I just want to start this off by saying my family and I have been going here for over 10 years. I moved recently out of state but have continued to see them when I'm in town for exams. In March I purchased contacts and then glasses later on this year. I'm in town for the holidays and unfortunately had forgotten my contacts. I called and explained the situation, how loyal we are and how I'm from out of town. I nicely asked if I could swing by and get 2 pairs of contacts - Wendy declined and proceeded to say that unless I come in for an exam or put in an order I wouldn't be able to get the trial contacts. With the amount of years and money my family and I have spent, and I can't even get 4 individual contacts. Safe to say I will not be a returning customer. read more

Dr. Swenson is wonderful. I went to a different doctor before coming to FCEC and she screwed up my prescription. Dr. Swenson worked with me for 2 months to get back to where I needed to be. She was very nice every time I saw her or spoke to her on the phone. The office is elegant and the staff is professional and polite. She was there to help understand the reason we were there to see the doctor. The doctor was thorough, patient and answered all my son's questions. This person doing the exams for me was like if someone had a gun in his head, literally running, rude, mad, just waiting so bad for finishing with me. Went in for eye/ contact exam, came out with an order of new glasses on the way and trial contacts with weekly follow ups until we found the correct pair that my eyes wanted to work with. After reading some reviews, I decided to book a much needed eye exam for my three year old. I was a little hesitant because what three year old can sit still long enough for an exam?! The staff was friendly, helpful and very patient with us. After some ups and downs with my wild child, they even let him pick a toy out of a treasure box, which he thought was pretty awesome! The eye care center has a pretty good selection of eyewear for kids. And their prices are average/practical. Our eyewear was even ready to same day!! Overall great experience. I had my eye exam here and they have my prescription on file. Came by during my lunch today to purchase new frames. No optical help, no doctor on site, no idea of when one would return because the staff didn't know when they left. I asked for a copy of my prescription: "Sorry, no doctor on site to sign it." My daughter bent the side of my glasses last night and I have heard many great things about this eye place form my friends. So without making an appointment this morning I walked in and was greeted by one of the associates working the phones. I told her I would like to get my glasses fixed because they were bent. She then directed me to the place where I can be helped. I only waited for about a minute. The gentleman was very nice and helped me immediately. He fixed my glasses at no charge. A courtesy for me! I made an appointment for my twins glasses and contact exam. When we showed up they told me they only had one of them scheduled. They said they would ask the doctor if he can be worked in and that got worked out. Then as we were getting all the tests done to see the doctor they come tell me that they were running the insurance and said they don't have a contact exam covered until after the new year. I asked them why wasn't this looked up before we came to the appointment and they responded we usually do. since we were already there they saw the doc and I brought up my frustration with him. I have to say I don't think he really cared. He seemed to just blow me off. we just returned today for the contact exam. I was sick with the flu so my husband went with them and told him to get a paper contact script so I can order the contacts online and that is what was said. Well, they come home and the only thing they gave them was a receipt. no prescription!! just quite frustrated that what I would call all "normal" routine things just not going smoothly. read more

The low reviews worried me but I gave them a chance and was so surprised at the level of service they gave to my 4 year old. They were thorough and patient and genuinely cared about both her and myself. They're busy, of course, so there's natural waiting periods but that's expected in any medical office and shouldn't be held against them. They have a passion for families and to correct vision. Highly recommend. I even went there myself and it was great and had to go through multiple brands of contacts to try to fix my issue and they were patient and accommodating and also wanted the perfect brand and type of lens that would be most beneficial. If you have had a concussion, you need to see Dr. Bigham at First Choice Eye. Dr. Bigham is a genius! I went to see him after my concussion because I was dizzy and nauseous and had trouble reading. He did a very thorough exam and started me in Vision Therapy which is also available in his office. My other eye doctor told me my vision was fine. I am glad I got a second opinion. He is one of a very few neurological optometrists in this area. He has extensive training in helping kids and adults with learning disabilities, sleep issues, ADD, balance issues, vertigo, stroke and concussion recovery. I started seeing major improvements within the first week of starting vision therapy. I cannot say enough about this very special practice. read more

beware: this place will force you to get an eyeglass prescription filled with them, even if they don't have a pair that fit or are within your budget. they charge $50 extra for the p.d which is what you need to get eyeglasses elsewhere. adult eyeglass frames start at $275+ that doesn't include the frames. average price of glasses here is $500 read more

