Nice beer place! A hidden gem indeed! Came here with coworkers for lunch, and I loved the ambiance. I enjoyed the travel notes (international IPA, mango and acai berries). They have a wide selection of beer, and some of them are weird like the salted cucumber (actually not bad- I tried a sip from my coworker's). I wish they had a wider food selection, but the chicken tamales was delicious. Chicken on point, juicy- couldn't have asked for more. I've been to this place so many times and definitely owed a 5-star review to it! Hands down my FAVORITE brewery ever! I've been living in the East Bay for almost 10 years and only learned about it last year, what a shame! However, since I knew about this place and paid the first visit, I've taken so many friends there and got so many of their crowlers! What I love about it: - All sour beers they have - There are so many and I've never tried a bad one! Other beers are fantastic too but I'm a huge sour beer fan! We even took a friend who normally only drinks wine and she's in love with the sours too! - Great vibe - This place is always filled with a friendly crowd. What's more? It's dog friendly! There are so many cute dogs around every time we visit and my friends can take theirs too for more human attention (he loves it!) - The grilled cheese - I mean I know it's basic and nothing fancy, but it's delicious! On a related note, you can also order food from outside to eat there with your beers. - Crowlers to take home - If you are in love with any beer you drink here, you can ask the staff to make a crowler (can + growler I guess) of 32oz to take home! You can also pre-order online and pick up. I've got them multiple times for friend's home parties and they got so many compliments! Of course I bought them to drink myself too:) - The friendly staff - If you can't make up your mind from the awesome selection of beers, you can ask them to sample a little. I usually enjoy Fieldwork Breweries - great beer selection, good atmosphere, and food (this location had a pizza stand outside). To put it in perspective, we did have a large group event (we had reserved about 6-8 large tables) at this brewery, but there were two waiters in particular that were very rude. We were yelled/chastised many times. Everytime they came around I felt nervous we were going to get in trouble again since we were taking up alot of space. I was personally yelled at twice for waiting for my drink order (I guess I was waiting in the wrong spot). I understand that a large crowd can be overwhelming, but I felt unwelcome and didn't want to order more drinks. At the end of the night, one of the waiters threw down the bussing crate on the ground next to us and told us to put our own trash away. We placed all our trash into the bin, and I awkwardly brought it back inside while they just stared at me. I know we probably made their jobs more challenging with having a large party, but I felt scared to get in their way. I won't be coming back to this location (esp won't be recommending), but love the San Mateo and San Ramon breweries. read more

One of my favorite breweries in California for sure. We came here on a Sunday around Noon and stayed for probably 4-5 hours with friends. Such a nice place to soak in the sunshine and juice bomb suds. They've definitely got it going on and deserve all the respective in the brewery world. $12 for a HUGE tasting flight of 6 beers? Don't mind if I do! After passing by the North Face outlet way too many times, we finally decided to stop in to this place. The place is farther from campus so it is more of a trek to get to, but if you're a biker you'll enjoy that they have bike racks inside the place. It's a larger location than I expected it to be with tons of seating outside w/heat lamps, long bench tables, stools, and barrels for those that want to stand inside. Surprised we nabbed a table on a Saturday night though! You order both food/drinks at the same place & they give you a number and bring what you ordered wherever you're sitting. It was easy to grab the bartenders attention once you walk up and they have people walking around constantly to clean up empty plates/cups. The ambiance is as hipster as it gets, but in a good way. They have tons of natural light and areas for large groups. It didn't feel crowded at all even though the place was packed. They have board games available in the back so you can grab some and bring them to your table.I do wish that they had other games like darts or bocce ball outside since they have tons of space! We got a flight with: Case de Citra, Shoreline, Travel Notes, Hugo, Churro, and Fetch. Fieldworks is my favorite bar in Berkeley. It's a small brewery but there are lots of perks - fresh beer and its dog friendly! The flights are a great way to try out a number of their flavors. I loved the empanadas when it was on their menu. The menu changes here and there so hopefully they will have empanadas when I return. Tamales are good too ($9). Wish the brewery was a little more centrally located in Berkeley, but it's worth the drive to get over there and check it out. read more

