I'm gonna give this place five stars. The macaroni is actually good asf for a white restaurant I wasn't expecting that. I like macaroni so I always try to get it wherever some is offered on the menu and have to spice it up with s&p or hot sauce which is why I got hot sauce in the side (which I think the make themselves) but it's unnecessary. I've been coming here for almost a decade at this point. When other restaurants and bars fail, the Fat Dan's in Broad Ripple is 100 percent guaranteed to let me turn my brain off and just eat for once. The service is always friendly, the griddle is seasoned to Waffle House perfection, and the consistency is breathtaking. My suggestion for the best cheeseburger in the city is the Flat Daniel with sautéed onions and jalapeños. Crunchy, juicy, the cheese is properly melted, the bacon is crisp, and the patties are impeccably seasoned with salt and pepper. On top of that, I'm drinking an Oban 14 scotch and watching all the sports I've ever wanted. The entire crew here is experienced, friendly, and I've never seen a hint of panic or spite concerning customers or dinner rushes. I've cooked in some of the nicer restaurants in New Orleans (Commander's Palace and SoBou), waited tables at Bluebeard, and was even a pastry chef for a stint (4 a.m. ain't for me I discovered; also, macarons are overrated. Entremets are where it's at.). I can say with the utmost confidence that this is one of the only good places left to eat and relax left in this city. Keep in mind that this is the original Fat Dan's location. The downtown one is good, and the location in Carmel just doesn't exist in my opinion. Carmel ruins everything good. Yeah I know places aren't crowded; service should be prompt, we all know that's not always the case. I had the Fat Dan Fat Burger with cheddar instead of American cheese. The burger was grilled nicely and it was juicy. I enjoy a messy burger, this fit the bill. My friend ordered something custom, it was a double patty with 2 cheeses, bacon, ham..ridiculous. Don't get a double patty unless you're really hungry, they are thick! We also had the IPA Beer Cheese Fries. The serving size is massive, make sure you share with friends or make it your meal. The fries alone are delicious..adding cheese and bacon make them addictive. Why only 4 stars? I would've given a 4.5. The buns don't hold up to the weight of the burger. I had a single, the bun seemed to disintegrate. Maybe if it was toasted a bit more, it wouldn't have become so soggy. Overall, the food was tasty!! All of the staff here are wonderful, provide an amazing atmosphere, and I enjoy visiting here often. On 6/29/24 I visited this location off Mass Ave and a very disheveled man was behind the bar. You could tell he was already two sheets to the wind when I arrived. He was in dark cargo shorts/shirt and wore glasses. Not sure if he was a manager or shift lead. The staff were having quite a busy night and he seemed to add unnecessary gasoline to a fire. He poured himself shot after shot which weren't needed in my opinion, as he was already drunk. It appeared he made one of the staff come to tears. This guy was quite an asshole and needs fired in my opinion. How uncouth to treat staff in such a manner during business hours. It is family friendly as well. Even with being short staffed and a full house, the food came out quick and the waitress did a great job keeping everything perfect. We went with the dirty tots and I would highly recommend giving them a try. If you don't like spicy, you can always ask for the hot sauce on the side. I also got the smoked wings (10 count) with barbecue and teriyaki sauce. The wings are some of the best in city and one of the few places I'm aware that serves them this way. We also split an order of the fries which a small order can feed 2-3 people. I love how the food is served with it uniquely coming out on a giant piece of piece. After discovering it by accident at the suggestion of a friend who knew I liked to go to Twenty Tap, it's next door neighbor, I've eaten at Fat Dan's Deli about as many times as I've eaten any other place in Indianapolis. This is a Chicago dog/grilled/smoked meat restaurant, through and through. I'm not sure I'd advise coming here if you're a loud-and-proud Cardinals or Packers fan or if you want ketchup on your dog. The service has always been terrific, anytime I've ever gone. The beer selection, while a little limited in its number, is still impressive in its collection of unique, off-the-beaten track kind of stuff. You can usually still get Old Style, though. I've had several of the different dogs, and while the Italian Sausage will always be my favorite of those, you also have to contend with choosing from among masterpieces such as the Hot Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwich, the House Smoked Reuben, and numerous "Fat Burgers." Last time I went, I tried the N.Y. Fat burger for the first time - pastrami, smoked corned beef, lettuce/tomato, swiss cheese and spicy mustard. It was terrific. I had it with the IPA Beer Cheese Fries, and legend has it the potatoes are cut by hand to make the fries. They also have Dirty Tots, which are tater tots drowned in cheese with hot sauce on them. Both are outstanding. Fat Dan's also has a smoker, from which you can order pork, brisket, ribs, wings or meatloaf. I believe the ribs are available only on Saturdays and Sundays, so prepare ahead. These are other locations for Fat Dan's as well, which I might review at a later time. The one downtown is a lot like this one, just smaller, and it has some outdoor seating. Good beer selection as well. So unless you're under the strict care of a cardiologist, are a Vegan or just ate a full meal from somewhere else, I could not more strongly recommend heading over the College Avenue in South Broad Ripple-ish to sample Fat Dan's. Stopped by Fat Dan's Broadripple on a Thursday with a group of four to watch the NFL draft. Atmosphere is perfect for this kind of thing.
