This place deserves five stars!! We aren't from the area and were starving after spending the day at the Pequot museum. We found this cute place by accident, and so happy we did! On a hot day, the restaurant was nice and cool, and very clean. Our server, Brandi, was so kind and funny. She was attentive and came back to make sure we were satisfied. Out of the menu, we ordered clam chowder, El Captain on fireside bread, the Cheeseburger quesadilla, the High Point, chicken tenders, kids cheese pizza, and fries. LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE FRIES. Unlike any fries I've had before. Like a fat crispy version of a curly fry. Soft and fluffy on the inside, nicely crisp and you could tell the oil was clean. We ordered extra fries to go. The clam chowder was good, but different. A little grainy with what tasted like basil. But it was loaded with clams and the portion was generous. My kids were really happy with the pizza and tenders. Again, everything tasted fresh. The cheeseburger quesadilla was soooo good with mushrooms, onions, and the sauce on top. Tortilla was still crispy despite the sauce. The chicken sandwiches were good. Not the highlight of the table but the fireside bread it was on was delicious. I think everything else at the table was so full of flavor, they just didn't shine. Have had many offerings from here at Fireside Brick Oven over the years but this build-our-own tonight was the best pizza we have had from any place anywhere. It was a simple creation of a small "red" pie with roasted garlic, spinach and gorgonzola cheese. The flavor of each ingredient had no other competition to crowd out their glorious contribution. And the thin crust was perfectly done. Our only problem was the price. But for the best ever there can be little complaint. read more

This place is ok. My brother got the cheese pizza which was good. I got the Great Smokey Mountain, which no one liked. It was WAYYYYYY TOO SALTY. Yeesh, there couldn't have been more salt added. I'm not sure if it was the salt or meat or the onions, but it needs to be less salty. Village Pizza down the street has a philly cheesesteak pizza that I absolutely loved and was hoping for a similar experience, but was just way too salty (My parents and brother are here and I come to visit once or twice a year). Our first visit had us as new converts! Our order was plentiful and delicious. Back again for round two left us scratching our heads. Much smaller portions and unlike our first visit we were charged for refills on our soda. After eating pepperoni and anchovies ! That spoiled it. So inexpensive to accommodate. This place is delicious! The inside is very cute and recently updated. The two beautiful brick ovens are visible for customers to see. I got the California Cobb and it was great, very fresh. The pizza though, was absolutely amazing. I live in Mystic and this is the best pizza within a 30 minute radius hands down. Highly recommend this place. Will be back to try more soon. read more

Wanted a simple dinner after a busy Saturday and needed to be in Gales Ferry so we decided to try this place. It was mildly busy but we had a choice of tables. Not our favorite seating, but these style stools are popular in restaurants. After a tiring day, we both would prefer a comfy seat.. but the decor and general feel is clean, welcoming and even homey. The pizza prep crew in the kitchen was busy and fun to watch. Our server was on the ball even though she was taking care of all of the tables. The only thing we ever waited for was the check. We started out with Thai chili wings which were meaty and juicy and tasted great. Nice to get both celery and carrots, an accompaniment many places have cut out. Then we went with brick oven sandwiches. The el Capitan was a delicious blend of chicken spinach onions tomato and gorgonzola.. definitely needed to wash my hands after devouring my 1/4. The Devil's Tower was equally sinful: roast beef onions peppers mushrooms and cheese.. the sweet potato fries were the only disappointment as they were a little overdone for my taste, but still good. There will definitely be a return trip. The salads and pizzas delivered to tables near us looked plentiful and quite enticing. read more

I needed pizza boxes for a project that I was working on and I called this humble restaurant and told them my dilemma. The manager gave me the pizza boxes for free without any questions asked and they didn't charge me for it. Most places I asked didn't want to help me and said they didnt have any boxes for me. Usually, the fussier, more unique, and more "foodie" a restaurant's choices are, the more likely I am to be excited about them. In this particular case, it's the solid craft, well-made dough, and fresh ingredients that make this restaurant a clear winner, which is far from fussy. When I first dined here, I had an initial feeling of "here we go again." The interior is a typical family atmosphere pizzeria, centralized around an enormous brick oven. Once I gave the menu and the décor a second glance, it was clear that this was no ordinary pizzeria. Pizza