Ah Fieldwork, one of my go-to breweries when I'm ordering at Whole Foods and other local tap rooms...a good friend and I made the trek out here after a yoga class and absolutely loved it. The vibes and space feels so comfortable and spacious. The atmosphere is very much beer hall and dog-friendly. They have outdoor heaters which is amazing! We sat outside even in the cloudy weather, and enjoyed our empanadas and beer. Even when you're outside, there's a menu on the wall too so in case you forgot what you had, you can reference it. This is the second microbrewery I've been to that sells El Porteno's empanadas! WHOOT SF empanada's shutting it DOWN! I had the caprese, which was delicious and highly recommended. The place seems very friendly, especially gals who were running the food were SUPER accommodating and awesome. Parking is along the street, which is fine because there's like a suburban area closeby and what seems to be like a vintage/trinkets store nearby. All of the beers we tasted were impressive, but I wish we could have a more welcoming greeting from the taptender gal behind the bar when we ordered. We weren't offered to taste any beers, and it seemed like she wanted us to order and leave. Fair enough, but that would've really changed my experience here. The drinks come out fast and, from the ciders I've tried, taste super refreshing and nice. I'd recommend a little taster if you aren't sure, but also feel free to ask the waiter for their opinions. The food is also great too, I'd recommend any of their pizzas. If you want to go with a group, be prepared to make a reservation in advance, possibly by a week. After finally surrendering myself to the beer wall at Berkeley Bowl West, the beer buyer Brad tipped me off to Fieldwork having Pulp in cans that day. I thought to myself, I was supposed to just be making a quick store run and going back home... but eh! I don't have anything else to do right now and Fieldwork Brewing has been on my list ever since I stopped at the Taproom in Napa. I hop in GG and put the addy in the navigation. When I get there, I'm thinking are you serious??? All these days of going to the North Face Outlet and battling folks for coats, I could've been doing it with a beer buzz?? So I get out of my car thinking oh this looks real chill. I look around and everyone has cans on cans on cans of Pulp and Juice Packet. I go to the bar real nonchalant, thinking I have a flight and maybe take a few cans to go. One of the bartenders had to make it apparently clear that if I wanted cans, I needed to get them sooner than later. I decided to order 4 cans and do a flight of 3. I had the OverRipe, Jelly Packet and Pulp. The OverRipe was good. I'm usually not a sour fan, but Jelly Packet was pretty good, so I bought a crowler to go. Pulp was excellent. As I stood there enjoying my flight at the bar, I witnessed them sell out of Pulp. I thought to myself whew it's a good thing I bought mine! People were coming non stop! If they couldn't get a can, they wanted a crowler or a growler. But really, they have some really good beer here so I can understand the constant flow of people. Stopped in with a friend on a Saturday night for a pre-bedtime drink and ended up sharing a flight of tasters. I loved how everything about this place screamed hip and chill. The music blaring was a mix of 80s and 90s rock, and the lights outside lent a cozy glow to the industrial night sky. A tray of 6 tasters for $20 was a steal, and we ended up picking a mix of lagers and sours that I definitely partook more than my fair share of. The only one in our order that we did not finish was the Rainbow Parfait, which tasted exactly how it described itself but perhaps it was vanilla in a fruit sour that made the mix a little too odd for me. They have heaters outside but it looked like it might rain so we chose a table indoors. The samplers are very decently portioned for only $12. I liked the lager and the one from Vienna. i believe their menu changes so you might not necessarily get the same beer again. 