The staff are very friendly here. It's a cute restaurant. We sat upstairs so the service was a little slow, but we didn't mind it since we had the time. It looked like they have outdoor seating for when it's nice out. We would love to check it out in the warmer seasons. I love the inspiration of the Korean fusion dishes. The soy garlic chicken wings were our favorite. We did an order of half soy garlic and half the spicy. I did have high hopes for the gochujang pasta, but the flavor was a lacking a little seasoning and the pasta was also a little over cooked. The beet salad was solid and refreshing. Korean food: 1-Star. Non-Korean food: 3.5-4. Really wanted to love their Korean food after a "pretty good" first experience with their bulgogi last year, but the menu changed and the wannabe Korean flavors were not authentic or up to standards. The classic Korean sundubu chigae was way too fatty, spicy and watery, not a stew. The bibimbop was mostly rice and less fresh veggies than the first time I ate here. For the first time in my life, we saw a restaurant serve up a severely burnt egg (on top of the bibimbop) instead of a simple fried egg. What's happening in the kitchen and their standards to mess up a simple fried egg? (You'll find better bibimbop and soondubu chigae in fast casual cafes and H mart cafeterias.) The non-Korean dishes were better - the fusion gochujang pasta alfredo with shrimp was tasty, and the butternut squash-quinoa-kale dish was surprisingly delicious. However, the true Korean dishes were not authentic and therefore disappointing. They're trying to capitalize on the popular Korean wave but I doubt the truly knows Korean cuisine or flavors. Also dining is on second floor. If you have anyone in your party who can't handle two sets of steps, know that there is no elevator here, and the restrooms are downstairs only where the floor tiles are peeling off and causing tripping hazards. read more

The place is super cute and intimate upstairs. It was quite slow for Friday night but the service was good. The food came out fast. The shrimp dumplings were awesome. Favorite dish of the night. I for the spicy chicken sandwich and my partner got the Korean fried chicken. I did not enjoy the sandwich. Nothing spicy about it and it wasn't very flavorful. This is a really cute restaurant, and the dining experience is very pleasant. I'm not sure how authentic the menu is, but the food is delicious regardless. I had the veggie sundubu, which was very flavorful and the perfect soup for a chilly winter evening. My only complaint is that it tasted like the soup had egg, which I try to avoid, and I didn't see egg listed in the menu description. The food is on the expensive side, but that is not unusual for Princeton. Next time, I would like to try the bubble tea, as I heard it is very delicious and affordable. read more

I stopped by around 1:10pm during lunch and was surprised to find a parking lot behind the building, which it a lot easier than looking for parking on the street or parking garage, it's not typical to find this luxury in Princeton. Ficus was busier than I expected, with a good amount of people coming in and grabbing their drinks to go. A lot of customers placed their orders ahead of time for pickup, which is probably what I'll do next time I stop by. The person at the register was kind and helpful. After asking what they normally recommend, I told them I that was not a fan of tapioca or drinks with milk in it, and they recommended the Mango Hibiscus Tea. I went with that, and asked for less mango jelly to cut down on the sweetness. It was refreshing and light. I liked that the mango jelly had a texture close to actual mango. It had me wishing that I ordered the regular amount of mango jelly. I ordered the Ficus Beef Burger with a side of waffle fries. The burger was delicious, the patty was nicely seasoned, the brioche bun was soft and toasted, it had the perfect amount of secret sauce, and the cheddar cheese was nicely aged. The waffle fries were lightly seasoned and crispy. I would definitely order the burger again, I am so happy that I mistakenly said burger when I repeated my order out loud to the person taking my order. The food was packaged nicely, with two rubber bands to secure the lid to the food. The only downside with that I waited a total of 31 minutes for my order. I waited 16 minutes for my drink order, and another 15 minutes for my food order. It's not convenient when you want to just run in and at least quickly grab a drink. I would definitely visit again, and order the mango hibiscus drink and ficus beef burger again, along with trying other menu items. read more