selection, sandwiches, and salads are based on outdoor themed hiking locations. I was really impressed to see the variety of the menu, and had a hard time deciding on what to order because there were so many things I wanted to order simultaneously! The dining experiences I've had here were all excellent. My favorite pizza is the Zion, topped high with exceptionally fresh veggies, grilled chicken, crunchy bacon, and a variety of cheeses. Our friends ordered a simple pepperoni, and a vegetarian as well. Between slices, all was heard were mmmmmmm's, and resounding remarks of "wow, this really is good!" I don't remember the last time I've fought my husband for the last slice of pizza, but the pizza here warrants a tussle for ever last bite. Specials are rotating, including an alluring peach flatbread, pasta specials, and Wednesday night date night that includes half off bottles of wine. Wine choices are really good, including some amazing small batch vintages from the heart of Wine Country California. Amazing service from the phone call in, the being greeted at the door and to the ringing up of my order! This place is seriously a gem and everyone needs to go there! The pizza was outstanding! My wife and I have dined there on multiple occasions and each time we have been well taken care of. Whether you order the world famous Love Salad, a daily special, a Fireside Sandwich or a tasty delicious life changing Fireside pie, the only real question based on the menu is what will I get the next time I come back. Today was the first time we tried this restaurant, we got take out! An 18" "Badlands" red pie (meat lovers pizza) and garlic bread w mozzarella, everything was delicious! They told us our food would be ready in 25 min. I got there at the exact time and everything was ready, the cashier was super friendly and even asked if I was military (I had no idea they had a military discount) it's 10% ! True to the area there are no shortages of pizza joints and Chinese food. Fireside has been open for a few years now and it's been always at the request of my nephews that we go, and mostly because of the fries not the pizza. Located in an old shopping plaza off RT 12 (across from the Dunkin' Donuts/ Job Lot. It's a small restaurant that delivers, eats in and to-go orders. It has small tables that can be pushed together and a few tables outside even though I have the feeling they would forget about you sitting out there. Fireside has pizzas, sandwiches, salads and a variety of appetizers, they don't have pastas since I don't think the restaurant has a stove so everything is either fried or baked, minus the salads of course. The decor is almost Southwestern style with pictures of National parks hanging around the restaurant. All the pizzas are named aptly after parks or national monuments. The smell of the ovens when you walk in hits you like a wall of bricks, this is one reason I have heard people stop coming, it's too overpowering. Besides that, there are plenty of choices for the vegetarian and meat eater alike. I think the quality of the pizzas have definitely gone down since they opened. We usually get a mesa verde and I do have to say years ago it was amazing. Since I love all my pizzas with a little darker color I order it crispy. The mesa verde is a white pizza but today it was just plain dry and tasteless. Even with the little amount of cheese they put on I had to drink so much water just to swallow it. If they would have put some oil on the top or something it would have helped. Yes, there was a good amount of toppings but it didn't help with the overall taste. Along with the Mesa we got the Old Faithful (cheese only) and this again had all crust and a little amount of cheese, nothin special but I should have had that instead of the Mesa Verde. My sister and nephews got the meat pizza and it was so burnt they didn't eat more than one slice. The fries are crispy and good the beers around $5 a pint and wines from $6.50+. Service here is never great, the waitresses always seem to be preoccupied and hanging out in the back or annoyed when we ask for something. I swear they only hire waitresses with bad attitudes...always a turnoff. We ordered three large pizzas so got one small cheese for free, but I couldn't use the yelp $5 off, which kinda wasn't cool, and not a good thing when people are using yelp. The owner came out and asked us how everything was (I was not at the table at the moment) but no one wanted to make a scene so we said it was ok. We were the only table there but it's the confrontation my family is not good with. Lol Overall I gave it 2 stars, if I would have written this about 2 years ago it would have been at least a 4 star. They need to change some things here if they want to get those regulars back. This is a small town and you have to keep folks happy or at least have consistency and happy waitstaff. There were nine of us in the party and my nephews are always the ones that want us to go here, after today's visit they said they didn't want to come back. I know so many people who work here who hate it. After this Facebook review blew