I first stopped into Fat Dan's Deli a couple days ago, a long intended destination put off by my distaste for College Avenue parking. A friend of mine had raved about their burgers, and while I'm laying lower with the greasy food scene these days ever so often you get a hankerin' for a good ole' sloppy burger. Of course, since I typically order mine plain I guess sloppy doesn't really apply. When I stopped in a couple days ago, I parked a block or so up the street (and on the street) and wheeled up and across. Yeah, it's definitely a bit of a pain and likely won't be worth it for those with mobility issues. As I'm prone to long distance wheeling anyway, I'll go the extra bit for a decent meal. Unlike their neighbor in the same small strip center, Twenty Tap, that openly advertises "humans only" on their outdoor space, Fat Dan's is apparently pet friendly though no pets were around during this visit. Given the neighborhood, I'm sure this is a plus. The two-day renovation seems to have created an "open-air" option for Fat Dan's Deli with a garage-style door that now opens in good weather - As I'd never been there before, I am assuming this was the change as nothing else really seemed new. The space itself is small - inside the building you have a long bar on the right, a row of tables on the left, a small two-top in front of the bar and the now open-air/outdoor dining area with a handful of tables. It's a casual place, but they definitely seem to make the most out of it. There were only a handful of people when I arrived, but I struggled to find a decent space for the chair (though the outdoor area likely would have worked fine). A friendly patron offered to move from what would have easily been an accessible table, but I opted for the two-top in front of the bar. It faces out toward the patio and gave me both fresh air and a nice view. As Mary G. pointed out, Fat Dan's tends to be no frills in terms of decor, dining war and service. I found the service to be consistent and friendly - they had a sign on their chalkboard menu (mostly drink specials) that added "hugs - free." I'm not a hugger, so I didn't test them. The menu seems to mostly consist of a variety of pork/beef sandwiches - I opted for the most basic burger, the Fat Dan, and ordered it plain. It comes on a grilled bun. I didn't quite understand when I ordered it, but it also comes with chips. I ordered a small order of their famed tater tots. The burger was $8.95, the tots another $3.25 plus a couple bucks for my usual iced tea. The burger was delicious and rather huge - definitely a bigger hunk o' meat than one usually gets from burgers. It was obviously fresh. The "small" tots was actually sized rather nicely and, with the burger's chips, was actually a bit too much. I finished it off, but probably shouldn't have and doubt I would need to order that side again as a solo diner. The meal came in at just over $15, though I could have easily knocked the $3.25 side order of tots off of it and been happy. The iced tea refills were offered including one to go. I can't really say that Fat Dan's warrants that fifth star, but I enjoyed both good food and friendly service and, other than obnoxious parking and modest accessibility concerns can't say I had any issues with the place. I think the parking alone will likely keep it from becoming a regular spot on my rotation, but I'll definitely make the effort on occasion and, indeed, it's worth the extra effort. If you're in the area and want a brew or a burger, it's a great spot to enjoy the outdoor air and people watch. They do also offer a food truck option, though I haven't tried it yet. I could review the food all day for you but so many people before me have already done a far better job than I ever will...know this, whatever you order it's bound to be good and make sure you get the fries! This is a casual place, I like it because it has the big garage doors that they can open up in the summer and you can sit inside or outside but even inside you're still enjoying the weather. This isn't a fancy service type place. The staff is awesome, they will tell you their favorites and what is the most popular, but don't come here expecting fancy napkins and nice plating. You're going to get a roll of paper towel on your table and food served on big white pieces of paper and in baskets-and you know what, it's delicious like that! I love the food here! BUT (we did come here at 7pm on the eclipse day) our server passed us probably 8 times and did not approach. When he did, he pretended to give us a pitcher of beer (that we did not order) and we questioned him so he gave it to another table and was kind of rude about it. When he came back, he proceeded to cuss at us repeatedly about the pens that were left on the filthy table and how they did not work. He did not take our drink order for 45 minutes. As we were leaving (around the 1 hour mark) he started to approach us with waters but at that point I was over it, I know I am a college student, but still do not think this treatment was justified in any way. We then moved to the bar and were extremely rudely greeted. I love the food at fat dans but could not justify tipping a server that was rude to me. I'll try again next time. read more

