I visited this place twice. The first time was awesome!!! The second time was not so great!!! The patio is nice and relaxing. However my bf and I had cheese burger. It was not good. The bread was wet and taste was awful. Drinks were ok. My bf asked for a margarita, and was given without salt on it. It was served on plastic cups. Roof top is nice. Food was not. Ambiance they get an A for effort. I mean who ever heard of a rooftop in Evanston. It's like finding a good place for Strudel in Belfast. On through the entrance of this taco place you will be ushered into the area with the stairs. If you don't get out much and you are from the burbs this could be it because the babysitters are getting paid $25 an hour these days. My friend asked for some bread. There was no butter to go along with it. I happened to like the guac and chips. I thought it was not that spicy. I had a vodka and cranberry. A argument can be made that they should put more elbow grease into pouring the vodka. But back to the bread for a minute. I did some type of intervention for my friend and got them to give us some oil for the bread. The wait staff did not seem to know much about the food selection. A quick trip the wash room and it seems like they are trying to recreate the vibe between a 1950's school cafeteria and that crazy feel you feel when you walk in the wash rooms at Wrigley. I noticed that people ordering the $14 hamburger would not get French fries but get potato salad instead. I will return once again in a few months for the hamburger and by that time maybe there will be a fries option and maybe some new menu options. Although I understand the need for places to have its own identity, the need to have the pac man game available gives the impression that there are several generations that have to be jumped here in order for this place to have that feel that this is a modern place. I really like this place.. rooftop is nice and spacious, the staff are amazing and the have a lot of games in their garage style room. (Ping pong, foosball, Jenga, connect 4 and bags). Horrible service and ok food. Too bad, because the rooftop space is really nice. Unfortunately overshadowed by the shit show that's run there. Our server Franklin, was awful and not attentive at all. The whole section was upset with him. Had to get up and pull him away from his gossip circles in the back area with other servers a few times, just ridiculous. Also, the food is wheeled over to your table on a dirty busing cart. The grill is right there, just feet away from the dining area. Had a phenomenal experience with a large group event at Five & Dime and would recommend it to anyone looking for a space for a larger happy hour / cocktail hour. The space: They have an indoor space, as well as a beautiful, large patio. Part of the patio is roped off with couches and games for groups (shuffleboard, jenga, bags, etc.). It's a really nice mix of covered and outdoors, so that there's something for everyone and any weather. The logistics: I called ahead and explained what I was looking for (space for 30ish people to come for a cocktail hour on a weeknight; was hoping to avoid ordering ahead/meeting a minimum; wanted everyone to be able to have their own tabs, etc.). I immediately spoke to someone knowledgeable who said they could accommodate and booked my reservation. From calling around to other places in Evanston, this was the only time I was not referred to an event person, and was not required to commit to a certain group size or order amount. This made for a quick and painless process to reserve a space, and also easy for the guests and I to order what we want and not have to split bills, etc. The experience: Apple called me the day of to confirm our group and time. She met our group immediately upon arrival and was very cheerful and helpful. She even offered the outdoor game space to our group at no extra charge, which was great (we had previously discussed just having a section at the indoor bar, which would have still been nice). We had multiple servers who were very attentive and friendly, had an extensive drink menu, and allowed our group to play games and enjoy the space up until close (with no one rushing us out even as we lingered). Can't thank the staff enough for giving us such a nice space and great service to celebrate! Would recommend to anyone looking to host an event in the Evanston area. read more

Everything they do, they do well. Best cocktails that I've had in the area. Prices are high but on the good value side. Fantastic decor and views from the rooftop outdoor dining area. An unforgettable moment I experienced was a fellow patron just before sundown asking the waitress which way the sun was going to go (spoiler alert: down!) so that she could figure out if it was going to glare in her eyes. They have a few well maintained and fun pinball machines as well as an arcade machine. I only wish they'd turn up the volume on the games a bit since they have to compete with the music. My favorite drink is the Hot Joy, very strong though it doesn't taste like it. One's plenty for me. Food is fantastic, limited choices but what they offer they do well. Nachos are a great value, large enough to split unless you're exceptionally hungry. Ribs are great, Chinese food inspired wings incredible, they taste like General Tso Chicken. I wish they still had the memorable burger special from the summer of 2018, now they only do a standard cheeseburger. read more

