I had some errands in the shopping center and stopped in here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. There were only 2 people working. No one greeted us when we walked in. I'm honestly shocked and disappointed. The Firehouse Subs in Waugh Chapel (Gambrills, MD) refused to honor their Veterans Day promotion today, even as several customers, myself included, questioned it. At least six people walked out after being told they wouldn't uphold what other locations were advertising. To make matters worse, their phone number is out of service, so there's no way to even contact the store directly to address the issue. What really frustrates me is that a Firehouse Subs in Pooler, GA faced major backlash for doing the same thing last year and ended up pledging $25,000 to make it right. You'd think this location would've learned from that mistake and treated veterans with the respect they deserve, especially on Veterans Day. Very disappointing experience. It had decent flavor, but it was pretty clear that the quality/freshness of ingredients isn't the highest priority. Have visited the FHS for years but have noticed in the last three it has steadily gone down hill. The subs are still excellent but the infrastructure and side services are not there. Outside tables are in need of repair and only one table has an umbrella. Last year all five tables had umbrellas. Iced tea ... there isn't any. Last three Sundays no tea made. Firehouse subs in Waugh Chapel is decent, but if I had to guess. I'd say it was on its way out of business. It' one of the few places in the shopping center that is never really busy. I'm actually surprised they surprised they survived the pandemic. The service here is okay, it's usually just a bunch of kids hanging out making orders. Some times they have stuff some times they don't. The sandwiches are decent enough, but theres nothing that really keeps me coming back. I try very hard to always focus on the positive when I visit a local establishment. So I will start with that. The food that my husband and I ordered was good. I ordered a club sub on wheat's and I enjoyed it. It was a bit messy, but it tasted good and was prepared as I requested. The shop was clean and the staff was wearing masks and adhering to all the current safety protocols during the pandemic. One of the employees was not wearing his mask properly, but at least he made the effort. Now, onto the less than positive stuff... When we walked in, there was only one other customer there and they were waiting on their order. There was no one else in the shop at all. Despite that, my husband and I stood in Plainview at the counter where you order for at least five minutes before we were acknowledged. The two employees that were there were standing by, arms crossed, chatting. They did not make any effort to watch the door or be mindful of customers coming in or out. It was impossible that they would not have noticed us because the bell rang when we walked in and there was no one else waiting to be served. After our order was taken we waited quite some time before our food was ready. Again, due to the fact there were no customers that had come in after us or anyone else besides the one person waiting on their food, this was very disappointing and highly unnecessary of a wait. Hmm, I'm in Gambrills enough and I have seen this place one too many times, that I finally decided to step on in. I can't say that I see too many of these restaurants, rather this is the only one that I have seen in this area. Located in the Waugh Chapel Shopping Center, pretty easy to spot, decent parking for the area. The shop is pretty decent in size, fire station theme, pretty cool. They have hot and cold sandwiches, singularly or ordered in a combo with chips and drink. I believe the sandwiches are eight inches, and come with a 32 oz soda. The whole idea of this pretty dang huge! I got the club on a sub which has smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, bacon, and Monterey jack cheese on a sub roll. Pretty hearty sandwich upon first glance, it tasted great, but how can you mess up anything with bacon, seriously? The pickle was pretty fresh, generally I don't finish these, but there seemed to be something different about this one. The staff are helpful, courteous and have good attitudes. I went to this location for the first time and got the club on a sub. It is ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and mustard with pickle on the side. I also added hot peppers to mine. It was served warm on a soft white roll. It was absolutely delicious. I came into the store on a rainy Sunday evening to pickup an order I placed online and every employee in there was goofing around. I understand how it is when it's slow but when there are customers waiting on an order the optics are terrible. Finally they got around to making my order and it was made wrong. They get the orders in and the customers out in a timely manner without being rude to you. Their signature sandwich is the Hook and Ladder since it was a business started by a couple of firemen. There's an assortment of hot sauces on display to ogle or sample with your food choice to add a little zing to your meal. A few tables and chairs for outdoor seating if the weather permits.