3 hours ran off and that's always a sign of a great place. Fieldwork hit my radar when we landed at SFO and found a little airport bar to wind down in. I had a hazy IPA there and enjoyed it greatly, so when I saw that Fieldwork's taproom wasn't far from our Berkeley hotel I figured we should check it out. Immediately, the ambience of the place made me feel at home. There was a woman reading a comic book near us, a family with a two year old, and a nice patio with great planters and heaters. It was not at all busy or loud, but it was a Monday night. Also, this is a taproom inside a brewery, so while there are comfortable places to sit, talk, and enjoy beer, you are also treated to a fairly full view of the back-of-house operations of a large brewery. This means you see tanks, cans on pallets, and you smell malt. I love it. Also, the music selection was absolutely on point for the hour or so we were there. A somehow perfect mix of throw-back rock and some metal music. The 90s kids still hiding in our hearts were thrilled. The person putting together our flights was above-and-beyond helpful. We wanted to sample a fairly wide swath of their beers, and so he suggested several options and helped us avoid too much crossover between our two trays. On top of that, I really appreciate that they give you the opportunity to write out and keep with you the list of beers you're sampling--without that, I always lose track of what I've got, and what I liked. We're not local, but I'd absolutely return if we were in the neighborhood again. The only complaint I have (and it's not really their fault) is that the area is fairly commercial and didn't feel terribly walkable (about a 30 minute walk from the Bart). However, if you wanted to make a trip of it and Lyft into the area, it looks like there are several breweries within walking distance of this one. Though a number of their beers were quite tasty, the ones I liked the most were Broken Clouds, Shoreline, Imperial hot chocolate, and Heartbreaker. I've been liking sours more and more and heartbreaker certainly hit the spot. I'd definitely come by again on a good day, though it may get kinda dicey inside with how busy it gets. This place is rockin'. Always a crowd. And when it is peaking, it is far from chill zone, bordering on stressful. The product is decent enough if you're into these unique beers, but the clamoring to do anything here can be left to those that love the party atmosphere. Remember those college parties where you have to move sideways in order to get from one place to another. Yup it's kinda like that here. So when it is going, a single file line forms to place an order. It can reach the front door and beyond. And the bar is some 20 feet to the door so just paint that picture. It does move good though cuz there are several bartenders, but a bartender can only deal with an order at a time, and most orders are several pints worth. Got your beers, better of have had someone from your crew to snag some table space so you can chill. Don't be amongst the many that roam with beers in hand with no table to set beers on. Need to go to the bathroom, well yea, beer drinking will do that at some point. Go find the other line that is almost as long as the beer line. Except this one doesn't nearly move as fast, go figure. So I've been in 3 times and twice it's been like this. The other time I came on their last hour on a Sunday night and it was chill. Still a line to the bathrooms but everything else was chill and manageable. So I may venture in for night caps. Lots and lots of IPA's here. All brewed by them. I honestly don't know why there are so many (at least a dozen), but it's a bit daunting if you're not a regular. I've tried at least 6 of them, and don't think I've gotten anything twice, because they rotate faster than I frequent. Some good, some not really. All IPA's are not created equal. I prefer the ones that aren't so malty and I also don't care for the hazy ones. I like them to be crisp with a balanced firm hop backbone. And more pine-y, than tropical fruit. I found one (Sonic Bookmark) but don't know if it'll be there on my next visit. Last visit also tried some brews that weren't IPAs. An Alt Beer was nice and refreshing. Reminded me of a well made amber/red that were so popular during the 90's. And their Milk Chocolate Stout was really smooth and satisfying. So the brewery does have mad skills, but it's just in all the choices that can lead you elsewhere. Imma be back cuz I have a growler to refill and I found the times that are more conducive to me. SUMMARY: Dig this place so much! This is the epitome of what a brewery should be like: great chill crowd, people graciously sharing tables, dogs everywhere, and great beer! BACKGROUND: my good neighbor and fellow Yelp Elite friend Robert R took me to Fieldwork in Berkeley after dinner to meet up w/ his good buddy for some drinks at Fieldwork. I don't know the city too well or chill places to hang, so he thought this would be a good spot. He was right. BEERS What can I say. I had two beers there, can't remember what they were, but both were pretty darn good and I'd come back for them again. 