They sell plants and flowers, but I didn't pay attention to that aspect of their operations. Cold Spring sells some of their own produce, products from other CT Farms and/or Orchards, Cold Spring branded products such as salsa, and other area products such as bread from a local bakery. I bought green cabbage, peaches, celery and salsa. Everything seemed appropriate quality for seasonal CT produce. The produce I didn't buy also looked good and represented what's in season pretty well. I will definitely go back for in season produce since I live in the area. This is an observation as opposed to a criticism. The reason I'm giving Cold Brook 4 Stars rather than 5 Stars relates to the extent of their offerings compared to another Farm Stand I frequently visit that's a bit farther away. That Farm Stand has a wide range of partnerships with high end CT businesses and they have things like high quality bagels, cheeses, pies, cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches, etc. That Farm Stand also has a wider range of canned goods, meats, and dairy products etc. I would travel farther to a Farm Stand like that because there are more products that interest me. Cold Spring will be the place I go for convenience when I want in season produce for a few days.

As they price individually and in sets, you may end up bringing home more plants than planned, but this is a good spot to get it all started. We now have a glorious set of tomatoes in progress, and now a couple extra tomato planters. The double decker wagons all over also help you take home more. The little farm store, extra colorful with its murals, has honey, maple syrup, salsa, and maybe more on down the season. It's neat to see start and end of season at the checkout, and the staff was kind. Thankfully there is extra parking is on both sides of the farm store, in case you're driving East, just look out for wagon traffic on your way through each greenhouse.

Most important is that the world of Eastern European delicatessens tends, in New Britain, to be very forgiving with regard to food and/or produce which looks old, tired, or just not fresh. We found this to be the same in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn (New York) when we lived nearby years and years ago. Zieleniak defies this tradition and we're glad they do. We're not Polish, but really appreciate the cuisines of Poland, Hungary, and Germany (my family's heritage). Start by getting good pickles and sauerkraut (you can get cabbage-only, or Polish kapusta, with carrots). These items once were offered in barrels -- the health department probably intervened, because one now needs to reach in to a refrigerator to retrieve these lovely, briny/vinegary items. I can't get enough kapusta. Not only do I put it on hot dogs (Martin Rosol natural-casing, or Hebrew National), but I put it on ham sandwiches, on old roast beef, and also plain cheese sandwiches. A variety of good-quality fruits and vegetables is offered up front. We like the apples, and the choice of root veggies (celeriac, carrots, parsnips, rutabagas, turnips, and more). Cruciferous vegetables are also in abundance. A recent order of Brussels Sprouts was remarkably fresh and vibrant. The delicatessen, however, is the heart of this market. There are several cheerless women of various ages who work behind the counter. God bless them, because between them, they manage to understand my poor pronunciation of the Polish-language price markers for the various cured hams, salami, and specialty charcuterie. They have several different types of aspic-based cold-cuts ("Head Cheese" to the uninitiated). The light-colored one, with carrot shreds and some fresh herbs, is the one we prefer -- but they're all good, and sliced expertly, so it doesn't fall apart when one gets home. You'll notice that whether aspic-based, ham, liverwurst, mortadella or salami, everything's well-conserved, sliced perfectly, and a *magnificent* value. The head cheese is $6.99 per pound (we've paid $16 a pound in NY City at Schaller & Weber). The garlicky salami is only $5.99 a pound -- we'd pay twice as much for such rich, garlicky flavor and a splendid balance of fat to meat. Pepper ham, garlic ham, fatty ham, and lean ham are no more than $6.99 but are probably $4.99 -- and all are just wonderful. Get the cole slaw here if you're a cole slaw lover. Some call this slaw, with carrots, red cabbage and parsley in it, "calico slaw." Whatever you call it, it's wonderful. And they make cucumber salad with dill, onion and sour cream that will dissuade you, as it did us, from making your own. Who wants to peel, salt, drain, and slice cucumbers? Let them do it for you. They make this salad with rich, high-butterfat Polish-style sour cream. This sour cream is available for sale here (it's made in Illinois, but labeled nearly entirely in Polish, however). Round out the trip by buying tea (great herbal tea variety available, here), marmalade and jelly, soup and gravy mixes, and exotic canned vegetables and fruits (we say 'canned,' but it's all in jars so you can see what you're getting). Bread can be bought here, but you can also go down the street to one of the two decent bakeries. The bread, cake and cookie offerings are unremarkable. Did I mention that this place is an excellent value? Go here for an adventure -- but bring your patience, you may wait on line a little while (we avoid this by going at about 2:30 on a weekday).

I definitely would buy my seafood there. There were produce with a variety of different fruits and veggies that you can't find in your typical grocery store; I purchased some rambutan on this visit. There were seasonings, a small selection of noodles, and other products. It's not just Asian items but Latin, Caribbean, African, and more. There were dairy products and a bunch of snacks too. Service was good and it wasn't too crowded in there. Overall, a good spot to get some ethnic food items.

During my visit, the trees were full of Pink Lady, Evercrisp, Red Delicious, and Empire apples. After tasting these fresh, juicy picks straight from the tree, I don't think I can go back to store-bought apples - not that I really have a choice! Every bite was crisp perfection, and honestly, this might become an annual tradition for me. You can choose from a few bag sizes when you go apple-picking: Large ($40) - labeled at 30 lbs Medium ($25) - labeled at 12-15 lbs Small ($15) - labeled at 7-8 lbs Separate from the orchard, there's a large open field that's perfect for picnics, with plenty of seating and cozy fire pits to keep you warm. It's a beautiful, family-friendly space -- kids running around, birthday celebrations happening, and couples just relaxing in the fall breeze. You don't need to pick apples or pay any additional fees to enjoy this area, which is a big plus. Bring your own chairs if you want extra comfort. There were three food trucks on-site during my visit. My favorite was Pika Food Truck -- their Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich was delicious. Chef O's Streatery offered empanadas but they weren't my favourite-- a bit too salty and lacking flavor. We also tried a flight of ciders, which was such a fun way to sample different seasonal flavors. Before you leave, make sure to check out the scenic overlook -- it's stunning, especially with the fall foliage. I loved that they even had a tripod set up for easy photo-taking. Rogers Orchards truly captures everything great about fall -- fresh apples, good food, cozy vibes, and community. They accept cards, which makes checkout super easy.

I did a bit of searching on my phone to find one that was close to the path I was traveling, I-91. It was also hard since it was a Friday technically "in winter" which is not the best time to get lucky finding a random farmers market. I was super excited and impressed when I pulled up to Garden Farmers Market. Not only do they grow a lot of their products on site in green houses, it was all organic! They have a wide selection of fresh greens they grow on the property. There is also a small dairy, juice and meat section, as well as some packaged products and spices. They had almost everything I was looking for. Unfortunately like most small markets they tend to carry mostly in season produce. It is a great place to find fresh organic produce, would be wonderful for someone who juices or anyone who wants organic food. Since it is hard to buy all organic, I would definitely return to buy the certain fruits and vegetables I choose to buy organic. Best of all I got a jar of raw honey for $5.99and the staff was very nice and inviting to the customers! A few cons: The prices are high (but you have to keep in mind its fresh organic produce) They don't have a scale by the produce so you can gauge what you are spending They are only open fri & sat
