Farm Bell Kitchen was worth the 1 hour wait on a rainy day! Our group of 3 crowded by the bakery and coffee counter before being seated in their grand dining room which just radiates Southern charm. I ordered the Southern Benedict, which was a hash dish topped with fried grit cake, a poached egg, and delicious charred pork belly. The dishes flavors came brought out the best in the ingredients. Part of me wants to go 3 stars here but it wouldn't be fair. I really liked my meal. Ordered the south by southwest with a side of veggie sausage. It was very good. I didn't love the soft tortillas-thought huevos rancheros usually come with harder tortillas-but otherwise it was very good. I also ordered a peach Bellini. This was not good. I don't know how they make these but it had pulp floating it in. In fact, I was sure they brought me the wrong drink since it was the wrong color and full of pulp but I was assured it was correct. Don't order this. Pulp does not go in a Bellini. Finally, we split a waffle at the end. This was good but it reminded me a lot of a Waffle House waffle. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it struck me as odd. So why do I feel like I'm being too generous? For one thing, the Bellini, but for another, we made a reservation and instead of being inside their cute restaurant or out on their cute back patio, we were put on the street patio where there's high traffic and one other table. Service was horribly slow out there. We did ask if we could move and we were told they were fully booked. Okay, maybe that was true, but they had small, open tables inside and out on the back patio and our reservation was first, so why couldn't we be moved there? We came up to C-ville for a total of three days and my cousins literally came here every single day lol. The food was definitely delicious and the service was great too. Our server was super nice and attentive and had a great personality. She really took care of our group and was very personable to everyone at the table. The mask policy was pretty relaxed (which made the experience that much better!) and very few waiters appeared to be wearing them. Some people may feel differently about that, but it's nice to be able to go into a restaurant and start to have some feeling of normalcy again. My cousins couldn't stop raving about the Crab and banana beignets. As a beignet fan, I definitely came to try to them out, but I must say, please name the Crab Beignets something else! They are not beignets, they are more like hush puppies. Naming the crab puppies "beignets" is really misleading for those of us that have a totally different idea in mind of a beignet. The banana beignets were more in line with what a "beignet" actually tastes like, but I'm not really a fan of banana-flavored things, so my opinion may not be the best. We tried the Signature Bloody Mary, Mimosa Flute, Crab Beignets, Bananas Foster French Toast with Bacon, Farm Bell Benedict, and Side Order of Two Scratch-Made Biscuits.   We didn't enjoy the mimosas. The drink didn't taste good and was not bubbly enough. It was watery and wasn't sweet.   The Crab Beignets were awesome. They tasted like fried doughy crab balls of goodness. The dish felt unique and innovative to me. At least because I had never had crab beignets before. I would recommend ordering this dish if you find yourself here.   The Bananas Foster French Toast tasted good, but I wouldn't say that it was amazing. I was disappointed with the side order of bacon and the presentation. The dish was on the sweeter side which I liked. However, the presentation of the dish, and the small and few broken bananas on top was odd to me considering the high price of the order. In addition, it felt criminal that I was charged an additional 4 dollars for two pieces of burnt bacon. Definitely skip the bacon if you choose to order it.   The Farm Bell Benedict was good. I liked the thick slabs of ham. The eggs were poached well and were nice and runny when cutting into them. It was a standard take on a classic brunch dish.   We also decided to try their biscuits because they seemed to take pride in them. I appreciate that they were homemade from scratch, but I felt that they were nonetheless dry. There are a lot of good biscuit spots in Charlottesville, and this place does not make my list, especially considering the high price.   Overall, the Crab Beignets were great. A big NO! We were seated in a table that was uncomfortable so we moved over one. The waitress rudely informed us that that table was reserved and offered no alternative tables. She was not nice about it, at all. The restaurant was lightly busy and no one else ever came to the reserved table. (Or any tables except one.) The coffee was worse than K Cup Folgers. My wife's breakfast salad was wilted and had rotten pieces of lettuce. My bacon was severely burned and the eggs were cold and runny. Portions were small, if you even could choke down this slop. There were 3 of us in 2 cars and we really wanted to eat at Farm Bell Kitchen because the menu was interesting and reviews were great. However, there is no place to park, and I do mean NO PLACE. Parking is prohibited in the front, there is no parking in back and the streets were parked full. It's in a busy section of town, near the hospital and the university and full of people and cars. There are no parking garages and no parking lots that didn't require permits. Don't go unless you can walk there. This was on a Wednesday, Heaven