The Dr and staff are very friendly. I've never had to wait long. I've used them for routine eye exams to eye issues to frames and lenses. When my new lenses got scratched they quickly got the process going to get them replaced. read more

I've always had a wonderful experience with this practice! I've been going here for many years, specifically for eyeglasses. The entire staff is wonderful! All are extremely professional, polite and upbeat. The woman who helped me pick out my glasses was awesome. I was particular in my choice, and she was even more so! Be Wary of these people. They will be nice until they get your money. When you have a problem, as I had, whereas my glasses fell apart due to poor workmanship, they will leave you out in the cold. For the price I paid, I should have received quality glasses. Glasses were 6 months old and lens fell out of frame. I was told that it was not heir problem as Consumers should provide periodic maintenance, as is required when owning a car. read more

They couldn't have been nicer when I was setting up my appointment but that changed quickly once I was a patient. They caused me a major insurance problem due to incompetence on their part. I had trouble getting return phone calls and their attitude sure changed. I felt like they couldn't care less about me and my problems. I am scheduled to go back to complete my eye exam - why a second appointment is needed for that, with an additional charge - was never satisfactorily explained to me. I am seeing another optometrist to get new glasses even though it means starting over and probably encountering more expense. There is no way I would ever go back and I cannot recommend them to anyone. I feel like Dr. Bingham and his staff should be avoided at all costs. read more

I was seen at this practice two times with the same issues with my eyes. The things I was told to do made the issue worse. I was close to paying $1000 out of pocket for a suggested procedure and had been using very expensive prescribed eye drops, when I decided to go to my Primary doctor to get a second opinion. He suggest I go on allergy drops which, in fact, was what I needed all along. My eyes are fine now but I'm left paying for the visits that were a waste of money and my time. read more

I have been coming to First Choice for about a decade. They have a huge selection of eyewear, and unlike the previous reviewer's comments, I have only had positive experiences with my frames. My oldest son used to be incredibly rough with his glasses, and one year they were replaced THREE times! I was embarrassed to go back that third time, but I was treated with kindness and respect. Every staff member I have met has been extremely knowledgeable and professional. Personally, I love this place! read more

Electronic equipment was not working properly during eye exam and frustrated tech had to get some data manually. My Maui Jim sunglasses frames sent for new lenses were broken at the lab, and it took three weeks for the lab to notify First Choice, after they had indicated the glasses were in a final phase and ready to be mailed. If you use your own frame, no one accepts responsibility for breakage, so First Choice then wanted an additional $139.00 for other frames. This was after paying $758.00 (yes, I had vision insurance) for what was supposed to be one regular pair of glasses and the sunglasses. The regular pair took three trips to have the nose pads adjusted correctly and it turned out they had been put on upside down on the glasses by First Choice, causing great discomfort. Additionally if you want your pupil distance (measured during the exam you paid for) to order glasses online, First Choice will not provide that unless you pay an additional $50.00, yet other local optometrists will gladly do this, even if you have not been their patient. I sent a letter to the optometrist (Dr. Bigham) notifying him of the type of service offered by his practice, and he designated office personnel to call me, instead of having the courtesy or interest to call me himself. Overall, a very poor experience. read more

Have to disagree with other review. Have been going here for years with the whole family. All four of us wear some type of correction. As a patient got a great discount on glasses- hundreds less than other Charlotte shops. With a little planning via calling ahead have had no issues. Highly recommend this business. read more
