None of us had ever tried Fatman's, but it sounded better than any of the other options and after our experience we will definitely be coming back. When you go [and I suggest you give them a try!!} get ready for some delicious Chicago style pizza BBQ. My husband and I ordered a thin crust pepperoni pizza, a gyros, beef tips, and 4 meatballs on the side. Other members of our group ordered a deep dish (ham and garlic), thin meat lovers, and pizza pockets as an appetizer. Everything was wonderful. The owner came out and spoke with us to verify our orders and we always had a full drink. When your check is over a certain amount you get to spin a wheel and get free stuff - we scored some BBQ wings! I can't believe this hidden gem is all the way in AJ! But we will be back soon and are excited to try some new things. This locally owned business has a great environment, it's not too fancy or over the top. I loved the decor and the facade. I am always skeptical when it comes to deep dish pizza but Fatman's was awesome! I got a 10" deep dish and my lady had the Italian beef. Both were great. Mom and pop restaurants are always great food and you can tell that they take pride in their food. The waitress were very kind and recommended on what to get. Tasty and worth the wait. It's better than the conventional fast delivery pizzas, by far. A few things to keep in mind, prior to a Fatman's Pizza visit are: 1) Be sure it's not Monday - they're closed; 2) Dont arrive before 4PM - they're closed; and, 3 ) Don't try to use debit or credit cards - they only accept cash. There is an ATM on the premises, if you don't mind supporting the poor banking empire with a barrage of fees. If you're a pizza connoisseur, you'll likely just visit the one time. But, if you're just looking for something better than the (fast food) chain pizza joints, you might just become a regular. Let me know how it goes. read more

I can't tell you how reassuring and happy-dance-making talking to the owner of a pizza joint who knows what gluten is makes a celiac. I called before we went in to see how they prepare their gluten free pizza. They use the same oven, but it's got it's own special tray and they are very careful. It's rare to feel safe when ordering at a restaurant when gluten is so prevalent. My mom and her bf got onion rings to start with. Nice and crispy they said. I had a salad. They weren't sure if dressing was gluten free, so they brought me oil and vinegar which works for me. My mom and her bf got "the works". It did take 40 minutes to get to our table, but they warned us. They have limited oven space and the restaurant was full. They were moaning with happiness over their pizza. The gluten free pizza wasn't the best, but that's because gluten free crust kinda sucks anywhere you go. The toppings were still nice and fresh and the sauce flavorful. The service is what is giving this place the five stars! The couple that owns the place checked on us twice, making sure my mom was happy and letting me know my pizza was safe. The waitress was also sweet. She refilled my mom's boyfriend's root beer about six times. If you're a local I'm sure you've been here. If you're visiting, put it on your to do list =). read more

So this is an update to my previous 3 star review 2 years ago. New ownership as of January 1st. Only major difference is different decorations on the wall (no sports memorabilia) and the elimination of ribs and Chicago gyros on their menu. The food was about the same. To start things off, I was born and raised in Chicago. This did turn me into a little bit of a Chicago pizza snob lol. My first experience with Fatman's was ok. The cheese and meat on the pizza was good, but the sauce was a little bland and crust had absolutely no flavor. This time around we tried the fried mushrooms and a side of fries to tie us over for the 45 min-1hour it takes to cook a true Chicago deep dish pizza. The mushrooms were decent and the fries were good. The pizza was a different story. Again, the cheese and meat was good (we had pepperoni and sausage on the style we picked). The sauce again lacked much of any flavor. The crust was terrible! Absolutely zero flavor... it was like eating plain bread. This is not how a Chicago deep dish from the Windy City tastes. The crust (not talking stuffed) usually has a much more buttery and garlic taste to it. The sauce and pizza as a whole should pop with garlic, oregano, etc the minute it hits your taste buds. I urge you to take the time to drive to Giordanos, Gino's East, Or Lou's in Scottsdale or Phoenix. You will quickly realize the difference in flavor intensity! The are leaps and bounds better. You simply can't have a Chicago pizza that is as bland as Fatman's. Again, the cheese and meat was good. If they could just get some flavor in the crust and sauce.... they will really have something. Being a Chicago transplant, it's fair to say that I KNOW pizza. Particularly deep dish. Fatman's does deep dish right! I don't get out to the east valley very often but when I do, I order the SMOG (sausage, mushroom, green pepper and onion) with black olives added. The star of the group is the hearty chunks of real Italian sausage. Tastes like home! I have tried both thin crust and deep dish and I have to say the deep dish style is the best. Today I picked up a pie on my way home from work, which meant nearly an hour in Phoenix rush hour traffic. The problem with deep dish is the bottom crust can get really soggy from all of the ingredients, but not this pie! The bottom crust held up really well and didn't turn into mush! My only complaint, and the reason for 4 stars, is their pies need salt! I am not one to over season my meals, but in the three times I have ordered, I felt there is something lacking. Perhaps it just needs a little more sauce? I'm not sure. Once I added a sprinkling of salt the flavors really bloomed. I think I'll order extra sauce next time and see if that makes a difference. If not, no big deal. I'll just keep my salt shaker nearby! read more