up they mostly quit out of embarrassment for working under this owner. She's rude to her staff, rude to her customers. Owner always says "well if you'd just talked to me if you were unsatisfied with something I'd be happy to fix your order" but the few people that have the balls to ask her, get screamed at and the cops called on them, so her claims are inaccurate to say the least. I hate writing a bad review, I really do. It makes me feel as though my standards must somehow be set far too high if I find that a place is only deserving of 2 stars. However, my standards really aren't all that different from yours. I expect a clean, friendly atmosphere...good food...good service..and good prices. That's about it. So why the 2 stars for Fireside? Well, here's why.... My first experience with Fireside was take-out. We ordered a couple of pies after hearing a friend's recommendation. Also, this place offers up gluten free pizza crust, and as I can't eat gluten, that becomes a big selling point for me. So, we ordered two different pies to share, and brought it back home. The service while taking out was friendly, and the girl behind the counter was polite and happy to apply a military discount to our order, which is fantastic. Good experience so far. However, once we got the pies home and looked at them, we couldn't help but laugh. We paid $36 for these two small pizzas, which in my humble opinion is completely overpriced. However, they WERE gluten free, and g-free food usually costs more, so I let it slide. The crust (thickness-wise) was laughable. (see picture of hand holding pizza in the photos section). For the extra $3 per pie, I expected a little more substance to this crust. It felt like I was eating a very large cracker. Now, the toppings were delicious, but all in all, I was disappointed with the overall product. Far too expensive for what we got. My second experience at Fireside was today, and this, my friends, is what sealed the deal with the 2 star rating. This experience is why I will never return, nor recommend this joint to anyone in the area. Our server was Erica, a young girl who seems to think that appropriate work attire is shorts so short that your rear end is nearly falling out of them. I don't know about you, but if I want to see that, I'll go to Hooters. Anywhere else, I expect a waitress to be dressed appropriately. But I digress. So, our party was seated immediately, as we were the only people there. Odd, seeing as it was mid-afternoon on a beautiful Saturday, but whatever. We scanned the menu (mind you, I'm looking for gluten-free options for myself), and our waitress appears and asks if we have any questions. Me: "The burgers...is there anything aside from beef in them? I'm asking because I need my meal to be gluten free." Her: "Uhhh...there's seasonings?" Me: "Okay..... and what about swapping out the french fries...what can I substitute?" Her: "We have, uhhh, pasta salad..." (umm. does this girl NOT understand what gluten is?) "Oh, and we also have, like, regular salad...with, ya know, dressing." Me: "Are any of your dressings gluten free?" Her: *shrug* "I don't know." (stands and stares at me.) Now, come on. You're a waitress. Not only is it your job to know the menu, but it's also your job to investigate answers when something like this pops up and you don't know the answer. Telling me "idk" and then just staring at me as if the conversation is over is NOT helpful. I decide not to overload her brain any more and go with a GF pizza (again). My friends place their orders (there were only 3 of us). She then says, "Okay, sooo....you had the pizza (points at friend #1)....and you had a....uhh....umm....pizza? (literally asking what friend #2 ordered five seconds ago because she didn't write anything down.) She then mumbles how she should have written this down and walks off.....completely to our bewilderment. So we sit there, assuming she's coming back with a notepad, but she never reappears. Instead we wait. And wait. And wait some more. (were the only ones in here, remember?) And finally our food comes out. Luckily, it was correct. However, the chicken calzone that friend #2 ordered was dry as a bone inside. Totally gross. Our waitress randomly pops back at odd times, asking if we need refills (to our already full glasses....?) and eventually we finish and she collects random plates from our table to take into the back. She returns with the check and doesn't place it on the table, but stands there and waits for my card. Rude. She asks if I need the rest of mine wrapped, I say yes. My friend tells her not to wrap his because he won't eat it...she brings it back wrapped anyway. What the heck, girl? Do you NOT listen to your customers? Seriously. So we grudingly pay the $44 bill and leave....never to return again. This place has flavor down, but as far as a competent staff who knows how to handle gluten-free options (which their menu boasts)...not so much. I shouldn't have to be told "uhh...idk" from a 19-year-old chick in daisy dukes when I try to order a meal that won't make me sick. Sorry, but that doesn't fly with me.
