Was warned London only has potatoes to offer, this pub place proved that was so wrong. Food was…read moresurprisingly good! Felt like still in New York. Lol. My favorite is the wings n sea bass in prawn butter! One of "nice things" is London does not accept tips:)))). The reason subway is 3times more expensive than in New York???

We didn't really venture too far from London proper during our recent trip to the city, but decided…read moreit was worth the time to visit The Greenwich Union for a Sunday roast. The establishment has a nice mixture of cozy and airy, which was perfect for a lazy(ish) Sunday. I hate to use this word, but I'll use it anyway (because I can't think of a better descriptor): the service here is "super" friendly, and very knowledgeable, particularly regarding the ales on tap. The barkeep gave us a few sample pours without waiting for us to ask, which we greatly appreciated. Because of that, we were more than happy with the pints we ordered. Moving on to the food: the roasts were delicious, in particular the pork loin, which was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed my roast beef as well. The Yorkshire pudding was wonderful and I might have been just as happy eating that alone for my meal, to be honest. The pub is in walking distance of the touristy areas of Greenwich, so it's easy enough to put some good food in your belly and continue on to your sightseeing, afterward.

Last night we finally got to try it. As soon as I walked in I liked the place. It's not quite your traditional looking chippy, more of a hipster take on traditional. No bad thing if you ask me. As it was our first time I thought I'd have a bit of a selection. I had whitebait for a starter, large cod and large chips to share with the missus as well as a bartered sausage, curry sauce, mushy peas and of course a couple of pickled onions. The whitebait was super fresh and amazingly crispy. Cooked to order it was still piping when I got home 20 mins later. The cod was also brilliantly fresh. The Vintage Fish pride themselves on the freshness of their fish; they get it direct from Billingsgate market. The "large" piece of fish wasn't very large so the fella behind the counter (possibly the owner) topped it up with some cod bites. The battered sausage was as you'd expect; soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside (ARMADILLOS!!). The mushy peas were classic quality and the curry sauce was probably some of the best chip shop curry sauce I've ever had. The only disappointment we had was the pickled onions. They just tasted weird. It could be they're not very nice or it could be that the ones we make at home are so much better every other pickled onion pales in comparison. The fella did throw in a free gherkin so I'll let them off. After clearing my plate I turned to the missus and said "we're definitely going there again." Enough said.

We've now had cod, plaice and haddock, all of which have received a very positive thumbs up. Not sure I can find fault with anything, staffed by very friendly guys who clearly care about product and service. Looking forward to going again soon.