knows what weekends are like. The ambience is very nice, and the server was attentive. Parking was difficult, and the food was disappointing. We had 3 diners, and no one liked their food enough to finish or take the leftovers home. The fried green tomatoes had a large piece of mozzarella cheese on top, which was melted at one point but quickly firmed up. This presentation took all the breading off and really showed that the tomatoes were not seasoned in any way. There was a dab of romesco sauce under the tomatoes, which provided some flavor; however, the wet consistency further broke down the coating on the fried green tomatoes. We also had a sticky bun. It had been heated, but by the time it reached the table, it was hard as a rock. The sticky sauce had been overcooked and had reached the caramelized stage. The Monte Cristo was not what you normally get. It was really 2 slices of brioche, which had been battered with a large wedge of unmelted Brie and a thin slice of country ham wedged in. There were strawberries sliced on top, which were not listed on the menu. The diner who ordered the Monte Cristo has a severe strawberry allergy, so the bread that came in contact with the strawberries had to be discarded. The poached egg in the Benedict dish was cooked too hard rather than runny as expected. Unfortunately, all of the other items we ordered had their issues. We were surprised to see that there was a 3% charge added to our bill for using a credit card. This was not on their menu. Had we known, we would have paid in cash. Short review- This place is excellent! Long review: This is a cute little restaurant(that has plenty of seating on the main floor, upstairs is added in the winter, and a tent is added outside for the summer). Ask the owner about the history of the restaurant(it has ties to Thomas Jefferson). It is a great idea to call ahead, or use the online version, to place a reservation on the weekends(F-Sun) and other busy days. They are open 8-2pm, with last seating at 1:30pm, kitchen closes shortly after. The bartender on the weekend is really awesome at his job! Try his Espresso Martinis! The wait staff if fun and friendly. If you joke with them, they will joke back with you, which is something that I love about restaurants! The food is phenomenal. I have eaten about half of the menu at this point, and everything has been a home run. There is a bonus weekday menu, that occasionally changes, that has some pretty sweet options on it. I love to add the brisket to pretty much anything that I can. Try a little of the hot sauce. It is made in house, and it packs a punch! Texas Pete gives me some flavor on my food, but a light fork tip of the house sauce burns. It has great flavor as well. They also had a live music event after hours in November, and it was great. It sounds like they are planning to do it again in the late winter, early spring. This is a dog, kid, and generally friendly restaurant that I always tell my friends to visit. 11 out of 10 stars in my book! read more

Bottom Line: Quaint atmosphere, great food and good service. My husband and I went to Farm Bell on a Sunday morning since it wasn't too far from our hotel. We arrived before 8am and felt lucky to get a table without a reservation so I definitely recommend a reservation. We sat out on the patio which was a little chilly but our server kept us warm with coffee. My husband got his usual pedestrian breakfast of eggs and bacon. Although tempted by their benedicts I decided to try a dish new to me - an avocado egg bake. It was a feast for my eyes and belly! The avocado egg bake consisted of a perfect avocado split in half with an egg in each recess of the avocado left by the pit. Toast points and hash browns were served on the side. For a little more protein I added sausage. Perhaps some people don't want to eat a whole avocado but after living in southern California for 12 years it seems normal to me! Everything was delicious. We enjoyed our breakfast so much that we also got too scones to go and enjoyed them later in the day. Farm Bell sources their ingredients from local farms and small businesses which adds to the charm of the experience. If I'm back in Charlottesville I would certainly dine at Farm Bell Kitchen again. read more

When I booked my tickets for apple picking at Carter Mountain, I looked for a place to make reservations for breakfast also and ended up here. I don't think we'll be back. Our reservation was at 10:15 on a Saturday morning and of course the morning of, it was raining. And so I called the restaurant at 8:15am and it rang with no answer. So I called back in 3 minutes and got an answer from a very rushed and rude man on the phone. I said we'd reserved a table for outside but because of the rain, I'd like to know if we'd be inside. He said no, but outside was in a tent and there was a heater. Upon arrival and check in, there were 6 employees up front and a man on crutches checking us in. He was polite and nice and sent us off with the host. As we entered the tent, it was cold and there was actually no heater anywhere. Wish I was told that on the phone instead of being told there was a heater because I left my bulky jacket in the car, assuming I'd be under a heat lamp. Nope, no heat lamp. Just cold and wet with wrought iron patio chairs that made everything even more freezing. Our server was super chipper. Blonde girl, braids, probably college as most of the employees there were. She was very sweet and