Okay the Bonzai prawns had me at hello, but it's their lobster tacos and fresh, frothy strawberry, mint smoothies that will bring me back time and again. Located in a purple catering truck parked on the waterfront at Davis Bay (from March - October) along the Sunshine Coast Highway, this rolling gourmet bistro is a welcome surprise in the food stand category - otherwise restricted to hot dogs and chips (but then that's another story). Steve and Paul, the friendly chef/owners have edited their seaside food menu to perfection. They focus on what they do best - seafood, Westcoast BBQ and refreshing cool blender drinks, apres beach stroll or swim. The day we pulled up I was immediately drawn to the Bonzai local prawns, sauteed in white wine, garlic, tomatoes and lemon served on basmati rice with a fresh pineapple brochette for a mere $12.00. However, maybe it was Toots and The Maytals playing on the stereo in the truck with the Steve the chef swaying to the beat, or fond memories of Rosarita Beach in the Baja, but when I laid eyes on the Lobster Taco posted on their Specials of the Day, I was weak in the knees. When my order arrived less than 5 minutes later, I was a goner. Soft, warm corn tortillas filled to the brim with juicy chunks of fresh, tender lobster layered with organic local mixed greens and topped with generous dollops of a chunky, tangy homemade guacamole. My friend, whose taste runs more to the carne ordered the Apple smoked pulled pork BBQ, served with Jack Daniels BBQ sauce, Howe Sound Brewery Great Northern baked beans, Pacific rim Coleslaw and zucchini/jalapeno corn bread. He was frothing at the mouth. To think I had to talk him into stopping, you know how they love to keep driving. So if you're motoring up the coast and see the purple truck, hit the brakes, pull over, grab your cash and have the best roadside meal on the west coast. Besides to fantastically catchy name, 'Feastro, the Rolling Bistro', I didn't find their food absolutely amazing. My husband and I decided to try Feastro today for lunch. We order two things and they were the Halibut Taco and the Fish and Chips. The halibut taco was too plain for me. It lacked flavor or depth. The fish itself however, was delicious and tasted very fresh. The fish and chips was better than the taco. The fish was lightly battered and the batter was fluffy. The fish was melt in my mouth good. The coleslaw was bland and nothing great . The fries were average. I'd give this place another shot though, it has potential. read more

On a random Monday, a bunch of us gathered by Waterfront for lunch at Feastro food truck to feed our hunger pangs. I was impressed by the full menu and range of options available. It was hard to choose. I ended up with a (large) taco and split an order of poutine. I thought $17 for both was on the expensive side. I went with the prawn and prosciutto taco. That's the special chorizo. The tacos were massive and difficult to eat and bite down on. The poutine was a mixed bag. It was big, but there was not enough cheese or gravy. I was disappointed. I probably should have stuck to the seafood options. The food was good and I was full, but I wasn't entirely sold. We were attracted to Coal Harbour on this sunny day for some good eats. The line up was pretty long so we thought it was a safe bet. The food that was coming out looked good too... in fact, the sheer size of the Shrimp & Crab Cake was mind-blowing. It was, quite literally, the size of a softball, topped with crispy tortilla strips and on what appeared to be a beautiful salad. My friend and I shared a yam fries, and I had the Crab & Avocado Taco (fresh sheet) and she had the Halibut Taco. We ordered a Snapper & Chips to go. Here are my thoughts: 1. For 8 dollars, I would expect the crab to avocado ratio higher. There simply wasn't a lot of crab to go around. I was then incredibly disappointed to find Pace Picante sauce (read, s&@#^ Costco salsa) instead of a nice fresh Pico de Gallo. 2. The yam fries were also mediocre. While well prepared, the only thing fresh about them was that they were pulled out of the freezer this morning. 3. My friend and I had gone to Tacofino last week for the fish taco. When she bit into her halibut taco she immediately said "oh..my..god... this is so bready and heavy" I looked over to see at least 3mm of thick batter on her light halibut. She found the taco to be very unwieldy to eat - I did with mine too. 4. We didn't eat the Snapper and Chips, but our friend reports that it was salty. I really think they have a good thing going and maybe it was just an off day. And maybe the tacos at Tacofino were just THAT good that any other place will have a hard time competing. I'm not sure. I'd probably go back, but not for anything that had salsa or was Mexican inspired. I'd still love to try the Crab Cake and the Tuna Carpaccio. read more

We had a specially catered event with Feastro and it was ok, just not as good as I had hoped. Fish taco - small, barely had enough inside. Even if it was more cabbage that would help. -flavour - 4 stars -portion -2 stars -would I want more? Yes, and no. Needs to be bigger! Pork taco was twice the size of my fish taco. I was satisfied with this. -flavour - 4 stars -portion -4.5 stars -would I want more? Hell yeah! Fries on the side? They were good, I'd say average for what I've had in the past with other foodie truckers. There is a lot of potential there, but as a group, we noticed that some tacos were bigger than others. there has to be more uniformity with the food. The flavours are spot on. They've got that part right. People are paying top dollars for food truck food and it has to look good too. Would I try it again? Yes. read more

