I own a few investment properties and one needed a new heater. I called my old vendor who tried to take advantage of our relationship by dramatically overcharging me. Leo, at First Choice returned my call from his vacation to help me. Where the other company, quoted me $20,000 for a 2-ton carrier split system and said I needed to replace both parts of the split even though the inside part was only 6-years old. Leo quoted me $7,200 for the split system but said the inside unit may not need replacing. If it did not, the price is 5,200. It turns out the $5,200 option was all that was needed. The work was done quickly, they communicated affectively so I could coordinate with my tenant and made the whole process very easy for me. Our previous HVAC was at its end of life after 30+ years, so we shopped around and First Choice was very highly recommended to us by family and friends. Mike and Leo took great care of us. We discussed various options for the complete replacement, and ultimately they proposed a very good heat pump system for outside, with new air mover inside, and replace our somewhat ancient attic ducting. And their price was very reasonable. They came out and did the entire job in one day. They laid out plastic to protect floors and carpet, they cleaned up nicely after the work was done. This company gets my highest recommendation! We had a new HVAC installed in 2021 by First Choice. We chose them basically because they seemed honest and came in with the lowest price. However, we got amazing service throughout the entire installation process which included having to get permits from the city for installation. We've been very happy with the unit we got. Today, they earned their 5th star! In the middle of an epic heat wave our AC went out yesterday. Fearing the worst, I couldn't find any info on who installed the unit until I found a cryptic note in my phone's contact list, "Leo AC". I called the number and Leo actually answered the phone, on a Sunday! He tried to help me problem solve the issue, but ultimately we determined that he needed to come out. I dealt directly with Mike, I think he's the owner. I had an older system with the old type of Freon that went bad, The compressor died outside. I had multiple companies come out and give me quotes in excess of $5000, stating that I need to replace the entire system because of the old coolant. Mike give me options either to replace the entire system for significantly less than the competition. In the end he ended up repairing the old machine for a good price and of great value to me since this was a rental unit. I would highly recommend him, his guys came in and out in a matter of couple hours and took care of everything, cleaned up after themselves, it just seemed like an easy, no hassle transaction. Nightmare contractor that sued me for final payment although he never completed the job! (His own attorney said he was wrong and made him undo the lien and litigation). After inspection of my old unit, electrical, gas, pad size, ductwork etc., Leo quoted me a total price to install the package unit I specified. Wasn't the cheapest, but reasonable. Leo seemed more knowledgeable than most. After comparing 4 vendors I called him to let him know I would like to sign a contract. Leo met with me, but his contract was far too vague. I pointed out details that needed to be included in writing: installation and completion dates; final payment due after passing inspection, etc. He pleasantly wrote in several clarifications that I requested. I signed and handed over my deposit. They showed up on the correct day, swapped out the unit on the 3rd story roof and never interacted with me nor entered my home. Things seemed to be in proper, working order, but for the wrong amp breaker. My electrical panel is inside my home. Leo had to enter my home to change the breaker, but he never did so. Instead, he made FALSE REPRESENTATIONS TO BUILDING & SAFETY (B&S) to obtain a final on the permit and collect money without ever fulfilling the terms of the contract. When he refused to provide and change the breaker, as required in the contract and by law, I contacted B&S and they came out to do an inspection. First Choice flunked and the permit was "unfinaled". His scam didn't work. B&S wrote it up and notified him. Did he comply with B&S, follow code or complete his contractual obligations? NO. Instead, he put a mechanic's lien on my property and proceeded with suit. After a couple of conversations with his attorney, they dropped the suit and gave me a credit sufficient to have the electrical completed by a reputable, licensed electrician. If you don't care about your safety, wasting lots of your time, being in violation of the law or getting what you pay for- go with First Choice. Nightmare contractor!! read more

I had them come out last year to do an annual service on my Air Conditioners. This was there first visit because a friend said they were good. The tech Leo said that he had to add a pound of freon. My six year old unit had never leaked before. He installed my own filters that I gave him. He charged me $439 for the service which I told him was excessive for what he had done. He said that was the standard price. This year I had West Coast AC come & do the annual service. They said my system was in perfect condition & never had a leak. They charged $55 for the service. Scheduled an appointment with them. They knew I didn't live onsite but they desired me to be there since they charged COD. I agreed to be there for a 12-2 appointment. The guy showed up two hours late with no heads up. In 5 minutes, he deduced it was a bad starter solenoid. Told me it was $445.00 to replace and he had one with him. Twice, he said he was saving me money as most people would have replaced the motor ($850.00). 