So I showed up 30 min before the 1000 am opening and I was #4 in line! They promptly opened up on time and by 1015 am I was at the service counter and paying for my tires! It took about 1 hr 15 min for them to mount the new tires and call me to say it was finished. But not a problem, as I could use the time to go shopping next door anyways. However, I just wish there was a small sitting area in the tire center. But in my case, I went shopping, and also had a quick lunch while waiting in the food court right outside. I think it helped in my case, that I looked online to see which tire I wanted, the tire size (I just looked at what was already on the car), and the year, make, model of the car. Then when I reached the counter, I could tell the sales person exactly what I wanted. So in doing a quick cost comparison between goodyear and costco, the savings of costco not charging for the mounting can be a big difference. For the same amount paid, you can get a better tire from costco. In my case, I got an 80,000 mile Michelin at costco, as compared to a 60,000 mile tire had I gone to goodyear. So it's Costco Tire Center for me from now on!

I did ask some questions like wanting an estimate before they could even see my car, and could not explain well what was happening with my car. She's actually a very sweet and friendly woman. She is knowledgable and she is the wife of the owner/one of the mechanics. I believe they also have a son that is a mechanic there as well. I read in a review that the receptionist told a customer the shop does not give estimates over the phone. The mechanic has no way of giving an estimate without seeing the problem. They may tell you an idea of what a service would cost, but they cannot give an accurate or honest estimate without first looking at what could be the cause of the problem. I was explained this too, and there has been instances where the problem was not what I or the mechanic initially thought. There have been times when I was quoted a very pricey estimate, but all I needed was a tightening of a screw or a resetting of a sensor. I was not charged for it. Mr. George Hokama is modest, honest and knowledgable, and very friendly. He takes the time to explain everything from what is of high priority and what services can wait. Their prices are reasonable and within the average range of what I would expect to pay. They are honest when it comes to diagnosing your car, and you will speak with the mechanic throughout the day if he finds another problem, he will give you an estimate or have his wife give you an estimate over the phone at that time, and he thoroughly test drives your car before releasing it. They have never taken longer than a day to take care of any problems I had, even if I dropped my car off late. I have referred friends and colleagues to Hokama Auto Repair and they have the same opinion- great service, trustworthy local people, and thorough hard-working employees.

They were very standoffish on the phone, and when I pulled up to the garage space, the guy who was receiving cars was extremely rude to me. There was a part I needed to replace in the back tire, which the mechanic found during the alignment. After a few weeks of waiting, the part came in and I took my car back to American Tire. They took care of everything promptly and efficiently. Even gave me a ride home (because they weren't too busy and had an extra person on the clock. This service is not usually provided, just fyi. They went out of their way, instead of having me wait for the work to get done plus the realignment, which would take approx 4 hours. Dre was super nice and we talked story on our short drive. He agreed to their premium price. Without going into detail, there was a serious safety issue with my husband's car. My husband informed them about the problem; however the representative was reluctant to investigate the problem. The representative stood by his "experienced service staff." So my husband went to a reputable tire company to investigate the problem. The company discovered and concluded that American Tire Company negligently installed the tires improperly. Moreover, American Tire Company installation standards are generally set for commercial vehicles and NOT according to the specific type of vehicle that requires service. There is a sign in their office disclaiming that they are not responsible for any damages to the owner's rims but they claim to be very careful. Now I understand why they posted that disclaimer in the office. I issued a complaint with BBB. American Tire Company failed to offer any reasonable settlement. The Honolulu location is not trustworthy. I remember when the company was on Colburn St. when the company first started. SHAMEFUL! ! ! Maybe this location suits commercial vehicles only. The first was last year, when I paid for an oil change that included fluid top-offs, then found my coolant reservoir dry. They corrected it, and I gave the new ownership another chance. This time, my car wouldn't start, so I had it towed in. I approved the repair charges for 25% more than other shops quoted, including an additional $35 for genuine BMW parts that I specifically requested instead of the aftermarket parts initially quoted. Despite repeated requests, I never received a written estimate. The shop recommended a new battery, so I bought one and brought it in. I didn't have the tools and asked for help loosening and tightening the fasteners. They agreed without mentioning a charge. The help took about 15 minutes. At checkout, they presented a card terminal showing the total before giving me an itemized invoice. Only when I asked for a breakdown did I discover a separate battery-installation charge for $158.00. Had they told me the price beforehand, I would have bought my own tools and handled it myself. When I questioned the charge, I was asked whether I expected them to work for free. I was willing to pay for their time and offered a reasonable amount. What I expected was the chance to agree to a price before the work began. The final bill also included a $42 "shop supplies" fee that was not disclosed in the phone conversations. The repair involved replacing the belt and tensioner, but I received no explanation of what supplies were used or how the fee was calculated. I felt that they were inflating the bill. The prices quoted over the phone excluded taxes and fees, leaving me without a clear total before approving the work. Another employee told me that if I wasn't happy, I didn't have to come back. After 15 years, that was difficult to hear. I felt dismissed for raising a reasonable concern about their lack of professionalism. They ultimately removed the unauthorized battery charge entirely, and I give them credit for correcting the bill, I still paid for these unexplained supplies. Still, the lack of transparency and business courtesy changed how I felt about doing business there.