Long before Vancouver's street food program got started, these guys had been wowing crowds up in Sunshine Coast. I'm sad to lose them on the coast as it was my favorite pit-stop by far (some days I end up there twice), but happy for them they now have a far bigger opportunity as a business. Other reviews say this place is pricey, it is but I think it's important to remember it isn't a hot dog cart. The food here is as good as and better than many sit-down restaurants, and they don't go cheap or light on ingredients. Just try their seafood chowder for example, there are so many huge chunks of mixed seafood in there my only possible complaint might be that there isn't enough room for the soup. Another reason it gets pricey, which isn't their fault, is that there are so many enticing items you end up ordering more than you can finish. One suggestion for eating the tacos: the filling overflows so eat half of it with a fork before attempting to approach it like a wrap. read more

This place is amazing. Seriously amazing. I'm so happy this little truck decided to make the trek from the Sunshine Coast and call Vancouver its home. Let me list the awesomeness for you: The food is delicious. They try to use locally-sourced ingredients, they have a fresh sheet of daily specials that line up with what's available, and the portions are perfect for their price. The price is right! The tacos are all $7, and I had the fresh sheet special of salmon and shrimp. So yum, and I would definitely buy it again in a heartbeat. They also have some fantastic looking dishes like scallop cerviche for $12 and bonzai prawns for $13. The service is great. Steve and Paul are such nice people and really hard-working. They're great to talk to while waiting for your food. I know there are a lot of food carts opening up in the city, but I really hope Feastro stays!! My first Vancouver food cart experience was definitely a good one. Feastro was conveniently located close to the office of the friend I was meeting for lunch, and we had no trouble spotting the purple truck parked near the Olympic cauldron. I ordered the bonzai prawns (served with red onions and tomatoes over a bed of rice & grains, topped with a skewer of grilled pineapples), while my friend ordered the beef taco. The beef taco was a lot smaller than I imagined it to be, especially for $7, however the quality of the food more than made up for the quantity. The taco was loaded with various greens, chutney & salsa, crispy leeks, and delicious beef. Very tasty, but watch out for drips! My bonzai prawns were absolutely delicious. Huge portions: a generous serving of rice & grains, large prawns, and loads of red onions and tomatoes, all sauteed with a light white wine/lemon sauce. So good! The truck is a great location (if you work nearby, that is): there's tons of seating in the area, and the view is great. I would love to come back to try the other menu items; I have my eye on the crab cake : ) read more

After two visits to Feastro, I'm a fan. On my first visit I had their Ahi Tuna taco. So delicious and (I think somewhat) healthy? Lots of greens and the ahi was very fresh. And what a huge serving! On my second visit, I had their crab & fish cakes. Or should I say, crab & fish BALL. And a huge massive softball it was! I could barely finish it myself, but it was so filling and flavourful. Suggestion - serve this dish in a bowl instead of on a plate. On the downside? For a food truck, it is pretty pricey. For an Ahi Tuna Taco, Crab Cake/Ball, and 2 Lemonades -- it came to $30. Whoa. My first visit to a Vancouver Food Cart, had to wait until I was with the Queen of Vancouver Food Cart Tours in case I went to the wrong place :-) Had their Pork Taco with Watermelon Lemonade combo, without the jalapeno peppers as I am a woos, and it was much more than I expected. Their was a lot of pulled pork and had to eat a lot of it before I could close the taco, which to me is perfect! Myfriend had their scrambeled eggs benny, wow was that a lot of food for the price, I am definitely coming back to try that one! Ate there today for the first time. Let me start by saying that this place is seriously popular, especially on a rare sunny day. get there before 11:30 or be prepared for a wait. I didn't count exactly, but the combination of regular menu and fresh sheet lunch items probably totaled about 20, with an emphasis on seafood. The two of ordered a mussel special, poutine and an Italian sausage taco. The food was up within about 5-10 minutes of ordering. The mussels looked like something right of a fine dining establishment and, with garlic bread on the side, were a good sized lunch portion. The taco was huge with two sausages worth of meat in there. The poutine was also sizable and we split one portion. Overall the portions are very generous, hot and well presented. The only warning I will give is that, although this is street food, don't expect to be walking around with this stuff. Even the taco was so large that I had to eat it with a knife and fork. So get there early, grab a bench at the Shaw centre or down by the water, and enjoy the best that Vancouver has to offer. Just expect a lot of jealous glances from the brown bag crowd and a lot of "where did you get that"! read more

I was addicted to the purple truck and its fresh, tasty offerings. I am sad that Featro, the rolling Bistro has left the Sunshine Coast and found a new home in Vancouver, but I hope they do well there. I ate at Feastro several times during their stay in Davis Bay. I loved waiting by the water for my delicious food, and sitting on the bench (even in the cold wind) to eat their fish tacos. On only one occasion was I less than pleased. Since I was a big fan of their fish tacos, I ordered them regularly. One particular time I had more greens and sauce than fish and the imbalance was remarkable. Nonetheless, the guys that operate out of the purple truck know how to make a great chowder and the crab cakes were 'melt-in-your-mouth" perfection. Congratulations, Vancouver. You win. read more

