We decided to give it another try this last weekend. Our salads were excellent - the beet carpaccio and the caesar. But the entrees were so disappointing. The mushroom risotto in the scallops and risotto was very tasty, but the scallops themselves were not worth eating. They had been seared, but then served on the plate sitting in liquid so they were just soggy and chewy. I took them home and literally gave them to the dogs. The cod with basil pesto was similarly bad. The cod was overcooked, the pesto strangely blah, and everything was sitting on mashed potatoes so it was just mushy on top of mushy. We actually added salt at the table - something we never do - to try to make it taste better. Didn't really help, unfortunately. We tried to salvage the meal with the warm flourless chocolate cake. This was so overbaked that the ice cream couldn't save it. Cheever Tavern - please do better! We need a consistently good place in Norwell!

See my separate review of this wonderful musical performance. The Scarlet Oak Tavern is situated in an historic colonial house that has a fireplace and outdoor seating. The atmosphere here is always charming, wide plank wooden floors, cozy rooms, and plenty of them, and a charming bar. The servers are always polite and smiling. I have been here many times over the years with many different people, friends and family and it is fairly consistently wonderful. I don't recall having a bad meal here ever. There is a lovely room that has a fireplace when you first enter the establishment. It is especially nice in the winter when the fire is roaring and we have a toasty drink to make everything extra cozy. However, it is equally pleasant in May! My sister and I shared several appetizers, which together constituted a delicious meal for each of us. We ordered an appetizer called Bourbon Brown Sugar BBQ Ribs that came with four very meaty flavorful ribs. We ordered two separate sides of the delicious mashed potatoes that they serve at this establishment. We also ordered one very large crab cake appetizer we ate the crabcake first. We then placed the ribs on top of the mashed potatoes with a couple of the delicious pickles that were served with the ribs. It was absolutely scrumptious. See the photo! For dessert, I ordered a flourless Flourless Chocolate Cake with crumbled peanut brittle served with a generous scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. The cake was moist and delicious with almost a rich pudding consistency inside it contrasted amazingly well with a flavorful crunchy topping of peanut brittle and a smooth cold refreshing mound of ice cream. In a word this dessert was as maddeningly delicious as it sounds. Highly recommend!

We were first served a basket of complimentary warm cornbread with butter. Delicious! We each had a glass of red wine with our brie & carmelized onion burger. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium, as requested. Unfortunately, the service wasn't quite as good as the food. We requested side salads in lieu of fries & were not told there would be a $5 upcharge (each!). We also asked for our dressing to be on the side; it wasn't. Luckily, the salad wasn't heavily dressed so it was edible. The craisons & fried shallots were a nice touch. I had an Affogato for dessert & it was brought out with a candle & a "happy birthday" chocolate disc. My friend was charged twice on her credit card for this meal. We were told the extraneous charge had been removed at the restaurant, but it wasn't. My friend had to resolve it with her credit card company the next day. Atmosphere & food - 5 stars. Service - 3 stars.

As a bartender and server, he was so attentive and on top of everything. We kept commenting on how effortlessly he took care of us while being so warm and personable. His personality was the best part. Some people just have a light about them, and Ben is absolutely one of those people. He made us feel welcome and cared for, and his wonderful attitude made the whole experience that much better. Service plays such a big part in how much I enjoy a restaurant, and this was a 10 out of 10. I would go back to Square Café just to be taken care of by Ben again, whether at the bar or at a table. If you're visiting, ask for him! He's phenomenal, and I hope the restaurant knows what a gem they have.

I had multigrain bread with avocado spread and goat cheese and two soft boiled eggs and strawberries with balsamic vinegar on top. She had the same, but her bread was sourdough and she had a regular arugula. I do not like arugula, but this is just a personal taste preference. We each had a cup of hot tea with honey, and a dash of milk. We also had an icy glass of cranberry juice, cut with club soda and a wedge of lime. So very refreshing.

The avocado toast was served on delicious homemade multigrain bread, topped with fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, and just the right amount of balsamic. The breakfast sandwich was spot-on, but the homemade muffins were the star of the show, served with butter and strawberry jam. It's always a good idea to get some to take home! Next time, we might come for lunch.
