I know there are a lot of good reviews of Rudy on yelp, but I'd have to disagree. He is nice, that's true, but he certainly feels he knows best when it comes to hair. This led to a discussion about what I wanted done with my hair and, in the end, I partially conceded to Rudy because I figured he's the expert. I should have trusted my gut. He asked me at least 4 times if I was "sure" I didn't want bangs. Yes, I'm sure, maybe you think they'd look good, but they are more work for me and I've had bad BAD bangs in the past. I stuck to my guns on that one. I told him I didn't want much length cut, so he gave me this crazy 80's rock/choppy layered/mullet sorta thing. I tried to give it a few days to fall in love with it, but I am not the kind of girl who can rock an old-lady haircut and make it look like it's hip and fresh. I look old. I grew to loathe it more as days passed. I didn't even want it fixed by Rudy. I went to CT and got it fixed by a woman who acknowledged the botched cut and did what I asked to fix it (even though it could not be fully salvaged due to the type of cut). I am new to Park Slope and was looking for a place for a routine hair cut. My friend recommended Fez. I got my hair cut today by Lissette. Lissette is super sweet and good at her job. She made me feel welcome and I never felt intimidated or shamed, as is common at other salons. She gave me a great cut and styled it in a really fun way with bouncy curls (my hair is wavy but becomes so flat and dull in the winter). I would recommend this salon. I moved to San Diego from Brooklyn 8 months ago. After 8 months of being here in San Diego, I finally decided to venture out and get my hair cut. I am now writing a review for Fez because I realize just how good I had it back in Brooklyn! Well, when it comes to my hair at least. I have long, thick curly hair, and finding an affordable hair salon that cuts curly hair well can be very tricky. I used to get my hair cut at a very good hair salon in Manhattan, but I just couldn't continue to spend $150 on a hair cut every few months. I wanted something cheaper, something local. I came across Fez Salon on Yelp, and read that the owner Rudy, is great with curly hair. I made an appointment with Rudy and got a FABULOUS haircut! Rudy is very sweet, very professional, and I got an excellent haircut every time I went in there. He knew exactly what to do with my hair. Some friends told me that was the best they'd ever seen my hair look. Not only is Rudy a fantastic stylist, but the salon is super cute, and his staff is very personable and attentive. Fez is located on 5th Avenue in Park Slope, so after my haircuts, I'd walk down to Beacon's Closet and shop or have lunch at one of the many cute restaurants in the neighborhood. I cannot say enough good things about Rudy and his salon, and I really miss this place! If I ever win the lottery, I will fly across the country every 3 months just to get my hair cut by this man. My best friend raved about this place, so I went and saw Rudy. Didn't love the cut, but thought I could work with him -- maybe get him to listen to me a bit better the next time -- so I went back. We talked at length about what I wanted (nothing terribly complicated, just a short cut with layer in back and a bit longer in front). It was worse. I went back AGAIN a week later for a fix. I've had two great haircuts here from Rudy, after reading that he knows what to do with wavy/curly hair. He listened to what I wanted without making me feel rushed, and had exactly the right amount of his own opinions and suggestions. Plus, for this introvert, I love that he feels no need to make small talk during the cut. I have a hard time finding stylists that i like. I'm not a fan of chatting during hair cuts (precision is necessary) and i can never do my own hair as well as when i was in the salon. I went to Rudy because my boyfriend loves him and he always had a great (unnoticeable haircut...i like that!). I went to rudy and after playing with my hair he asked if i ever wore it curly. My hair is a bit multiple personality, straight front, curly back, frizzy, wavy...never the same day to day (i never wore it curly). Rudy gave me a cut to emphasize curl when i wanted it and then gave me all the details on how to do my own hair for straight and curly. I have never felt so confident wearing it out curly as i have since i saw Rudy. He better not pack up and leave Brooklyn b/c i'll be at a total loss!! read more