5 of 5. I'd advise though if it gets crowded, order a double :) ATMOSPHERE Fieldwork is in a sort of industrial area and is a warehouse/brewery. But don't let that dissuade you. You just have to see for yourself. I'd say about 1/2 of their property is dedicate to serving their customers and a bar area that's open on two sides. Nice. They have a little outdoor patio area too that spans the front side of their building. The feel of the restaurant is very industrial but tastefully done. Long benches are what you're going to be sitting on, so if you're not of the sharing seating type, this place isn't for you. The patio is a little different though, but again be prepared to squeeze next to people you don't know and don't be an asshat and hog the seating. BIKE FRIENDLY Upon entering there's wall mounted bike hooks for your ride. Nice touch. DOG FRIENDLY Bring fido. Totally cool. I think this is a great brewery. Great beer, lots of selection and good stuff constantly being made. Been here a couple times before Covid. The remaining times I went here were during Covid to pick up beer I bought on line. The process is great and it's generally great beer. Why only 2 stars? Because three straight times I bought a four pack that was flat as paper. When you're paying 20 bucks for four beers, the beers better be fresh. I thought the first time was a rarity. The second time an anomaly. But three times? I emailed them about it and they didn't give two sh!ts. They got my money, why should they care? Right? And I'm not going to lie - I'm the stupid one for going here the third time after the first two. A couple guys on my softball team (who also come here a lot) said they had this too (not three times though). So it's not just me. 60 bucks for flat beer. That's the last 60 bucks I spend here. And I like the place and I like their beer but this is not how you treat a good customer. And judging by the response I got when I complained about the flat beer, they also don't care if someone who likes their place stops going there. So I just want people to know. Loved it all! The beer, the setting, the service - everything! My bestie wanted to take me to her favorite brewery, Fieldwork Brewing Co. after exploring Berkeley, and when we came here on a late afternoon on a weekday, the place was packed! Fortunately, we were able to snag two seats at a table. But most of the seating here consists of picnic tables that everyone shares, which I thought was cool because the vibe here was awesome. There's nothing like going to a brewery where everyone socializes and there's DOGS around! People seemed to make friends with strangers and enjoy each other's company. Service is also awesome, and you can tell the employees love their beer and what they do. They'e happy to make recommendations, and will go around the tables and quickly take away empty glasses and ask if anything else is needed, even with how packed it was during my visit here. You order at the counter, and for food - they'll deliver to your table. I ordered a flight of beers, which can include up to six beers. As my friend said to me with the drafts they had, it was my day because there were so many IPAs! And I still can't tell you which was my favorite, but the beer is exceptional. I loved it all, especially Travel Notes, an IPA made with acai berries and mango! It was refreshing, as if you could drink it all day on a beach, but had those hops that make up my favorite part of any beer! And even the non-IPA, the Salted Coconut Porter I had tasted like salted caramel and coconut mixed together! The beers are inventive, flavorful and memorable. I came here with my uncle as well as my cousin in law, who suggested that we come here and check it out as he comes here often with coworkers. We bought a couple of beers and had some good conversation. The beers that were on tap that caught my eye was the Eliza. That dark goodiness is always what I always tend to go towards. The coffee, the dark chocolate notes are what always get to me. Thinking that my uncle would like bitter stuff, I also ordered the nine trizzay, but nope. He enjoyed the Eliza more. There's plenty of seating, but there was a ton of people here. There's a huge menu on the chalk board, and well you will probably have ample of time to check it out. They also have board games (at least that's what we saw) and food. I believe you could order some food items, but I don't know how extensive the menu was. When you walk in though, don't