I've lived in my house, with the same wood stove, for 20 years. It's never worked well in terms out how much heat it generated, and my chimney has always seemed to gunk up quickly. Over the years I've had 5 outfits come to clean my chimney. JP were the first to point out some serious, real issues with my stove, including lack of shielding on the wall, and a hearth that was illegally small. They raised my chimney height above the roofline to improve my draft (it was illegally short too), hand-crafted an attractive hearth, put up wall shielding and double-sleeve piping, and removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the catalytic converter on the stove. They were prompt, friendly, and incredibly conscientious, as was the owner of the company, who pulled out all the stops to make this work clean, fast and affordable. The result? My stove is like a new stove! It's AMAZING how cleanly it burns and how hot it gets, now that they've done their work and educated me on how to properly use my stove. They did more, in one visit, than all of the other companies put together - NONE of whom EVER pointed out both the danger and inefficiency inherent in my setup, or the ways to remediate these issues and get much better performance out of my stove. I don't know where to start. Our chimney bricks were literally chipping off by the day. JP (John and Paul) Chimney Services parged/repaired our 2 circa 1960 chimneys - (parging is putting mortar over bricks - think stucco-like). Their estimate was 30% below another one. They came in UNDER estimate and even offered a senior discount. Communications back and forth were timely and professional. Their work ethic was amazing. Paul worked tirelessly and left the area cleaner than when he started. They were skilled and knowledgeable. Paul recommended and ultimately constructed a drip edge around that top of the chimney to protect the chimney column. He also helped pick the right color for the mortar. Unlike EVERY other chimney service I've had here in the last 20 years, JP showed me just how unsafe my stove was, and how inefficient it was due to bad maintenance and bad operation on my part. It cost FAR less than I thought for them to make modifications to bring my stove up to spec, and, once I fired it up again, with my newly properly drafting chimney extension and my newly-cleaned catalytic converter, it's like I have a new stove! After calling different chimney services looking for an estimate for a new wood stove install, no one called back. I then called JP Chimney Service and they were at my house within the next couple days and gave me an estimate on the spot. I agreed to the estimate and they were able to do the install that week. The workers are very professional and did an excellent job. Fast forward two years: The pipe damper broke and I was going to replace it myself but I had a hard time finding the part. I called JP and asked if they know where I can purchase the damper. They were at my house the next morning and replaced the damper free of charge. Can not get any better than that! After looking for a few years for someone to get my mid-1800's fireplace and chimney back into shape and having no luck, I found the guys at J&P Chimney (I think they are brothers). They are little intense about their chimney knowledge and standards, but it's what you want when they are working on something that could burn your house down. Our house is the oldest in the town of Ulster, with the oldest section dating to 1693 and the "new" addition dating to 1741! We had 3 chimneys in need of complete rebuild ( 1 in the oldest section, 2 in the newer section). Naturally, we were very picky about who would do the work. Not only did we want craftsmanship but the integrity of the original chimneys needed to be replicated. We were given two names, one of which was JP. We got bids from both.
