Get rid of Steve We recd a cold call from him and hired him to redo our only bathroom In order to do so we had to move out What was supposed to be a 3-4 week project ended up being 8 weeks And Steve was very difficult to deal with He gave me wrong measurements for vanity size ( twice) He gave me wrong measurements for tile He was so hard to deal with that at one point towards end of project we asked him to leave our home as he was yelling at us and we had to dial 911 before he would leave Don't hire first step builders unless you are assured you won't have to deal with Steve read more

Putting in a review on behalf of my Dad. Yogi and team redid the roof and painted the exterior of my Dad's Eichler home in Marin this summer. My Dad says everyone from the Project Manager down to the hands-on workers were respectful and friendly. The work itself got started and was completed in a timely manner. The paint job was spectacularly clean and finished off well. I was there during some of the construction and had a similar impression. read more

A complicated install of a new shower in a non-standard-sized space, done to perfection. These guys are respectful, friendly, efficient and most of all extremely competent, and with real design flair. The result is beautiful and considerably better than I would have thought possible. They were not the cheapest quote, but I am very glad I went with them. Yogi is a master of his trade. read more

Avoid this company like the plague. They have cold called me every week for the past six weeks-- once on a Sunday morning! Each time I tell them I don't want any work done at my house, that the calls are bothering my wife who is ill, and to please take me off their call list. A week passes, and they call again. Any company that encourages its employees to continue making calls like this is unethical, untrustworthy, and likely does shoddy/illegal work. read more

Can you stop calling me unsolicited every day? If you can do that, I will remove my one-star rating. I used First Step Builders for a quote on concrete work, but the price was significantly higher than expected. I searched around and got a quote that was half the price. I contacted the First Step-referred business and let them know I was not interested. I received a call at work yesterday, but I hung up because it interrupted a phone meeting I was in. I received another call today and asked them to remove me from their call list. The caller hung up. read more

EXCELLENT. Yogi and his team did a stellar job on my mom's kitchen renovation. High quality materials and top notch workmanship. Explained to us and talked through our various design ideas to come up with a final look that was classic with some modern touches. Our whole family (and friends that have visited) love the new look and we get compliments all the time. Highly recommend! read more

We had to demolish our beloved backyard wooden gazebo. The contractor, Yogi, was super kind and made helpful suggestions. Yogi was cordial, professional and explained the scope of the work to be done very clearly. They cleaned up throughout the entire time they were on the job. Yogi called often and stayed in touch by phone and text messages. Smart guy! read more

We also had First Step Builders, Inc. fix our leaky roof. After all the rain this past season we discovered that our roof was leaking. First Step Builders, Inc. was already at the house working on our bathrooms so Yogi came out and got onto the roof and discovered that most of our tiles were loose and the tar paper needed to be replaced. Yogi had one of his other teams come out and within 4 days the roofing job was completed. We appreciated how fast he was able to get the roof done as more rain had been forecasted. read more

The first project they did was helping me create a running river in my front yard. It is perfect and absolutely gorgeous. They is a bit of a leak somewhere and Yogev is amazing in helping to identify it and fix it even after 1 year! The second project was a remodel of my kitchen! It really turned out amazing! I love it! Once again when I had an issue with the filtered water stopping, Yogev stopped over and fixed it fast. The third project was the roof and A/C! It was all done with a few weeks which included the permits! 4th project is building a shed from the ground up. It is amazing and exactly what I wanted and needed. Next project is the ADU! All of this speaks volumes of how much I love their work. I have never used the same contractor for any of my projects! read more

We worked with Yogi in Kitchen and Bathroom remodeling. Our first meeting with Yogi was very nice. He's very helpful in figuring out details. Yogi did a great job of decking in and always stood available for any questions we had during the process. His team was professional and we appreciated that they continued wearing a mask at all times while on the job. We are very very happy and satisfied on the job. I'm really happy with the results of our first remodel. read more

