Avoid this company like the plague. They have cold called me every week for the past six weeks-- once on a Sunday morning! Each time I tell them I don't want any work done at my house, that the calls are bothering my wife who is ill, and to please take me off their call list. A week passes, and they call again. We also had First Step Builders, Inc. fix our leaky roof. After all the rain this past season we discovered that our roof was leaking. First Step Builders, Inc. was already at the house working on our bathrooms so Yogi came out and got onto the roof and discovered that most of our tiles were loose and the tar paper needed to be replaced. Yogi had one of his other teams come out and within 4 days the roofing job was completed. We appreciated how fast he was able to get the roof done as more rain had been forecasted. read more

The first project they did was helping me create a running river in my front yard. It is perfect and absolutely gorgeous. They is a bit of a leak somewhere and Yogev is amazing in helping to identify it and fix it even after 1 year! The second project was a remodel of my kitchen! It really turned out amazing! I love it! Once again when I had an issue with the filtered water stopping, Yogev stopped over and fixed it fast. The third project was the roof and A/C! We had a major kitchen renovation project which involved stripping the space to the studs, installing a tile feature above a fireplace, new cabinets, new countertops, a new range and hood, new lighting, extending a soffit, and installing a second sink for prep (which meant breaking into the concrete slab and replacing flooring). Workers were specifically told to preserve the existing floor, which was relatively new. Demolition went fine, as did installation of the new cabinets when they arrived. Problems began with the tile at the fireplace. The workers were extremely sloppy and spattered material onto the black metal frame and glass doors of the fireplace and never cleaned it up. The workers had clearly never installed a range hood like the new one and initially had no idea how to set up a dual-blower hood. I had to read the instruction to them to get it done right. They were about to install the hood about a foot off-center until I pointed out the true center line they should have used. The person who was supposed to extend the soffit bought materials and never actually did any work on the soffit. It was finished by other workers who found a way to botch the job. They waited too long to install a new HVAC vent, installed it crooked, and then had to come back three times to get the patch and paint right. They never straightened the vent.The patch over the new plumbing was not high enough and the flooring over it gave way and had to be replaced. Tile installers evidently had little experience and lacked the correct tools to install a mosaic backsplash on a long wall. The tile job was thoroughly botched and the only way to fix if would have been to tear it out and start over. Instead, they replaced a few areas where the tiles were obviously set incorrectly and tried to hide crooked lines at the ceiling and around the hood and corners with more and more grout, sometimes not even using the original color. It was an epic failure. One weekend day, one of the workers unexpectedly showed up with a friend and let themselves in through an unlocked patio door. I told them I wasn't expecting anyone that day and after pretending to show his friend the work he had done, they quickly left. One can speculate about their motives. As the job seemingly neared completion, it was impossible to get workers to come finish items on our punch list, one of which was cleaning the floor they had thoroughly soiled with paint drippings, concrete dust, and wall texture coating. After they missed a drop-dead date, we hired another builder to finish the job and correct the mistakes. That included ripping out the entire backsplash and redoing it from scratch. The new builder finished in a matter of days work we had been trying for weeks to get completed. This project was fraught with delays, shoddy work, needless rework, and frustration. I strongly discourage anyone from even considering using this company for anything. read more

I would be very cautious in hiring this company for a roofing job. Their verbal estimate was close to double the other estimates that we received. They never sent me an estimate in writing which they promised to do. They would only give a 2-year warranty on their labor which I don't understand because if they do the job right, they should have enough confidence to give a warranty for 10-15 years. read more

Trust is never easy to gain. Without a referral, I cold called First Step Builders to come to my home and assess the condition of my roof. I had lived in the home for over 20 years and was more than aware of the roof's problem areas but didn't divulge anything about them. Yogi, the contractor/owner, evaluated the roof (composite) and gave me his opinion on what needed to be done. It was consistent with my sense of what needed to be done to stop the roof from leaking. He gained my trust when the estimate was for only a section of my home's roof and not the expected "re-doing the whole roof" upsell. A month later, it finally rained all day. The day which would prove whether the workmanship on the roof was done correctly and my instincts on Yogi's opinions were correct--there were no leaks. Moving forward, I think I can expect to have Yogi's expertise/evaluations to be honest and with the intention of giving a clear understanding in any home improvement situation.
