Love this spot! Donuts are awesome and great for the Oak Park neighborhood! My favorite donut is the bacon donut. It has a maple bacon filling that's insane. Also all their seasonal fritters I've had a fantastic! My personal favorite so far was their Rubar, can't wait for that one again! Every time I'm there it's always spotless and chill to be there. ALSO NOTE: they start off the day WITH THE MOST POPULAR DONUTS! So if you want to get like a birthday donut, for example 6 in the morning, don't expect it to be ready yet cause it's one of their least sold donuts. Just a tip for all of y'all. This place is amazing!! I'm a chef and I can really appreciate when a place pours this much effort and more so love, and to top it off some amazing creativity!! The structure of the donuts is perfect, light and airy but still a filling donut. their custard are some of the best ice ever had, especially the butterscotch praline, wow what a perfect creation!! I came in, ordered a cappuccino and a honey glazed donut, (since they didn't have much on display at 630am ) can't complain for a good glazed. And then my morning took a bad turn. Came in here last minute to buy some doughnuts for an early morning presentation I'm giving tomorrow at 6:30am. I didn't call ahead for my 16 doughnuts (normally I would...), but dropped in because I was in the area and in a hurry. My order was welcomed and I was tempted by every doughnut in the display case. The nice man behind the counter (didn't catch his name!) appeared to be the owner and genuinely appreciated my business and offered me a complimentary coffee or doughnut since it was my first time in. He gave me instructions on how to store the doughnuts overnight and exemplified supreme customer service. I just took a bite of my pistachio old fashioned....after just having a Stan's pistachio on Monday, I might hazard to say this one was better! Yum yum yum! read more

I couldn't believe it when I heard a Firecakes was opening just a few blocks away from me. I knew it would be packed on the weekend so I went late on a monday night. There was no wait at all. The donuts were good but they weren't the best I've ever had. But they were certainly the most expensive donuts I've ever had. Even though the donuts were great, I'll probably only stop here on very special occasions. In fact, maybe Firecakes should be considered a "dessert place." By that I mean it's a place you can stop after dinner for a coffee and a fancy donut rather than it being a donut shop where you can pick up a dozen donuts for the office on your way to work. One quick tip: Don't tip. When I checked out, the woman behind the counter flipped over a tablet so that I could complete my purchase. You're going to be presented with options for tipping (10%, 15% etc). This kind of bothered me. But showing me a screen and making me hit "no tip" is kind of uncool. read more

I think my eyes were more satisfied than my tastebuds. I love standard glazed donuts, so I grabbed one of their honey-glazed donuts and a creme brulee mini along with a palmer 50/50. While I enjoyed the mini and the palmer, what I thought would be the star of the show was a bit of a letdown. The glazed donut was so large that the ratio of dough to glaze was off, leaving me with a wad of dough to chew on without the proper amount of sweet stickiness to balance everything. Should I return in the future, I would probably try something among their cake donut selections where the ratio seemed a bit more even. read more

I wanted to get doughnuts for breakfast on Father's Day so I get that things were busy. This was my first time coming here and heard great things. When I finally got to the front of the line the selection (this was at 8:45) was very limited. I asked for sprinkles. Was told rudely those are already claimed for pre-select so I could only get the ones at the front display. Without telling me how am I suppose to know that? If you have to repeat yourself after a customer asks for those then maybe you need to establish the rules for your customers when they walk through the door. So I got chocolate ones and asked for the sprinkle ones (they were vanilla with large sprinkle balls) to which I got another rude those are spoken for. Realizing she had misspoke she tried to act nice but by that time I was done. I had waited in line for 20/30 mins, paid 24 for seven doughnuts and to be spoken to so rudely I will pass and try other small business in the community. It is also horrible customer service when I looked outside to see a long line of potentially disappointed customers with limited selection and even limited number of doughnuts. Doughnuts were good and flavorful. Stars were decreased for the lack of selection, rude service, and price. But mostly rude service. read more

