I've got nothing against this salon. Actually, I thought it was kind of cool. But I didn't love my haircut here. I think the key thing I've learned about booking salon appointments is to NOT be the first appointment of the day. So, take note, folks. Learn from my mistakes. I went to see Lauren (she's no longer at this salon) on a recommendation of a good friend of mine. She has curly hair; I do not. She loves Lauren and swears by her. I really think it's a curly hair thing. So, I beat Lauren to the salon. And I don't think she'd had her coffee yet (pretty sure she asked one of the other girls to get her something when she went out - it's been awhile). Bad sign? But, she was cute, young and hip so I was immediately pleased with that. I had brought some photos of a previous haircut that I LOVED and basically wanted repeated. Now, I know it's kind of ... rude? ... to ask a stylist to copy someone else's cut. That's probably bad etiquette. But, I was willing to let her have some creative license with the style - and told her so. I was just trying to give her an idea of what I wanted. I did not get the style I previously had and loved. I almost didn't even get bangs (which is one of the things I really wanted). But, I did get a pretty cute cut. I'm sure Lauren is great for curly hair. I've seen it; she does good work. I think my mistake was that I was her first appointment on a Saturday morning. I might be back to Fiddleheads to try out someone else. read more

I'm currently transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. I had no idea what to do with it, but Vicky was awesome in helping me figure it out. She was quick, thorough, and gave me a great deva cut and style. She also walked me through what to do at home and what products to use. I'll definitely return. I'll also note that the feel of the salon is really laid back. I went into to see Beth for a consultation prior to doing anything to my hair and she was also extremely helpful. 5 stars! I scheduled a visit to see Vicky and it was probably one of tbe best decisions of my life. I walked in and was immediately greeted by some lovely ladies at the front desk. They offered tea or water and a seat while Vicky finished with her previous client. The salon had a lot of natural light, light rock music playing the background and everyone looked happy. Good ambiance. When it was my turn, Vicky asked many questions wanting to learn more about my curly routine. She was so patient answering my questions too. While she worked on my curls, she gave me tons of advice on my hair type. When it was dryer time, she offered me another beverage and made sure i was comfortable. I am very pleased with the outcome. Went to the Bloomingdales location and first off I did not like that the salon didn't have it's own parking lot. I had to park in the street and as I was walking to the salon I was being harassed by young guys. Don't get me wrong I was brought up in DC so I'm not surprised but it's really uncomfortable experiencing this when your just trying to go get a hair cut. Anyways back to my review, I was greeted by the receptionist she was really nice and attentive. I had an appt with Wangui and was not impressed.. I asked for an asymmetrical bob haircut and she said she was tired of doing that cut so she wanted to do something else? Seriously... That's unprofessional. Anyways I heard she does AWSOME cuts and knows what she's doing so when she asked me to let her do her "thing" which supposedly she said it would be fun, sexy, and look great. IT DIDNT.! It looked partially OKAY For one she kept talking how so KNOWS curly hair blah blah first off if you know curly hair you know not to cut parts too short because it looks puffy. Well that's exactly what she did. Now I'm waiting to grow my hair out so I can go to another salon that will be way better then what she did. $85 waisted and I'm really upset. They took my update off Yelp: So it's been 4 months my hair has grown out some. Wangui was supposed to cut my hair in a way it would look good straight. Well guess what? I have straightened it and it looks horrid. To the point were I rather not have it straight because it looks like I ran into a 5 year old with scissors. Remember when I said in my first review that she cut parts really short? Well it was in the front and one side is a good even length on my shoulders than the other side is is up to my jaw!!! Wow, the new salon looks amazing and ladies please do not sleep on the location it is not as bad as some may claim in thier reviews. I took the metro and I had not problems. Just got out of Corrine's chair and couldn't be happier. I wanted to go much, much shorter, but I have a super round face so I was a tad bit nervous. I described what I wanted and showed her a pic of Michelle Williams' pixie-type hair. She got it and went to work. She checked in a few times to make sure I was ready for her this short, which was appreciated. Long story short (purposeful pun): my hair is beyond adorable and better than I could have expected. I keep looking at myself in the mirror, I am just so happy with the cut. She also does the perfect amount of chat and time flies by. Price is completely standard for this part of DC. I'm Caucasian with a Scottish/Irish/English background and that kind of curl and texture. I have wanted my hair long my entire life. I'm 58 and still trying to grow it completely out. Since I was at the usual point of "lose my mind or cut my hair off," I decided instead to try the Deva method one more time and get a consult at FIddleheads I had been there a couple of years back and couldn't seem to make it work when I got home. I vowed this time would be different. Beth booked me a consult with Vicky, and Vicky explained it all to me. I made an appointment for a cut the next day. While Beth was making the appointment for the cut, I asked about putting in a little extra time. For one, my hair is extremely thick, and for two, this was still sort of a teaching moment, She said no, 1 hour was enough. It wasn't. Some guy came in wanting a hair cut and talked with Vicky during my shampoo (omg srsly must you); before I knew it I was sitting with a sopping wet mop of hair under one of the stationary cone dryers, and Vicky was cutting someone else's hair. I sat as long as I could stand it but it's hot in there. When I took myself out from under it, Vicky came over and started working with my hair and teaching me how to style it a bit, but that left her customer whose hair was being cut sitting there with her hair sectioned off ... So the thing is, they do great work, but it's not a luxe salon experience. The $75 price tag for the cut is fair because you're paying for specialized expertise -- you're not paying for anyone to particularly pamper you. Consequently here I am with 3rd day hair and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing right now. See, this is why people quit the method. I would give it 4+ if I could, don't get me wrong. For Curly Girls, this is where it's at. Just make sure you get all the instruction you need, no matter how many people get worked in to your appointment. read more