I can't believe I haven't posted a review yet... this has been our go to for a couple years... the rooftop is amazing. Now with the change of seasons, they have a slew of heaters and somehow even on a very windy day it was quite comfortable and sheltered! We love the decor, the food, the drinks, the service... it feels more like a place you'd find in downtown! (We are also huge fans of tacos diablo downstairs but feel safer outdoors) you must try the "hot joy" spicy margarita ... delicious, but heads up ... it is potent! read more

Came here for drinks with a medium-sized group of friends (6 total) and had an awesome time!! It was a gorgeous day so we sat on the rooftop patio which had gorgeous views and an incredible vibe. There are a number of picnic tables and areas with couches and benches for larger groups. The food and drinks weren't anything crazy, but 5 stars is really for the atmosphere. The patio is incredible and there are plenty of arcade games, pool tables, cornhole (aka bags), etc to keep everyone busy. Everyone was very friendly and pleasant. We were seated right away, even though our whole party hadn't arrived yet. Granted it wasn't super busy, but that's always much appreciated! As mentioned, the drinks were pretty standard to other places, and the beer selection isn't great. We were mainly coming to catch up and drink, but ended up getting the nachos and wings as snacks. Both dishes had good flavor and were well cooked, but also pretty standard. I didn't really look too far into the food menu. We go for the ambiance. The rooftop deck is a lot of fun. There's also arcade games and pinball inside. When there's not private parties you can play ping pong and pool. Went last night with a friend to catch up after the pandemic and had such a great time! The rooftop space was beautiful and breezy, the service was sweet and attentive, and we both loved our dinners. We both had the "Yes Please" cocktail, shared the burrata appetizer, she got the Impossible burger, and I had the French dip. Huge portions and everything was yummy. What a nice place! I came here once last summer and have wanted to come back but I usually find myself spending my weekends in the city and I never seem to find time during the work week. The place offers a nice menu and the drinks are great. I just drank this time around. I had the Rosè froze which was a very "basic white girl" drink but perfect for the summer heat. I sat at a table on the rooftop but what I love about Five and Dime is that there's all sorts of different seating from indoor booths, outdoor lounge chairs, bar seating or if you please you can choose not to sit and instead play life-size Jenga or cornhole. This place is a lot of fun and was pretty lively this Friday night (until it closes at 11pm that is). It is a different vibe from the city but I love that this place is just a short walk away from my home. As for price, it is on par with the rest of Evanston so expect to spend around $11 a drink. Love love love LOVE. Went here for the first time last Thursday after work so around 6:00ish, and had an amazing time. I heard this place opened due to social media and when I saw they had a rooftop I added it to the top of my summer restaurant to do list :) Entrance is really cool, they're industrial style stairs and it feels like a best kept secret because it is :) Can tell they put a lot of thought into the decor and architecture. There was a couple people in line ahead of us but the line moved super quickly, the hostess did a great job seating people asap. Inside area has a bar, cool room with arcade games, some seating, and two garage style doors so the room had an indoor/outdoor vibe. Outside/rooftop there's a gorgeous long bar with a flat screen tv and tons of different seating. Great atmosphere! They also have a private room for hosting parties. There currently was a private party going on and they had drink service, ping pong table, jenga, bags, looked so fun! Finally the best part, the food! Food was AMAZING. A+++. My boyfriend got the ribs and they were absolutely delicious. I got the carnita sandwich, also delicious! Portions were big that was a major plus, pricing is reasonable, and food came out very fast. Everything came with a bunch of sides (nice surprise) so we were pleasantly stuffed: potato salad, cole slaw, pickles, and I had some hot peppers and dipping sauce for my sandwich. We each also had a beer, I had the Sketchbook one which is a local evanston brewery and it was great. Our server was Apple she was very nice, checked up on us the whole time, and again our food came out very fast. I didnt want to drive downtown so I hopped on yelp (as always) and stumbled upon Five and Dime. Gotta say it was the pictures of the patio that called me in because the name was definitely not that inticing. The experience was great though so I will ignore the weird name. If anyone feels the need to explain, I dont mind, bring on the weird story. I digress however, I truly enjoyed my time here. We put our name on the list and had drinks by the patio in the meantime. I didnt care for their shiraz monastrell, in fact I know that the bottle had been opened for days because it tasted stale but all their other drinks were amazing. It took a hot minute for them to call us for the table but gotta say the service from the servers was fantastic and the food was just great. By far the best quesadillas i have ever had. I dont know what made them great but they were so cheesy. Their ahi tuna was amazing as well. So fresh and so tasty. The sauce that was drizzled on top made it even better. I enjoyed my time here, can't wait to come again. You should too. read more

