    Kids grilled cheese.

Why oh why does New Orleans not have a Firehouse Subs yet? That my friends is the question. I had my first experience there on 12-30-2016 and I am totally digging this place. We had just worked up an appetite walking around the Tanger Outlet Mall and Cabela's and were looking for something very casual, as we had our 4 year old in son in tow. Firehouse subs menu includes, a kids menu, subs under 500 calories, salads under 500 calories, cold subs, hot subs and hot specialty subs. Do yourself a huge favor and go right for the hot specialty subs. These overstuffed behemoths, especially the large, are more than enough for 2 people to share. We split the steak and cheese and I could not have been happier, as this sandwich was the real deal. Kudos to the friendly staff for walking the floor and engaging their customers in friendly banter. I also love the cool Coke freestyle machine but what truly impressed me, aside from that ridiculously delicious sandwich was the charitable contributions they make to local first responders.

But those folks are out there so here is what you will enjoy if you are like me. At the end is what will annoy you if you're like me. The GOOD I know others complained but I love ordering at the counter taking a number and having staff bring food to the table. My cashier noted that I was with a group and was able to ring our orders up separately but associate the same table number. As folks have noted, they do bring out the food as ready so you have to be comfortable with eating before everyone is served or some folks having lukewarm dish. I love unlimited self serve coffee. Others loved their premade coffee drinks especially the boozy one. I also love the decor, the staff, the large outside eating area. The food was interesting. There was a lot of hit and miss within the same dish. For instance, the table shared beignets and fried green tomotoes. I loved the okra and pimento cheese that accompanied the fried green tomatoes but the tomatoes... meh. I think I would like this dish better during peak tomatoe season. The beignets were hard but the strawberries and cream delicious. The MEH The main dishes weren't enough to complain or rave about. Two folks had omelettes, someone had French toast, someone had the biscuit sandwich with crab cakes, and someone had the limited edition biscuit sandwich. The BAD I live in B.R. proper and we have enough brunch breakfast places for me to frequent without driving half an hour. If I am driving, why not just go all the way into New Orleans! There are like 3 spots for groups over 4. So great for groups of four or two. But that's it. Notice that only two out of six people chose a biscuit sandwich. Unless you want some variation of a fried chicken biscuit sandwich, you are out of luck. They have a decent sides list. They could easy add a make your own biscuit sandwich option that allows folks to have three items from sides menu plus a biscuit on the plate and then the guest puts it all together themselves. Make that a price that matches the other sandwich prices. Tada. YOU'RE welcome! So, if I lived in Gonzales/Prairieville, and they made this change to the menu I could see myself visiting every other month or so. How it stands, I don't see myself needing to visit again.

They don't have a drive-through so I had to go inside. Being brand new, everything was nice and clean, but I was surprised that they didn't have more patrons. It was pretty obvious that the staff was not totally up to speed just yet; the light kitchen staff looked busy:, on the order side of the counter there were four or five employees standing around doing nothing; two ladies on the pick up side handled my entire order. The lady tried hard to make a milkshake for me, and it did taste good, but it was very thin. The burger was very good, but the Cajun fries were over seasoned (which is saying a lot, since I grew up around here and like things really spiced up) and soggy. I ate about half the fries, and after finishing the burger, it felt very heavy in my belly all night long. Maybe in a couple months I'll give them another try, but I'll be sure to tell them to make the fries extra crispy. I gave them one extra star for not using Styrofoam.

It would've costed me a small fortune to purchase all the ingredients and make everything myself. For less than that, I was able to get a fried turkey, cornbread dressing, rice dressing, macaroni and cheese, broccoli and cheese rice, sweet potato casserole, green beans, gravy, dinner rolls and a pecan pie. I ordered some peach cobbler too just for a little extra razzle dazzle. The food was delicious and the leftovers are even tastier! Huge caveat--THEY DELIVERED it to my doorstep on Thanksgiving day! The lady who delivered actually brought everything in my house and set it on my counter for me. Top notch service! If you're wanting to try things before you go out and purchase the full spread like I do, their lunch deli runs their holiday menu during the week. Stop in and grab you a plate to try it out! I ended up getting the baked fish which came with corn, crawfish etouffee and I got the bread pudding for dessert( I paid less than $10 for this). The fish was moist a little salty but bearable. The crawfish etouffee over rice was really good and so was the corn. But the definite star of this particular meal was the bread pudding. I can honestly say the only place I've had better bread pudding was at Lil Dizzy's Cafe in New Orleans. I wish I would have gotten the name of the young lady that served me because she was awesome. Not sure when I'll work in the Gonzales area again. But I'll make it a point to come over here again when I do.
