Hmm. I really don't give bad reviews unless the food is really bad and unfortunately this place on the warf is NOT GOOD. We got the jumbo fried shrimp with fries, fried zucchini, and calamari. The shrimp itself was decent and crunchy however, the fries were greasy, old fries. The zucchini was not edible and had a weird off putting taste. There was one person in front of us ordering so line was not busy, but many of the tables were taken. I was able to secure a table for us. There's lots of places to get fast food (good food fast not "fast food") on the wharf. We've always stopped here when we don't want to sit and get served. The cafe has seating inside (about four tables seating 4 and two tables serving 2) and a few patio tables outside. You order at a counter at the front and then wait for your number to be called. For the crowd the cafe gets, tables free up fairly fast - most people want to keep moving to other sights. All tables were full when we arrived around 12:30 but by the time we paid at the register, a table inside had freed up, yay I ordered fried calamari - no fries - and proceeded to get lemons (nice big slices), hot sauce and vinegar, napkins, forks (compostable) at their station. My calamari was ready quickly and it was delicious. The generous pieces were thick and fresh. However, I would have preferred it had been cooked longer to get more crispy even between the folds - yeah, some of the pieces were that big. Great for what it was - a greasy takeout joint in the back of the touristy wharf. If the wait times are too long at the sit down restaurants, and you just want some chowder or fried heart attacks, just come by here. Staff were wearing Abalonetti shirts from next door so I'm assuming the two places are related. About 3-4 round tables outside and some limited seating inside. Was directed next door to Abalonetti when I asked about the bathroom situation (clean bathrooms there, with a small changing table in the women's room) What we ordered: * 2 corn dogs and fries for the kids - no complaints from them. Fries were actually quite good! Long and skinny kind, not under nor overdone, not over salted, not too greasy. * clam chowder in a sourdough bowl - solid. Clammy and not too heavy on the potatoes. On the salty side but that works well for the sourdough bread bowl anyway. Bread tasted freshly cut rather than a stale top that had been sitting around all day. I had low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Food came out super fast considering the line, and the staff were pleasant and efficient. Minus one star for the dirty sauce area - just a lot of people jostling for the condiments, which is sticky jugs of ketchup and hot sauce to pour into the little plastic sauce cups, but most of the plastic cups had sauce splattered on them and there was a big bin of tartar sauce just sitting out not on ice. Such an easy stop while exploring Monterey. The staff were welcoming and the food is priced fairly compared to all the tourist traps on the wharf. We grabbed garlic fries and a clam chowder bread bowl to go. We took it with us and walked towards the aquarium on the bike trail. Plenty of picnic tables and benches to enjoy the savory food. We wanted to have some oysters before we left Monterey and decided to try this place since it was the cheapest on the pier at $1.75 per oysters. Their sign says "Fresh Oyster", but we didn't think they were fresh. Typically, when we order "Fresh" oysters, they're are still moving. The oysters were definitely not same-day caught. The outer lining of the oysters were cracking and had that white milky juice when you spoon it out. I posted a picture of it. We've been here before, but only ordered their fish and chips which were good. The portion, as mentioned in other reviews, were small but thought they were priced accordingly. You get what you pay for. Cheaper price, smaller portion. Do you really save? If you're not too hungry, this place is good so you don't spend more than you need to and waste food. We own a historical house from down the street and I often bring my daughter down to the wharf on quiet weekends to watch the sea lions and grab a bite. A bit of french fries is all that my 3 years old enjoys. Didn't want to do any sit-down restaurant and wasn't really dressed to impressed because home is only a few block away. This is a takeout place that my husband and I would usually stop or bring the friends and family whenever they are in town. This particular Saturday must've not been a great morning for this lady but as my daughter and I approached the counter, the little dark Asian lady behind the counter looked at me up and down and said, "We not open yet." No explanation. No smile. I saw no closed sign. The umbrellas were all open and out. The other tourists walked by and stared but she failed to greet them as well. I'm sadden to say the switching of ownership over the years had forced this place to become very unwelcoming. My two cents to the owner, sometimes people would rather grab a bite to eat then sit down at a restaurant. You being in a strategic spot on the wharf and also opening late in the day, you're not doing very well of a job of keeping your local customers. The food may not be so great but people come for the scenery and people here in Monterey. From another Monterey family to another, my family and our guest will venture out to find better fish and chips place. read more

*COVID-19 Review* This was the only food place where the people working here were actually wearing masks (and not putting it below their chins). I was able to peek in their kitchen and the people cooking the food were also wearing their masks properly. On top of that, the prices here were more affordable compared to the other food places around and the portions are great. The customer service here was absolutely wonderful! I ordered fish and chips. I had to get my fries replaced because after I ate the fish, I saw that there was a black piece of fuzz (probably from someone's clothing) in my fries. I told the cashier and showed her, and she apologized and put in an order for a replacement. There were more fries in there than what they initially gave me, which I appreciated. I also noticed that whenever a customer is done eating, they always disinfect the table right after. I will definitely come back here the next time I visit Old Fisherman's Wharf. read more

Nice little place to grab a quick bite to eat while you're on the wharf. During my Monterey stay, my boyfriend and I came here twice! First time we got the clam chowder and calamari and chips. It was super tasty and the fries were great. They had the same crispness as shoestring fries which I love. The chowder wasn't too overly creamy which I liked! It also has bacon in it, but you hardly taste it. The second time we stopped by, we tried the buffalo calamari and with garlic fries instead of regular fries and the fried oyster and chips. The oyster wasn't fishy at all. The garlic fries, however, were a little soggy and I wish it was tossed better in the garlic oil. My wife and I are from Santa Barbara so we see a lot of seafood places. This was one of many seafood joints along the boardwalk. Most were pricey!!! You order and pay at the counter and pick up your food and the counter. The seating was tight but ok. There were views of the marina, water and coastline.