American with Korean flare @ Princeton, NJ We made reservation for Sunday brunch to try out their price fix lunch but it was only available for weekdays this week for the Princeton restaurant week. The restaurant was on the second floor and was spacious but needed some updates. We sat near by the window and it was kind of chilly. There were out door sittings for the summer month and parking lot in the back of the restaurant. We ordered bulgogi taco with lettuce, pickled cabbage and feta cheese. They have my favorite brown sugar milk tea! Also ventured into their food today- the korean burger was very filling and the cucumber kimchi was a nice touch. I liked the filling in the shrimp dumplings though even with the sauces felt it was a bit bland. The potato croquettes were perfect, and I loved both the sauces it came with. I got takeout, and my fries were a bit soggy- i think the containers don't have much ventilation plus my food was ready quickly which was my fault. The tables are not cleaned, and when we asked someone to wipe one down, we were told to just move to another table which was just as dirty. There were crumbs all over the booths, and the floors looked disgusting. It also took forever for a waitress to come by. Honestly, the floors and bathrooms at a 7-Eleven are cleaner than this place. Oddly enough, the main reason behind my low rating for Ficus is the very poor packaging. I ordered a chicken katsu for takeout. The wait time was a bit long, but it was made fresh (I assume, from the sounds in the kitchen). However, immediately upon receiving my takeout order, I noticed that the bag had a very large rip in a location concerningly near the bottom where the food was pressing up against/right next to. The rip also extended around a full corner. Whoever packaged it had taped up the bag, but was there a reason they did that instead of just putting the food into a new bag with actual structural integrity? (I don't think it's for sustainability purposes, since you could always recycle a paper bag. Plus the tape looked and felt plastic.) Furthermore, I disovered on my way back that my food began leaking and found that despite (or maybe because of) the rubber bands, the lid was not properly secured on top of the bowl, which had become misshapen. The food itself ranged from meh to fine. Some pieces of the chicken katsu were super hard and dry, but the non-dry pieces tasted good. The portion size of the bowl was large, matching the higher prices at this place. The tomato soup was good, but nothing special. The same applied to the butternut squash soup. Would recommend not getting takeout here and instead dining in, judging by the (lack of) quality of the packaging. read more

We walked in on a Saturday at 12 pm... not many people at all, surprisingly. We opted to sit upstairs which was nice and cozy.. there is a rooftop that I'm sure gets lot of use during the warmer months. Johnny was out server and he was very friendly and professional. We ordered scrambled eggs, avocado toast, a hot matcha latte, and a mocktail called the Aloha. Everything was delicious and fresh! LOVED the avocado toast -- topped with confit tomato, balsamic glaze, and a poached egg.... it was just so good. I think it was the sourdough bread--I love sourdough. This place was friggin delicious. I came in expecting your standard cafe style food but the menu was very unique and flavorful. They also offer Boba tea, coffee, smoothies and alcohol too - they've really got it all. Great atmosphere, more cafe-like downstairs, and more upscale upstairs. There's also a rooftop patio for nice days! Our waiter (who appeared to be the only one there), was quite attentive, despite having tables upstairs on the patio and downstairs. He was great! Ficus is located in its own little nook away from the main hustle and bustle on Nassau Street in Princeton. The interiors are quite cozy with artwork on display. I had been looking to try out their spicy chicken sandwich for quite some time after seeing some decent reviews for it, and a Yelp experience was just the impetus that got me to try it out. One of the ladies who rang me up (perhaps a co-owner?) even commented "you've heard about our spicy chicken sandwich?" which made me think I was in for a decent food experience. The spicy chicken sandwich took a good 10 minutes or so to prepare, as I saw a kitchen full of people hard at work preparing food for customers. I did visit in their final hour before closing on the weekend; they didn't bother asking if I wanted to dine in, and just assumed I wanted the sandwich to go, so it was served to me in a paper bag rather than on a plate. Still, it looked great when I took it out of the bag, with breaded chicken served on what looked to be a high quality focaccia bread along with red cabbage, kale, and chipotle aioli. Sadly, as I bit into it, I realized the 2 pieces of breaded chicken on the sandwich were over 90% breading. As I proceeded to eat, some bites didn't have any chicken at all, and it felt like you were just eating breading. It was really unappetizing, and I wound up throwing most of the sandwich out (and I rarely throw out food like that). While I didn't find the chipotle aioli all that spicy, all the other ingredients seemed good and had all the makings of a great sandwich if it weren't for the severe lack of chicken. I'm not sure if I caught them on an off day or if they're cutting corners on serving breaded chicken with mostly breading, but my first dining experience with Ficus was overall pretty disappointing. read more