Came here for the first time at about 8pm on a weeknight. There was no wait which was awesome! The decor and layout is absolutely great!! It flows well from the indoor to the outdoor space. We sat outside and were amazed by everything! There's all kinds of seating, from couches to picnic tables. Its great for a date night or to spend time with friends. Lawrence was our server, and he did a good job making sure everything was A+. The actual menu has limited options- but good choices. But wait.. There's more!!! I really enjoyed this place! It was fun, exciting, vibrant, and alive on a Monday evening. It's located on the second floor and they have outdoor seating which I enjoyed. They have plenty of seats for all types of group sizes. We had the pipework's ninja vs unicorn double ipa for $7.75. It's really good. Must try and the price is amazing. I tried the taco diablo margarita and I wasn't impressed at all. It tasted like a virgin margarita which my sister got. Their nachos is a must get! It's great for groups and they put plenty of toppings. I'm always hesitant of nachos because it's mostly chips and not enough toppings but this one was phenomenal. It's great for sharing and munching on. I normally don't like beans but all the toppings and sauce they put on there made me love beans in it. The wings...O.M.G. It's literally one of the best wings I've ever had. The size is a pretty good size. It is drenched in sauce which I love love love! It was so good that I could not stop talking about it. The chicken was cooked well and the sauce was just superb. If you're going to eat anything, get the wings please! The staff were friendly and accommodating. They were so attentive. Our server was one of the best servers I've had. He was really nice and made sure we enjoyed our experience there. So I want to give this place five stars just for being this amazing rooftop place a block from my apartment, but I think there's a little room for improvement. We've been, oh...6 or 7 times now. I can never remember the name because we always just refer to it as The Porch. During the first week the service was incredibly slow, but they seem to have pretty much worked that out. Props for a hiring a full crew. Now that the secret is out, there's a generous wait for outside tables almost every time of the day. Factor that in if you go. They'll take your number and shoot you a text when your table is ready if you'd like to take a walk and enjoy the weather. Indoor seating is right at the open walls (picture attached), and there is never a wait to sit there. Drinks are EXCELLENT. In particular is this amazing gin slushy thing that makes me feel like I'm poolside in phoenix. Amazing. The food for me has been hit and miss. The exact same dish can be delicious or not so hot, depending. My nachos came with a weird queso (possibly jarred? I don't know) and almost no beans one night and then loaded with fresh cheese and beans a different night. The same night we got the so-so nachos, they were out of flat bread, out of rose wine, and out of something else that I can't remember right now...sausage maybe? I forget. Maybe they were out of cheese and running low on beans too. Oh yeah! They were out of straws, LOL So I don't even care if the food is sometimes not so great or they run out of stuff or they're crowded. They have pinball and ping pong, cornhole, and fooseball. The only TVs are in the games area and bar, so you can choose to sit away from them and focus on socializing! I love it. I find myself staring at any television in the area whether I want to or not. I'd rather not have them around when I'm out. Five and Dime, if you're reading...PLEASE consider opening for lunch on the weekends next summer! I don't know if the name is a play on their official hours (5p-10p), but this place is crying for more opening hours. If I could have one of those tasty gin slushies in the full sunshine, I'd think I'd died and gone to heaven. read more