be surprised that there's a line. Their beers are their main drawer. I enjoyed their Eliza, but for me IPAs are probably not going to be a winner for me. It's clear as soon as you walk in that this brewery is known for their IPAs. For someone like me, who does not like IPAs, it was still hard for me to dislike this place! The brewery itself has a bright, open, beer hall type of feel, with outdoor seating as well. If you don't find a seat at the many tables, there is plenty of standing space. There are many beer options, though mostly IPAs. They do offer flights, each tasting at a different price depending on the beer you choose. Tip: if you don't like IPA's, check out the churro beer! We ordered the tamale and grilled cheese sandwich-- both pretty average for the cost. The sauce on the tamale had a nice kick to it but, other than that, wasn't really memorable. Same with the grilled cheese.. all we get on the side are 3 pickled string beans? Despite the fact that the place was busy and bustlin', we were helped right away.The employees were all so friendly and helpful-- from the moment we got there and were analyzing the tap menu, to the frequent checkins when we were enjoying our food and drinks, to the help we receiving when we were waiting for our to-go cans. An hour after my flight touched down in Oakland, I had a flight of beer in front of me....and what a flight it was. Hands down, Fieldwork is an awesome brewery. For starters, Fieldwork has a fantastic location. Corner shop, plenty of street parking, indoor bike rack- say what? Yes, you can hang your bike inside against the wall. The seating is plentiful- bar stools, picnic style tables inside and out. Board games are also there. I didn't play any but next time I'll make sure to play something and win. You know, all I do is win-win-win! Fieldwork serves some food and while it smells good, I didn't come for food. I came for beer. My flight consisted of 4 beers. 1. Morning Time 2. Chocolate Milk 3. Salted Coconut 4. Vanillaoak They were all enjoyable, but my absolute favorite was the Chocolate Milk. It's amazing- beer that tastes like chocolate milk. This is my dream come true. Chocolate- from the cocoa bean, bean is protein- protein is good for muscles....and milk, it does a body good...therefore Chocolate Milk beer is the breakfast of champions. The staff was super friendly and the vibe was cool. I'm sure it helped that I went in with someone who practically keeps the place in business, but the truth is, they were nice and friendly with all the patrons. I'll be back! read more

We love it here, however for the first time ever the beers tasted flat and lacked depth. We ordered the exact same beers and something was more fizzy but flat and lacked the opening flavor in all of them. Just a heads-up if the beers aren't stored correctly or if they have had bad batches recently.. read more

For someone that does not like beer, I really enjoyed this brewery. A few beer enthusiast recommended this place to come to and we had such a great time. Great five and staff and I like the snacks that they also sell while you drink beer. read more

Disclaimer: I almost did not want to write a review because this is one of those places that you don't want to share because you don't want anyone to sit in your seat. ---------------------------------------------------- As part of my job, I do a lot of "fieldwork" as in I get to "work" out in the "field" a lot. As one of the perks, I get to drive all around Northern California and when I do I try to visit as many local breweries that I can. From San Francisco (Almanac Beer Company) to Healdsburg (Bear Republic), Chico (Sierra Nevada) to Santa Rosa (Russian River), San Leandro (Drakes) to San Jose (Hermitage)... I have definitely been doing my part in helping out with California's drought by saving water and drinking more beer. So, after analyzing my extensive "field" notes I have come to the conclusion that Fieldwork Brewing Company is the best fucking brewery in Northern California. Bar none... or should I say beer none. I mean, even with all the breweries opening up, Fieldwork Brewing Company stands out because they brew beers with flavor and character. I even bet that if Dos Equis guy tried Fieldwork, he would have to declare that Fieldwork and their-most-interesting-beers-in-the-world is pinche "Tres Equis" as in XXX sexy. Fieldwork opened its doors in northwest Berkeley in February of 2015. And thank goodness that they did because I started to get sick of the same old beer the way Nate Dogg felt when he sang the chorus for Tupac that every other city he went to he saw the same... