i always passed this small little house on my way to Feast, and it wasnt until i saw an instagram…read morepost about them that i found out what it was, and im so happy i did! its a cute little old school manoa house, with a bunch of therapy rooms, and several different practitioners. i went to see allyson cook. they specialize in sarga style massage, which i had never even heard of until i found them. it was a very relaxing and therapeutic experience! deep, long, slower strokes, really get through the muscle tissue. plus theres aromatherapy and of course music playing. i also had her do cupping. the best part about it was that it wasnt just a massage for relaxation, but she concentrated on a therapy aspect. when we first started out she asked if i had any issues or concerns, and from there she tailored the experience to focus on my shoulder which has weaker ligaments since i dislocate it a lot. and then also on peripheral muscles that tend to spaz and over compensate as a result. i am super super picky about my therapists, and its hard for me to find any that i like. i can count on one hand how many therapists i'd ever go back to. and i get massages multiple times a month, and even when i go on trips. needless to say, allyson was amazing, and im definitely going back!

Sani welcomed me as soon as I walked in. He asked me what I wanted to focus on and we went to work. I get like 2+ massages a month, so I sort of know what I like. Sani was great. I told him I wanted my upper back, tops of shoulders, deltoid area, and left hip/glute. While he used great pressure on my upper back, I prefer much more pointed, focused, deep tissue massages where they dig into a knot to the point where you can feel the crunchy trigger point as it releases. Sani had a smoother, sweeping technique. He would press on trigger points to get them to loosen up a bit but wouldn't keep at it. I don't know anything about massage techniques but I wonder if this is because his speciality might be sports massage? Anyway, it was more than adequate and I left feeling relaxed but my shoulders were still a bit locked up when I left (to be fair to him, my shoulders are always ridiculously tight so they require a lot of attention). Why he gets 4 stars is because of his work on my deltoid area which I had previously injured and is still healing. He focused a lot of pressure and used his fingers to help break up whatever scar tissue or fascia or whatever. I definitely had greater range of movement in my shoulder after I left. Same for my glute medius/lower left back area. It's perennially tight and painful but Sani used a bit of compression, manipulation of my legs, and stretching to help loosen up my back. This is where he excelled as a therapist. My TL;DR is if you're an athlete and/or need to get specific parts of your body worked on due to injury, Sani is your man. He can help get that range of motion you lack back to your affected area. He reminds me of the sports massage therapists that works closely with a PT or chiropractor. I would trust him to get me back to competing in whatever sport I was in 100%. In terms of the run of the mill deep tissue/therapeutic massage. I thought he was still very good but not completely aligned with my preferences of smashing a trigger point into submission no matter how much pain it requires. Perhaps that's why this place is called Active Sports Massage. haha. Anyway, well worth the trip and the money. I'll be back when I'm on that side of the island.

Well, today we are adding Chelsea North to the list of awesome providers in the islands. Chelsea works in the Hawaii Wellness Spa which is a little oasis in the midst of town. This was my first time here, and I was very impressed with the facilities. When I walked in the waiting area was warm and inviting; after a quick introduction I completed some paperwork while sipping some water. As I entered my massage room, right away I noticed the room had a shower and tub both were very clean. Then the main event! Chelsea probably has magic fingers that radiate healing rainbows from each fingertip. No kidding. My shoulders and neck were so tight and she gently yet firmly worked those muscles back into shape. She doubled checked on me, to make sure the pressure was to my liking but other than that, kept the chatting down to a minimum (likely because I was snoring 10 minutes into it). I also like that Chelsea used a variety of techniques to ensure the tension was relieved - meaning she customized for the situation (aka my rock hard neck and shoulder muscles) rather than stick to a cookie cutter variety. Towards the end of my massage I was surprised when Chelsea informed me that I was welcomed to take a quick shower if I wanted to wash off some of the lotion/oils. WOW, cool! Then I was offered some nice tea while cashing out and was on my way. Definitely will be back!! I think I'm in love......

But it's a no frills, traditional shiatsu massage by talented specialists so just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. It's in an open space, fully clothed (so where loose comfortable clothing; not jeans etc) with no oil. It's targeted pressure points and not oiled like Swedish or Thai massages. They focus on the areas you escalate to them versus a full body massage. I saw both Kieko and Aya. I'd recommend both. Keiko for more precise pressure points and Aya for stronger broader technique. Both are attentive and focus on problematic areas you raise to them and will adapt their session with an intention to address that targeted area. Both genuinely seemed to care about my improvement and provide advise for after their session. Hope this place continues to do well.

Clients remain fully clothed, and the shared treatment room is divided into separate areas by soft futons on a padded floor, each with a face rest similar to those on massage tables. Aisen has both male and female therapists, and in my experience, all are qualified professionals. That said, you may still like one therapist more than another, depending on your own preferences. Many sessions are conducted in silence, with only occasional quiet exchanges. Some clients, though, seem comfortable with therapists who engage more actively in conversation. Although I've been coming here for years, this morning was only my second treatment with one of the therapists there -- both times for specific issues. I like this person's thoroughness and pressure. And like the others I've seen here, the focus is on the whole body, not just the parts that ache. I made a follow-up appointment with this therapist.