our order was accurate. Our order- breakfast tacos for me. kind bland. cold tortilla, and even colder side potatoes. pico de gallo was pico de tomato. who made this? Not a Mexican, that's for sure. What is this teaspoon of green sauce? Is it avocado salsa? Green salsa? No- there are no tomatillos so it isn't green. But it's not guacamole because it's fluid. I dunno. Bland all around. Husband ordered Benedict. The ham was lovely but also cold. Everything we ordered was just cold. Not even room temp. And because we were pressed for time, we weren't going to send anything back for reheating. Should've just come to the table warm like it's supposed to be but I digress... his meal was just ok also. My daughter had a stack of 3 pancakes with Nutella and they were kinda cheap with the Nutella. They didn't bring syrup to the table, and my son also had ordered a kids meal pancake. I ended up pouring the syrup leftover in the banana beignet bowl onto my kids pancakes. I also thought it was funny that we got our food and we had no silverware, so the runner looks at me and asks "did you guys need silverware?" Jesus, I hope my kids are smart enough to see someone needing silverware and say "let me bring you some silverware! Sorry about that!" But alas, we were asked if we needed some and I so badly wanted to be a dick and tell him no, we planned to eat with our faces on the plate like animals. I was kind and just said "yes please". My husband asked for directions to the restroom and got the most convoluted and strange directions taking him all the way around the building when he could've just walked straight there. Very bizarre directions. I was freezing the entire meal. And I wasn't going to be that person to ask for a heater even though I was told 3 hours earlier that there would be one. It seemed like this place is ran by college kids that are unorganized. I've had better breakfasts for the same price, while being able to dine in comfortable temperatures, and get warm food, and also have silverware and be told where the bathroom is clearly without confusion. Overall, it was well made, but I felt it lacked flavor. The caperberries were delicious, but the fried green tomatoes themselves with mozz felt like they could've been seasoned a little better. I had the low country hash for my brunch entree. It's home fries with shrimp and lump crab. The shrimp was a touch overdone and the crab was good. I once again felt like the quality of the meal was pretty high, but it lacked some flavor. We ordered extra biscuits because those were AMAZING. I may have just picked the wrong entree. Overall, the portions were a bit smaller than I expected, and the price was a bit higher than I thought was worth it. A really nice bakery and restaurant located near the University of Virginia School of Medicine and Hospital. The breakfast dishes were spot on as well as the service. We were there last Saturday and they offer outdoor dining under a tent in the rear yard of the building. The next time we are in town we will definitely try the Sunday Brunch. Just be aware the place is right across the street from UVA so parking can be a challenge. I got the traditional breakfast 2 eggs hash browns paid an extra $5 to upgrade to pancakes and an extra $5 to upgrade my bacon to brisket. Extra $5 charge is diabolical the brisket was over cooked basically gave me slices of dog treats and gave me 4 pieces at that. Everything is very mediocre id rather go to first watch I expected better due to higher reviews and the upcharge on everything. We also got the avocado toast and it was just sad. They took a slice of untoasted bread put some avocado and some food lion looking pico on it. The fruits that came with had weird black marks all over it. Probably won't ever come again tons of other brunch options in the area that provide much more value for lesser money. I would have brunch here again. It's in a cute old house and cozy. The tomato basil soup was as good as the one at La Madeleine. The apple salad was good but was soaked in dressing. I appreciate some healthy options on the menu but one thing I found conspicuously missing on the menu was the lack of typical brunch items like pastries, yogurt, or oatmeal. If your kid can eat, I'd recommend not ordering from the kids menu. For a $10 French toast sticks and bacon dish, you get one bacon strip and three French toast sticks. If you order a latte, you won't get latte art. Just foam from a machine. I saw another table that ordered the chicken and waffles. It was a mighty generous portion (three pieces of fried chicken on top). Another table for the bananas foster French toast. Also a very generous portion. Tables are nicely spaced apart. All three dishes were different than foods I had tried before but I wanted to keep an open mind! The Banana Beignets were made of golden crispy dough with bourbon and caramel sauce. They were cold when we got them and gave off a bitter taste. The fried green tomatoes came with house mozzarella, remoulade, and caperberries and again simply lacked flavor. Finally my main dish, the South by Southwest, was huevos rancheros with corn tortillas, sweet potatoes, black eyed peas, and avocado salsa. However again the dish lacked flavor and the portion size was tiny relative to high price. The restaurant is located on a bustling street with only street parking available. We came after some snow, so we got lucky to find some parking around the corner as the main street wasn't plowed.