Way back in the day, I used to have short hair, and I loved it. Over the past few years I've grown my hair out. It has worked, but not always perfectly. This post chronicles the past year of my hair styles, brought to me by Tina at Fiddleheads, and my decision to never go elsewhere in DC. In fact, I am going back for a cut tonight! Last summer (July 2009) I decided I needed a change. I have curly hair and wanted something new and hip. Bangs? Bangs. Keep in mind I hadn't had bangs since kindergarten. This was a big deal. So I asked Tina about bangs, short bangs, and she was with me all the way. She gave me a great cut and medium length bangs. When I asked her to go shorter she got really excited and snipped away. I loved them. As the bangs grew out she adjusted and worked with me. Whenever I have a vision she has the ability to interpret what I want and execute it. A few months ago I went to get my hair cut short. To bring out the curl even more and give me a fresh look for summer. The great thing about her cuts is that I walk out looking great and as the weeks go by and my hair starts growing out, it still looks fabulous! Tonight I am going super short, for the first time ever, and I know Tina will make it work! Their staff is friendly, I never wait long, and it is a fun environment. read more

I was in a dire need of a cut and color a couple of weeks ago before a big event. I didn't want to come back here but all of my friends' hair stylist were booked to the T at the last minute, so I resorted to this place again. Lauren was rude and unpleasant--like always and didn't really ask me what I wanted done. She wanted to get me out of the chair and collect her money and tip so she could continue to talk about how she hates mainstream people who conform to society (she was talking about this when I came in to another employee). My hair turned out brassy--again--and the cut was not layered as I had asked, but for some reason it looked puffy. I thought I resembled my cousin's--may he RIP--dead poodle. I waited a few weeks to write this to chill out and see if the color toned down and the hair got a little better. However, now I just have a little longer poof with some roots. Thanks Lauren! As I was about to write a yelp review I got a follow up email the next day so I decided to express my experience in an email to them instead hoping that they would respond, they never did. This is the edited version of my experience as I don't like to use names. Just a little background to start, I am a black woman with natural hair and I have avoided salons for the last 10 years as I have never had a good experience. I have been natural for 2 and I am at my wits end. Wanting to just cut it all off or at least try this Deva cut that everyone keeps talking about I made an appointment with Fiddle heads completely based on their reviews on yelp. I arrived and my scheduled hair dresser asked me how I was doing and I indicated that I was very nervous. She was very nice during this entire process, but I honestly believe that she and I both knew mid-process that she did not know what to do with my hair. I asked her whether she does natural hair and she said we all do. My hair was sticky from a product that I had in it so she wanted to wash it and conditioned it under a dryer. While under the dryer another young lady walked in for a cut so the poor scheduled hair dresser ran back and forth from me to this girl. Is this normal (I haven't been in a salon in a while) or was she double booked? The scheduled hair dresser was very gentle she finger de-tangled my hair, washed it, put a conditioner in it, I sat underneath the dryer, finger de-tangled with a curling agent and then sat under the dryer again. Thank you for making the choice not to just cut my hair, many hair stylists would have just done it just to get the money. During the process my scheduled hair dresser mentioned that I should come back to see the owner so she could take a look at my hair for a