Cute little spot to get lunch! They feature a lot of artwork from artists. It has a very quaint café vibe. I ended up getting the Farro salad with salmon for lunch and it was absolutely delicious. First off the girl at the counter was not helpful or inviting, customer service is not her calling. Turns out the upstairs was closed so the only space was the cafe. The paper menus apparently did not even have the full list of food so we have to look at the menu board and not choose from the uncomfortable squishy corner booth. We ordered two burgers and one beef and broccoli. This should be my fault, ordering a Chinese dish at a non Asian or fusion restaurant. What was I thinking? Oh my stomach did the thinking that's what. But before I get into the food, let me forever remind myself to never come here again. They put our three entrees I n but the beef and broccoli did not go through due to a system error. They couldn't charge me for my entree and said they said I'll be getting it anyways. My husband swiped swiped for $30ish and signed for it, pressed done. Then they said the system reset and now it said to pay $45ish for all 3 entrees. We said we already got charged for the 2 entrees but they said they don't know if we were charged and wanted to charge us again for all 3, and in case the first charge goes through they will refund it to us. What. We are not paying for 5 entrees just because you don't know if it went through and reset the system so the beef and broccoli can be charged. They were on the phone with the manager getting instructions. The entire process was so frustrating and annoying as we were all really hungry and the staff was inexperienced to resolving issues. If they were coached to charge us again, that manager is also a fail. The entire experience was a fail. I had a baby with me and I'm already stressed and don't want to deal with any of this mess. Anyways, I pull up my Amex that shows the charge is already pending since everyone is a mess. All the food comes out and I'm looking at my beef and broccoli entree thinking why didn't I just cancel my order and be done with it. The guy comes over to tell us he needs to charge us now for my entree. He gives my husband a tiny discount for all the trouble caused. Here comes the fun part. I take a bite of my beef and I'm like noooooooo it's rubber. They overcooked the beef. I take a bite of my rice and my blood pressure is telling me it's reaching for the stars. The only edible item in the bowl was the broccoli. This dish is not worth $15.99. It isn't even worth 9.99. Since I'm hungry I just eat it until I'm l half way in when I realized they didn't just give me a beef and broccoli rice, they gave me beef and broccoli rice + soup because the whole entire bowl is just sauce. What a fail, such a flaming disaster of an experience. Oh the two burgers we got were mediocre. But danggggg we regretted our trip to NJ. Over priced and a joke, staff is undertrained and seriously, who made my food? High sodium entree warning, see picture for soup image. Now my breast milk is high sodium milk, thanks a lot ficus. They had the audacity to try and charge us twice and then the nerve to serve me a soy sauce soup. I really deserve a refund for this horror of a dish, not a $2 discount. Anyways I usually don't write this long of a review but this was the worst beef and broccoli I've ever had, as well as the worst experience from entrance to exit. I concur! Totally unexpected to encounter one of the best spicy chicken sandwiches ever! After skipping lunch during the day and needing to run a few more errands before a late dinner, I just wanted some caffeine to get me through the rest of the evening. The woman behind the counter were awesome and fantastically entertained my thoughts on what I needed. After going through a couple of options & making a decision, then presented with yet another option & making a decision, and yet again presented with another,..... you get the point I think. We finally settled on something new on the menu and it definitely rocked. The piping hot aroma from the Coconut Ginger Hot Tea totally boosted my evening. The coconut scent was intoxicating and after taking a sip, the backend hint of ginger was perfect. I knew for sure that I'd be back again just for this. After finally settling on a drink, I decided to ask what she thought I should eat and this Spicy Chicken was the first thing I heard and that was enough. Even though the help tried to present other options, I held firm and I'm so glad I did. This picturesque sandwich was just as outstanding on first bite. Pounded thin and breaded, a hint of spicy, dressed with a crispy slaw and dressing, wrapped in a perfect warmed crusty bun. Errands would have to wait with this sandwich in my hand. Another great restaurant has been added to the downtown Princeton area and this restaurant is a serious contender to stay. Ficus Above is literally above Ficus Cafe, which is now renamed Ficus Ground, as per the owner, Quinta. