Fine Estate Sales will do their best to sell your product, or items in your estate. It is your decision to set a special price for an item, or, let their experts set the price. If you are not happy with this business, then let them know and negotiate. Be a business person and DEAL WITH the problem with the source. Deal with it as a business owner, instead of writing a long boring novel that lost my attention after merely looking at the size of the review. Everyone needs to understand, Fine Estate Sales, or any similar company, is not Macy's, Nordstroms, Nieman Marcus or Louis Vuitton, etc. So unless you set a price, or negotiate a contract before signing or amend the contract, there lies an agreement, hand shake, i.e. a contract. I understand you may not be happy, however, as I mentioned above, deal with it, and work with Martin and Valetta. They are here to make money for you and them. We engaged Fine Estate to perform a Sonoma County Superior Court-ordered inventory and valuation of the personal property of a friend under conservatorship with extensive collections of jewelry, art, and other valuables. We were told that key staff at Fine Estate were well-acquainted with the conserved person and would be sympathetic and, we hoped, financially efficient in completing the work, understanding the high cost of memory care and the relatively young age of the conserved person. What a colossal mistake we made in entrusting this project to them. Fine Estate seems to be purposefully deceitful and exploitative, grossly incompetent, or both. We believe they charged us above-market rates, padded invoices, and incorrectly billed us for the appraisal, packing, moving, storage, and consignment services they provided. No one was accountable for the accuracy of the appraisal or whether it met industry standards. There was never a clear answer to questions we raised, instead "we will need to get back to you on that," seeming like they made up rules and billing practices as the appraisal progressed. We are appalled by their total lack of professional ethics. After reviewing the invoices, we found: a shocking 24 hours of charges for computer formatting of the appraisal document for $1560; padded expenses for the movers, sometimes over 40% of what should have been charged for packing and travel time; and an exorbitant flat rate for the appraisal of consigned items, with no substantiation of the cost. We spoke with other auction houses after we had engaged Fine Estate, and all agreed that their fees were outrageously high. We believed they were reputable because their team had former employees from other well-known auction houses, but we were wrong. We found their work to be careless to the point of negligence. Items were damaged, missing, mislabeled, misplaced, and inventoried incorrectly or incompletely, often resulting in what we believe to be gross undervaluation. For example, one box was appraised with a value of $10 with the description "kitchen scale and linens" but beneath the linens were an assortment of approx. 40 pieces of sterling and silver-plated flatware. Another box that contained a set of fine crystal stemware was labeled "cookbooks" and valued at $25. Finally, the photographs they provided were low-resolution and often just a photograph of the items still in the box, so it was difficult, if not impossible, to match the actual contents of the box with the appraisal. The valuations assigned to the consigned goods were artificially low, as their business model seems based on what their customers are willing to pay at their consignment shop, which operates monthly for a 3-day sale. We provided the receipt for one item that cost $3500, and Fine Estate appraised it at $150. Their appraisals are NOT fair market valuations, nor even secondary market valuations. Again, consigned goods are assigned much lower values to allow them to move inventory at their monthly sale. To wit, we had a collection of trade books, 60 boxes in total. The appraisal incorrectly included only 40 and valued the collection at $4k; at most, we would have received $2600 from the consignment. Instead, we found an independent buyer for the collection who paid us $25k. We also caution any potential clients of Fine Estate to look closely at the contract to understand the consignment fee structure. We were shocked to learn how deeply consignment items are discounted and how quickly their prices are further reduced: the item is put for sale at the artificially low appraised value on Friday, and if it doesn't sell, it is discounted by 25% on Saturday. If it doesn't sell on Saturday, it is further discounted by 25% on Sunday. When an item valued at under $1000 sells, their commission is 50%. So, if an item valued at $100 doesn't sell on Friday, it's marked down to $75 on Saturday. If it doesn't sell on Saturday, it's marked down to $56.25 on Sunday. If it sells on Sunday, the consignor will only receive $28.12 of the $100 appraised value. It's important to note how they've structured their 'refund' of appraisal fees on consignment items, too. It's customary with other firms that take goods on consignment to offer a 75%-100% refund on the appraisal fee for items consigned, but Fine Estate offers a refund on appraisal fees only if an item sells. This isn't clearly spelled out in the contracts we were given, and it seems to us an unfair and deceptive business practice that once again favors them over the consignor. We tried earnestly to work with Fine Estate to resolve our differences, but we could not reach a reasonable resolution. (Some minor adjustments were made to our invoices after we questioned them, but we remain wholly dissatisfied.) We are posting this review to warn others to beware of their nefarious business practices. read more