consultation (I thought this was what I was getting) another indication to me that my scheduled hair dresser was under qualified to do my hair (natural). I suppose this comment could be disputed, but along with the comments she made the #1 indicator was she didn't put any oil in my hair so when I went home I had to do so or my hair would shrink and dry up. I got what I paid for, a wash and condition not what I wanted or needed. Fiddle Heads has high ratings and I can understand why, the 2 woman that were there seemed very happy with their hair. Fiddle heads is a nice salon, but I mistakenly confused curly with natural black hair. read more

I went to Vicky in October and she did an excellent job! She was kind and friendly and was very supportive of curly hair. I say this because so many stylist that I go to act like having curly hair is such a burden. I left and felt so great. My hair didn't love the Deva products but that is okay. I have the shape that I needed to make my wash and gos seamless. read more

Having curly hair it is VERY hard to find someone who knows how to cut it just right and after reading the Yelp reviews I decided to give Fiddleheads a try. I ended up having Vicki cut my hair and she did an amazing job! She takes about two hours to cut the hair and defuse it, but afterwards my curls were so nice and tight and it looked wonderful. I have been going to her ever since for my haircuts and have no complaints! This past Fall I decided I wanted to dye my hair a dark brown and went to a different salon, but when I needed a haircut I figured I would have Fiddleheads touch up my roots. Vicki was out of town so I saw Corrine. Corrine did a great haircut but a horrible job with my roots. The job was rushed and turned out a bright red completely different from the brown in my hair. At the end of the appt. she could see I was not happy and said if the color didn't settle down in a few days that I could come back and get it redone. The color was completely wrong and I came back a few days later. She was happy to re-do the color, but once I saw the final color it looked EXACTLY THE SAME. I still had red in my hair and then towards the end of the appointment she proceeded to almost blame me for the fact that they couldn't match my original color. Why not tell me that ahead of time instead of charging me $60-80?? I ended up getting a box of dye and redoing it myself and THAT looks 10x better. Fiddlehead does a great cut, but I would avoid color there. read more

After a semi-disastrous hair cut experience at another salon, I decided to give the Bloomingdale salon a try. Wangui cut my hair, and she is AWESOME. Unlike so many other stylists in DC who seem too busy to listen or to treat you like a person rather than a source of revenue, Wangui took the time to listen to me describe the type of cut I wanted (along with explanations of my ridiculously thick curly/wavy hair), review some photos, and offer feedback. During the cut she was friendly and discussed the process (checking on length + specific problems I was having with the old cut to make sure we were fixing them). The result was a hair cut I love (finally!). You can tell Wangui loves what she does, and she is really good at it. Bonus: The salon accepts cards, to which you can add a tip. They also email a receipt to you, so no wasted paper. read more

My Deva Cut appointment was with Vicky and she was awesome! She listened to my hair "issues" (I have two completely different textures and no shape or style) and she knew exactly how to proceed with cutting it. I enjoyed talking to her - she has a great personality, very knowledgeable about curly hair and kept me informed every step of the way. I didn't mind that the combination of styling products were a little heavy because my hair is super thick. My curls were well moisturized and still looked good the next morning after a little spritzing. I would definitely recommend Vicky to anyone wanting to try a Deva Cut. read more