Girl who answered the phone was rude, and rushed me through my order, then I had to ask a question so I called a few min after I had just hung up and she didn't know who I was or even have my order down in the system. Thankfully they didn't start on it so after that I just cancelled. The person who picks up the phone is your first point of contact with a company, she needs to be Retrained on her customer service skills and politeness. We stumbled on this place by accident, but it may be the happiest accident I have ever experienced. After we ordered we struck up conversation with the owner, and after telling us his story we couldn't wait to get our food. The pizza was extraordinary. We ordered one each of their specials, and I was absolutely amazed by the quality of the ingredients. It was the best pizza I think I have ever had. Wow! First time trying the pie there. I am blown away! The best pizza we have found in Apache Junction and nearby area. Loaded with the toppings! The bad? the decor really needs a revamp, chairs/tables in particular, it just looks like they live above it, thats how homey and cafeteria-esk it is. The original owner was from Chicago but he had an attitude so I only ate these a couple times. Then he sold it to some local folks, an Apache Junction politician who between him and the staff said they've never even visited Chicago. So, if you're not from Chicago the pizza isn't bad, but if you are from Chicago go to some other Chicago Style pizza joint. This place lacks the "zest" we're use to in Chicago pizzas. read more

Just met the owners of this great little pizzeria last night! While I'm not from Chicago -where everyone claims to know good pizza but to us, this was good pizza!! The place was clean, fast service and friendly staff. Keep in mind AJ is a 'seasonal town' and the bulk of business comes from our "snowbirds or winter visitors" and therefore business will be BUSY from about Halloween to Mothers Day (end of Oct-Mid May) so plan accordingly. Give yourself some time to order or to sit down and eat--whats the rush?! Also a note to out -of -towners (aka my mom) everyday is like vacation here, we do business different and we enjoy life. We ordered the stuffed pizza with pepperoni, sausage and pepperoni. Sauce tastes like canned tomato paste, inside bottom dough was soggy, basically no meat inside each slice had 1-1.5 pepperoni and maybe 2 sausage chunks. The antipasto salad was mostly lettuce, the creamy Italian dressing tasted mostly of mayonnaise. Very disappointed for $42 order. I won't waste my money there again. read more

This won't let me give them zero stars. Worst customer service ever. Manager blames customers for his incompetent employees. When you repeat an order to someone 5 times and it's still wrong. Not sure how you order a double dough pepperoni and a medium half cheese half sausage and end up with a large regular dough half pepperoni half sausage and a medium half pepperoni half sausage. And then give us an extra pizza that was made because they said they messed up the order and that pizza ended up being the same as the other 2 pizza half pepperoni half sausage. Oh mylanta, we're in love! The family decided on pizza tonight, but we wanted to try something new. And we're so glad we did. We ordered the large meat lovers, cheesy bread, mushrooms and cheese sticks and had it delivered. Our order came when they said it would, everything was hot and the cheese sticks and mushrooms were still crispy. But the pizza?! The size of the large was more of an extra and barely fit in the box and the flavor was beyond wonderful. The sauce was seasoned very well and there was no skimping on the toppings. My hubby commented several times about loving the flavor and that says something in my house. This was truly a great pizza and Fatmans is our new go to for pizza. The large THE WORKS pizza we ordered was very disappointing and didn't live up to our expectations based on the description the menu gave and what it costs. I am a huge supporter of local small businesses so, from the start I really wanted to love this place. It has a great mom and pop look to it. The food was good. We had pizza and a couple sodas. The pizza was good. The reason for my 2 stars, not one person in the entire restaurant greeted me or my husband when we walked through the door. The place was empty except for a manager sitting at a table balancing her books. So I walked up to the counter and I greeted the lady at the counter and told her in my friendliest most optimistic voice that we had seen on Google maps that they had a 5 star status so, we wanted to give it a try. She just smiled. Then I walked over to a table with my husband and we sat down to go over the menu together. My husband then went up to the counter and placed our order. Very minimal interaction. Him," We'll have a 14" mushroom and pepperoni with 2 colas please." Her," Okay that'll be blah blah blah dollars." I mean at least she smiled. There were 2 other employees coming and going back and forth from the kitchen area right behind the counter as well as the manager. No one ever smiled or acknowledged our presence the entire time we were there, even though they did look over at us a few times. It made me very uncomfortable, but I'm just a happy person positive person by nature so I tried to not let it bother me. Another couple walked in shortly after us, and the same thing. I don't think this place understands the meaning of quality customer service. It's not just about serving good food and not getting orders wrong. It's so much more than that. I won't ever go back. I ordered a pizza, first time in this area and it went through Postmates for delivery and they indicated it would take over an hour to delivery. Well at 1 hour and 15 minutes I contacted Fatman's Pizza and they said they couldn't do anything about it...I had to call Postmates...well they know perfectly well that finding a phone number for Postmates is virtually impossible and when I emailed them I received a robo answer and still NO pizza. Sorry I didn't get to try Fatman's Pizza, it was recommended highly too. I won't ever order again! read more