8 times he told me I should change my unit as it's over 40 years old - it is not near that old btw, for replacement cost of $5,600. Not ready for that, I agreed to the repair, sadly. Within five minutes he had it replaced. Literally unplugging three wires and connecting the new one up. He said he checked the refrigerant level but I never saw him take gauges on the roof (required to check refrigerant level.). I looked up later and the part cost $20.00 on amazon. I had a large project done on my house. Not "new construction," per se, but it felt that way, as it involved installing a variable speed heat pump in the attic, with brand new ducting, vents, outdoor condenser, etc. The more I researched, the more I realized how involved/stressful this job was, and so I really wanted an HVAC pro who not only knew what he was doing but would be someone whom I could work with for a few days if not a week while a crew was cutting holes in my ceiling and running electrical and refrigerant lines all over the place. Just like ordering a surgeon to rip you open, I wanted someone with steady heads, so to speak. I had several estimates, mostly from big companies with big logos and even bigger overheads. I even had the one-man-band type HVAC guy take a look. Nothing wrong with either choice. In a Goldie Locks way, though, I wanted something in between. And luckily, I chose right. Mike is top notch. He came recommended. He's not only knowledgeable, experienced and confident, he's also just a cool guy. I think we all know that personality is the most important trait when it comes to hiring someone. Also, Mike's ridiculously punctual (which is rare); he stuck around to supervise the crew and was always avail for my questions/concerns. His crew was also great; clean, respectful, etc. The work looks clean and totally professional. New A/C works beautifully. Overall, extremely satisfied. One last thing -- if anyone's considering a heat pump, it's pretty amazing. My upstairs feels like a department store, and I don't mean that it's freezing. My wife and I don't like super cold A/C. It's quiet, and the air feels soft and mellow, and so after a while you don't realize it's on until you walk outside. It doesn't have that blast on/blast off feeling of the old school stuff. The air conditioning/heating system work really well and we are pleased with the outcome. Mike was always calm, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. What started out as a bad experience when our thirteen year old central air conditioning went out turned into a really good experience thanks to First Choice. Their estimate was fair and the work they did wasa bsolutely top notch. All our options were explained to us clearly, there were no silly "add on" costs, and the work was completed on the day promised. When their installers left it was as if no one had been there except it was cool again! They had to cut and remove shelving in our closet which leads to the attic to be able to get the coil up there. Not only did they put everything back together so you would not have known they did this, there was not a word about an extra charge for their additional labor. Pleasant and well spoken. He performed a detailed estimate service call for $65 which is cheaper than the competition. This would be deducted from the repair. However, his repair quote was $350 parts and labor to replace a capacitor solenoid. This parr is located on the outside of AC unit connected to three wires and attached by a bracket. Easy access and replacement. I got a second quote at $195. I paid First Choice $65 and took the receipt. The information he wrote down on the estimate was illegible so I had to call him 10 minutes later for clarification as to the part needing replacement. He didn't remember and in the end I had to take my central AC unit apart, photograph the capacitor and text it to the next repairman. He is a good guy, but i wouldn't call him again read more

My wife and I live in Camarillo and our home did not have a/c, which is common for the area. We decided to add a/c, and we are very happy with the installation from First Choice. We worked with the owner, Leo and he helped us choose the type of condenser and filter from the vast range of options (we got the high-end pureair filter). His prices were lower than Costco, and the 5 other estimates we received. Some of the other hvac outfits were so 'sales-y" and slick, it was awkward to have them in my house. Vastly easier to work with Leo, we got facts, he explained the process (which for us was more complex bc we didn't have the existing infrastructure for a/c) everything made sense and we had a clear plan and expectations. First choice also referred us to an asbestos removal company to rip out our original ducting, we saved a lot this way too, and I'm glad they advised us to replace the crappy ducts, plus they gave us a great deal on the new duct install. I am very particular about how work is done on my home, and I was impressed with the installation crew, the guys were professional, respectful of my home, and I could tell they really know the trade and they did quality work. For our project we re-located our return air intake so it could be enlarged, which made for quieter operation. We also decided to move the furnace to the attic, (rather than the hall closet location), this was a huge job, I couldn't believe how hard the crew had to work to get this freakin thing in the attic. So we basically gained a new storage closet in our little 1700ft house, so that was cool, and now it's extra quiet when the unit is running. Overall I had no complaints (rare for me), we upgraded our thermostat to wifi enabled, and everything is new and high efficiency. our utilities