Ambiance: loud! We were there on a Friday evening around 5:30 pm and the music got progressively louder as time went by. Be aware it is hard to hear your friends at the same table. Service: wait staff is very attentive and nice. Food: started out great with the loaded tots (temperature hot and the hot sauce is super spicy!) and then became disappointing. Sits right on College Avenue at 54th in SoBro, so also right at the Red Line stop. A few sidewalk based tables give a great view of SoBro traffic and the overhead garage doors lift up to give the whole inside & bar an outside while inside feel. Grabbed carry out from here because I was craving some comfort food and it was just what I needed! I ordered 10 wings with Teriyaki and BBQ sauce. The wings come "naked" and the sauce in individual containers. These are some of the best wings I've had. I also got the dirty tots and they were drool-worthy. A large portion that I ended up eating only half of but I decided to save the extras and heat them up the next day and they were still delicious! The hot sauce is hot so if you aren't into spicy I'd ask to remove that. I put a little ranch on top to take the edge off and it did the trick. The pulled pork, cheese, and tater tot ratio was perfect. Every bite had a mix of it all. The actual place looks super fun! Fat Dan's is an amazing place from the food and beer to the atmosphere. How can a location not be great when the menu has hugs listed for free...kisses do run a hefty $3 though. They usually have about 10-16 beers on tap including old style which is always a huge plus for me. The do food from a grill/smoker with emphasis on Chicago-style cuisine. It is family friendly as well. Even with being short staffed and a full house, the food came out quick and the waitress did a great job keeping everything perfect. We went with the dirty tots and I would highly recommend giving them a try. If you don't like spicy, you can always ask for the hot sauce on the side. I also got the smoked wings (10 count) with barbecue and teriyaki sauce. The wings are some of the best in city and one of the few places I'm aware that serves them this way. We also split an order of the fries which a small order can feed 2-3 people. I love how the food is served with it uniquely coming out on a giant piece of piece. After discovering it by accident at the suggestion of a friend who knew I liked to go to Twenty Tap, it's next door neighbor, I've eaten at Fat Dan's Deli about as many times as I've eaten any other place in Indianapolis. This is a Chicago dog/grilled/smoked meat restaurant, through and through. I'm not sure I'd advise coming here if you're a loud-and-proud Cardinals or Packers fan or if you want ketchup on your dog. The service has always been terrific, anytime I've ever gone. The beer selection, while a little limited in its number, is still impressive in its collection of unique, off-the-beaten track kind of stuff. You can usually still get Old Style, though. I've had several of the different dogs, and while the Italian Sausage will always be my favorite of those, you also have to contend with choosing from among masterpieces such as the Hot Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwich, the House Smoked Reuben, and numerous "Fat Burgers." Last time I went, I tried the N.Y. Fat burger for the first time - pastrami, smoked corned beef, lettuce/tomato, swiss cheese and spicy mustard. It was terrific. I had it with the IPA Beer Cheese Fries, and legend has it the potatoes are cut by hand to make the fries. They also have Dirty Tots, which are tater tots drowned in cheese with hot sauce on them. Both are outstanding. Fat Dan's also has a smoker, from which you can order pork, brisket, ribs, wings or meatloaf. I believe the ribs are available only on Saturdays and Sundays, so prepare ahead. These are other locations for Fat Dan's as well, which I might review at a later time. The one downtown is a lot like this one, just smaller, and it has some outdoor seating. Good beer selection as well. So unless you're under the strict care of a cardiologist, are a Vegan or just ate a full meal from somewhere else, I could not more strongly recommend heading over the College Avenue in South Broad Ripple-ish to sample Fat Dan's. Visiting Indy from out of town, I ordered take out from here based on the recommendation of a friend. Wow was I disappointed. Now the Chicago style hot dog was good (albeit soaking wet" bun so so speak). The good news stops there. The full size wings looked good, however they were soaking in grease, and disgusting. There must have been a Tablespoon if liquid grease in the bottom of the cardboard basket , and i bet a few more tablespoons saturating the wings. The large order of french fries were just as grease soaked. Much grease in the bottom of its container, and the fries were fully soaked in grease. Totally disgusting, The paper bag was itself soaked and saturated in grease when I arrived back at my friend's house And I mean soaked! Nothing in the bag to absorb any grease; no napkins, paper towels, etc The chicken sandwich was reported as "ok". A few sheets of waked paper, dispelling grease to anything that would absorb it. Each individual item was wrapped in foul sheets, which were saturated with grease taking them out if the bag. I am afraid to look at the car seat tomorrow morning. Simple and casual spot for food and sports. It's not ideal for huge groups since they have smaller tables but we've been able to make it work when it's not too busy. The menu has a lot of fried and greasy food, it comes out quick, and served on parchment paper for easy cleanup. Our group loves the smoked wings, corn dogs, and Chicago dog. Fat dan's normally has a good selection of craft beer on draft, but always have the same selection in bottles/cans. It's a relatively spacious place since their remodel. Even has outdoor seating. WOW is the only word that comes to mind when I think of Fat Dan's. This has been one of my favorite Indy spots for awhile because it's affordable and the quality of food is astounding. Luckily I live only a few blocks away from the location on College. Parking can be difficult if you don't know about the parking lot off of 54th street, but it's always worth it. This is some of the best barbecue I have ever tried and when someone even mentions "Fat Dan's" I automatically get a craving for pulled pork or some of their delicious wings (which I usually always get). The barbecue sauces are another highlight - but don't ask for ranch! Fat Dan's also offers a great selection of beers and ciders that pair well with all of their barbecue. The drinks are priced very reasonably at about $6, making the destination perfect for a night out getting beers and food with friends or a significant other. Additionally, the restaurant has great staff and takes COVID measures seriously. Unfortunately bar seating is not the same anywhere right now, but this restaurant has found a way to still give the bar-seating feel while keeping customers safe and at a comfortable distance.
