Land of Saffron - Take out container: $14 for a slightly larger portion

Land of Saffron is fabulous! They are a Richmond-based food pop up and caterer that serves…read moreauthentic Spanish paella. They offer two styles: traditional with chicken, shrimp, and mussels, or vegan with white truffle oil. Both of course have the usual Spanish rice and vegetables. A heaping portion served in paper bowls costs about $12 and you can add the truffle oil to the non-vegan paella for $1. I first sampled their offerings at the Broad Appetit food festival, and was amazed watching them cook for the masses. I've never seen such a large paella pan in my life! Even with thousands of potential customers milling about, their attention to detail was striking. The seafood and chicken was beautifully and symmetrically laid out in the pan where it cooked, and the staff made sure each scoop had identical servings of protein. Most importantly, the flavor is phenomenal. They have the recipe down to a science, so even in enormous batches both the rice and meat is perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The combination of the tangy rice, succulent proteins, and acid from the peppers makes it very well balanced so no one component overwhelms the others. I also absolutely love the vegan version, which has such a great earthy, luxurious flavor with the white truffle oil. It's umptious, comforting food that leaves you stuffed and satisfied. They do not currently have their own website or Facebook page, but you can find them on Instagram, the AllEvents Richmond website, and on Facebook Events where they're pop ups are announced. They frequent Final Gravity Brewing and/or Ardent Craft Ales every other month or so. The pop up aspect does mean that you can't satisfy your craving whenever it calls, but it makes it feel a bit exclusive. It also feels a bit like a community, because you start to recognize other loyal fans and friends of the owners. I absolutely recommend it to paella lovers and novices alike!

They had a menu on the board that was quite limited and apparently, I've heard they have more items in the kiosk than listed on the menu board. We weren't informed of that by the girl taking orders though. I found that out in a food group I belong to so I guess better luck next time. Anyway, the fried rice was delicious and bursting with flavor. My only complaint was why be stingy with portions of rice? It didn't fill half the container and rice is so cheap and for $14, why I am getting only about a 3/4 cup of cooked rice? Never seen that before at Asian restaurants. Usually get more rice than I can eat, but it was definitely flavorful. Skewers were also well seasoned it quality of beef wasn't great. We spent a bit over $30 for two dishes but I'd say it wasn't really enough food for two people and I'm not a big eater. Portions are too small. 3.5 stars. Otherwise, I'd say definitely solid 4 stars plus. Not the best value imho

I was going to get a snack at sonic down the street but there were a TON of construction workers headed into Halal Munchies so I followed them. Thank goodness I did! Inside is super clean with a couple tables: I ate here twice in 24 hours if that tells you anything!

But the portions were huge, and liked the spicy rice Recommendations: will have to try the chicken next time since that seems to be more popular Affordability: unfortunately uber eats is double the price but without delivery, it was like $15 for a massive portion Ambiance: n/a delivery reviews Service: plus stars for friendly delivery service Good for: casual eats