have dropped, and our air is cleaner because we have the strongest filter available. Our heater failed over a year ago, not a big issue, but then the Air Conditioner section of this Magic Chef Roof Top Unit couldn't keep up with the heat. I contacted 1st Choice from a google search (sorry yelp) and got an estimate. I received a rough order of magnitude estimate from my description of the existing unit and the location. Scheduled a walkdown/inspection with Mike Gerts which went off without a hitch. Received his recommendations, he is pro Lennox and I had no real depth of knowledge in the different residential brands and went with his recco. The process was easy, amicable, and comfortable. We had access issues to work around and a date was set. The crew showed up 30 minutes early and began prepping. The old unit was out and ready for the crane to pick it before Mike showed up and the crane was set. All on schedule. The street sweepers cleared out and the crane had the new unit on the roof and the old off inside of an hour. Two trees had to be avoided and with a bit of luck we had ideal weather. An all day job took jsut about 4 hours start to finish. No messing around, everyone was well rehearsed in their roles and the installation is very clean. The unit runs quiet and pumps out the cool air like nobody's business. Mike recommended a different style of return air damper to cut down on air flow noise, I wouldn't have bothered otherwise but that difference is noticeable and I am pleased with the decision. If you're considering any service from this company, do not set high expectations. I am sharing my honest review below hoping that it will help someone else avoid the stress and betrayal we felt as a result of our interactions with First Choice Heating & Air. Our A/C unit broke during the middle of the week in the middle of a heat wave. First Choice was a referral from our neighbor. They sent out Mike G. to come by our house and give us an estimate. He was very nice and out of all the people we had out to give us an estimate, I liked him the best. He sat down with me and my husband and gave us all the details of what his estimate included. My husband & I decided to go with him the same day. We called him and he came right back to create the work order. He mentioned a financial promotion Lennox was having for 18 months, same as cash. So we opted to select promo & Mike got the lender on the phone immediately. We provided our info and we were approved on the spot. Mike explained that we'll get an email from the lender with a link to complete the financing paperwork - a process I am very familiar with as we've recently had home improvement projects that had a similar process. It was Saturday, during a heat wave and Mike knew we were miserable. He said that if he could get our unit installed on Tuesday, he would but more realistically, it would be Wednesday. He said if he didn't hear from us before then, that he'd see us Weds at 9am. That was the last time we heard from Mike. When no one showed up on Weds morning, my husband called Mike and Mike told him the thought we decided not to go with them!!! Um, what?!?! Mike told my husband that they never received the financial paperwork from the lender and so he assumed we'd changed our minds. Never mind the fact that we signed a work order and had expectations set & agreed upon for Weds morning. Mike claimed that he left my husband a voicemail (my husband did not receive a missed call OR voicemail, nor did Mike try me on my phone), Needless to say, we were quite upset. When I told my neighbor, who had referred us to First Choice, what happened, he said he was going to call Leo, the guy that worked on his house. After speaking with my neighbor, Leo DID call my husband and left a message (this time, there really WAS a message). I called Leo back and he had the AUDACITY to blame the lender as the reason they didn't show up. He said they never received confirmation that we completed the financing paperwork. There was a lot more back and forth that I will spare you. The bottom line was neither Leo or Mike took any ACCOUNTABILITY for leaving us high and dry after they made a commitment to us, IN WRITING. Even if Mike really had called my husband - we're about to spend THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS with your company and we're not even worth a second phone call?!?!?!? They ASSUMED we weren't going through with our agreement without ANY confirmation from us or speaking with their "customers" . For all they knew, we did decide not to go with financing and were going to give them the cash when they installed the unit. The point is, they took NO RESPONSIBILITY. Ultimately, we came out on top & came to realize quickly that this interaction was a blessing in disguise. If this is the way they handle potential customers, I would hate to see how they would handle a concern from us after they installed a new unit - AFTER they had our money. Additionally, we've since learned from gathering more estimates that there were two MAJOR steps First Choice was NOT going to perform during our installation; THEY WERE GOING TO BYPASS PULLING PERMITS & STATE MANDATED TESTS before installing our unit without our knowledge (I am in the process of informing the state & Lennox, for which they are a "certified" dealer, of this lack of attention to detail). So if after learning of my experience, you still wish to choose this company, good luck because I am quite certain, you will need it. read more

