So much work left un done. like the replacement of the stairs leading to my attic after a house fire. supposed to have the same size 2 windows in the attic they put in 2 different ones. including a tiny one you can even put a window fan. a broken window they broke during repair and was supposed to send someone out to fix the counter balances and window screens they took with them a year later all this is still broken or missing. read more

1 star because the initial estimate was detailed and thorough. 1 star because the work did get done. -1 star because the work was not always to the standard we expected. E.g. when painting a head height shelf they just painted what they could reach and what they thought we could see instead of getting on a step and doing it all properly. We had to ask for several things to be re-done. As far as I can tell, FGS gives the work out to the cheapest sub-contractors it can find and so the skill level of the people actually doing the work is very hit or miss. -1 star because the project management was lackadaisical. E.g. when they caused another leak (while repairing after a leak) and I notified the project manager he simply said "thanks for letting me know" instead of "I'm really sorry, what do you need?" -1 star because dealing with the office was awful. When we descoped the project a bit, all sorts of extra charges appeared and we had a real struggle getting back our money on the work not performed. Our experience with FGS was very disappointing; hopefully yours will be better. read more

First General Services installed a new roof on our home. 14 months later, wind ripped off several sections of shingles. (All other roofs in the neighborhood were fine.) The shingle manufacturer, Tamko, determined that the shingles had not been installed per their instructions, which are printed on every package of shingles. So, Tamko's warranty related to wind damage was void at installation--forever. Two men from First General arrived unscheduled and unannounced to fix the roof. We were leaving on vacation. They finished after we left. Two years later, wind ripped off a second area of shingles--about 21 square feet. (Again, all other roofs in the neighborhood were fine.) First General's office staff was great: "We can't just keep repairing the roof. We need to install it right." A First General estimator found more loose shingles: "I'd like to see a new roof up there." First General supervisor: The labor/installation warranty doesn't transfer to a home's new owner. (We bought the house two months after installation.) Supervisor would not send a copy of that warranty, then agreed to send it to satisfy our BBB complaint; never received. Per supervisor, a subcontractor installed the roof. The subcontractor being anonymous, FGS's name is associated with the installation. We hired a different company to repair the second instance of wind damage. Ripped shingles are jagged and dense. When they blow off, they fly far. We're concerned they'll hit something--or someone. When we sell the house, we'll have to disclose these "wind events" and that parts of Tamko's warranty is void, per Tamko, due to improper installation. It's likely that we and First General have the same goal--a worry-free roof and positive reviews--and could identify the same root cause: the subcontractor. As it is, we have a roof that's subject to wind events (and liabilities), a void manufacturer warranty, and an obligation to disclose these issues at sale. And in balance, First General Services has this negative review. read more

We can't say enough wonderful things about FGS! Darick did such an amazing job assuring us by constant communication and sending videos as well as pictures of the restoration of our main floor hardwood repair. Darick is by far the best project manager that we have ever dealt with. He must be attached to his phone because we were ALWAYS able to reach him when we had any questions. This has hands down been the absolute worst professional experience of my entire life! Run as far and as fast as you can away from this company and find someone else because I would not recommend first general to my worst enemy if you pointed a gun at my head. Our home was broken into and completely destroyed. I thought that would be the traumatic part but what these contractors put me through was far worse. USAA sent them out to start on our claim and I really wish I would have done more research. At the time I was so emotionally drained that I just went with it thinking usaa has always provided great service and I would never think they would have selected such a terrible company. The initial estimation process started off fine and as soon as my project manager, Erin Tohill was assigned things quickly went down hill. I was on my initial call with him for over two hours listening to him talk in circles as he was unable to answer any of my direct questions and let me know that everything I had been told thus far by Todd, the estimator, was a lot of fluff to keep me happy but he was there to tell me how things were really going to go. From there he proceeded to jerk me around, pawn off his work on me- like sourcing items for the job, disrespect me and my home, have a high school level of drama when asked a direct question and was unable to complete any of the necessary tasks to get my project going. When it all got to a point that was unsustainable I had to request a new project manager or move on to a different company. I was assigned a new project manager, Darick Maes, who I was assured was the total opposite of Erin. Initially he was. He was very PC with all of his responses and seemed to be a more straight forward and on top of it personality. We delayed my project and pushed it out to ensure everything would be here on time since Erin didn't order certain items in time for them to not be on a delay. I was assured up and down that everything would be here so that all the work could be completed in the two weeks that we were forced to pack up and move out of our home. That was the story I got all the way up until the day they moved us out. That night at 6pm after everything was moved I was notified by Darick that roughly 40% of the work would not be completed because the items were in fact not here as previously promised. I was also told at least 100 times that USAA only gave them 60 days to complete the project once work began which is why they refused to do any work and we sat in a shattered home for 6+ months. The work began in April when we moved out and was not completed until January. None of this was caused by covid delays but rather lie after lie from Darick and his inability to do his job effectively. Had I not continually followed up on every single item, I would still be waiting for this to be completed. Darick offered me a $500 gift card in exchange for not leaving them a review which just goes to show how desperate they were to try and cover up their mistakes. It definitely seems as though they do not care for or help their insurance customers in the same way they would another paying client because they get the money up front and then they don't really care how or when things get completed. I will not go into all of the horrific details of this experience but all I can say is do your research and run as far and as fast as you can away from this company. read more