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCf8iejBdp8 Fieldwork is great because they have a flavor for everyone, they are open every day, and they are dog-friendly! So let me talk about some of the beers I tasted. My favorite was the Good Conduct (12%). The Good Conduct is a bourbon barrel aged maple imperial brown that is aged in Wild Turkey barrels. And anyone that knows me knows that I love bourbon because whiskey is pretty much stronger beer! The beer was complex and smooth and had some caramel and toffee notes. At 12% it is definitely for sipping, but wow was it ever fantastic. Another great beer was the Hot Chocolate (6.6%) on nitro that tasted like spiked hot chocolate! What makes it amazing is that not only does Fieldwork use TCHO chocolate, cinnamon, and nutmeg to add flavor to this beer, Fieldwork really did a play on the name of the beer because this beer is HOT! As in spicy. They add cayenne and ancho chilies! So good. The Meloncotte (6%) was another delicious beer. It is a tart beer that is a mix of an apricot saison and a salted watermelon brett gose! And really, you can taste the melon notes. The great thing is that it is a sour that isn't too sour. So even the IPA crowd might enjoy this beer that would be perfect for the summer. They also have IPAs that are not your ordinary IPAs. Their Monsoon Double IPA (8%) is a hoppy beer that had hints of cantaloupe and citrus. The Chisel (6.8%) is a fruity IPA that had tropical and citrus notes. And the Moraine Brett IPA (7.1%) is a hoppy beer that has pineapple and white wine grape tastes. Therefore, if you want to try the most flavorful beers in Northern California, you must visit Fieldwork Brewing Company. I would even argue that Fieldwork Brewing Company is as much a destination in Northern California as the Golden Gate Bridge! read more

I love Fieldwork beer so much that I planned my 28th birthday here last month with family and friends! Such a great place to hang out and super chill crowd. You can bring little ones and fury pets. They don't discriminate here. One of my favorite things is that they're super cool with you bringing outside food like Cheeseboard Pizza so support local businesses! I will say that the food they serve here is delicious so if you haven't tried anything on their menu, I would highly recommend trying them all. As for their beer options, I love them all. From the pale ales, IPAs, to the stouts, you'll definitely find a beer that you'll love. If you're thinking of planning an event or birthday I recommend coming early and saving your spot. It does get busy on the weekends around 1pm. I came here on a Saturday and at 12pm it wasn't as crowded but as soon as 1pm came around, the place was packed. They do also have a room that you can reserve but I think it's like $75 an hour. All around great place, delicious beers and yummy food! I would be surprise if you didn't like this place. Woohoo! It's a Berkeley Beer Renaissance! Not much more than a year ago, the industrial wilds of West Berkeley were a barren craft beer wasteland.* In that short time, however, the Torpedo Room (Sierra Nevada's only taproom outside of a brewery) & the Rare Barrel (an all-sour beer company) both opened their doors for business in this previously devoid side of town. & now there's Fieldwork Brewing Co., a full-blown craft brewery, out on Berkeley's West side, North of Gilman. As soon as I heard about this place, I pedaled right over after work. Oh yeah, working around these parts & being a bicycle commuter most days, I have a keen interest in West Berkeley's beer scene. Located on a corner, the outside of the squat, square, olive-colored building they're in isn't much to look at. The vast but Spartan interior isn't much to look at either, at this point. Considering they haven't yet had their official grand opening, I'm sure they'll be filling in the blanks as they go along. What they do have is lots of shiny new stainless steel tanks for making beer. While surveying the brewhouse setup, I wound up meeting the brewmaster, Alex. With his brewing experience at Ballast Point & Modern Times down in San Diego, & with my love for the whole SD beer scene, it was a great conversation. But, beer is what brought me here, so it was time for some tastes & for some full pours. Fieldwork Brewing started out with just 5 beers on tap. I tried them all, naturally. For the very 1st batches out of a brand new brewhouse, this was some good stuff. I liked all of it, to varying degrees. I've even already taken growlers of Fieldwork Brewing's stuff to beer nerd friends & it's been well-received. It's a promising start to West Berkeley's newest beer addition. I'm sure I'll be back, a lot. It's close to my work. It's practically on the way home for me.
