Have been twice in the past few weeks with friends. Their rooftop doesn't disappoint, though if you sit too close to the barbeques like I did, you may go home smelling like a cookout. Their double burger is nothing too special, but hits the spot. Friends have enjoyed the Lulu's Ginger Salad with tofu and the nachos. Very large portion sizes! read more

It was a great roof top to hang out with a friend. Service was OK. The waitress was friendly. But very disappointed in food. I ordered Lulu's ginger salad with tofu. There was not enough ginger dressing, so whole thing tasted very bland . Ordered molten chocolate cake and it was not molten. It was pretty solid in the middle. However, the tast was good. But paying for almost $13 for that dessert, it was not worth it. read more

My in-laws hosted our rehearsal dinner here last month, and it was so great! The game room/rooftop space we had reserved was the perfect size for our party of about 35 people. The service was great -- the staff were kind and attentive to getting people drinks, cleaning up, preparing our cake and helping us set up music and decorations. The food was very good and we got many compliments from our guests. I would definitely host/go to a party here again -- loved it! read more

Rooftop dining not too far from home?! perfect for a nice day! First off, we had some trouble finding this restaurant. The entrance is just stairs leading up with a hard to see Five and Dime sign. But once you go up those stairs it opens up into a beautiful rooftop area! modern, clean, open! The food was average at best. We had: Burrata - the most enjoyable dish of the day, but I love cheese and bread! Wings - nice crunch but just way too sweet for our taste Poke Poke - beautiful looking dish! but it looked better than it tasted. It was decent but I have had better. Decided to try Five & Dime, as their rooftop patio seemed very appealing on a warm evening and adhered to COVID-19 social distancing. They do not take reservations, so we showed up at 6 PM and was told that the wait would be at most one hour, but more likely 45 minutes. The 45 minute mark rolled around and we asked the hostess our status and she replied there were 11 parties in front of us. Seriously? The wait actually ended up being 1 hour and 30 minutes. The worst part was that the hostess didn't even acknowledge or apologize for the extended wait time. The rooftop patio was very nice and clean, with the tables being distanced nicely. We ended up ordering the Nachos appetizer and Genuine Burgers for our entrees. The food menu was rather limited and pricy for the quality ($17 for beef nachos and $16 for a simple burger). I had also ordered a Diet Coke to drink which came out flat. I called this out to the hostess and she brought me a new drink, also flat. The restaurant seemed to be understaffed for how many tables they had. The service was horrendously slow - the food was glorified bar food. First and last time we will eat here! read more

Solid place with a gorgeous rooftop. Their food menu is a bit limited, and they were out of some of their items, which I found strange (they were out of brussel sprouts and their pork sandwich), but the items that we did order were pretty good and were appropriate portions, without having leftovers, and were of good quality. Being in the midst of Covid, the outdoor dining was a great solution, especially since they space their tables apart by about 6'. It wasn't terribly crowded on a Saturday @ brunch/lunch hour. We got the burger and the Impossible burger. The burger is essentially a double cheeseburger, but huge, good quality meat, two slices of cheese, pretty tasty! The Impossible Burger, as usual, tasted like a single-patty burger, and was equally tasty. It came with some fries that were fried to a golden crispiness and seasoned well, plus cole slaw and some dill pickle slices. While the food was tasty, and they had a solid beverage menu, the prices were a little steep. Two burgers and a beer came out to be $52, which seems a bit high for a brunch in Evanston. All in all, great service, great atmosphere, relatively easy parking out front, good food, little pricey. read more

I have only heard great things about Five & Dime so I was very excited to finally experience it! The weather was perfect out so my friends and I were able to sit outside on the rooftop patio. The patio is incredibly spacious and the design is modern and hip! I loved that it didn't feel crowded even with a lot of people and the staff were friendly and attentive. The patio has both an indoor and outdoor bar as well. I gave 4/5 stars because, unfortunately, they do not have happy hour specials and a limited food menu for the patio. The server explained that the outdoor bar and grill would be open for the season this weekend allowing more food options to be available. I will definitely be back! read more

This was mine and my husband's first visit. The tuna poke is fantastic, and HUGE -- it can definitely be shared by two. I enjoyed a virgin version of the "Yes, Please" cocktail (with passion fruit and pomegranate juices). We also shared a gazpacho, which was nice and refreshing. Very friendly wait staff, and so nice to dine on the roof top. I bet it's beautiful when it gets darker, with the little lights on. read more

One of my favorite nice weather spots in the north suburbs! Their rooftop deck is gorgeous with lots of spaced out tables. The wait staff is always friendly and great with managing larger parties. I've rented this place out for a graduation dinner and everything went super smoothly. Their guac is delish, super chunky with crispy chips and their margaritas are stroooong! My favorite item on the menu is the tuna poke (pictured) which is SO beautiful but SO much food. I recommend splitting it with someone else. They share a kitchen with Taco Diablo below so if you want tacos, be sure to ask for the Taco Diablo menu and they can bring it right up! Such a good idea, 2 menus for 1 restaurant. We visited Five & Dime last night mainly because it is one of the few places in the greater Chicagoland area that still has pinball machines. Although the menu appears to be somewhat of a work in progress, and with a relatively small number of items, we both were able to find things that we wanted to try. The service is somewhat of a work in progress too, not horrible by any means, but not yet as polished and effortless as places that have been in business for many years. I have faith that given a few more weeks, they will be up to speed. The key thing is that the servers and hostesses seemed to have a friendly and outgoing attitude which is certainly pleasant to see. I included a panorama photo of the "inside" seating with this review and also of the games available to play. All were in very good condition, fully functioning and CLEAN play fields (unusual these days). "Radical" was set to 50 cents for one game, 75 cents for two games and the "free game" threshold was achievable by someone with average skills. Parking is street only and a few spots at the nearby post office. The Davis Street Metra and Purple Line stations are a couple of blocks east. All in all we enjoyed our visit and would probably be regulars if we didn't live so far away. read more