Our experience with First General (FGS) was one of the BEST remodeling and construction experiences we have ever had. Out general contractor, Darick Maes, was a true professional. We speak from experience, having done several remodels and hundreds of new construction in the US and also in France. Mr. Maes, kept strict control over our job, which included, drywall replacement, taping, texturing and painting, baseboard replacement, floor tile replacement, wood floor refinishing and miscellaneous plumbing and electrical and moving and storage. Every workman sent out to our house was of the highest quality possible. They were professional and hard working. Plus, EVERYBODY at FGS was friendly and focused. My experience with this company was very unprofessional. I'll explain. After accepting a extensive Contract proposal From this company to completely remodel a rental property, to expound, we want you to do the job. They required us to wait 3 1/2 weeks to be assigned a project manager. Which we were willing to do. We met with him with questions to fine-tune the project. He spent three hours with us, me and my mother and my sister and brother-in-law. We finished the meeting in agreement on everything. He was to finalize the contract and proposal with the changes within a few days and start the project. That was Tuesday afternoon and late in the day the following Friday he called my elderly mother and said that his company didn't want to do the project. We were stunned, at this point we had waited a month for this company to get their act together and show up. But we were willing. But to get turned down like that, just like that. I called Christine the office manager to call me back and she didn't. The project manager finally called me back on Monday. I asked him why they had made this decision. He was in a hurry and didn't want to talk to me. But I pressed him and he impatiently told me that he basically he met with his company and they did the pros and cons of this project and it wasn't worth it to them. One of the reasons was they had to underbid the project by $50,000 which makes no sense. We had four other bids and all of the contractors are standing by there basic price knowing there might be some additions but no more than 10%. The second reason was he didn't want to be accountable to three of us in the family and I explained that we told him at the meeting he would only be answering to my mother. He said yeah but she lives an hour away you live next-door and mumbled something else I couldn't understand. It made no sense. He was uncomfortable that I was writing down his answers, I was simply doing it so I could convey this information to my mother and my sister. It's really put us in a bad position, put the project a month behind what it could've been. I was a contractor for 20 years and would never of put people in this position. I can understand a company not wanting to do a project. But I can't understand saying they would do it, make you wait a month for them to show up, and then pull out. read more

We utilized FGS to mitigate and repair water damage in our basement theater room. FGS was recommended through our insurance company, USAA. FGS did a fabulous job from start to finish. Darick was our project manager and he was always available to answer questions and coordinate the work of their employees. The work crew was led by Elias who was very knowledgeable on the entire project. The water leak occurred in the ceiling and caused damage to the walls and trim. We had a custom paint job in the theater room and Elias worked tirelessly to get the colors looking just right. The workers always showed up on time and made sure to protect the other rooms adjacent to the theater room. I was very pleased with the final product which essentially put our theater room back to the way it was before the water leak. The pricing was consistent with what I was quoted prior to the start of the project. I would highly recommend First General Services. read more

Two giant trees fell in high wind and crushed my roof on Christmas day. USAA insurance contacted First General Services. What a professional, conscientious and terrific company they turned out to be. They have a good system in place for super easy communication. You know exactly what's happening and when. They went the extra mile to get an engineer to look at structural soundness and did a beautiful job of securing the house against weather, then replacing joists, roof and interior damage. Inside, they put down plastic wrap everywhere needed so that no dust went anywhere and the carpets stayed clean . Every single person I dealt with was friendly and easy to communicate with. Having your house busted open in December is super stressful, and FGS honestly took all the stress away and got the repairs done well and quickly. Thank you!! read more

An insurance claim for hail damage (roof repair mostly) took 14 months to complete. They had consistent poor communication internally and externally. They could not coordinate with my tenant an myself. It was always one or the other and several times neither. It took 3 on-site estimates just to get started, eating my and my tenant's time. They agreed to replace the fan cover on the air-source heatpump (similar to AC condenser) ASAP on 4 separate occasions and did not actually complete that for 12 months. Approximately 7 months into the project they completely covered the heatpump in winter. This could have overheated the pump and would have left my tenant with no heat. The new back door took 2 months of coordination to get caulk around it. read more

The work completed is top notch, you'd never even know there was a flood in our basement and the new roof looks great. All communication with FSG was friendly and clear. I was not happy with the contractor's that First General hired. I had to clean up trash (nails, roof tiles, metal) throughout the job. they send a team to come clean up the yard and they were here for 5-6 minutes and I could still find nails and debris. The gutter company removed the gutters on my neighbors house, didn't say anything to them and then started working on my house! On the roof you could see the heads of nails, the caulking around the swamp cooler and all was sloppy. some of the roof tiles were defective and had to be replaced. They have one employee that put in a solar tube for me, he is very good and fixed the contractors mistakes. Overall, just not impressed with First General and this is the third roof I have had replaced in the last five years so I have some experience with the process and roofing companies. read more

The second time when I had them remodel my parents basement and I'm both occasions they did a great job. The last thing we needed was additional stress and First General worked hard to alleviate any. There is nothing worse than coming home to a flooded basement for a SECOND time. Fortunately we had FGS who came in. They responded quickly with guys and equipment. They even identified the problem that the prior plumber failed to repair and install the pipe fitting incorrectly. They took pictures, documented everything and did a great job on all the repairs.