My friend and I came here because we needed a quick bite and saw that they were voted the "best tacos" in Vancouver, etc. so we thought it'd be worth trying out. We tried the ahi (special item that day) and fish tacos and were sadly disappointed in both of them. We agreed that we could've made them ourselves since the fish was flavorless and all we could taste was the normal (like out of the jar) salsa in each taco.. definitely not worth the $6 we paid for each one. I guess two stars instead of one though because the food was fresh and service was good. I'm not sure about this place though, if they advertise their tacos and they're below average.. I was looking for a place to eat when I stumbled upon Feastro -- they certainly seem to be in good locations. I got the Feastro's fish taco and it took quite a bit of time for me to actually get it -- and my lunch break isn't that long. I assumed that, for $8 a taco, I would get a fair amount of food for my money. Nope. It was hardly a meal, and did not have that much ingredients to it. Pulled pork sandwich with fries, pretty good. By Vancouver BBQ standards (which suck), it's one of the better things I've had. The slaw is a little weak but overall flavor is there. The cashier is friendly and professional. They turned my order around faster than a lot of food trucks do. And when I went, they were parked in a really nice spot with benches around (not sure if that's their usual spot). Hooray for food trucks! read more

At North Vancouver night market.....the fish was very very small...literally 2.5 inches long. Very poor cod taco.....and the service was not good. The watermelon and lemonade drink was mostly water. Both VERY overpriced! I would not go back. read more

I ordered a fish taco.This taco was delicious! For $5 I was expecting it to be bigger, but the taste made up for it. The fish was delicately seasoned, and sprinkled with tomatoes, onions, and cilantro. The exterior was flakey and crispy, and the interior was soft and moist. The taco shell itself was doughy and soft. Definitely not a meal on its own, but makes a great snack. read more

Saw these guys at the food cart fest this past Sunday, the truck definitely caught my eye especially when I saw they offered ceviche(my favourite summer food). I was even more excited when I bit into the tortilla chip to find it tasted house made. Now for ceviche, it was good in my opinion but not as good as it could have been. Hot day on our last stroll along the Vancouver waterfront near the Convention Center left us hungry and not interested in food we could get back home. I asked the dude in the cart for something light and refreshing and he came up with a really good scallop taco, coleslaw and watermelon lemonade. 18 bucks seemed a bit steep but was willing to splurge on local and unique food on our last afternoon in the city. The taco seemed overwhelming at first but greens, fish and sauce just melted together with the first bite and left the rest of the taco quickly devoured. Watermelon lemonade was blended up fresh with some herbs to make a soft full bodied drink that was not very sweet and nice for a hot day. Coleslaw was fresh and well seasoned but nothing too extraordinary. read more

I tried almost all of the food trucks at Yelp's Canada Day Block Party, and Feastro was by far my favourite. Having lived in San Francisco I have eaten a lot of tacos in my lifetime, and Feastro's pulled pork taco was on par with the best! I first heard of this food truck on the food network and proceeded to try it out since I found out the place was stationed two blocks from my work office. The food is exactly how they described it on TV. Fresh and delicious, which is often not the case when it comes to food trucks. The menu varies from Season to Season which was a bummer because there were other menu items I wanted to try which they didn't have available. Overall I'm satisfied with the food and quality. The Crab and Shrimp Cake is very popular and is a lot of food for Vancouver Standards. I cant wait to try more items as the Seasons change. read more

The food truck atmosphere never appealed to me. But then with the sudden onset of food trucks placed around Vancouver I thought I would try it out. This one was close to me office and was a short walk. The initial short walk has turned into the best discovery ever. I actually stopped eating fish and chips at restaurants as I generally got ill from all the grease used to cook the fish. I can honestly say that I have never felt ill from anything bought here. They use really interesting fish types (halibut, salmon, snapper), and have a wonderful homade slaw. Its about $13 which isn't "cheap" considering its fast fodo kind of, but it is worth it 100%. The poutine wasn't my favorite, the gravy is good, and fries are good, but all together it was not my fav. Its great too as they are open rain or shine. Also they accept debit which is great as I never carry cash with me. :) read more

"Dirty birdie" poutine was disappointing. Fries were raw, not an ounce of crispiness, and the teaspoon of gravy I got tasted like pure black pepper. All three parts (fries, curds and gravy) were tasteless. $14 with a can of coke makes me wish I could rate negative stars. read more

I wanted to like Feastro, I love a good fish taco. The fish was good but I got a small piece of fish on a huge bed of salad. Not exactly an ideal fish to stuffing ratio. I was disappointed with the value, but I would go back and try something else. read more

first time at the Feastro truck...was viewing real estate at the new 3 Harbour green and had 20 minutes to wait for realtor...was hungry and walked across the street to try out their food...YUM...I shared the chicken on a baguette with my wife and it was AWESOME...fries were just ok but the sandwich rocked...will be going back for sure read more

It's so hard to recommend just one dish from Feastro, each and every one I have tried makes it to the top of my list. I am so sorry they are no longer available on the Sunshine Coast but our loss is Vancouver's gain. I know where lunch is when I am in the city!