Incompetent. They bill themselves as an auction house and consignment shop but in reality, they are no better than a mom-and-pop garage sale operation. They do not keep good records. They damage or lose items that are in storage. They seem to write their own rules on standard industry practice. Their staff is nice people, but the directives by the owners -- Martin and Viletta -- often drive their appraisers to lowball the property value for their consignment shop. The consigners lose out, but buyers are happy as they get the deal of a lifetime. Take note the positive reviews here are buyers who scored big time on the purchase. If you intend to consign with Fine Estate Sales, DON'T. THESE PEOPLE DON'T HAVE SCRUPPLES. read more

Won an item, a collectable toy, from an auction run by Fine Estates in late April. Auction was for the toy and it's parts plus the original box the toy came in. Original packaging is always a plus with collectable toys. The item arrived and was well packed but the original packaging for the toy was missing. I reached out and attempted to explain the situation and they acted like it wasn't a big deal and were going to do nothing about it. Really surprised and upset with their unprofessional attitude. From the looks of other reviews, this operation is sketchy at best. Spend your money elsewhere. read more

I would like to thank Valetta and Martin for all the fabulous work they have done to help us downsize our huge home. At some point after my mom's health began to fail my brother and I realized liquidating the contents of her four-floor house perched on a San Francisco hill would have to be done by a full service, reputable company.Both my brother and I have health issues that prevent us from traveling to the city and to do physical labor, so our active involvement wasn't possible. The reality of the situation was revealed when I began reading "Liquidating an Estate", written by Martin Codina. All the house's contents had to be removed; items had to be sold, donated, or hauled to the dump, and the house left in a broom-clean condition. As I read the book I was struck by the author's thoroughness and his empathy for those who are left with the job of handling a friend or loved one's estate. Therefore, it was a pleasant surprise to read at the book's end that Martin owned and operated a full service liquidation service business serving San Francisco and the surrounding area. Online research confirmed his credentials and good standing in his industry. After an exchange of emails with Martin, he committed to take on our project when the need arose. What a relief! Their team effort was totally amazing. House contents from eating utensils to pieces of furniture were meticulously inventoried and individual items were tracked through the selling process. Items were sold on consignment in their showroom, auctioned off, or sold on eBay. Valuable items were extensively advertised in a variety of ways. The FES team applied their collective knowledge base to get the best prices. During the months items were sold, FES sent us detailed monthly reports of what was sold and how it was sold. Questions were answered promptly. The quality of customer service was simply top notch. In the end, we were extremely satisfied with what was accomplished, especially without any on-site presence on our part. For what we got and the amount of work they did, the rates were well worth it. Working with Martin and Valetta Codina is a delight. They're both kind, thoughtful, professional, and enthusiastic about their work. I help folks close out the estates of their loved ones, and hired Fine Estate Liquidations to hold an estate sale for one of my clients. The estate didn't have quite enough stuff left in it, but Martin brought additional items into the house (that he clearly marked as being from another source for accounting purposes) to sweeten the sale for shoppers, and it worked incredibly well. Most of the estate sold within a single weekend, with only a few things left to be sorted with the charity and recycling collectors afterwards. Everyone that Fine Estate works with is great, and spending time with them before, during, and after was really pleasant. The spreadsheet of the sale given to my client after was detailed and easy to read. My client was extremely pleased to be able to look up each item and see what it sold for. I can only imagine that if I was a client in mourning that their tact and professionalism combined with their thoughtfulness and kindness would be very comforting and helpful to get through the process. Fine Estate Liquidation is a total misnomer. I love estate sales and having been to many I can say that this group doesn't know what estate sale or liquidation means.. I think that they have the California outrageous price expectation working for them.. Their pricing is completely outrageous.. I have been to a few on site events hosted by them and have had the same experience. At the off site sale today they were selling old televisions for more than you could buy a new one right around the corner at best buy (yes same size).. A very worn leather couch and chair set for $800... Worn purses for $275 (although Chanel due to condition very overpriced).. I could go on but won't. I frequent estate sales in Dallas and when you go you know there will be great deals to be had. You guys should take a trip to Dallas to see how it's really done. Basically enjoyable - good quality items and OK prices on Sunday at 1/2 off. I did run into one fool, who referred to me as a know it all. I looked up our disputed item (whether Tahitian Pearls are natural or all cultivated) and it gives me a little satisfaction to report that at least on THIS item, I was right and he was WRONG! HA! I wrote him an email and got a half apology from someone, whom I suspect was not him. I suppose that is more than we can expect these days. read more

They open on time, provide coffee and donuts and have plenty of people to help answer your questions or help load your purchases. Checkout is very efficient and friendly.
