I recently moved nearby and was curious about this Farm's offerings. My review exclusively focusses…read moreon the food-related Farm-stand part of the business. They sell plants and flowers, but I didn't pay attention to that aspect of their operations. Cold Spring sells some of their own produce, products from other CT Farms and/or Orchards, Cold Spring branded products such as salsa, and other area products such as bread from a local bakery. I bought green cabbage, peaches, celery and salsa. Everything seemed appropriate quality for seasonal CT produce. The produce I didn't buy also looked good and represented what's in season pretty well. I will definitely go back for in season produce since I live in the area. This is an observation as opposed to a criticism. The reason I'm giving Cold Brook 4 Stars rather than 5 Stars relates to the extent of their offerings compared to another Farm Stand I frequently visit that's a bit farther away. That Farm Stand has a wide range of partnerships with high end CT businesses and they have things like high quality bagels, cheeses, pies, cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches, etc. That Farm Stand also has a wider range of canned goods, meats, and dairy products etc. I would travel farther to a Farm Stand like that because there are more products that interest me. Cold Spring will be the place I go for convenience when I want in season produce for a few days.

3 glorious seasons of the year you can find starter flats and baskets here at Cold Spring Broom…read more Annuals, perennials, and garden starters are all here! As they price individually and in sets, you may end up bringing home more plants than planned, but this is a good spot to get it all started. We now have a glorious set of tomatoes in progress, and now a couple extra tomato planters. The double decker wagons all over also help you take home more. The little farm store, extra colorful with its murals, has honey, maple syrup, salsa, and maybe more on down the season. It's neat to see start and end of season at the checkout, and the staff was kind. Thankfully there is extra parking is on both sides of the farm store, in case you're driving East, just look out for wagon traffic on your way through each greenhouse.

There are a half-dozen stores on Broad Street in New Britain which do the same thing Zieleniak…read moredoes. We just like the *way* they do it, and the way the place is laid out. Most important is that the world of Eastern European delicatessens tends, in New Britain, to be very forgiving with regard to food and/or produce which looks old, tired, or just not fresh. We found this to be the same in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn (New York) when we lived nearby years and years ago. Zieleniak defies this tradition and we're glad they do. We're not Polish, but really appreciate the cuisines of Poland, Hungary, and Germany (my family's heritage). Start by getting good pickles and sauerkraut (you can get cabbage-only, or Polish kapusta, with carrots). These items once were offered in barrels -- the health department probably intervened, because one now needs to reach in to a refrigerator to retrieve these lovely, briny/vinegary items. I can't get enough kapusta. Not only do I put it on hot dogs (Martin Rosol natural-casing, or Hebrew National), but I put it on ham sandwiches, on old roast beef, and also plain cheese sandwiches. A variety of good-quality fruits and vegetables is offered up front. We like the apples, and the choice of root veggies (celeriac, carrots, parsnips, rutabagas, turnips, and more). Cruciferous vegetables are also in abundance. A recent order of Brussels Sprouts was remarkably fresh and vibrant. The delicatessen, however, is the heart of this market. There are several cheerless women of various ages who work behind the counter. God bless them, because between them, they manage to understand my poor pronunciation of the Polish-language price markers for the various cured hams, salami, and specialty charcuterie. They have several different types of aspic-based cold-cuts ("Head Cheese" to the uninitiated). The light-colored one, with carrot shreds and some fresh herbs, is the one we prefer -- but they're all good, and sliced expertly, so it doesn't fall apart when one gets home. You'll notice that whether aspic-based, ham, liverwurst, mortadella or salami, everything's well-conserved, sliced perfectly, and a *magnificent* value. The head cheese is $6.99 per pound (we've paid $16 a pound in NY City at Schaller & Weber). The garlicky salami is only $5.99 a pound -- we'd pay twice as much for such rich, garlicky flavor and a splendid balance of fat to meat. Pepper ham, garlic ham, fatty ham, and lean ham are no more than $6.99 but are probably $4.99 -- and all are just wonderful. Get the cole slaw here if you're a cole slaw lover. Some call this slaw, with carrots, red cabbage and parsley in it, "calico slaw." Whatever you call it, it's wonderful. And they make cucumber salad with dill, onion and sour cream that will dissuade you, as it did us, from making your own. Who wants to peel, salt, drain, and slice cucumbers? Let them do it for you. They make this salad with rich, high-butterfat Polish-style sour cream. This sour cream is available for sale here (it's made in Illinois, but labeled nearly entirely in Polish, however). Round out the trip by buying tea (great herbal tea variety available, here), marmalade and jelly, soup and gravy mixes, and exotic canned vegetables and fruits (we say 'canned,' but it's all in jars so you can see what you're getting). Bread can be bought here, but you can also go down the street to one of the two decent bakeries. The bread, cake and cookie offerings are unremarkable. Did I mention that this place is an excellent value? Go here for an adventure -- but bring your patience, you may wait on line a little while (we avoid this by going at about 2:30 on a weekday).

