Dog Abuse / Neglect at North Star Kennels:…read more Micah has had our Belgian Malinois for a few overnight stays over the past few years. He knows our dog and usually speaks very highly of her. Our dog is a trained protection dog with very high drive. Upon dropping her off this past trip, my husband explained to Micah that "yes, she barks in the truck everywhere, she's just very excited" Micah decided to take issue with her barking in the kennel truck he uses to transport dogs. He put an electric shock collar (e-collar) on our dog without our consent or knowledge. She is NOT trained to use an e-collar and therefore had very adverse reactions to it. Without being trained to the shock, she did not know what to do with it. Upon arriving at the facility, our dog was covered in her own diarrhea. Micah did not inform us that he thought our dog was sick or reach out to ask if she had been sick before. When we picked her up 3 nights later she was also covered in her own diarrhea again. We found he had used the e-collar on her for transport back to us. He explained she had an "upset stomach" all weekend. We bathed her and she was perfectly fine for us the rest of the day and following days. We noticed she had an open sore on her neck. It was red and inflamed and had discharge coming out of it. We texted Micah a picture and asked if he had any idea how this happened. After further examination by us and our vet we found she had two matching marks on either side of her neck. The vet told us it was from e-collar misuse. The collar was on for too long, and too tight. This causes what is essentially a burn where the prongs meet the skin. The upset stomach is due to extreme anxiety and stress caused by the entire ordeal. We sent this report to Micah who said his vet disagreed. (Without seeing our dog, examining her, or providing information on who the vet is). Micah told us it was from our own misuse of a prong collar she had not worn since she had been home. She has had a prong collar for training and working since she was a puppy, never having any issues with it. Micah presents himself as knowledgeable in the dog training sector. He is absolutely not. No knowledgeable trainer would put an e-collar on a dog for over an hour without the dog being trained to it. Especially not without our permission. To insinuate that the injury was caused by us is incredibly insulting, he stated he could "teach us how to properly use a prong collar". Further conversations with Micah on the phone were aggressive and unprofessional. The vet exam and antibiotics were refunded by Micah, the 3 day dog stay was not. DO NOT TRUST North Star Kennels with your animals.

When I picked up my puppy I was told there were no issues, that she did really well and only had a couple puppy wiggles that were normal. 3 days later we had to take our dog to the Vet because her eyes looked like they were bleeding. He was very concerned about excessive pressure and her having possibly been choked. Kendra was not present when I went to the shop to pick up my refund. The owner made threats of an Attorney because I posted my review and photos to warn this community of our experience. Before we entrusted The Dog House with our dogs, we first came and checked the place out. They have 4 main indoor dog areas. One for large breed dogs, one for medium, one for puppies, and one for senior dogs (they may also have an area for small breeds? I know they take dogs of all sizes). They have separate stall kennels for night time as well as crates if your dog is a jumper (ie: would jump over the stall wall). They also have a grassy outdoor area for the dogs to run around outside (with real grass, not fake turf that can be found other places). The indoor areas are mostly cement floor and cinder block walls with a wooden gate for going in and out. The senior dog area is the exception. Catering to older dogs who would rather be comfortable and sleep, more than play, they have dog beds and soft, comfy couches for them to lounge on. They arranged for us to bring the dogs for a half a day, so they could test them in the sleeping areas (decide if the stall or crate would be better), and see which area would be best for them during daytime social hours. They don't charge for this and I love that they place dogs individually, based on personality and temperament, not merely size. For example, Scout (our Irish Setter), is large. She is by all accounts a large breed dog. However, her temperament is super mild and she does't really have an alpha bone in her body (I've seen her go belly up submissive for small poodles). They opted to put her in with the medium dogs, which was awesome as it kept her with Boomer, who is her very best friend, and allowed her to play with dogs who are a little more her style when it comes to romping. The dogs play as much as they're up for all day indoors and every hour or so outside. Their prices are reasonable (given the level of care) and the dogs are always supervised during play. At night, they only have to go 6 or so hours before someone is there to let them out in the morning (mine go longer at home!). We decided to have them stay. They cared for them for 4 nights and we couldn't be happier. Our dogs came home happy, healthy, and exhausted from all the play. I will definitely use them any other time we are needing overnight care. I also will likely partake in their daytime daycare on occasions when I know, due to our schedules, that our dogs won't get much exercise/play time. Get to it!

Madi was grooming my dog and I attempted to show her some of the problem areas which I physically pointed out instead she seemed disinterested and just said Okay he'll be ready in 2-3 hrs. The service ended up taking just under 4 hrs since she said it took her longer with some of the matting. In total she ended up charging me $20 over what I was quoted which even the quote was higher than what I had paid here when I still lived in Boise and his coat was in worse shape right after adopting him. It wasn't until 40 min later when I got home that I noticed his collar wasn't on when I called they told me to come back today because they were leaving in 15 min in the most insincere customer service voice with no concern for the mistake she made. When I did come in to get the collar today another women greeted me politely but when I asked for a partial refund to cover the hour of my time I wasted and the gas I used to get there and back her body language shifted and she blunted stated we don't do that here. When I did get back to my house with collar in hand I examined his coat more in depth after putting the collar back on and the matting I clearly pointed out was still there. I have gone to snoopy's probably 5 times and this was a horrible experience I'm never going back.