This place is awesome! I'm here in Indy for work and so far this is the best food I have had. Fat Dans Pulled Pork was so juicy and tender. It was a great sandwich. The Chicago dog had a mountain of toppings and was delicious. The fries were hot and crispy with the perfect amount of salt. The new location on College Ave. is far superior to the old Broad Ripple Ave. location. It's right next door to Twenty Tap and I have a feeling that the overflow from Twenty Tap has increased their business by at least 25%. The food is just as good as it was on Broad Ripple Ave. The fries are some of the best in town. I'm pretty sure they're cooked in peanut oil, which makes all the difference in the world. The decor is all done up in Chicago sports, which is very comforting for a North Sider (Chicago, not Castleton). The food is pretty typical of what you would find in hundreds of Chicago diners. Italian beef, italian sausage, etc. The Italian beef is probably my favorite sandwich in the world, and Fat Dan's version does not disappoint. Served "hot and wet" is the only way to go (hot peppers and dipped in jus), if you want the authentic Chicago experience. Side note: You may not expect it, but Fat Dan's has some of the best wings in the city. Don't miss them. There are no plates here as the waiter/waitress will just lay out butcher paper on your table and you eat with your hands. I went to Fat Dan's for the first time and was pleased with some of their menu offerings. I got the Italian beef, dipped with provolone cheese and hot peppers on the side. The beef was good, but not great. I'm from Chicago so when we order a beef dipped, we expect wet bread. My sandwich was semi dipped. I joke around and call it a 'conservative' dip, which is not what I asked for. It was a decent sandwich but left me wanting more. The fries are massive. A large could easily feed 4. They were hot and crispy! My husband ordered the brisket sandwich, but it was very dry. It could be that it was so late in the night and that it wasn't fresh. I don't know! The smoked wings were excellent! I'd get those again for sure! Overall, we had a good time. The atmosphere was typical for a sports bar type setting, which could turn some people off, especially if you're a non drinker. I've been to Fat Dan's a couple times for a beer (great lineup of craft beer), but I'd never actually eaten here. A friend mentioned he was going to grab dinner there, so I tagged along. Keeping it Chicago style (their specialty), I got an Italian beef, wet (which is how it comes by default). You can also get it dry or dipped. I've read some amazing things about their fries, so I had to tack on a small order of those for the two of us to share. I was surprised with the food came out on paper wrapping. I guess that's efficient? And maybe a Chicago thing I didn't get. Whatever. The Italian beef was delicious - Tender and juicy. It was also surprisingly spicy! I like spicy food, so I was up for it. But beware if you don't. The fries stole the show. I'm not sure why the sandwiches come with chips that appear to be from a bag. The fries are clearly made in house and are freaking amazing. Serious contention for the best fries I've ever had. All said and done, and sandwich and an order of fries cost me about $12 at a full service restaurant. I can handle that. We love this super casual come-as-you-are sports bar in Broad Ripple. The staff is top notch and the beers, food, and atmosphere matches on par. We honestly didn't jump at the chance to check it out for ourselves for quite a while, even though tons and tons of our friends told us how wonderful this place is, because well, it's a deli and I'm vegetarian. However, even with a deli-style and bar food menu, a vegetarian can find something on the menu to enjoy. They have a delicious veggie burger, various fries and tots, a grilled cheese, as well as numerous sides that are vegetarian. Now if you're not a vegetarian and you celebrate all the meats, this is the place for you. Like Joey says, "Here come the meat sweats." No matter what you order, the portions are generous, but not outrageous and everything seems to be at a price point that is very fair. Most of the times I end up at Fat Dan's it's to enjoy a craft beer and catch up with my friends. It's a great atmosphere to hang out, not matter what the weather is like outside. I feel like I'm drinking inside someone's tricked out garage, which really suits my casual style. Concret floor, cinder block wall, and TVs everywhere for watching the sports. It gets pretty loud when the place is full, but that's no different than any other sports bar like this. They offer up a sizable selection of local craft beers, but also have $4 Old Styles if that's what the day warrants. There now four Fat Dan's locations throughout Indy and Bloomington. Easily the best chicken wings in the Indy area. They don't even need sauce which is saying a lot for a girl who loves her condiments. The atmosphere is super laid back and the bartenders are super helpful when it comes to beer selections and questions about the menu. They had ribs when we went last night which they'd never had before. AMAZING. Super tender. Again, no sauce needed. Other menu items to try out: French fries with a side of beer cheese, Chicago dog, mini corn dogs. The only minor complaint I have is the bathrooms. Since it's an old building they haven't been updated and they're not super clean. Nothing that I can't get past though. Most bar restrooms aren't that great. read more