Small store but so many options. Lots of veggies. I loved their pineapple cabbage salad at deli…read morecounter.

I've…read morevisited a couple of times this season and I recommend coming almost as soon as they open in early September. When we visited later in the season to grab our pumpkin head pictures, the weather had pretty much knocked a bunch, if not most of the apples down off the trees. We went on opening day and got the most perfect Honeycrisp and jonamac apples! This was my first time having a jonamac and I loved the light sweetness of it. Honeycrisp are my favorite without question! The money apples! The larger apples seem to grow towards the top of the tree so being over 6 feet really helps here :) . I got the biggest bag size and it took a while before it was full, but it's definitely worth it in my opinion if you like to make baked treats or juices or cider. We also made sure to stop at the farm store and it was amazing to see everything laid out! There are so many things made in house here. They also have a cidery and it's full of merch too. We grabbed apple cider donuts and a half gallon of their regular cider. I would love to go back and grab the Honeycrisp cider when I get the chance!

I primarily visited Rogers to try their cider donuts, but I was drawn to the Apple Cider, Apples…read moreand Fritter Donut Bites as well. First of all, Rogers wasn't just an Orchard. It was a Hub of Activity. People met there on bikes. People were chatting outside. It was pretty impressive. I also loved the selection of apples. I'm not a pick your own guy, but I like being able to try a bunch of fresh apples. I was a fan of the Cider machine where you could get a fresh cup for a $1. I've had Rogers' Cider before, but not there. It was really good. Not too sweet. To the donuts. The cider donut was good -- obviously fresh. I actually preferred the Fritter Donut Nuggets. I liked the flavor better. I have a note though. Everybody loves that. LOL. I'm sure Rogers has been doing it this way forever, and there is a certain efficiency in doing it this way, but I don't love that the donuts are only available in pre-filled bags or containers. I have a family of 3. And I only wanted 3 donuts. One for each of us that day. But I had to buy a bag of a bunch of them. You can't buy them individually. I'll end up throwing away half those donuts. I don't love that. I also feel that pre-bagging the donuts in plastic de-values them. That's not a high end donut experience. It feels like buying a box of donuts at the grocery store. There. I said my bit. I like Roger's though. I probably won't buy a pre-filled bag of donuts again. I will buy cider, apples and fritter donut nuggets though.

I was driving up through Connecticut for a meeting when I stumbled upon this gem. I needed to pick…read moreup some fresh ingredients for dinner but wanted to find a farm stand or market rather than going to a grocery store. I did a bit of searching on my phone to find one that was close to the path I was traveling, I-91. It was also hard since it was a Friday technically "in winter" which is not the best time to get lucky finding a random farmers market. I was super excited and impressed when I pulled up to Garden Farmers Market. Not only do they grow a lot of their products on site in green houses, it was all organic! They have a wide selection of fresh greens they grow on the property. There is also a small dairy, juice and meat section, as well as some packaged products and spices. They had almost everything I was looking for. Unfortunately like most small markets they tend to carry mostly in season produce. It is a great place to find fresh organic produce, would be wonderful for someone who juices or anyone who wants organic food. Since it is hard to buy all organic, I would definitely return to buy the certain fruits and vegetables I choose to buy organic. Best of all I got a jar of raw honey for $5.99and the staff was very nice and inviting to the customers! A few cons: The prices are high (but you have to keep in mind its fresh organic produce) They don't have a scale by the produce so you can gauge what you are spending They are only open fri & sat