My mom and I went to the salon for the first time yesterday. We both had our natural curls previously cut at another salon while our hair was straightened. When our hair curled back up it was much different in shape. We both went to Beth to get our first Deva cut. Beth was very knowledgeable and listened really well. She was very easy to talk to as well which is a plus. My mom and I both have different textures of hair with mine being thick with kinkier curls while my mom's is thin with much looser curls. Beth took her time cutting my hair, co washed, finger detangled, conditioned, and added gels to my curls before sitting me under the dryer. The air from the dryer was cool which was nice because I knew my curls wouldn't be damaged. I will definitely be back to get a trim from Beth. I went to Beth at Fiddleheads because I have curly hair and someone recommended her. I was looking for a specific shape and my old cut was pretty close to that, so I thought it would work out OK. Nope. If you want the standard curly haircut (lots of layers all around, shorter around your face), she is the person to go to. But not if you want anything different. Specifically, I wanted it to be just past my chin, longer in front, and subtly layered in the back. I really hate having shorter pieces ("face framing layers") in front and asked for it to be longest in front. I also told her to go easy on the layers, but that I didn't want a triangle shape either. I ended up with the front being shorter and almost no layers anywhere else. I was pretty dissatisfied and went back for a re-cut. I told her to make it even with the pieces in front and to put some more layers in. I ended up with short pieces in front, AGAIN, and due to my curls, they end up even shorter when dry (eye level!). She just didn't get it. She did manage some tolerable layers in back that helped the shape. But I have been fighting with the short pieces in front for almost 3 months now. read more

My girl Vicky held me down! From the moment I stepped in the door, I felt welcomed and unjudged. Especially considering my full heat damaged natural hair was out looking a mess and this was my first time in a non-ethnic salon. I came on recommendation and the plan was a major change, big chop. Vicky and I looked through some pictures I saved and decided what I would go for. She began cutting and the conversation started flowing! To say it felt like I already knew her is an understatement. Once she got through the cut, shampoo, and styling I immediately knew I wanted to go shorter. However, she had another appointment waiting so without hesitation, she offered to have me come back and fix it how I wanted it. I was blown away by how generous and humble she was to just want to make sure I left happy. I came back and she did just that and more. Trust me-- you need to go see Vicky!! I have fine, 3A hair, and I've always had a hard time finding a stylist that knows what to do with it. I went in looking to get some layers without taking too much length off, and Vicky did not disappoint. The length of my hair didn't really change, but the layers added so much volume and dimension. The cut has also grown out really nicely (it's been about three weeks). Vicky was also super sweet and very pleasant to talk to. This salon is so warm and welcoming, and Corrine is fantastic! I went to Fiddleheads after a disasterous experience at another salon in the city. As a curly haired gal, I have had plenty of horrible haircuts and went to Fiddleheads due to their curly-haired cut reviews on Yelp. I only had to wait a week for an appointment -- bonus. When I went to see Corrine, my hair was a lampshade mess (curly girls, you know what I mean) with brassy, yucky highlights, which were a legacy from the we-don't-know-WTH-we-are-doing salon I visited 2 months earlier. Corrine listened to me, asked great questions, and gave me a great, great, great cut and fixed my horrible hair color. She is obviously skilled in cutting curly hair and knows her color products well. I was so happy when I left her chair, and I felt like I had finally found a salon home in DC! The only con was the price. It was a little hefty, but I'll deal. If you have curly hair, go see Corrine at Fiddleheads. (Actually, every stylist is trained in the Deva technique, so any of them will work magic on your hair.) read more

