We found this place on Yelp looking for local places close to our hotel. Such a great find!! It's a cute little place with great service and great food. We got Sable fish pakoras as appetizer, biryani and vindaloo for main course along with lemon mint ginger soda and mango anise soda. The Sable fish pakoras were delicious, the fish is first smoked and then fried and served with a mint chutney. The mint chutney is the best I have had. The lemon mint ginger soda was such a great drink, the mango anise wasn't my favorite, still good. The biryani was a squid biryani with salmon, vindaloo comes with a pound of mussels and a crispy lemony bread. Both items were so good. For dessert we got a flourless chocolate ganache cake, rich and delicious. read more

This restaurant was on my list to visit in Victoria for two years before we finally made it. I was very surprised at just how small the dining room was, too. There were four of us, and the place was jam packed on a Thursday evening. They have a front window set of about 4-6 barstools at a high top table, and we were told that four customers were about to wrap up. I believe we waited about 20 minutes before we seated. Of course, we did not have reservations. As soon as we walked in, the aromas in this restaurant were incredible. Indian restaurants always have that overwhelming aura of spices from the kitchen, but Fishhook was like walking right into the middle of the kitchen. The first thing we ordered were the Koftas as an appetizer. Quite honestly, this was the menu item that took us all by surprise. I don't think I've ever had anything like this, and I actually had to chat with the chef afterward. Interesting note is that they are not made with any wheat. On top of that, they use all wild-caught local seafood. The nice-sized meatballs are served with a tasty masala curry, baguette, and the crispiest papadum you'll have to scoop up the remaining curry at the bottom of the plate. I think I could have almost eaten a whole plate of these for my meal, but there was too much else on the menu to try. My wife and I ordered two different "Daily Khatch." She got the tuna, and I got the wild salmon. Both dishes were presented like a piece of art, and I wish that I had taken some photos. After eating the appetizer, I was having an out-of-body experience from all of the spices that had in it! My dish was dark pink wild salmon simmering in masala curry and basmati rice. More papadum come with this dish as well to help you scoop, if you want to just leave the fork and spoon behind. I've never had this sort of fresh fish with an Indian dish, and the combination of flavors was absolutely perfect. My wife's tuna was equally amazing, but I'd still have to go with the salmon every time. The entire staff in this restaurant from the front host to the waitress and the kitchen were simply the best. One of the things I didn't quite pick up on when we were trying to get a table was the fact that Fishhook usually shares an open common space on the back side of the restaurant. Apparently, this allows them to have more seating in the outdoor courtyard. During our visit, that area was closed. If you plan to go, they do not take reservations. Just try to arrive either early or late, as I think that may give you a better chance of getting a table quicker. If you're in Victoria, I think this is one of the top three restaurants on the list for quality and simply uniqueness. Put it on your list! read more

There was also no depth of flavour, just drops of what looked and tasted like Sriracha. This was like a really out-of-touch Westerner's idea of Biryani. A well selection of small quick bites, Tartines which are open face sandwiches, and substantial fuller plates of a variety of seafood. I tried Fishhook's Vin'daloo'd mussels today, I was in tears of joy!! I never have a mussels dish that is served with curry/turmeric and spices so beautifully done ever before! The chunkiness of the curry soup that have coarsely finely chopped onions and other veggies to add on to the flavors alone with powerful flavorful spices, really made the curry sauce perfect with the mussels. The mussels are well plum and juicy, they are very fresh! Both the medium thickness of the soup and the fresh mussels are deliciously complimenting each other. On top of that, a lemony baguette! Have you ever eat at a place purposely zest lemon peels onto their lightly butter toasted baguette before?!? Talk about details and layering of flavors, very well planning and envision of the dish. It's not everyday that you unknowingly walk into a restaurant to find that you have completely transformed on a spiritual level when you walk out. Fish hook is that restaurant. "Fusion" usually denotes ingredient experimentation and in many cases can turn out to be