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays but are opened on Wednesday - Thursday & Sunday from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. Friday and Saturday are opened an extra hour later with the closing being at 9:00 pm. The owner, Quinta and Chef Raymon both are keen on having this restaurant to be a fine dining experience with European/Asian fusion cuisine. Their menu is ever changing simply because they cater their dishes depending on the season and what is the absolute freshest ingredients. Did I mention they are the only restaurant in the Princeton area with rooftop dining? Hubby and I dined on their rooftop and had a beautiful view of Nassau Street. We started off with cocktails: Peach Lady and Orange Coffee. I honestly did not think espresso with freshly squeezed orange juice was compatible but hubby thoroughly enjoyed it and I just had to take a sip. It was sensational! Our appetizers were both excellent. Both the octopus and salmon were so fresh and succulent but the salmon mi-cuit stood out the most, for me. For our entrees, I'm personally partial to seafood so I have to give it to the sea bass prepared in lemongrass sauce. It was outstanding and a must get if you adore seafood. Two generous filets were given but I was a bit disappointed with just the snow pea pods that accompanied it. Chef Raymon later came out to say "hello" and explained they had a problem getting their fresh vegetables that were originally supposed to be paired with the fish was delayed. Both hubby and I had wonderful service and the food is definitely fine dining without going broke. The prices were extremely fair for the extraordinary dining experience. I wish Ficus Above much success and I look forward to celebrating all my special occasions and meeting up with friends either in their private rooms or just coming for a great casual dinner with hubby. Amazing bubble tea! I went twice in two days. It's that good. I got the iced thai milk tea and iced matcha latte with boba (both small). My friends got the brown sugar boba milk tea twice (both large). Their drink had a salted foam on top that they really liked, and their drink was very sweet. I found that my iced Thai milk tea was too sweet for me so I got my iced matcha latte (the next day) at 50% sweetness. It was still really sweet though, so I'd recommend possibly going down to 25% if you don't have much of a sweet tooth. Service was really fast, and the bubbles tasted fresh. Both their regular boba and brown sugar boba were great. The ambiance is also nice (high ceilings, decor) and there is parking for customers in the parking lot behind the building if you're driving. read more

You really need to stop into Ficus on your next visit into Princeton. It is on Nassau but a bit farther off of the true main section, so I would guess a lot of folks might not naturally pass it. It is worth the extra 5 minute walk, trust me. I've gotten a few different drinks (all iced so far) and some food and everything has been so wonderful. My favorite drinks so far have been the brown sugar boba & the pina colada slush drink. It really just depends how sweet you'd like and what mood you're in. I don't think you can go wrong though. For food, get the eggplant sandwich. Just do it... It is INCREDIBLE. I wish I lived closer because I would order it at least once a week. It is full of flavor, so delicious, and seems very healthy for you. The staff seem very kind and helpful and I love the vibe of the place. It is covered in students art work that is for sale and has a few tables inside. The last time I went was summer and they had so many tables outside. It seemed like the perfect spot for relaxing with a cold drink. On top of all of the artwork that makes the space so great, they have walls covered in fake flowers (inside and outside) that really make the space look so unique and welcoming. They have an upstairs that I think was under construction but will eventually be much more seating, perfect with the cold weather approaching. I was here with my wife so she can try out one of the drinks they offered during the yelp event check in. I decided to ordered something for myself after driving down here. We have not tried the food so I can't give any opinions on the food, however, I ordered the Pina Colada slush drink with coconut lychee jelly. I received the drink, but it was not impressive at all to me. First, the drink tasted like a bubble tea hardly any ice or not enough. It was very watery to say the least. Second, they charged me for the jelly