"Apple, peaches, pumpkin pie Soon your love will be all mine" Somehow, when I walked into Appletree, that cool old song popped into my head. I did see apples, all kinds of exotic fruits, and a cheese pumpkin. I went there specifically to buy some lemongrass I needed for a chicken recipe, and I knew an Asian market would be my best bet. Sure enough, I found it here. I very much enjoyed strolling around the store and checking out all of the exotic things on the shelves, in the freezers, and in the showcases. I saw more kinds of Ramen than I ever knew existed, plus a can of quail eggs, a bag of rice as big as your pillow, bags of Scotch Bonnet peppers, fresh sugarcane, a refrigerator tray full of fish heads, and another one full of small octopuses or is it octopi? If sauces and spices are your thing, you'll walk out of here a very happy person. I even saw a 100-count pack of chopsticks. And if you like mushrooms or eggplant, be prepared because they have quite a few varieties of each. We had trouble finding the lemongrass, but a helpful worker found a few stalks for us in the back of the store. I was clueless about what some of the things I saw even were, and some of the things I was knowledgeable about seemed somewhat higher priced than usual. But there is no doubt that I was thoroughly entertained while shopping there and walked out with that elusive lemongrass, plus some Ramens and curry sauces.

Appletree has a great variety of fruits and vegetables, you'll even find some exotic ones too. Their prices are some of the best on fresh produce. Unfortunately the whole store has a very potent fish smell. It truly turns me off. This isn't the most well kept store around, there are plenty of areas that could use some remodeling and refreshment, they have buckets collecting water leaks pretty much every time I've gone in. Despite the unpleasant look and smell of the store, they offer fresh fish here, hence that smell, seasonings and spices, and some unique drinks. I'd recommend stopping here if you're looking for fresh fruits and vegetables, or exotic ones.

I was also able to find broccoli rabe, diakon radish, and Ngo gai (also known as culantro or mexican coriander).

But if you walk to the far left side of the market in search of the restrooms, you'll see a sign and a downward staircase that will bring you here. It carries food items from Spain, Italy, and the Mediterranean area. Lots of canned fish, pasta, oils, vinegars, crackers, sauces, olives , meats and cheese and the like. It reminded me a lot of the little grocery store inside the old Costa Del Sol restaurant. There were some freebie cheese and cracker samples, and a sweet and friendly young lady there to greet us. We were the only one in the store, and I sure hope the market adds The Grocer to their website and list of vendors to encourage more customers to visit. Surprising to us, was that the pricing was very reasonable!! We picked up a jar of fig jam for $6.49 and a big 25 ounce jar of Fra Diavlo sauce for $4.99. I am certain that every future trip we make to the Parkville Market will end with a walk down that staircase into the Grocer. Hope to see you there !

The Grocer is too small to provide a one stop shopping experience. Rather, you're more likely to go there when you're already at the Market and you need a few high end items for guests or niche home cooking. Example, if you're cooking a Spanish-themed meal and you want better sherry vinegar and Spanish olive oil than you can buy at your near home grocery, you can get that at the Parkville Market Grocer. That can be very convenient.
