I noticed that The Vintage Fish has opened a few weeks ago, had a look at their webpage and it looked cracking and had even been officially opened by one of the local mayors!
Last night we finally got to try it. As soon as I walked in I liked the place. It's not quite your traditional looking chippy, more of a hipster take on traditional. No bad thing if you ask me.
As it was our first time I thought I'd have a bit of a selection. I had whitebait for a starter, large cod and large chips to share with the missus as well as a bartered sausage, curry sauce, mushy peas and of course a couple of pickled onions.
The whitebait was super fresh and amazingly crispy. Cooked to order it was still piping when I got home 20 mins later. The cod was also brilliantly fresh. The Vintage Fish pride themselves on the freshness of their fish; they get it direct from Billingsgate market. The "large" piece of fish wasn't very large so the fella behind the counter (possibly the owner) topped it up with some cod bites. The battered sausage was as you'd expect; soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside (ARMADILLOS!!). The mushy peas were classic quality and the curry sauce was probably some of the best chip shop curry sauce I've ever had. The only disappointment we had was the pickled onions. They just tasted weird. It could be they're not very nice or it could be that the ones we make at home are so much better every other pickled onion pales in comparison. The fella did throw in a free gherkin so I'll let them off.
After clearing my plate I turned to the missus and said "we're definitely going there again." Enough said. read more
