers saved us after another company left us high and dry by no-showing our scheduled appointment. We called Smooth Movers and they had three guys at our apartment within two hours. They were extremely fast and efficient and were in and out in less than an hour. Even better, they charged us less than the previous company wanted to. Highly recommended. read more

Couldn't believe it! We were moving locally and we own our own B2B company (not related to moving). We knew asking for a certificate of insurance and any agreement paperwork was the right way to do business. The owner actually had the nerve to yell at me on the phone and say, "We don't do that here! If you want proof of insurance and an agreement GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!" and then hung up the phone! Needless to say we took our business elsewhere, but please, BE WARNED, this is a very questionable company and very unprofessional owner. read more

I had to deal with one of their workers in the course of my day and he was rude and inconsiderate, without and cause or provocation. He felt like he had authority and wanted to push someone around and just doesn't realize that some people don't care enough to argue with someone so insignificant. When I called to report/complain, the man who answered the call said I was a loser, then hung up on me. When I called back, the same man yelled at me, "Stop f%*#ing calling me" and hung up again.