We had a major kitchen renovation project which involved stripping the space to the studs, installing a tile feature above a fireplace, new cabinets, new countertops, a new range and hood, new lighting, extending a soffit, and installing a second sink for prep (which meant breaking into the concrete slab and replacing flooring). Workers were specifically told to preserve the existing floor, which was relatively new. Demolition went fine, as did installation of the new cabinets when they arrived. Problems began with the tile at the fireplace. The workers were extremely sloppy and spattered material onto the black metal frame and glass doors of the fireplace and never cleaned it up. The workers had clearly never installed a range hood like the new one and initially had no idea how to set up a dual-blower hood. I had to read the instruction to them to get it done right. They were about to install the hood about a foot off-center until I pointed out the true center line they should have used. The person who was supposed to extend the soffit bought materials and never actually did any work on the soffit. It was finished by other workers who found a way to botch the job. They waited too long to install a new HVAC vent, installed it crooked, and then had to come back three times to get the patch and paint right. They never straightened the vent. The patch over the new plumbing was not high enough and the flooring over it gave way and had to be replaced. Tile installers evidently had little experience and lacked the correct tools to install a mosaic backsplash on a long wall. The tile job was thoroughly botched and the only way to fix if would have been to tear it out and start over. Instead, they replaced a few areas where the tiles were obviously set incorrectly and tried to hide crooked lines at the ceiling and around the hood and corners with more and more grout, sometimes not even using the original color. It was an epic failure. One weekend day, one of the workers unexpectedly showed up with a friend and let themselves in through an unlocked patio door. I told them I wasn't expecting anyone that day and after pretending to show his friend the work he had done, they quickly left. One can speculate about their motives. As the job seemingly neared completion, it was impossible to get workers to come finish items on our punch list, one of which was cleaning the floor they had thoroughly soiled with paint drippings, concrete dust, and wall texture coating. After they missed a drop-dead date, we hired another builder to finish the job and correct the mistakes. That included ripping out the entire backsplash and redoing it from scratch. The new builder finished in a matter of days work we had been trying for weeks to get completed. This project was fraught with delays, shoddy work, needless rework, and frustration. I strongly discourage anyone from even considering using this company for anything. read more

I hired First Step Builders to remodel my kitchen. These guys did a fantastic job! They helped bring design ideas to life and found solutions for functionality, storage and accessibility problems. From the onset, Yogi came in with idea after idea. He went into my head and pulled out what I wanted. They have a team where people specialize in specific tasks and they project manage the site to make sure the work is done. They were at my house daily checking on progress and quality assurance. It helped that all the workers are polite, clean and timely. I'm sad to end the job with them because I enjoyed hanging out with Yogi, Eli and the team so much. If you want quality work and an end product you're happy with, I highly recommend First Step Builders. read more

I would be very cautious in hiring this company for a roofing job. Their verbal estimate was close to double the other estimates that we received. They never sent me an estimate in writing which they promised to do. They would only give a 2-year warranty on their labor which I don't understand because if they do the job right, they should have enough confidence to give a warranty for 10-15 years. read more

Fantastic experience with First Step Builders! My elderly mom who lives with us was having a tougher and tougher time taking showers in her older bathroom. She has a nice big private suite in our house. Decided a walk in tub/shower would greatly improve her quality of life. Yogev came out, gave us quote and had great foresight what would work. A complete bathroom remodel. We agreed. After paperwork was signed, demolition quickly commenced. Wow. It was much bigger job than I could have imagined but these folks are pros. I'll let the pics speak for themselves. My mom now takes showers anytime she wants in complete confidence. Fantastic work. Highly recommended contractor. read more

My Dad found First Step Builders looking for a contractor to put in artificial turf for the family home. Yogi, one of the owners, came to the house and spent many hours with him explaining differences in turf and recommendations. Within a few days, the team of workers were working hard in the blazing Sun and did a phenomenal job. We ordered a higher grade of turf which does not absorb the heat as much. The dogs love laying on the turf even on a hot day. All work was completed within 1 week, would highly recommend this company. read more

Trust is never easy to gain. Without a referral, I cold called First Step Builders to come to my home and assess the condition of my roof. I had lived in the home for over 20 years and was more than aware of the roof's problem areas but didn't divulge anything about them. Yogi, the contractor/owner, evaluated the roof (composite) and gave me his opinion on what needed to be done. It was consistent with my sense of what needed to be done to stop the roof from leaking. He gained my trust when the estimate was for only a section of my home's roof and not the expected "re-doing the whole roof" upsell. A month later, it finally rained all day. The day which would prove whether the workmanship on the roof was done correctly and my instincts on Yogi's opinions were correct--there were no leaks. Moving forward, I think I can expect to have Yogi's expertise/evaluations to be honest and with the intention of giving a clear understanding in any home improvement situation. A partnership built on trust. read more
