Lectured us on how to dry wood for 5 minutes, that they would work up an estimate and that we also needed repointing on the chimney. They charged us $150.00 and left after about 15 minutes. After several days we received an estimate for a total of $22,300.00 to replace the liner, clean the insert and rebuild the fire place, with no credit for the $150.00 that we paid for zero work! Proceeded to have two other companies give estimate and both stated that the liner and insert could be cleaned for under $500.00. Hired one of them and cleaned the insert, the liner and now fireplace works great, like it is new. Not a good experience at all and would not recommend or ever use this company.

Herzog's is big- not Home Depot big- but it's got a lot of what you may need for home repairs. They carry lighting equipment, painting items, a kitchen+ bathroom design dep't, textiles, BBQ accessories, vacuum cleaners, gardening supplies, candles, some clothing- heck, even minimalist jewelry in a glass case, etc. My girl with the glasses in the paint department was smooth and patient. She took her time when we asked her questions about colors and how each color stain would react to raw wood. Service was fine, we left with smiles and was the opposite of everything that's been written here in the past. Whether you're working with a contractor like we are or you're one of those Do-It-Yourselfers, this is your place.

At least they let you linger because they do sell lots of DIY equipment and materials...but with a "DIY mentality," ie find it yourself. But, we also wanted to hire a company to truly get into the nitty gritty of things and do a more thorough observation and consult. Based out of Kingston, NY, Ms. Ok Chimney's owner Jessica, visited our home for a chimney sweep in no time and brought her no-nonsense military background with her too. Hubs can get by easily starting a fireplace and wood-burning stove- but I, know absolutely nada about such things. Nada. She and her assistant(?)demonstrated knowledge and experience as they thoroughly inspected the masonry indoors, the flue and damper+handles. They also inspected the chimney from the outside to make sure the chimney cap wasn't loose, cracked or missing anything. These folks protected the surrounding area before using some sort of high-powered soo vacuum cleaner. Price was great for the cleaning. Jessica gave us a step-by-step wood stove 101 rundown and words of advice in terms of safety. In the end, the at-home care and attention, is the name of the game.