What great people work at Firecakes! Last night, I ordered $35 worth of doughnuts from Firecakes. The driver called me and said he was outside my door. I looked, and there was no one there. I waited 5 minutes, then called the driver again. He said he was there but there was no one. I told him we were in the "C" unit of our complex and he replied that he had only gotten as far as "B". He then showed up and gave us a small bag that turned out to be the wrong order. I called the driver and told him we received the wrong order, he said that it was what Firecakes gave him and there wasn't anything he could do about it because he was a Grubhub driver. Uh-oh.... I have been almost completely living off of Grubhub for the past year. The unfortunate distinction between Grubhub drivers versus a restaurant that has its own dedicated driver lies in what happens when there is an error.  Any time there was the wrong food sent and it was a Grubhub driver, instead of the driver coming back with the correct food, you must reorder the food, wait what is usually another hour, and you just get a refund on the original order. That is the best case scenario. Other times, we never get the food and are starving by the time we realize they are never coming (then get a refund), other times I've called the restaurant (like Red Mango) only to hear that the Grubhub driver never showed up. In the case of Red Mango, the time of delivery keeps getting updated to an hour later on the tracking site, until finally, at 1am (I originally ordered at 7pm) I get a text from Grubhub saying that my order has been canceled.  In all those scenarios, the restaurant never steps in to correct the problem themselves and we never get our food. It's understandable that they can't correct it if they don't have their own drivers and must wait for an order to come through Grubhub in order to ping another driver for their product.  However, this is what makes Firecakes so above and beyond. Not only did they replace our food, free of charge, but one of the people that worked there just got in her car and drove the food to us. And, we did not wait hours and hours to figure this all out. They had it handled within an hour after learning of the mistake. We tried to offer the employee the full amount of money when she came to our door, but she said everyone will be refunded. She also apologized every time we were on the phone with them when we were trying to figure out the delivery error, which also seldom happens anymore when I call a restaurant about an error.  The doughnuts itself were as delicious as they are always are. Fresh, unique and delicious ingredients. We had two orange poppy old fashioned's, 2 butterscotch praline creams, 2 seasonal fritters, 2 wildflower honey glazed, a gigantic varlhona chocolate iced doughnut, pistachio old fashioned. So wonderful.  So thank you to Firecakes doughnuts for giving us a unique experience that reflects what the delivery/error process used to be like with restaurants with great customer service and a dedicated delivery person. As soon as we heard a new donut place was in town, we headed over to try it. Parking across the street in the lot was easy peasy on a Thursday morning. I'm going to assume the weekends might be tougher. Once inside, we were greeted by a friendly counter clerk who whipped up two lattes as we decided what donuts to try. The variety of flavors was pretty yummy sounding, so we ended up going overboard and buying a whole box full. As we made our selections, several other people came in and it became apparent that the space was a tight fit for customers at the counter. Since we were taking ours to go, it didn't matter much. Armed with coffee and about $35 of donuts (what?!?) we headed home and dove into tasting. Pistachio old fashioned, gf vegan double chocolate and coconut, sprinkled, apple fritter, coconut cream, classic jelly filled, peanut butter and jelly, candied bacon long John, Meyer lemon, and Tahitian vanilla iced were cut in half and sampled over the next two days. The consensus was most were good but overpriced. The flavors didn't jump out at you and scream, "Hey, I'm a $3 gourmet donut. EAT ME!" The coffee was a bit on the watery side. Even with donuts to dunk, it wasn't as flavorful as I would have liked. All of that being said, I would go back for a donut or two (yeah, not 10). I didn't have high expectations from an upscale donut shop, especially since having had glazed&infused, and other designer donut shop. I ordered the nutella long john with a hot chocolate with an in-house made marshmallow, while my boyfriend got a pb&j filled glazed donut and a matcha latte. I went to this place right after they opened. Being a vegan and not having had a donut in almost 10 years, I called and asked if they had vegan donuts and they said that they did. I was sooooooooo excited to finally have a donut after so many years. Sadly, it was a huge disappointment. All they had was a chocolate concoction that I won't even call a donut. Worst tasting donut ever! I took a few bites and threw it out. It was so heavy tasting and too damn chocolately to the point of being bitter. It was also very dry. I know making things vegan is a challenge, but this was just plain awful. And to make matters even worse, the price. After taxes, it cost me $4.25. Total waste of money. I just heard that Dunkin Donuts will now be offering vegan options, so I guess I will be going there for my donut fix. At least I know the donuts will be good. read more