failure. However, such was not the case at Fish hook. The tastes of each dish were so novel (to me at least) yet so developed and sophisticated that it seemed as if the food had stemmed from a unique tradition of its own (perhaps thanks to India's rich food culture) . Let us go down the dishes one by one: Biryani - ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. This is transcendental cooking. The dish celebrates the excellent of Indian spices, melding together umami, sweetness, sourness and saltiness with a touch of heat in perfect harmony, each bite release more and more fragrance, blossoming into an indescribable ecstasy. However, I will caveat that this is not your typical Biryani. It is more of a risotto and almost seems like curry mixed really well with rice. We ordered the salmon well don't and was still very tender. Squid was delicious and fresh as well. Daily Khatch - Not quite my cup of tea but a very delicious and interesting dish as well. It's not spicy at all and a little on the sweet side (much different than the explosive biryani). Sublime in a subtle way. It's basically just lentils (something like daal) over rice with your choice of fish with some chutney-esque dips on the side - minty and sweet - goes well with the buttery fattiness of the halibut. Chowder - don't expect clam chowder when you order this - it's only barely reminiscent of chowder. I would describe it as a mix between spicy chicken curry and chowder. Don't get me wrong, it was quite good - the heat from the spice brings out the seafood flavors very well, but also take a while to a quite the taste. Vindaloo - 1 lb of mussels may not seem that much, but this is a more than filling meal given that you have unlimited bread refills. The premise of the dish is garlic mussels soaked in a watery but spicy vindaloo curry. Mussels were super fresh and tender. Bread was grilled deliciously as well and paired well with the vindaloo. Overall 5/5: fish hook is definitely a place that should be on your checklist if your love Indian cuisine and seafood. Fantastic local brews on tap too! Wife ordered tuna melt with the clam chowder, loved the smoky flavor from the sandwich. To be honest not worth remembering. However, I ordered the Daily Khatch with salmon and I could eat that everyday, for every meal, including breakfast, for a month straight and not get sick of it. Discovered this place on Yelp because my wife and I were craving seafood. We got into Victoria late so I thought why not give this place a shot, since other Yelp reviews showed some delicious looking chowder. Quite honestly this restaurant is one of the best I've been to. It's on the smaller side but the food more than makes up for it and the it's also what give it its charm. We ordered the mussels and the Birayni. The seafood was fresh and the combination of Indian spices made it all the better. I also liked how they used traditional Indian spices and did not hold back on the level of spiciness for the North American palette. AMAZING fusion of Indian and American food. We were walking out of our hotel and wanted to eat at a place that was relatively cheap, quick, yet highly rated. We walked right in around 1pm with no waits. The restaurant is a bit small, so be aware during peak hours. Overall though, this was the PERFECT lunch spot for a quick yet quality lunch. 5/5 The ahi tuna sandwich was flavored with spices that was so unique, I will probably never find a place in the states quite like it. It had a mayonnaise-type of sweet sauce on it that complimented the flavored spices on top. 5/5 the soup was almost like a curry based, spicy soup. I don't even like spicy food but I found myself stealing bites because the flavor was that good. We were very unsure about the Victoria food scene until we tried Fishhook. We called in our order and got one of each item on the menu -- and the wait was only 15 minutes!! The chowder was so flavorful and had just the right amount of mild spice for a chilly night. The fish belly sandwich had the most amazing crisp bread. Good food, check. Good company, check. After my friend asked her coworkers where we should eat in Victoria, he said the Fish Hook, so we decided to give it a try. We were pretty exhausted aftera biking trail and this place was only about 5-10 minutes away. There's a courtyard type of dining experience in the back. Too bad it was all full, or I would have loved that experience. We were sitting at the front patio and the view was nice. As for service, the servers were attentive and nice. But I think because we sat outside, they forgot about us quite a few times when we wanted some more water. I'd have to wait until someone else decides to order to ask the server for more water. The food. This is the best part. Isn't it always? I ordered the pondicherry