Five & Dime is a difficult place to get into on a super hot summer day for an early dinner, so make plans and arrive early! It was so warm on the rooftop that the patrons and staff in the sun were visibly wilting, including myself, as I waited for an open table at the very sunny bar. The staff, professionals until the end, simply shrugged it off and made sure to hydrate, which I admire! As for me, well, I ordered a rather fancy, yet quite tasty, cocktail off of the menu and was promptly served by the bartender. I then watched as an amazing assortment of very yummy looking burgers made their way out of the kitchen and past me into the crowded rooftop tables. Alas, as my friend arrived, we decided it was too warm to stay, so next time I'll dress more appropriately and bring some sunscreen! First time eating here and I thought the food was delicious! Tad up in price but you get what you pay for. My salmon was a bit undercooked but not unbearable (still very good, great sides). My boyfriend had the mixed grill and the cheesy sausage was particularly tasty. For drinks I recommend the froze rose - it was perfect for summer. Thank god it's nice out! My friend and I went here for dinner after work and we were seated right away. We decided to start with the Italian burrata, it came with four slices of toast and the burrata was covered with basil oil and tomatoes. It was a great appetizer! For our main course we both decided to get the poke bowl and it was a lot bigger than we expected. Overall the fish in the bowl was good and fresh but the seaweed and sauce were a little over done in my taste. For dessert, I got the flan and my friend got the brown butter cake. The flan tasted more like creme brûlée, but it wasn't bad. My friend said the brown butter cake was pretty average as well. All in all, loved the area and the food was decent. I would probably return to try the other things on the menu! read more

The best rooftop dining in Evanston, with an open flame grill that produces delicious burgers, ribs and fish. Fries and other potatoes are good. Their shrimp cocktail is a surprisingly large serving. The typical drinks are good-sized and strong and they throw in some unique offerings as well. Their wine list is good enough. Staff has always been friendly, accommodating and professional. Really, we've always, every time (and that's many, many times), been happy here in warm weather. Yes the table games and arcade are cool and yes a rooftop in summer must be nice but going in late winter was an underwhelming experience. Food and drink menus were extremely limited. The indoor space is very very poorly lit. I ordered the "big salad" and got mostly overdressed lettuce and a few pieces of beet, 2-3 grape tomatoes, and 2 slices of chewy bacon. The flatbread was the size of a naan with 2 tiny mushrooms on it. I don't see any reason to come back. read more

I was excited to try Five & Dime because of the generally positive reviews, but I was disappointed in both of my experiences here. My mom, sister and I tried to eat here on a Tuesday night around 9. The hostesses ignored us and continued to talk to each other for a few minutes before we interrupted to ask if we could be seated. We were told it would be a 15-30 minute wait, but they did not appear to be busy. Instead of waiting, we went next door to Taco Diablo and were seated immediately. I decided to give Five & Dime another chance and came for dinner with my sister. The food, drinks, and service were all good, but nothing was spectacular. I am still put of by my first experience here and the other aspects of Five&Dime did not make up for that. read more

Had a fantastic dinner at Five & Dime. I was a bit worried that there might be a wait on a Saturday night, but our party of four was seated right away. All the servers and waiters were so nice and the service was very fast. I started with the watercress soup, which arrived very hot. It was very delicious and bigger than I expected. I also ordered the tuna poke salad, which I anticipated being somewhat small, but it was massive. I definitely did not need the soup as well. The poke was delicious--so flavorful and the perfect amount of sauce. I loved the addition of fried shrimp. The lulus ginger salad was fantastic, especially the chicken, and also extremely big. Vegans, plant based diets and people with allergies beware. The menus do not list all ingredients put into their dishes. I repeatedly spoke with the managers and owner telling them they need to list their ingredients, their response is "we can't possibly list all our ingredients" and "if we listed everything people were allergic to, we would be here all day". The owner said "you should have asked for our Vegan Menu", to which every server I have asked for it since responds with "we don't have a Vegan Menu". I was very surprised to find out is their OG Margarita has egg white powder in it. Is this listed on their menu? Nope. Do all the servers ask if you're okay with egg in a drink that egg is never put in? Nope. I asked them politely over 6 months ago to be more clear on this, have they changed at all? Nope.