She was friendly enough, but spent absolutely no time on it, and when her next client came in she just threw a whole bunch of mousse in my hair and left it to dry terribly. After reading good reviews I finally decided to give this place a shot. I had an appointment with Rudy. I went in during one of the snow storms, so the place was dead. And yet somehow he ran out of time to finish my cut. He cut off way more than I wanted (i wanted to clean it up, he chopped off more than three inches...and my hair was not even shoulder length to begin with), and didn't do half the things he said he would (like putting layers in the front). The worst mistake was that he diffused my hair and then kept cutting! I HAVE THICK WAVY HAIR...it needs to be cut wet and straight, not curly and dry! Then he had me rinse my hair bc he put too much product in it. When I came back to the chair he told me he couldn't blow my hair out bc he didn't have time. SO, when i washed my hair at home that night and blew it out myself it looked like someone had gone at the back of my head with a dull axe. And from the front i looked like a soccer mom circa 1990. Based on the fact that he took 2 hrs on my hair, and still didn't finished and rushed me out bc his next appt was there, combined with how inconsistent my cut was, i would not recommend, at least not Rudy. read more

Pros: This place is nice, trendy, and clean. Cons: I got my haircut by Laura. She let me talk and tell her what I wanted during our consultation but did NOT listen to me at all!!! All I wanted was a simple 1inch trim and instead I got "layers, angles, feathering, sexy body, flowing kim kardashian hair" or at least thats what she called it :( I got a MULLET. My long flowing locks is still there in the back of my head but in the front, 6 inches were chopped off!! Its like having 2 different hair cuts! I get that in a trendy place, you pay a trendy price to get a trendy haircut, but what if I'm still willing to pay extra for something simple if its what I want? Even after I was soooo upset that she cut half my hair hair (believe me, this hair cut is soooooo awkward), they still made me pay!!! DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT go to Laura!!! While I was visiting NY, my sister booked me an appointment at Fez, as she had been there previously and liked it (I don't know who cut her hair). I was scheduled for an appointment with a stylist whose name I can't remember, but Rudy took one look at my curly, frizzy head of hair and proclaimed that he would cut it--and I am glad that he did. I've been trying to grow my hair out, and procrastinated on cutting it because every time I have it cut, the stylist sends me straight back to Square 1 of length. Rudy managed to cut my hair in such a way as to give me shape while making the loss of length appear neglible. I will definitely return for my next haircut. read more

I've gone to see Rudy at Fez twice now, and both times I've been totally satisfied. My first visit was last spring, and after trying and failing to convince a hairdresser in Brooklyn Heights to give me bangs (twice), Rudy not only agreed that it could work for me, but he made it happen. I just went back after about 6 months, and asked for something subtle and low-key, and am very pleased with the results. My hair is a wavy, cowlicky mess. The best cuts of my life have been from this place. I usually go to Reina, who is sometimes so quick I think she must have missed something, but then I see the wonderful job she's done and walk out feeling great. My latest appointment with Reina was cancelled but I couldn't wait for a cut so I made an appointment with Roxie - and walked out with another five star cut! I never spend a lot of money on my haircut but decided it was time to get a real cut. Fez had great reviews and is reasonably priced ($60 for women's wash, cut, dry). Roxy was my stylist. I showed her some pictures of what I wanted and she was honest with me telling me that my hair was too fine for those cuts and that it wouldn't look good. I'm glad that she was honest with me rather than just going ahead with what I said I wanted. She told me because I have thin hair I would be better off with layers. She cut my hair and then asked if I wanted it styled wavy or straight. Since I can NEVER get my hair to hold waves or curls I had her style it wavy. She made it work and I walked out feeling great. Of course I couldn't replicate the wavy look at home but that is due to lack of ability styling my hair. Also, she didn't try to talk to me much and concentrated on my hair which I prefer. Definitely a great value and great haircut. I will be back. Oh, and I called and got an appointment the same day! (I have medium length fine hair.) read more