I've been here on several occasions, and the thing that really stands out to me is how the staff all works together. We visited mid afternoon on a Sunday. We stood at the door as all of the tables appeared full. A server noticed us and waved us over to a table that was hidden in the back. We were quickly greeted. I had the smoked wings with Fat Dan's sauce and they were so good! Wings everywhere have been hit or miss lately because of supply chain issues, but these were as good as I remember. My companions had a Chicago dog and a BBQ pork sandwich. My only regret is that I had to pass on the Italian beef this time, because it is the best in the city. I've been on a quest and, hands down, can say that Fat Dan's has the best hot dogs in town. I favor the Chicago dog, covered in pickles, onions, relish, tomatoes, peppers, and mustard. It's a messy delight. Pro tip: Once you pick it up, don't sit it down. Just go for it. I love it so much that I can't bring myself to try anything else on the menu. My review may be a little biased on the high side because whenever I gather with friends to share a meal, I tend to have a more enjoyable experience. Although there is a small parking area reserved for customers behind the restaurant, it does fill up quickly and it is easy to miss if you are in a hurry driving along College. The alley behind the lot can sometimes be blocked by vehicles parked in the way, so I suggest slowing down and keeping your eyes open for the driveway back to the lot. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating (including a patio on the back.) The indoor also has garage doors that open to let the fresh air in. It does get loud inside with the music cranked, lots of conversation and the noise of vehicles from College Ave. The six of us shared a table where we could see by the natural light coming in through the front. They have lots of choices for beverages, including many craft beers. Sadly, I ordered an iced tea that had no flavor...I thought it was just water. Almost that clear. Our table ordered a variety of sandwiches and sides. I wanted the Reuben but was a little hesitant when I saw it was house smoked. It was really tasty and I chose it because the Pastrami and Corned beef did not include sauerkraut which I wanted on my sandwich. I made the right choice and was very pleased with the taste. The fries that someone ordered were seasoned and I really enjoyed them. I've attempted to contact Fat Dan's discretely via the online form on the website as well the Mass Ave Facebook page through messenger; both attempts were timestamped @4:30p on 8/24 & 9/1 @5:30p. My FB messages were marked as read & nearly 1 month later I am sad to say that my feedback and comments were both disregarded. I reached out paraphrased as follows: "Hi there, I visited Fat Dan's in Broad Ripple Friday 8/2/19 & I wanted to share feedback from my visit. I've been looking forward to visit for a over one year now. Closing time was 11p & I called around 10:40 to place a carryout order but the person who answered the phone responded that phone orders stop at 10:30 but as long as I walk in the door by 11 my order can be taken. I arrived around 10:55p and the guy at the counter told me they are getting ready to close. I replied that I just got off the phone and was told that as long as I walked in by 11, my order would be taken; he asked me who it was that I talked to; I wasn't able to answer this as they didn't state their name when answering the phone. He returned to the counter, not too enthused, and began to take my order. $44 and 10 minutes later my order was ready. Tipping for carry-out orders has always been a very debatable topic but considering my "inconvenience" I gave an extra few bucks for my 10 minute visit. I said thank you, grabbed my bags & departed. All he said was "there you go." No smile, no "thank you," no "have a good one." After months of anticipation, I took a bite of a chicken wing as soon as I sat in my car. The flavor was just okay; it resembled more of a BBQ grilled over charcoal vs. smoker cooked. My Wells St. Burger had good beef texture, cooked to the proper temperature & tender however; someone had completely disregarded seasoning the beef. No flavor besides the toppings that came on the burger. The brisket was like eating leather: dry with unpleasant mouthfeel. I spat it out & threw out the rest. The pastrami/corned beef sandwich was just another bust: dry, small, bland & unseasoned. I don't know if it's because I came in right before close or if they had a bad day but my 1st visit to Fat Dan's was truly a huge disappointment, especially since I've been wanting to come here for years. I wouldn't have gone there before close if the guy on the phone had told me otherwise but he said as long as I walk in before close I would be taken care of. This is a great spot to grab a burger and have a beer, or watch a game if you are into that. It's the opposite of fancy, as you might guess from the name, but the food was all high quality. I went all out (had skipped lunch) and had the Dan's Fat Brother burger which was too big to fit in my mouth even after smashing it down. The fries and tots are top-notch. I highly suggest sharing an order of Dirty Tots, they stayed crispy even with the delicious cheese and hot sauce slathered atop. read more