Let's get serious, people. When you have curly hair, you can let a lot of things slide about a salon in order to get the right cut. Yes, this salon could be slightly more professional, but I personally appreciate the down-to-earth attitude there. They have been flexible with me rescheduling my appointment as necessary. I've been educating myself about my wavy/curly hair, and I decided I wanted to give the dry cutting method a shot. All the stylists are trained in dry cutting, but I wouldn't call what I received a Deva cut. A deva cut is supposed to be cut curl by curl whereas Vicky more or less just shaped my overall head while it was dry. I have been twice, and both times, I was very skeptical as the process was going on. I am so used to being disappointed in my haircut that I've almost just resigned myself to accept less than perfect. Despite my skepticism, my hair has come out looking great both times! Maybe slightly shorter than what I expected, but nothing drastic. I fully recommend Vicky as a stylist, and I may come back and increase my rating if my hair keeps looking so good. read more

I will not let anyone but Beth touch my hair. She's seen me through short, long, and in between. My curls have never looked better. A male friend of mine with coarse, wavy hair had just about given up on his hair before coming to Fiddleheads. She's a genius. She's given me free touch-ups and got me a great price on a professional grade blowdryer. She sells all of the products she uses, but she doesn't try to push you into buying anything you don't want. And if you come in with a friend on a Friday night, you can crack open a bottle of wine and have a girls' night while getting your hair cut. Thanks, Beth! read more

I had my hair cut last week, at Fiddleheads in Washington DC. Beth, who usually tackles the job, has just had a baby and wasn't available, and so Tina agreed to wield the scissors. I have a lot of hair. (I used to think it was a compliment when hairdressers pointed this out, but since watching Shear Genius on Bravo, I now know that they SO don't mean it in a good way). Tina was trying to suggest a grooming regime just a couple of steps up from my usual "wash and go" approach to coiffure. "You can never have enough conditioner" she said, slathering on a handful a couple of times during the cutting process. I agree. I add a little conditioner mixed with water every morning before work, but it never seems to make a blind bit of difference. "You can do lots with it" said Tina, tackling the mop with a fat, round brush. " Next time you come, bring photos and I'll give you a whole new look" I have sorted through "100 ways with hay" and know that I have featured all of the looks above. I am skeptical that other improvements can be made-or will last. Tina blow-dried my furze into submission and it looked very good, in a sort of 60s Cilla Black kind of way. Tina's parting words were as follows" Sleep on it, it will be even more smooth in the morning" I was frankly incredulous because, for the last 30 years I have woken up looking like a mixture between Marg Simpson, the Irish TV painter Frank "Haystack" Clarke, and a person who just had an electric shock. Smooth, my hair isn't. But perhaps Tina was indeed a miracle worker? I emerged into the humid heat of Washington DC and went to bed that evening feeling well pleased. Sadly, however, the mirror the next morning revealed not silken tresses but a wiry high-rise bird's nest. A deep sigh, a fistful of some coconut conditioner and back to business as usual. read more

I don't know why y'all are hating on Lauren. I work at Mr. Yogato (down below Fiddleheads), and I decided to let her give me a trim. She talked me into chopping a bunch of it off - and it looks absolutely adorable. She really listened to what I wanted, but also talked to me about what would work with my hair/face. What's even more surprising, I have STICK straight hair. She did an amazing job with my pin straight locks, and I would go back in a second! I think that Fiddleheads is a great store, and all of the gals there are great! read more

I have to say that this was the first time I have gotten my curly hair cut at a real salon. In the past, I went to Paul Mitchell the School and Hair Cuttery, so I was expecting an upgrade, and that's what I got. Tina did a great job first consulting with me about what I wanted and did the cut fairly quickly and well. The atmosphere of the salon is neat- they have headresses from the drag queen Halloween race on display. I definitely recommend this salon for a fairly basic cut but I can't speak to anything drastic. I arrived with long hair, and I left with long hair, layers, and no more split ends! It was more expensive than I'm used to- $60 pre-tip, but I think you get what you pay for. read more

Fiddleheads is without a doubt the ONLY salon I've been to (in my entire life) that knows how to cut curly hair correctly. I have extremely thick, very long, very dry and curly hair. I usually see Vicky, and she always does a fantastic job. My hair is always layered perfectly by Vicky, and she always seems to know exactly what would make my hair look its best. Other salons have really messed up my layers or not shaped it right- but I've never had that problem at Fiddleheads. I always walk out of Fiddleheads feeling like a million bucks because my hair looks so much better after the appointment! The price is a bit higher than I wish it was, but it's probably only a bit above average for most nice salons in the DC area. It is definitely worth it to me though. :) read more