I was invited as a +1 for a company holiday party and was not expecting much. The way it was described to me I was expecting a suburban bar meets Dave & Busters. Approaching this with a sense of dread, I headed to Evanston. Boy was I proved wrong. Great looking space, just a couple of arcade/pinball games, neat little set up. Very warm and inviting. A separate room filled with other games like table tennis and giant jenga is right across the ha;;. Staff was uber friendly. Really attentive and accommodating. The group all seemed to be having a good time. Food was fantastic. Ribs were top notch, three different taco fillings with a bunch of accoutrements to make your own. A couple of flatbread type pizzas, some sides (coleslaw and corn elote) plus a veggie tray rounded out the offerings. Warm chips and guacamole plus quesadillas for the tables. Desserts were brownies, lemon bars, macaroons, and (unbelievably good) nutella beignets. Drinks were tasty, bartenders seemed quite knowledgeable and competent. Turned me on to a couple of new ciders. There is a roof top in summer that I will definitely be back to try, alas in Chicago in January it was not surprisingly not available. It also looks like they have garage door type openings for the room with the bar. Delightful evening all around. read more

When I got to the restaurant it seemed promising, but I was mistaken. The service was rushed and very unorganized. It took over an hour for my food to come out, which was cold chicken tenders. They were very under cook and I think that were microwaved. This is a very promising g restaurant that might just need some time to improve but my experience was not favorable. read more

WOW! We just had an amazing dinner experience at Five & Dime. My husband and I finally gave up to boredom and house confinement and risked going out again. First time out was a disaster at a restaurant we used to love, so we were skeptical (see my recent review of Next of Kin). I'm so happy we tried again and took the risk with Five & Dime! Totally worth it! The terrace is an oasis in the pandemic, you almost feel you are at a resort in Mexico. The staff is super friendly and professional - some of them bilingual (I was able to talk to one of the bar people in Spanish and he recommended an awesome cocktail). But most importantly: they make you feel safe! They clearly have a system in place to avoid spreading the pandemic. Everyone is wearing a mask (and is wearing correctly). There's enough distance in between tables. Contact-free menu you can scan with your phone. Manager is on top of it and making sure people are served well. Food arrived fast and was delicious! Loved everything about our experience at Five & Dime and will be back. Congrats to the team running this restaurant! Outstanding work. read more

This is one of the more fancy bars in Evanston. It might be tricky to find this place if you have never been before because there is no big sign, and the entrance is essentially a flight of stairs that takes you upstairs. My group of 4 sat at a booth on a Saturday night for drinks and some food, and although the place was very crowded, we had no trouble finding an empty table. They also have a beautiful and spacious rooftop, but sadly, it was too cold for us to enjoy this awesome space. I ordered a Virtue cider and nachos. I wish they had more variety in their food options; most of the food items they offer are more like sides or shared plates; I would have eaten dinner beforehand if I had known this. Still, the nachos were very good, and the service was great! I have also been here in the daytime for a graduation party my friend threw, where he (well, his parents) rented out a party room and the rooftop. They did a great job with this event, with awesome buffet-style food and drinks that just kept on coming, as well as fun activities like gigantic jenga, ping pong, and cornhole. The rooftop was very nice overall and had some good views of downtown Evanston. While every item we ordered did taste good overall, we felt the menu was very limited in terms of entrees for what we would typically find from a bar for lunch with a lot of their menu being higher end dinner options. I think a few more lunch options would go a long way. The main issue we encountered for our lunch were the bees all over the rooftop area. The flowers on the roof were pretty to look at but were clearly bringing them around. Our table constantly had at least 3-5 bees swarming around near our food and drinks and we noticed this was happening at all of our neighboring tables as well. The waitresses didn't seem to be reacting to them at all which made me believe this is likely a continuing issue and made our relaxing Labor Day lunch a lot less enjoyable. read more

Five and Dime is an excellent first date vibe. Coworkers and I will often come for a happy hour drink as it's cute, classy and usually our students don't hang out here. The rooftop is amazing during the warmer months, where you can sit outside and enjoy a Yes Please cocktail with friends. Their frosé is also on point and I'm a big fan. I'm giving it 4 stars almost exclusively for my favorite drink, the atmosphere and the fun waiters/bartenders. They have jenga and cornhole and other games to play as well which adds to the fun atmosphere. The food is really nothing special. I much prefer to bop down stairs to Taco Diablo for some queso fundido. So I recommend sticking to cocktails upstairs and eating downstairs (same owners). read more

It's all about the rooftop here... I met a large group of approximately 10 friends for a goodbye send off tonight. It was my first time to Five & Dime, and the rooftop was absolutely amazing! Having never been to Five & Dime before, I have to admit I might have been a bit confused about the entrance. Like one of those cool tree houses with a secret trap door, that's what the entrance felt like. Enter into a pretty dark area, go up the steps, and arrive at the rooftop. Absolutely stunning on a perfect summer evening. Thought it was really crowded, i had no problems finding my friends, and I was able to find a seat without a problem. Sadly I already ate dinner before arrival, or I would have ordered one of those deliciously messy looking sandwiches (pulled pork?) with coleslaw (I'm a coleslaw addict). Excellent service! I went here for a mom's night out and we sat on the rooftop. It was a beautiful night and the ambiance was amazing and the service was good. We got some huge plates of nachos and I had the Yes Please drink. Apps and drinks were great and it wasn't overly expensive. The only downside was there weren't a ton of food choices on the menu.