toppings, but I did not get any at all. At this point, I was already in the car and didn't want to come back and complain. I decided to bring half of the drink home and refreeze it because I like the drink more of a slush. When I was in the process of just stirring the slush what do I find in the drink? I found a metal foil wrap, although it was very tiny that I could have digested it and would have never known. Sometimes by chance you end up finding things like this. I am very disgusted at the lack of food safety preparation and lack of order attention to detail. I don't know how they run the orders through the line, but they should have not forgotten toppings that was ordered. Overall, I would not come back to this place because there's tons of shops near me that offer slush drinks and boba tea. I only came here with my wife for the yelp deal. I had a mint hot cocoa and a cinnamon roll. The hot cocoa was good, but I needed to add some sweetener as it wasn't as sweet as I prefer. The cinnamon bun was very flavorful, but was not as fresh as I would have expected . The employee had offered to warm it up but it wasn't as warm as I expected. Also that may have contributed to drying out the pastry. The upstairs was under construction so I did not get to see it. There were several tables outside but only a couple indoors. Chicken sandwich was hearty, could have used some sandwich spread and felt a little dry, though the fried chicken was crispy and tasty. Beetroot arugula salad was fresh but under seasoned. Our fav -- Sweet potato fries were spot on! Crunchy and tasty! Place looked clean, staff was wearing masks, indoor & outdoor seating was open for dine-in. Went to a party that was held in the upstairs dining room. The room itself was nice but service was honestly bad. There were maybe 40 of us and a set menu for everyone to choose from. The servers brought out 1-2 plates of appetizers at a time. So it was quite some time before everyone had their tacos/salads. Almost an hour later we got the main course, but the servers brought 2 plates out every 10 or so minutes. By the time i got my meal, the other end of the table already finished their food. The servers also werent sure who ordered which meal and there ended up being extra food at the end. The ficus burger said it would have a fried egg inside. But when we got it, there was no egg. We asked the server about it and they said "we didnt have time to add it" so everyone that ordered the burger, didnt get an egg. That response honestly shocked me because this party was booked in advance, why werent they more prepared. When it was time for dessert, the servers stood at the end of each table, and had everyone pass down the bowls of creme brulee as well as cups of coffee. There was room for them to walk around each table so not sure why they served the food that way. If you're planning to host a party here, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. read more

Ficus is a new bubble tea shop and cafe that opened up last month in Despana's old location. They have an extensive menu of drinks as well as some cafe items and lifestyle bowls (globally-inspired fast casual type bowls). Their menu is on their website https://www.ficusbv.com/menus and they're also super active on Instagram @ficusbonvivant , where they regularly post about new dishes and drinks. They have online ordering on their website https://order.ficusbv.com/ficus/menu and are also on Grubhub, Seamless, and Doordash. Right now they're doing a promotion where you get a free croissant with a drink order before 11 a.m. They also have a rewards program, and the staff is very helpful with answering any questions. There's a plexiglass barrier at the cash register, and they also provide hand sanitizer. I tried the Good Morning Ficus combo ($5.99), which is the FBV latte (decaf coffee and black tea) and cinnamon bun (baked in-house). Both were good. Note that the milk in their tea lattes isn't steamed, and the FBV latte and silky tea lattes are usually made with half and half. The cinnamon bun is the twisted Scandinavian style (a la Circus Bakery in Paris), and I liked the addition of pearl sugar on top and that it was less sweet and more cinnamon-forward than the usual iced American-style cinnamon buns. They also have a lot of drink options, including brown sugar boba milk tea (!) so I recommend checking them out and supporting this newly opened business. Some of the items the staff recommended to me were the salmon salad, fried chicken quinoa, Thai Tea Latte, Oreo Milk Tea, and Galaxy Love; I haven't had the chance to try any of them yet though. read more

Cafe food at lower level and elegant dining on top. This is for their ground level cafe style. Menu selection is limited but eclectic and the servers are friendly but not always very attentive (expected for a cafe type service). From what one can see, upper level is clearly more classy and formal. read more