I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted and I needed a professional opinion I had my appointment with Laura ,she was great . Laura talked to me about my likes and dislikes and had a vision. Anthony is the colorist at Fez. He is AMAZINGLY talented. I came to him very unhappy with a brassy blond head. I had been to three other colorists and still was unhappy with my fake looking color. I left Anthony's chair with a beautiful, natural set of highlights and I have been seeing him ever since. I tell him what I'm thinking and he makes it happen. I get blond highlights and Anthony puts a base breaker on which really softens the look. Recently I added a dark reddish purple color to the bottom half of my hair. It is sick! Anthony is absolutely the best colorist I've ever had. He is sweet, funny, attentive, and knows what he is doing. I will NEVER go anywhere else for my blond highlights, base breaker, and Rocket fire Red bottom. I also see Rudy for my haircuts. I just tell him what I'm looking for and he delivers. I get insane fuck-me haircuts that leave me walking out of the salon feeling so sexy! He has also given me big, beautiful curls. They look so good, my boyfriend can't take his eyes off me all night! He always notices when I get my hair done and tells me how amazing I look. Definitely go to Fez, you won't be disappointed! =o) read more

I have curly hair and the first cut from Roxie was great. She took a lot of time and my hair dried curly and fine. However, the next time she was in a rush and used a razor to cut my hair. This has never been done and when I questioned it, she said it would give it an "edge". Well it might have an edge but it doesn't curl. Stay away. read more

I am very picky about my haircuts and was upset when my stylist of several years moved away. I am a woman who wears short, straight hair and am always trying to get a cut that looks funky without being too crazy, niether too girly nor too boyish for me. I tried getting a cut at a much more expensive place in the LES, but was not happy wth the results. I booked an appointment after hearing my brother RAVE about hairstylist Rudy. I was scheduled for a cut with Natasha. Earlier in the week as an effort to pinch pennies, I had opted for a 15 dollar haircut with someone who, to say the least, did NOT know what she was doing. I walked into Fez with uneven layers, and a huge chunk of hair that had not been touched at all. Right away I felt that I was in good hands. Natasha is warm and welcoming, and such an easy person to talk to! I have very low maintenance hair which curls/waves naturally. Natasha listened to what i wanted (evening out, more layers) and still took in mind that I was trying to grow my hair out. In past experiences when I say "I'm still growing it out" stylists nod and tell me not to worry, but I come out with hair about 7 inches shorter. Needless to say, that will not be my last time going to fez. I hope to make Natasha my regular stylist! read more

i started going to see Rudy at Fez just after the salon opened--2-3 years ago. was always reasonably happy--i wouldn't say the cuts blew me away and i wasn't totally satisfied with the way he cut my bangs, but they were good, and the price was right. however i stopped in to see Rudy for a bang trim just before leaving for vacation and it was a DISASTER. in trimming my bangs he mistakenly cut off a lock of hair near my ear so there is a short, stubby chunk of hair that looks like a sideburn! (and he cut a little off on the other side too, but not so noiceable) it's atrocious. and he didn't even notice he had done it, and because i wear glasses and had taken them off, i didn't notice until i pulled my hair up later that day. now i can't wear my long hair up in a ponytail because it exposes the errant chunk of hair, and it's going to take a year or more to grow out because my hair is really long. it's 2 months later, and the chunk still won't tuck behind my ear. it just hangs there. It's a careless, stupid mistake for a stylist to make and IMO, unforgiveable. if you're the owner of a salon, you just shouldn't be making mistakes like that, and I think it's indicative of a lack of attention to detail. Rudy's a decent stylist most of the time, but i won't be taking my chances with him again. read more

For the last year or so I had been searching for a new place to get my hair cut in Park Slope. I tried Elements and Chandelier and was disappointed by both. I decided to try Fez several months ago and I have been going ever since. I'm a 30-something guy that has to look professional for work but doesn't want to seem too lame either. Fortunately, Roxy has been able to give me awesome haircuts that fit that description ever since I started going to her. She even does my color, and after a few adjustments, she has been nailing it perfectly. I'm very satisfied. Plus Roxy is cool and looks a little like Shakira. Rudy also seems very cool and although he's never cut my hair, I've watched him work with a variety of men and women; he seems to be a very good listener and everyone always seems happy with his cuts too. They could use some male-friendly magazines in the waiting area though. read more