It's been over a month since I got my hair cut here by Lauren, and I still get compliments on it regularly. I've got pretty difficult hair (half of it is curly and half is straight--wavy at best--and it's got varying amounts of volume) and usually when I go into salons the hair dresser I sit down with has no clue what to do with me. I've gone to several other places asking them to cut my hair short and they flat out say no to me b/c they didn't think they could make it work. Well, I decided to take a gamble that the curly half of my head might be a good match for Fiddleheads and I am so glad that I did. Lauren knew exactly what to do with it, giving me my dream hair cut with flawless spunky precision. I wish I could count the number of people at work who stop to comment on my hair still, because it's pretty remarkable. I also really loved the atmosphere at Fiddleheads- it's totally comfortable and laid back which is so refreshing after being to countless salons where I feel like I'm being judged like a new girl at school. After reading the Yelp reviews, I wanted to love this place, however, I did not. After moving, I thought I'd found a replacement for Ouidad, which was near my previous home. Sadly, the stylist+Fiddleheads did not work out for me. I left the salon with some fuzzy hair rather than defined curls. Also, the stylist "blended" the front and the result was one side about 5 inches shorter than the other (I wasn't going for this look and hoped the left and right would be even). Yes my husband, who never notices hair cuts, even made a comment. I also told the stylist that my hair is curlier on top and straighter in the middle. I requested the top layer not be too short, well six months later it is still growing out and for the first two months looked like I had two distinct layers of hair. Upon leaving the stylist said if I didn't like anything to come back and they would "fix-it". Though one bad experience like this was enough for me. Thanks to TRIM for fixing me up after this experience. We all love a good haircut so for those Fiddlehead lovers, I hope your good cuts continue, but for those of you with multiple textured or fine hair, this might not be the place for you. I got a good haircut from Lauren. She really took her time, paying attention to the way each of my curls naturally fall. It took her a long time to dry my hair, and I liked the way I looked after she was done. I have shoulder length hair, and I think I paid $60. However, the hairwashing was a terrible experience because the salon did not have a proper chair. I was put in a hard plastic chair and told to lean back into the sink. This hurt my neck. Also, during the long time I spent in the chair between Lauren's careful cutting and the styling, I had to listen to Lauren and the hairdresser at the next chair jabber away. Lauren pretty much ignored me and made no effort to be friendly, so although the cut was good, the experience was rather unpleasant. For that reason, I have avoided going back and now a haircut is long overdue. Instead of returning to Fiddleheads, I am going to try Glynn Jones because I saw the ad in the City Paper that offers 10% off, and because I want to try another Deva trained stylist. The controversy raging over whether or not GJ is abusing yelp is not encouraging, but I figure it is not Jannah's fault and I want to give her a try. My only experience with the salon so far has been on the phone making the appointment. The person who answered was polite, professional, and friendly, so I am hopeful. read more

I've received Deva cuts here from both Michelle and Vicky and I can safely say I LOVE this salon. I was nervous getting my first haircut in DC since, as anyone with curly hair knows well, it can be hard finding someone who knows how to cut it well. Fiddleheads specializes in curly hair, which made me much more comfortable trying them out. They really take time to cut for your curl pattern and find out what works. They can be running late on appointments, but it's worth waiting for the cut. I just got one last week and my hair looks great! read more

I had my cut color and style done by Wangui. I've always had great experiences with Wangui, girl talk, great service, and very knowledgeable about the products and how to do hair. She also has a very good eye for what looks good and will be very honest about styling options. This is very hard to find. I've been to some places where people just put whatever in your hair, and I've had more horror stories than I care to share. Wangui I trust, Wangui will not tell me wrong and always strives to do an excellent job. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE WANGUI, and will always refer her to other people. I hope she stays in DC, because I don't know where I would go or who I could go to to get the same quality of service that I get with her. A++++++ read more