and it was amazing! Super flavourful and portions are absolutely huge. I wasn't able to finish it and had it for breakfast the morning of. The kebabs were packed with seafood almost like a fish ball but with all different types of seafood. Came here for dinner around 6pm with a group of six and managed to snag the last space at the long communal table that would fit us. We had an VERY good meal here, and I wouldn't hesitate to come back. Some of our favorites were the Pondicherry, seafood koftas, vindaloo seafood hotpot (with tasty lemony baguette!) and biryani with wild salmon (came with fantastic rice). The Greens+ salad with kale, quinoa arugula, pumpkin & sunflower seeds had a tasty vinaigrette. The large size ($10) was perfect for sharing, but it didn't wow us the way the other dishes did. Things I'd skip: The salmon belly tartine is very average, flavors are mild. their housemade sodas are ehh, they sound interesting but the flavors are either lacking or are artificial. They kindly offered me samples and I ended up not wanting to order anything. Beer menu is a little bit limited. Their lavender lemonade cocktail was mostly lemon and not much lavender. Service is friendly and prices are reasonable. Very good and creative cooking. read more

4 of us went to lunch/dinner there. It was good but probably won't return, more because of personal tastes. My halibut was yummy but I would probably still prefer different side dishes. My friend's food was a bit spicy for them and they weren't aware that the tuna was smoked rather than cooked so didn't meet their needs. This was recommended by the staff at our hotel. We arrived with a warning about long waits. After being told it was at least thirty minutes, we opted to sit outside on a somewhat chilly September evening. Once the wait staff realized we were outside as customers, we were able to place our orders. Our waitress was a delightful young woman from the prairies, and she attended to us quite well. My salmon kefta (patties) with their Indian-styled sauce were absolutely delicious! We also had fun miming with an American couple sitting inside watching us. Seafood with an East Indian touch Recently revisited this my favorite eating spot in Victoria. Limited seating but I've always managed to squeeze in. Went there 8 times in 10 days with various people as I wanted to try various things on the menu. Favorite: a stew which changes a bit daily in line with whats available. Both iterations I had were delicious including the one that had 26 (I counted) large fat mussels plus fish! Other favorite: the Squimp (squid/shrimp) sandwich. Vin'daloo'd Seafood Hot Pot That is all. Vacationing over the weekend in lovely Victoria, we stumbled upon this hidden diamond for dinner. My partner ordered the Salmon Belly Sandwich and I took a chance on the description (and price) of the Hot Pot. Ah-maze-ing. It was so good that I felt guilty about watching him eat the salmon sandwich while I enjoyed the aromatic and explosively flavorful hot pot! Luckily, this dish was big enough for both of us. We shared and relished all of the flavors in this bowl and awesomeness and took the sandwich to go. We then enjoyed the great salmon belly sandwich for lunch the next day in our walk about the city. Truly unique food. Excellent prices for quality seafood and highly creative food. I would give it 5 stars for that, but I'm not entirely sure that the unique food combinations worked. The menu is an interesting combination of Indian flavors with seafood (heavily French influenced). I've never had food like it anywhere. We ordered the Tuna Melt and the featured sandwich (I forget the name) but it came with your choice of fish kebabs or squid. We went with the fish kebabs. The Tuna Melt was for my son and it was simply too foodie for him. He loves traditional tuna melts. This one comes with smoked tuna (not a tunafish salad) and broccoli smash with cheese. Both the tuna and the broccoli turned him off. I thought it was a very interesting combination. The fish kebabs on the other sandwich were pretty tasty although they were a bit heavy on the coriander. It was a good portion of fish though and not much filler. The sandwich itself was quite good and came with a sweet relish. Both sandwiches were served on high quality bread. They were a bit too rich and could have used more vegetables to lighten them up, but I mostly enjoyed the flavors. We also ordered the pickled vegetable appetizer, which seemed pretty overpriced. The reason for this is that the vegetables are served with a smoked fish dip. This was by far the tastiest of all the items. For the price, it should have come with more pickled vegetables (which were amazing). There is a lot of creativity and skill that goes into this food. I definitely recommend it. read more