In June 2008 my husband and I had 3 quotes from 3 different heating and air conditioning companies. First Choice being one of them. We own a house that was built in 1923 and had some heating ducts and a furnace but no air conditioning unit. First Choice submitted the most reasonable quote and Leo the contractor who came to the house to make write up the proposal assured us verbally that the quote included everything new...Everything, all grills, duct work, insulation, furnace and air conditioning unit. As we are not A/C or heating experts we looked at the quote and took him at his word as it appeared thorough. The day came to install everything, Leo arrived with about 5 laborer and one electrician and left about 30 mins after. The men worked all day and into the evening, complaining and swearing in various languages. They did not clean up after themselves nor did they communicate with us at all. The opening to the attic was the wrong size for the furnace and it took them longer to install it, and cracked the door and the frame to get it in. When it came to complete the day, we noticed that the intake grill had not been replaced. We asked the man who was asking us to sign and he said it was not part of the quote, but he had not authority to speak on it. We left it and called the next day. We spoke to the contractor, Leo who said the same thing, it was not on the quote and they were not responsible. We decided it was not worth the fight, it was just a grill. We took the old grill off and then it was revealed the plenum and the elbow connecting this to the ducts was also not replaced. We checked the quote and this was part of it. We called 3 times and asked to speak to the manager and go no response. I then wrote a letter and then received a call from Leo. Who stated, and I quote, "Why are you hanging me out to dry? You have a lovely new air conditioning unit, it's nice..no? Why are you not happy? Why you complaining? Be happy!" Leo came out and had a look. He said, quote again, "look, just paint the grill and be happy. I've done what I am obligated to do." The next day we called Mike Gurts who is the manager. He called me back. He argued with me on the work and the quote. When he finally understood and heard the plenum and the elbow were not replaced he softened and said..."oh, those should have been replaced. When can we do this work for you?" He added that he would not replace the intake grill as it was not in the quote. I decided to accept this, even though I was verbally assured it would be replaced and could not have been expected to know any of these terms at the time, it just didn't seem worth the trouble. We set up an appointment and they didn't show up at the time allocated and they didn't call. After one letter, at least 15 - 20 phone calls, (note-even after all this activity the receptionist still didn't know my name or remember anything about this issue), and now over one year of dealing with this we decided to dispute the final charge from the finance company. As soon as the final charge went into dispute, we received a call from Mike Gurts' secretary asking if they could come out on Monday. I said that I would need to check with my husband because I would be out of town. They kept calling, Sat, Sunday and Monday, on my cell phone and greatly added to my long distance bill. They did not call any other numbers. I finally called them on Tuesday and Mike snidely stated that he wanted to be there yesterday (Monday) to complete the job. I replied that I wanted the job complete June 2008. He went silent and said, "You're right. When can we finish this." We set up the appointment last week, mid September (now 13 months from the original install) and they came and replaced the elbow and the plenum without charge. As agreed. We just today received a review from the financing company stating that the dispute has been resolved in the merchants favor and to read the attached letter from First Choice. There was a letter from Mike Gurts himself negating everything we had discussed. He does not mention that the plenum was not replaced or the elbow was not replaced and that they have completed this at no charge to us. He does not state that they didn't show up for the first re-appointment before the charge dispute and did not call, he just states that we were not home. An utter lie. He states that we called and asked them to hold off because we did not want to repair drywall - another lie. Either way...Let it be a lesson. When a service man comes to your house quoting you for something that you know nothing about and they say repeatedly, "don't worry, everything new, everything new", it is not their job to be honest, it is your job to do your home work. I have learned this lesson. Now it has not only cost me $10,000,but an additional $1800 in finance charges. Run the other way from this company! read more

Last year we paid them $2600 to install a new Two-ton unit. The unit had problems after installation. After 16 months the new unit burned. The owner Mike wanted to charge me $875 to replace the parts underwarranty. In a different unit, last year they wanted to charge $650 to replace a part that was not necessary. Had a bad full install done at my place. Charged 10g for a 5 ton unit that has poor air circulation and consequently does not cool place effectively. Following install, I called the technician/contractor/ owner .... Leo? He did not want to make any adjustments or spend time troubleshooting without dishing out more cash. I've had problems on this units a few times but you can't rely on him coming out without dishing out money. He charged my a/c for a price of $375??? I had other companies service my unit since and do not provide that bad service and never over charge like this rinky dink joint. NOT recommended. They were suppose to come to my folk's house between 11AM-12PM and it's almost 3PM and they haven't shown up. Not even a call saying they would be late. Poor service. No longer recommended. You're off the list. read more
